Blue Owl Restaurant and Bakery - Review - All - The Infatuation

"Sure, you’re supposed to be grateful and gracious during Thanksgiving, but sometimes the spirit of the holiday is also about flexing on your family and neighbors at the dinner table. The Levee High Caramel Pie from Blue Owl Bakery does just that—the pie uses 18(!) apples, is the size and shape of a bowling ball, and comes with caramel sauce and pecans to top it all off after it comes out of the oven. Each pie weighs 10 pounds and is sure to be a showstopper among every other Thanksgiving dessert. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

We were there during the strawberry festival, and it was extremely busy. We had to wait an hour to get a table. Look at the size of that biscuit!! The food portions were large and filling. The family style food and atmosphere is well above average. Although the desserts looked amazing, We didn't get a chance to try them because we were completely stuffed.

Google
Blue Owl has great, delicious, homemade food. The menu offers soups, salads, sandwiches, and desserts, as well as daily specials, like fried chicken, chicken and dumplings, steak and gravy, or meatloaf. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water. The spinach & artichoke quiche is cheesy and flavorful. The soups are creamy, thick and rich. The desserts are splendid. This restaurant has a rustic, tea room atmosphere. The hours here are limited, so check before you go. Handicapped accessible.

Google
This is a really cool place just south of St. Louis. It has been on our radar to come here for quite a while, just for the pies, but we actually stayed for lunch and took the pies to go. We had the Reuben and patty melt with fries and curly fries. I’m a fry snob, so I was a little disappointed they were frozen, given the $3.79 up charge of you wanted them vs chips. The meals were good otherwise. The levee high caramel apple pie is to die for.

Google
When in Kimmswick you must stop at the Blue Owl. It is actually worth the drive from STL even if just for a slice of pie. We really lucked out as we were there on a Wednesday which has Southern Fried Chicken as the daily special. It was excellent. We took half of it home as we wanted to have a piece of the Carmel pecan apple pie. Blue Owl atmosphere is a nice small town diner plus they have a great front porch if you wish to sit outside.

My partner got this cute cake for my birthday. The fact that it traveled all the way from Missouri to Florida was impressive. On top of that once we got the cake. We went on a 8hr field trip and the cake was intact. Tasted delicious. Thank you so much! Definitely recommend.

Google
Food was phenomenal from the sweet tea to the tropical salad. Yum, I've never had a salad like that and it sure was tasty! Will be back.

The attention to the guests were wonderful. The homemade desserts were delightful. Our waitress was so genuine and peaceful (Tonie or Torie?), her energy was alluring (the kind of attention and care that draws you to her)....

I always order my birthday cakes from there. Lemon cake is so delicious. And the owner Mrs. Mary I love her she was so kind to me and prayed over me. I will travel again and again to support this Christian restaurant and bakery.

Yelp
Last minute decision to take family to their main location for a meal as we have not all been together. Offered immediate seating on porch, but we decided to wait for an interior table. Lots of groups came during our wait. It's always been like that here. Very popular. We each got something totally different, & all were more than satisfied. Filling. Yummy. Staff was incredible from check-in till we left. Waitress was beyond gifted/talented. One of my family members noticed a unique wall honoring what appeared to be staff in the area where we waited, & suggested I read what was under each photo. I'm glad I had an opportunity to do so before we left. Very inspiring. Made me cry. Photos will be uploaded of tribute wall.

Yelp
The food was half cold. I like my potatoes well done but these were barely edible, burnt. The dirt cake is the cleanest dirt we've seen and a disappointment compared to the pictures. The apple dessert was lacking in flavor and I had to spit out several pieces including the seeds and other parts of the core.

Yelp
Visited the quaint town of Kimmswick for a 5K and had to stop by The Blue Owl! It's a bubbly restaurant with a rustic theme, well-suited to its location. Our server was warm, welcoming, attentive and knowledgeable. I ordered the world-famous Levee High Caramel Pecan Apple Pie to go with a Trio combo: a salad, half a quiche and a cup of soup. The soup of the day was a hearty stuffed pepper soup, a rich mix of ground meat, rice and peppers in a tasty broth. My favorite dish was the half slice of quiche lorraine; warm and filling, with a flaky crust. The apple pie is a unique dish - towering caramel crust encases firm, tart-sweet apple slices, giving you a host of flavors to play with. Would dine here again!

Yelp
Great place to eat and visit on an outside terrace. Food was very plentiful and what can you say about the apple pie! It's huge and so very fresh. Grabbed some extra to take home on the flight. Super friendly service and prices are reasonable. We'll be back!

Yelp
Service always courteous and helpful. Really comfy lunchtime setting. Food choices include great salads, soups, sandwiches and plates. Something for gf needs.Save room for dessert with phenomenal pies and cakes, maybe not gf! You feel special after a lunch here.

Yelp
Fun lunch spot in Kimmswick . We went on a weekday so it wasn't busy but I expect there is a huge wait on the weekends . Both of us had salads and they were generously in portions. They came with a side of muffins which were delicious . We didn't get to try the award winning pies because we were so full but will definitely be back for them .

Yelp
I've spent my life hearing about it. I spent 1 hour living the dream. It was a pie in the sky dream due to constantly long wait times but today it happened. In all honesty, it worked out great coinciding this with the Christmas Kimmswick festival so the wait time meant shopping and perfect timing. So here's the scoop. 1. Chicken chili - cozy, scrumptious and worth the hype. I'd eat this 3 times a week if I could. It's a must. 2. The beef stew - eh... 3. The quiche Lorraine - standard, good execution, good for breakfast, not for recommendations 4. The chicken salad pie - insane. Couldn't stop eating it. A must try. Like the chicken pie covered with cheese, I too was smothered with deliciousness and had to stop to come up for error. And for the finale, the pies. 1. The coconut cream pie: delicious, yes, award winning no. Overshadowed by the famous levee pie 2. The mile high levee apple pie: it's on Oprah's favorite things... rightfully so. The caramel on the crust, lawwwd have mercy. Necessary hack - get it with vanilla ice cream. It needs some cream to cut the apple cinnamon's delicious 19 layers. All in all, great spot. For how famous and constantly busy it sounds it is I'm surprised the inside still looks like grandmas backyard home cookin small town dinner spot with 0 upgrades other than additional seating on a quasi patio but perhaps that's part of the charm. Worth the drive, worth the wait. Would enjoy again.

Yelp
First visit to the blue owl and it was great. My husband and I split orders, to start the white chicken chili and the beef vegetable. Both were great, but the chili really stood out as unique. The quiche was pretty standard, but the unexpected champion of the meal was the baked chicken salad. Who knew you could make a savory pie with chicken salad? The place is famous for the levee apple pie, and I can see why now! The mix of crust, caramel, cinnamon, and apple sang together. Pro tip- order a scoop of vanilla ice cream, it really set off the flavor profiles. There was a long wait, as expected, but they text you when your table is ready. This allowed us to explore the shops nearby and purchase some great Xmas gifts.
google avatar

Yelp
Family-owned and it shows in the quality and pride of every dish served. This is down home comfort food at its finest. Everything I'd heard about the white chicken chili was absolutely true...it was heavenly. And don't even get me started on the famous apple pie. One slice took care of four of us! Luckily it was a lovely day so we walked off the calories while doing a little shopping around town. Get there early! The place fills up quickly. Highly recommend because it's as comfortable as being at grandma's house.

Yelp
Expect a wait on a beautiful day! But there are plenty of nice places to sit and relax while you do! Plenty of delicious menu choices. Breakfast is served until 11:39 and starts at 10, so there's a short window for that in my opinion. Fun place to eat!

Yelp
Parking was a little crazy on a Saturday but we were able to find a spot in the nice large lot across the street. It was a warmer day but we sat outside. They have a great deck/patio with fans. Our server was prompt and attentive. The menu had plenty of great options but wanted to save room for dessert so went with the egg salad sandwich. It was tasty! It was served with a side of chips and they easily swapped soup for cottage cheese. The dessert menu was equally hard to choose from with so many tasty options. I went with the apple crumb pie. It came out warmed slightly which was perfect. Only regret- not getting a scoop of ice cream. The carrot cake was great too. Would definitely return! Glad we finally went for a drive to give it a try. You should too!

Yelp
Five stars! Obviously. The Blue Owl is a classic for a reason and for good reason. It is delicious for one, but the service and charm of not only the restaurant but the town in general cannot be beat. The desserts are incredible. My favorite is the turtle pecan pie or pecan pie cheesecake l, but I've never had any desert item there that I didn't love. The food is good too. On my most recent visit I tired the baked chicken salad pie. It was good! But to be honest, I would recommend the Quiche Lorraine, Spinach and Artichoke Quiche or any of the Homemade Soups over it. They are all delicious! I have also tried the Cobb salad and it is great. The Terrific Trio is also always a good choice. The restaurant is beautifully decorate for every season. Don't forget to check out the shops around the restaurant before or after stopping in to eat. You can make a whole day out of going to the Blue Owl. Just be ready to wait awhile for a table depending on when you try to go.
google avatar

Alyssa W.

Yelp
So, you want to try one of Oprah's favorite things? Try this Levee High Apple Pie from the Blue Owl. It's incredible. It has about 20 apples inside this pie. It is a show stopper for all holiday parties! The staff are wonderful! You can call ahead and they will hold a pie for you to pick up! It will be boxed up and ready to go. The restaurant has a private lot right across the street. If this apple pie isn't for you, you can grab another dessert or stay and eat a Midwest inspired dish like fried chicken.

Yelp
My first memories of eating out are at the Blue Owl. I've been coming here since the early 90's as a little one with my mom, her friends and their daughters. The Blue Owl holds such a special place in my heart and is such a beautiful fixture in the Jefferson County Community. The building has such a rich history as well as the town of Kimmswick. You truly feel at home when you're at the Blue Owl. I never miss an opportunity to order breakfast or the Quiche of the day with their famous Cheddar Soup. You absolutely cannot miss out on their dessert. If you're full, visit the dessert counter on your way out and take something home. You'll thank yourself in a couple hours. Might I suggest the turtle cheesecake, carrot cake or my favorite even though I'm 34 years old...Dirt Cake. The staff here is always so kind and hard working. The Blue Owl will always have my heart.

Yelp
Such a cute place! I had never been before, the area surrounding the restaurant was full of history, I couldn't believe we hadn't been there before! The food was definitely homestyle, very comforting. Like a locally owned Cracker Barrel which is a great compliment. The Levee high apple pie was good, the crust was the best part. The waitresses were wearing colonial dresses and everyone we encountered was super friendly. We will absolutely be back!
google avatar

Brianna L.

Yelp
Came for a birthday lunch and it was good home cooking. Food favorite was the fish sandwich for me! Desserts amazing as always. Service a little slow and reservation table not ready when we got here but still a nice lunch spot

JoAnn H.

Yelp
We have been to The Blue Owl by boat a few years back and we just had to come back! The employees are so sweet and helpful! How do you choose when bringing pies home! We decided on a Caramel Apple Levee High Pie, a chocolate chip pecan pie and we had to get a cheery fried pie for the ride home!!! I can only say the best of the Blue Owl! Kimmswick is an adorable town with great little shops and historic log cabins and museums!

Yelp
Service was excellent. Prices as shown on reviews. Food was good a little upscale. Old house well maintained good decor.
google avatar

Amy S.

Yelp
Stopped in to get a cookie. Stood at bakery counter and was ignored. The two women behind the counter were talking. One stared at me and continued her conversation. Ended up leaving. Guess I saved money and calories.
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
Really underwhelmed. One of my family members did a Goldbelly for the instagram worthy Levee Apple Pie. I will note that this person is a really really good pastry Chef. The pie was just not good even when everything was followed to the letter. Soggy filling. Adding the topping was harder than a peanut brittle and not a pleasant eating experience. Probably eating here might be better but I would pass on the home delivery of this mammoth pie.

Gary R.

Yelp
Good food, great desserts! The service was excellent as well. It is a great place for lunch and supper!
google avatar

Thom C.

Yelp
The service and food was great!!! Nice sized portions. Lived the vegetable soup. Home made. Rolls were outstanding. 1/2 a salad and sandwich combinations were huge and a great value. The service was outstanding even during the applebutter festival
google avatar

C D.

Yelp
Fun place to visit outside of St. Louis. Known for their pies and cheese cake. I had a turtle cheesecake. Not as sweet as I expected. Also had a dark chocolate turtle. I really want to try the apple pie. Must visit at least once place
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
I have been wanting to try this place for years now! We came here on a Sunday for fried chicken. At the time we got there, I was able to get fried chicken while my husband got breakfast food. Best if both worlds! The fried chicken was fresh, juicy and flavorful. Husband loved his biscuits and gravy. Of course we left with some cookies and cheesecake from the bakery! Next time I'm coming for the apple pie! We did call ahead the day before and make reservations. I highly recommend that. The place gets very busy. It's also nice to walk around downtown Kimmswick as well while you're there!!! Every June, the town of Kimmswick closes down the first weekend to host the annual strawberry festival. I highly recommend that event. Blue owl will have a tent outside their restaurant selling they're desserts. No wait required!!! Parking lot is small here, we parked in town.
google avatar

Alexia S.

Yelp
The sun room is my favorite spot to sit! I love the small town, it's a great place to grab delicious food and desserts. The staff is great, the food is AMAZING!! I got the BLT with sweet potato fries and it was like one of the homemade BLTs my grandma would make for me. The desserts are mouth watering with a huge selection. If you want a chance for more of a dessert selection you want to try and go earlier on weekends!
google avatar

Samantha W.

Yelp
The ambience is good however, I feel like it's expensive for the servings you get. The service was well however and the waitresses know their stuff.
google avatar

Tracy K.

Yelp
The food is okay, the decor and server attire is stuck in the '80's. The desserts are FABULOUS!
google avatar

Andria M.

Yelp
Came here for my birthday on Sunday at 2pm. Made reservations per their recommendations. Limited hours right now. First time at the restaurant, but I had tried their desserts before at events. We sat on the heated indoor patio type room. Large windows allowed for plenty of sunshine. Lots of options. I went with the patty melt which was good, not great. Wish I would have went with the chicken and dumplings, the Sunday special. I tried a bite of the white chili which was really good! My mom loved her quiche. My dad liked his open roast beef. And we all loved the snicker cream pie!
google avatar

Susan P.

Yelp
Annual trip to Blue owl did not disappoint! Love getting the trio, so I can taste a few things ! Quiche Lorraine is my absolute favorite! Until dessert time ! New favorite is the white chocolate banana cream! Thank you Bethany for great service!
google avatar

Renee I.

Yelp
Another good experience here this time for breakfast. It's true that it would take a lot to mess up breakfast food as it is basic but everyone's order came out quickly and most important correctly. Our service was great and they didn't rush us to leave despite having a wait line. We were mindful of that so we didn't linger as long as we would have like to. I'm surprised they didn't open until 10 on Sunday morning but that could be related to staffing issues.

Yelp
This is a review specifically about ordering the *Levee High Caramel Pecan Apple Pie* across country through the GoldBelly delivery service: https://www.goldbelly.com/blue-owl-bakery/levee-high-caramel-pecan-apple-pie. The pie comes frozen and unbaked. It was very well-packed and delivered without an issue. I have no doubt this pie is amazing when baked by their professionals, but their bake-it-yourself experience was NOT as simple as they make it sound and was ultimately unsuccessful. Two things ruined this dessert for me: #1 The instructions provided by the bakery need to be more explicit that the pie is meant to be baked from frozen. This is only subtly mentioned one time in the middle of their 2nd line of instructions: "Brush the top of the frozen pie with the egg wash...". I missed that subtle note even after reading the instructions several times. It just seemed logical to me that the pie would need to be to thawed before baking, but that assumption resulted in the crust sagging down the dome throughout the bake with excess folds of crust at the bottom. #2 Even after baking my thawed pie for 85 mins to get a golden brown crust - 20 mins longer than their instructions for a frozen pie - the thick crust was still raw in the middle which made it not safe to eat. After the fact, I did some research on baking pies and I'm guessing the pie needed to bake for nearly twice the instructed time with an aluminum foil covering to keep the exterior from burning. Unfortunately, I didn't discover the crust was raw until I'd already covered it with the caramel coating, so baking it further wasn't an option. In the end, all I was left with was scooping out the filling and eating it with the small amount of caramel topping I hadn't used to cover the pie. That's tasty, but it's not worth the steep price I paid and is not the dessert experience I expected for my 50th birthday celebration.

Matt H.

Yelp
This bakery middle of Kimmswick doubles as a mediocre restaurant. Service was slow, food was dry and bland, novelty apple pie was undercooked. Outside patio was homely and spacious.

Christy K.

Yelp
Very disappointing to see the difference in ownership by Mary's daughter of The Blue Owl. The service is less than desirable. The servers appear to not be happy working. Our server was not attentive to refill our drinks and would disappear. Two employees were disagreeing in front of customers. The strawberry salad used to have half pecans, now has minimal finely chopped pecans. Cheese soup had a flour taste with minimal cheese. Packaged chocolate chip cookie was dry. My Mom's coconut cream pie crust was soggy and runny.
google avatar

Sara L.

Yelp
Update- Took my mom for her birthday. Service was amazing as was the food. I called ahead for a reservation so there was no wait. LOVED the Wednesday fried chicken special. Mom and I both ordered it. Its a large portion! Mom loved the mile high caramel apple pie. The coconut cream pie was good, but I wouldn't order it again.

Yelp
We'd heard of the Blue Owl and wanted to try it on our first Kimmswick visit. On a Thursday Kimmswick was active with visitors so we opted for lunch shortly after 11am. It was a good decision: A line soon formed due to COVID social distancing requirements inside that left several tables empty. Food portions were generous and service was excellent. We two split a lunch combo that included choice of three items from a list, and added an extra cup of soup. The soup was unnecessary; the Cobb salad half portion could have fed two. A chicken sandwich on croissant was wonderful as was the creamy broccoli soup. The Reuben half sandwich was also generous but a bit off. The corned beef lacked so much of the characteristic taste I wondered if I'd received roast beef. The Thousand Island dressing was barely there and tasted more like mayo. Due to the large portions we skipped dessert but marveled at the slices--suitable for four--delivered to nearby guests.

Kathy T.

Yelp
Fantastic white chil! Their Strawberry Salad is amazing with their house made poppy seed dressing. Service is alway spot on. The ambiance has a very 1980 grandma's house, vibe. Don't let that scare you off. The food is wonderful!
google avatar

Brian B.

Yelp
Excellent place for a nice meal when visiting/shopping in Kimmswick - or worth making a special trip for. Family-friendly, casual eatery with multiple dining rooms as well as a covered patio. (Live music is frequently featured outside.) This business apparently began as a bakery, and the menu, including the dessert offerings, reflects this. Their mile-high apple pie easily satisfied both my wife and I after a hearty lunch. French toast at breakfast was wonderfully sweet and filling, and the country fried steak and eggs practically demanded we take a long walk afterwards. Good for lunch or breakfast! Homey, comfort food restaurant that Cracker Barrel (for example) is only a pale replica of.

Cindy A.

Yelp
Love doing business with local independent businesses. If you ever get a chance to do business with them for pies or a meal, you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Sharon T.

Yelp
Been at Blue Owl many times over the years. Consistently good food and good service. Atmosphere of a rustic old time cafe. Wonderful for lunch.
google avatar

Illona M.

Yelp
First time i tried their famous apple pecan pie was 7 years ago, it was the mist delicious pie i ever had in my life! After that 7 years, i really wanted to come back for the same pie again and this time i ordered 2 for me only. My impression completely dropped this time, it was as good as it used to. The pie dough inside was raw more than half of it from middle to the bottom of the pie. The apple was hard to chew and no cinnamon sauce inside each layer of the apples, completely dry. I tried not to waste them because i drove for an hour to get to this place, but that raw dough and hard to chew apple from inside the pie makes me so upset and disappointed.

John H.

Yelp
Great food, a bit pricey. Love the pies, and pastries. Quaint clean restaurant. Might have you wait for a seat...
google avatar

Carmen T.

Yelp
Stopped by this restaurant for breakfast while visiting from Florida. There aren't many restaurants in this area and I was a bit hesitant to try this one. We pulled into the parking lot with a line of almost 20 people waiting for the restaurant to open. The staff was very inviting and our family of 6 was seated immediately. We placed breakfast order of pancakes, biscuits and gravy, French toast, country fried steak and eggs and bacon. Freshly baked cinnamon rolls with caramel pecan topping was brought to our table giving us a chance to sample the delicious confection. I am so glad I made the decision to patron this place. If you get a chance to visit Kimmswick, Missouri or the surrounding area, do yourself a favor and go have breakfast at the Blue Owl. You will not be disappointed!

Yelp
Levee High Apple Pie!!! That's my review. Ha! Seriously, everything I've ever eaten here is delicious and probably award-winning. Whether you live in the STL metro or from out of town this is a must place to eat. It has all the accolades and more. By the way, if you DO live in the area why have you never been here? Oh, and if you don't like apple pie there are many more incredible bakery treats to choose from.

Robert A.

Yelp
Great food, great service! Cool little town. Salisbury steak was amazing. Best that I have ever had. Highly recommend!!!!

Jack E.

Yelp
I will start with I DO NOT eat sweets. So no comment on the bakery. I ordered the Sunday fried chicken special. This is by far the worst chicken I have ever tried to eat. The breading tasted like plain deep fried flour.
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Day Date to Kimmswick for me and my hubby was interrupted by our daughter wanting to go too!! Always wanting to spend extra time with is a Bonus and this was a first visit for all. The lunch was really yummy. A piece of Spinach artichoke Quich and White chicken chili for me. Cup of Cheese soup and Reuben for the hubs and ... Fillet of Fish Sandwich for the girl. All delicious. You can not go to the Blue Owl without getting dessert.. Banana Cream Pie and Turtle cheesecake... with a mini Levee High Apple Pie (w/Carmel and pecans) to go for later!!! We were stuffed!!! Highly recommend getting there early as the line forms very fadt.

Alberta C.

Yelp
I went to the Blue Owl today, I had the clam chowder for the first time .it was great

Yelp
Cute town! Amazing food with even more amazing service. You most try the apple pie with ice cream!

Yelp
This place is located outside of St Louis. It kind of has a Cracker Barrel feel. It has the best dessert that you could ever imagine. You can park on the street if you would like, but they have a huge parking lot across the street from the restaurant that is reserved for their patrons. The food is "meh". I had the grilled cheese mainly because I wanted to have room for dessert. The Camel Apple Pecan Levee Pie lived up to its hype. It was delicious. It was hard to limit myself to one dessert. They all sounded good and looked even better. Our server, Heather, was excellent. The price of the meal adds up quick and can get a bit pricey. As long as you know this going in and are prepared, you will be fine. I also ordered a strawberry lemonade to drink, which I was disappointed that it did not have any refills. They should at a minimum offer 1 free refill on that drink. So this place is a nice place to visit if you are in town. Making a 40 minute drive there to eat, like i did, is probably not recommended unless you were dying for some good dessert. My three star rating is based on the great service and delicious desserts.
