The 31 Best Restaurants in Kolkata (Calcutta), India | Eater

"Tibetan momos are easily among Kolkata’s favorite snacks, and restaurateur Doma Wang is often dubbed the city’s momo queen. A native of Kalimpong, Wang has been running a restaurant inside Kolkata’s Sikkim House for more than two decades. Now called Blue Poppy Thakali, the restaurant serves food from Wang’s home in the Himalayas, a mix of Tibetan and Nepali dishes with a few Chinese favorites thrown in. While her pork kothay (pot stickers) and delicate-skinned momos stuffed with juicy mincemeat have a cult following, old-timers swear by her chile pork. Also look out for meat-filled Tibetan pies called phalay, fortifying bowls of thukpa (Tibetan noodle soup), Nepal’s famed sel roti (ring-shaped fried bread made of rice flour), sungur ko masu with rai saag (pork cooked with mustard greens), and regional condiments like gundruk, or fermented radish leaves." - Priyadarshini Chatterjee

The blue poppy is situated at the sikkim house ,Park Street.Mainly serve nepali and indo chinese food. We ordered mutton momo, Manchurian momo- veg, golden fried prawn ball, mixed meat noodles and caramel custard and in drinks ginger lime and masala cola. All foods are pretty average except caramel custard. Resturant is very neat and clean and staff are well behaved and courteous.

Blue Poppy Thakali offers a cozy, homely vibe with its traditional floor-seating style that immediately sets it apart. The ambience is simple yet warm, making it a nice spot for a casual meal. We tried the Kothe Momo, Boba drinks, and two different types of noodles. The flavors were absolutely delightful — fresh, authentic, and satisfying. However, the portion sizes felt a bit on the smaller side compared to the pricing. Overall, it was a decent experience — great taste, good atmosphere, though the serving size could be improved. Worth a visit if you enjoy authentic flavors in a cozy setup.

The Blue Poppy Thakali – Great Food, Poor Ambience (Not Recommended for Muslims) The Blue Poppy Thakali serves tasty food, no doubt about that! However, the ambience is quite disappointing — it feels like they haven’t put any effort into it at all. Despite that, the food quality makes up for it. Be prepared to wait for a seat on weekends, as the place gets quite crowded. Important note for Muslim visitors: They serve pork and cook pork, chicken and other items in the same pan — just by washing it in between. This may not be suitable or acceptable for those who follow dietary restrictions, especially Muslims. Visit for the food, not the vibe — but only if the cooking process aligns with your dietary preferences.

Food is great here. An authentic Tibetan place right at the heart of Sikkim House. Their cafe Boma is making exceptional matcha on a budget. Steam pork momos are superb paired with their in house sauce. Although they charge extra for the chilli oil (which does not make sense at all) minus points for that. Ema Datshi here is definitely a must try.

The food tastes okayish, nothing exhilarating. We paid approx 1k for 2 ppl, we ordered pam fried momo, momo noodles and boba drink. The quantity is very low for two people in accordance with their price. Atmosphere is good, specially liked their ground seating arrangement which reminds of chinese/japanese seating style. Service is good but the place is quite overhyped as per my experience. P.S: Tried mocha chocolate boba drink but very dissapointed as it tasted very sugary which is not expected at all!

Food here is entirely different from Bengali Chinese cuisine. Those who have a taste for food from Sikkim, Nepal and Tibet will love this place. For example, the Chicken Kothay Momo is entirely different. The flavor is different and tastes different following a bite. Stir Fried Bokchoy is a rarity in other restaurants and we love these greens; very lightly fried, retaining the original colors and very low on spices. Chicken Phalay is very Sikkimese; closer to a thicker Bengali Kachuri with a heavy filling of chicken, onions and spices. We also had Chicken Shapta, a Tibetan dry chicken curry a bit heavy on chilli, although excellent in taste. Chicken Fried Rice was fine, not extraordinary though, a bit dry, perhaps. We savour the food here and reminisce our time in Sikkim and Nepal.

Its not higher than expectation, did not tried Thakali thali as it is incomplete without Rai ko saag. Tried Momos obviously steamed one the original but not that juicy like Nanglo bakery (KTM) (expected). Momos 2 out of 5, Chilli butter wings ok 3 out of 5, Ema Datsi new to me, chessy gravy goes well with Tingmo 4 out of 5. May be because of tradition it wont comes with minced meat, I am not sure but it would be better if have some non veg option Mutton Phalays was good deep fried home made patties kind reminds me holi ki non veg namkin Gujia 4 out of 5. Tingmo were soft and floppy liked it 4 out of 5. Finally Boma masala cola WOW 5 out of 5 a masala cola with fully carbonated no gas loss because of mixing perfected flavoured and salty crossed the expectation 5+ on 5. Blue lemon was also good. Food may be good but my expectations ws higher when i heard Thakali. It never reminds me about the taste of Mugling Thakali thalis Overall 4 out of 5.

I had been meaning to go to the place for a long time, and I finally got the chance to visit. The place is cosy with options for both tables and chairs and on floor seating. The food is quite flavourful, but do not think they have "authentic Nepalese" taste to them. However, the drinks(from BOMA) were absolutely overpriced. The price is neither complimented in quality or quantity. The service is a little slow, but that could be chalked out to the busy atmosphere. We ordered Kothay Momos, Golden Fried Prawn Balls, and Chilly Butter Wings. For drinks, we have a mojito and lime soda. Both of them were alright. The butter wings were very juicy and delicious. The prawn balls had a very subtle flavour that I liked, and the momos were quite tasty.
