The West End Pubs That Aren't Horrible Guide - London - The Infatuation

"There are lots of pubs with the same name around the West End and The Blue Posts is one of them. Although there’s the cleaner cut one of the same name on the edge of Chinatown, it’s The Blue Posts on Berwick Street that’s the one to go to. In recent years this red-carpeted boozer has become something of a home to hypebeasts given its vicinity to Palace and Supreme stores (the former launched their collaboration with Stella Artois here). But it’s still one of the OG Soho pubs of character that also draws in some of the area’s most long-standing characters. Expect geezers, three-piece suits, and pints of lager all around." - Jake Oliver

🚇 Tottenham Court Road 🍺 £4.90 Carlsberg This pub is located on Berwick Street in the heart of Soho. The nearest Tube station is Tottenham Court Road. A pub has stood on this site since at least 1739. The pub you see today, built in a neo-Georgian style and dates from a complete rebuild in 1914. On the side of the pub, there is a green plaque commemorating Jessie Matthews who was born on Berwick Street in 1907. The pub was destroyed by a brontosaurus in the 1925 animated film The Lost World—apparently, the animators used to drink here. In more recent times, the pub was featured in an episode of Peppa Pig. This is a traditionally decorated oldschool pub that retains all the hallmarks of a proper London boozer. The servery is horseshoe shaped and is centrally located. The decor consists of white anaglypta wallpaper with a brown tiled border below, leather and velour banquette seating with matching stools, an original fireplace with mirror above, photos of Jessie Matthews and historical London scenes, commemorative plates of Queen Elizabeth and a proper pub carpet. Upstairs there is a function room which hosts comedy and live music. The beer line-up includes a selection of well-known brands, some independent brews, and two cask ales. I opted for a Carlsberg—my pint was excellent and cost less than a fiver. This is a wet-led pub, so no food is served. I arrived at 4 p.m. on a sunny Friday afternoon in May. There were a dozen or so punters inside, where it was chilled and relaxed, but the majority were standing outside, enjoying the weather and the humdrum of central Soho. The service was superb—the team on duty were friendly, personable, and made you feel right at home. Wow, what an absolutely outstanding pub this is. Soho has changed so much over the last 25 years and feels like a more sanitised place, but here they’re holding on to everything that was great about Soho—and they’re not changing any time soon. I’m not sure the perfect London pub exists, but this Soho boozer comes close. 📅 21st May 2025 If you want to see all my pub reviews in one place, head to @londonpubmap on Instagram. 🍻

Hidden gem! Cozy pub vibes downstairs and upstairs is the last independent stand-up stage in town. Perfect for a spontaneous afterwork hangout. And bonus top: tickets are £2 cheaper at the door than online.

The Blue Posts is basically and old man's pub transported into the heart of London's nightlife. As such it's something of a legend in Soho and while this was my first visit. I'm already a big fan. The decor's traditional and so were the punters, apart from the young couple constantly taking selfies. It also maintains the 11pm closing time as well. If you look carefully at the bar you'll spot what I'm guessing is a real rarity now - if it's genuine - a Watney's pump handle still in use. There's more Watneys on the outside and the building itself is a beauty.

One of my favorite pubs in London, Great vibes and feels like a legit pub. Nice place to sip a pint and relax. A little rough around the edges but in THE BEST WAYS!

This place was fabulous. Off the main strip by a block, and that made a world of difference. Went to watch an English Premier Soccer game as there was no other pub showing it. The drinks were great and decently priced. The food was top-notch. When I think of a traditional English pub, this would be a little too modern, but it isn't a posh pretender either. Anyone can feel at home in this place, and the prices are very reasonable. Would go back again!

Yelp
Place is good enough for a quick beer and maybe a quick bar. Right on a popular tourist area.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick beer while walking around Leicester Square. Fun environment, fast and friendly service, and good drinks. I got the house-lager, and my girlfriend got the cider-beer that was on tap. Both were great.

Yelp
Monopoly Pub Crawl - Stop #12 - Piccadilly (Yellow) It was time to tackle a new color group and the Blue Posts seemed a fitting stop. It's hard to think of Piccadilly as a "Yellow" given most Londoners would automatically associate it with blue (thanks very much TfL) and even more so when the pub is blue too. But anyways, that's neither here or there and completely irrelevant. The pub is a bit small but does the best with the available space. From recollection (which is getting hazy by now), the bartender wasn't thrilled to see us but grudgingly accepted that the majority of customers he was likely to see were crawlers. Given the location, I can't imagine many people will stumble across this place and I've cycled every street in this area without noticing it. Overall, it's actually a very comfortable place to sit down and rest tired feet which unfortunately isn't a good idea for a time pressured crawl. There was nothing on offer that stood out so I assume it had the standard ales and lagers with a few wines in the cooler behind the bar. The toilets are down some steps so be careful if you've had a few!

Yelp
After a cracking meal at the Mediterranean with old friends we popped into the Blue Posts to finish off the evening. Being a Friday it was heaving but we got the first round in (the Adnams was superb) and went upstairs in the hope of a seat. We found a table with the last 3 chairs and I asked the barmaid if there were any more. She apologised that all were gone and I carried on talking with the others. 10 mins later, the barmaid brought another chair and we stayed a lot longer. Her name was Ginny and the thoughtful service was much appreciated. Tony Payton

Yelp
Yeah, this pub is alright. Certainly ticked all the boxes on Friday night anyway. What are my boxes? Busy enough to be fun? Check. Still space to breathe? Check. Good selection of drinks? Check. Pear cider? Check (twice, because it's yummy). Friendly staff? Check. One of the barmaids was a bit doddery and messed up a couple of orders, but y'know, the old folk here are part of its charm. And when a horrid man letched over my and my friend, we were rescued rather chivalrously by one of the gents who worked here. His name is Maurice. He was cool. So was his friend John, who's quite the cook apparently. If you won't somewhere fun and cosy on Friday where shots at the bar aren't a prerequisite, then come here. Shame they only have one tiny ladies loo, otherwise they might have got five stars out of me. I really like it here.

Yelp
I was in the The Blue Posts on July 6, and witnessed something very disturbing. A young women stopped in there to see a friend that works there while she was out shopping and she accidentally bumped a mans beer and it spilled. She was not aware that she did this, I witnessed it her bag bumped it over. He then grabbed her arm and yelled at her, she tried to apologize and explain that she wasn't aware and offered to buy him a new one but his anger just escalated. The point is that he grabbed her arm roughly and not one person went to her defense. The bartender then gave her shot to calm her and she declined it....she doesn't drink....the manager then poured it out like she was at fault....this women did nothing wrong .. I found her outside and she was scared and still crying from the violent way that this man grabbed her....I apologized for not coming to her defense when it happened but I was across the room and I wasn't fast enough. The manager should have intervened, it was an accident she apologized and no one has the right to get in anyone's space and forcefully touch them.....

Yelp
A proper old Soho pub. Good beer, interesting people to watch and toilets hidden behind a door marked 'Private'. I think you can eat too but I've not done that yet. Well worth a visit.

Yelp
What is good about Blue Posts? That there was breathing space on a Saturday night, even able to have a seat to enjoy our drinks. I was ona tipsy rum run that night, and to be honest, there isn't much more to describe. A nice enough pub to visit for a few beers and a good chat, so works as well as such.

Yelp
Another pub for the locals of Soho rather than the tourists. It's not a bad place, they have one or occasionally two ales and the usual lagers. It's an old world London boozer but Berwick Street is still mostly an old world London street. This is another place to include on your beer tour of Soho's less popular places. It doesn't really feel Soho, it does feel like the sort of pub that catered for the ordinary people of central London, when ordinary people could still afford to live in it. Which due to the social housing on this street, they can.

Yelp
A useful pub with an upstairs you can hire. Tucked down a side road, it is central but not too crowded so great for organising a meet up for a large number. Friendly.

Yelp
I had two great cask poured ales including one, hobgoblin, that I've had out of a bottle here in the states, just wonderful. We ate there too my wife had the cottage pie, I had a grilled pork steak with a mustard gravy special, they were really good. A great way to end a nice afternoon

Yelp
Pub in central Londan which has character (i.e. old man pub). Upstairs Bar you can hire. Worth a visit along with Bradleys Spainish Bar between TCR & Oxford Street.
