Nine Restaurants and Bars in Mad River Valley, Vermont - Eater Montreal

"There are a handful of pizza places in the area, but Blue Stone’s hand-tossed crust is likely the best. Its Waitsfield location, which opened in 2015, is the second of three locales. Its success is unsurprising considering its classic cocktail menu, an extensive list of non-pizza menu items, and the kind of rustic and cozy atmosphere one craves while nestled amongst the green mountains." - Heather Platt

This was a great little spot. Not to far from Warren Falls and several little cheese and maple syrup spots. Top 5 pizza spot ever. Our server looked to be by himself but was awesome. Great specialty pizzas and drums.

Google
Blue Stone is a must every time we are in the Waitsfield area. For years they had this amazing vegetarian pie called Bio-Dome (basil pesto, mozzarella, spinach, fresh tomato, feta, and artichoke hearts) that I truly thought about way too often but on my most recent trip I found out that it's been removed from the menu — devastating BUT the good news is that any pie you get from Blue Stone will be delicious (I opted for a build your own this most recent visit). The staff is awesome, the atmosphere of the restaurant is great, and the location is super convenient if you're in the area for skiing. This review was made in connection with a Toast promotion.

Got take-out here after a long day and it was amazing! Good prices, good size sandwiches!! Pictured is the Bahn Mi!

Google
The blue stone had great service and great food!! My husband and i are visiting out of town. We were looking for chill place for quick food. We found it here. The waitress was really nice. We got appertizers and a pizza. The pizza was delicious. We chose the pizza- pizza. It had a red sauce, sausage, cheese, green bell peppers, and red onions. We decided against mushrooms. It was 16 for small 10 inch. The bigger 16 inch was 27. The large felt really expensive. We got a small here. I defiantly advise sharing here if you just want a taste. The fries were hand cut fries with salt. The house nachos were my favorite. The nachos were corn chips with house queso, limes, and pulled chicken. It was very flavorable.

Google
Food and service was really fantastic!! You WILL have to wait! It is busy and most places are understaffed. If you have a small party I’d recommend sitting at the bar - you can only sit if you’re gonna eat. The bartender was super nice and helpful - the food came out hot. The wings were perfectly crispy!! The pizza came out piping hot - pepperoni was flavorful and artichokes were juicy! The Buffalo chicken pizza was a perfect balance of spicy and sweet. The gluten free crust for the pizza was crispy and delicious! All the servers and people working are working really hard so tip them well!! They also had ski themed cocktails which were good and a large selection of beer.

Google
Awesome pizza and great service. Exactly what we were hoping for. My family dined in after a local bike race last weekend. My boys were both starving. We ordered 3 small pizza's and one large. The pizza were the Farmer’s Daughter, Three Little Pigs, The Pomo #4, and The Blue Stone. Topped off with glass of wine and a solid IPA. The pizza's were delivered quickly and together. All of the pizzas were delicious. We voted and the winner was the 'Three Little Pigs'. We went home full and content.

Ate on the covered deck. The Stone salad was a good size for sharing. Greens were crisp. Loved the sweet potato curls. The Farmers Daughter pizza was great! Lots of roasted garlic, fresh mozz, pesto and plenty of tasty sauce. Great beer list! Service was excellent. Waitress was very pleasant and checked on us often.

Yelp
This place gets slammed during the winter holidays. It's one of the few restaurants in town that does not take reservations, which we love, since we aren't good at getting our act together in advance for reservations most of the time -- but wait times can be very long. Pizza remains good, with an enjoyable, crisp, thin crust that falls somewhere between St. Louis style and New York style. It make the kiddos happy especially when they do their own builds -- a pesto base for one kiddo, marinara for the other. In years past, we had issues with over-salting and over-cheesing. Not this time around. Salads are a bit meh and small and overpriced for what they are, but ah well. I never seem to remember the lesson! I know staff were working hard, but b/c of the crowds, there were long waits and little check-in. We had to flag folks down for more water, a delayed dish, and at the end the check. Next time: takeout!

Yelp
Not too shabby! My husband and I were trying to find a place that was opened since so many places were either closed or the wait was too long! Thankfully this place had a bar, so the wait wasn't bad... we even talked to another patron who was also waiting; he was extremely kind and we had a great conversation! Parking was easy and the lot is a fairly decent size. Staff was extremely busy, so it took a little time to actually order to go (we weren't in any rush!). The restaurant is definitely a locals' spot where people hangout or takeaway. The pizzas are quite large and what we ordered was pretty good! We definitely had left overs. I can't say it was the best pizza we had, but it definitely helped the cravings. *THE PIZZA-PIZZA: Red Sauce, Pepperoni, Mushrooms, Sausage, Green Bell Peppers, Red Onion: Big (16") $27. In the end, I can say I would be back to try other dishes.

Yelp
The food was good, had a pizza, wife had the Bahn mi and said it was one of the best she has had. Service was horrendous. We watched multiple tables asking for things and not getting them, things on checks that didn't belong, food was slow. We asked for a glass of ice for the room temp water 3 times before I went to the bar to ask for them myself. Server there was rude and asked me "if I was talking shit about her friend" wtf? No, just want some f-ing ice. Waited quite a while for the check too. The only thing the Server did quickly was bus tables so she could get sat more even though she couldn't handle what she had. Ugh.

Yelp
We traveled 7 hours to see the eclipse in Vermont and came across this little gem. Good hearty fresh food with accommodating service. Especially when they were closing and we got our order in on time! Ambiance is rustic as is all establishments in the area. The five of us enjoyed ourselves and we left stuffed to high heaven!

Yelp
You need to come here! Not only is the food absolutely delicious but the staff is even better. For a starter, we got the fries with garlic aioli. The fries were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The sauce itself was the perfect garlic aioli and paired greatly with the fries. We got "The Duke" - Pepper Crusted Steak, Roasted Mushroom, Crispy Onions, Cheddar, Garlic Mayo, Flatbread Wrap. The steak was perfectly cooked, the flavor was on point, and the wrap itself was nice and chewy. "The Boolegger" - Pulled Pork, House BBQ, Pickled Onion, Cabbage, Carrot & Scallion Slaw, Brioche Bun. The pulled pork was nice and juicy while the slaw gave it a nice crunch. Both of these came with a nice side salad with a slightly sweet vinaigrette. Overall the meal was great and we will be coming back again to try the rest of the menu. P.S So I forgot the leftovers and went back, but they already threw them away. This is why I think the service is even better than the food. Instead of just sending me away with a sorry, which is totally understandable, they gave us 3 HUGE slices of pepperoni pizza. (Thank you again!) This place is definitely somewhere you NEED to check out, you won't be disappointed

W C.

Yelp
A solid place to get some interesting pizzas. Not a particularly standout place, but the food is pretty tasty, the service is good, and the prices are okay. I'll put it this way: there are nicer places to eat, but you won't leave disappointed.
google avatar

Rich Z.

Yelp
Very good pizza and salads. Sat outside. Socially distanced. Good beer selection. Order 30 mins in advance and pick up to take to the picnic tables.

Yelp
Stopped here on Saturday and the place was slammed. Due to half the restaurant being occupied by an actual bus load of skiers, we were told the wait would be about 45 minutes. While waiting we went over to the bar area (like everyone else who was waiting) to grab a couple beers. Brandon was the bartender and was also working the service bar making all the mixed drinks and pouring the beers for all of the tables. He acknowledged us and let us know it would be a few minutes til he could help us - which we totally understood. When we got our beers, it just so happened that the people who were sitting at the bar in front of us had their name called for a table so we decided to just sit at the bar. We ordered buffalo wings and a large pizza, half the Pomo #4 and the other half Pizza-Pizza. The food was great! Brandon was also friendly and personable and kept his cool the entire time while he was slinging all the drinks and waiting on the bar! He recommended some great spots in Burlington to try and watch the solar eclipse. This isn't a fancy restaurant by any means, but I highly recommend stopping here if you are in the mood for pizza/wings and beer!

Jennifer H.

Yelp
They are always open and the service is good. They will make any kind of pizza that you want. It's a great little place if you are interested in casual dining.

Luis A.

Yelp
Outstanding pizza. Create your own pie or try one of their delicious pizza. We ordered farmer daughter plus created our own. Happy servers excellent quality ingredients good beers. I highly recommend them as it's nice staff and easy to get a table.

Yelp
Amazing pizza, amazing staff, amazing beer!! And great outside seating area!! This is the best of the Blue stones that we have been to. It is the only one with a wood fired oven unlike Waterbury or Montpelier. And...... I just found that the other two locations recently closed. But this is the one you want to come to anyway. If you are wondering if it is worth the drive.... Yes it is!!
google avatar

Thomas F.

Yelp
Great wood fired pizzas! Very friendly staff, weather dining in or ordering take out.
google avatar

Leigh S.

Yelp
Pizza was just ok. Should have asked for it to be cooked well done. Service was friendly and pretty fast given that every table was taken. Extra star given for being one of the only restaurants open on a Wednesday night in mid- April.
google avatar

Moira S.

Yelp
The food was great. The stone salad was a delight. The gluten-free pizza crust did its job to deliver with some delicious toppings on the restaurants namesake pie. Service was very sweet. It gets busy on Saturday nights so plan accordingly.
google avatar

Classy C.

Yelp
Was in and out in a half an hour. Pizza is amazing!!!! Service was fast and great. Would recommend.
google avatar

Reinne T.

Yelp
We had to wait for two hours for our pizza because the place was overwhelmingly crowded after a day of skiers coming in from the slopes. But it was totally worth the wait we absolutely love the pizza we ordered the three little pigs pizza and the stumpy mushroom pizza gluten-free version. Oh my God gluten-free shouldn't taste that good but it tasted amazing. And the three little pigs was absolutely amazing. Our friends ordered the large Farmer's daughter - which is funny to order but They absolutely loved it. Wish this place was closer to New Hampshire but it's all the way up in Waitsfield Vermont and we need to visit again

Luis M.

Yelp
One star until the vegan pizza returns. I was teased with an amazing pizza (Farmers Daughter) with vegan cheese. I dunno what they used, but it was damned good. Then, they stopped. No real good reason. Anyway, until it's back, the 1-star remains.
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
I was almost persuaded not to visit because of some of the reviews I read. But I'm glad I didn't. The pizza is excellent. We had the Number 2 (Kalamata olives, feta, artichoke hearts, tomato, onion and oregano cream) and the Farmers Daughter (chunky tomatoes, garlic cloves, fresh mozzarella and pesto). We also had the Root Cellar salad as an appetizer which was delicious. The beer selection was great - 14 on tap including one from my favorite Vermont brewery Hill Farmstead. Very light wait on a Saturday night and we ended up sitting at the bar where Emily immediately impressed us with her high quality service and entertainment. Will definitely return. Perhaps tomorrow!

Kara B.

Yelp
We went on a Wednesday at 4pm and we had the place to ourselves. The waitress was extremely friendly and attentive. Place was very clean and there were many tables to choose from, so we chose to sit by the window. We ordered a bacon pizza for my bacon-loving 8 year old, wings with golden BBQ (which is a mustard-based sauce - my 10 year old didn't realize this when he ordered it but he ate it anyway), the poutine, and a Duke sandwich (steak, cheese, mushrooms, onions on flatbread) and a basket of fries. The pizza was decent. My kid loved it and ate it all. Poutine was good - it's a tough thing though to not be completely soggy, they did an okay job. I was a little disappointed because on the menu online it said it had pork belly and they substituted it for mushrooms. It was fine, just unexpected. My husband loved his sandwich. The wings were plentiful but not super crispy. Everything was pretty decent. I'd probably go back if we were here for longer.
google avatar

Alec M.

Yelp
Great pizza. Busy place to eat. Glad I ordered my food to go, it was about 90+ degrees inside. Staff were very helpful and friendly. I will be back next time I'm in town.
google avatar

Jon C.

Yelp
I don't know what's happened to this place in a year but absolutely horrific experience. Waited at the door for 20 minutes before being seated. Table was filthy. Service was non existent. There are so many other good options in town, choose something else. Oh and plan on getting your own drinks too.

Lisa D.

Yelp
The pizza and salad were phenomenal. Yet, the service was out of this world. Our server was bombarded with customers and worked diligently to maintain his side of the restaurant.

Beth O.

Yelp
We are locals and get our pizza here every Friday night. The pizza is fantastic, as are all the other options (love the salads). We do eat in the restaurant from time to time, especially now with the pinball machines (big hit with our son) and it's super cozy. Great staff, awesome food, we are so happy that we have Blue Stone in our neighborhood. Get the basket of fries with garlic aioli!
google avatar

Jason K.

Yelp
We've been twice now during visits to the area. During our most recent trip we had a variety of food from pizzas to salads to wings. We had the 3little pigs pizza and the mad hatter; both were great! We had the garlic knots; outstanding (better love garlic!) - and buffalo wings that were meaty and flavorful. We arrived in the middle of a busy night and had a few beers while we waited. The bartender was welcoming and helpful and the beers were great. When we were seated, we ended up waiting a pretty long time - once we pointed that out, the host jumped in and took our orders and took care of us. Our food moved pretty quickly and we were comped some drinks. The food was great and once the host jumped in, the service hit the mark.

Becky K.

Yelp
Hard to catch this place open but spent a great happy hour at the bar with 4 friends recently. Excellent craft beer menu and enjoyed pizza and dirty fries off their bar menu. Burgers we saw coming out were huge. Emily was our super friendly bar maid. Would give 5 stars but didn't really fully test the kitchen.

Rachael H.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic pizza. Crunchy and not too thick, little to no grease. Very good garlic knots as well. Better than expected! Inside was cute and homey. Staff was polite and kind! Would definitely recommend for lunch or dinner!
google avatar

Stacey P.

Yelp
Pizza was unbelievable! And the beer selections were also amazing. Delicious food, and cozy atmosphere. Waitsfield location pizza was from a pizza oven and it made all the difference in how good it was. The crust was SO good! We went here twice in our most recent stay and would definitely come back next time we were in town.
google avatar

Eileen L.

Yelp
We are traveling and have our dog with us. We checked into our ski cabin (during Summer) and it was full of things that would likely not survive a puppy left alone. We called to see if they were pet friendly because it's Vermont and those things happen. They said they were. Note: They are dog friendly in the picnic area which is designed for beer really. My husband did not specify we wanted to eat. However, the bartender helped us get an order in, made sure we were taken care of, and brought our food out and checked if we needed anything multiple times. All of which he did not have to do. We have eaten here in the past and the food and beer is always great! Must try the Poutine.

Justin P.

Yelp
Split a small farmers daughter (add chicken) and an order of maple ginger soy wings with my wife. The food was ready for carry out 10 minutes earlier than expected and was delicious. Must give them a try if you are here on vacation!
google avatar

Grayson E.

Yelp
Sold me a gluten free calzone, which they apparently can't do. Received a gf pizza instead of a call to see if I wanted something different after driving 20 minutes to pick up. No refund for the price difference, pizza is $2 less than calzone. Pizza wasn't even loaded up, $4+ in toppings and you get nothing for that price. If you need to rip people off by a couple bucks and offer stuff at a premium price that your going to ration out to stay in business it might be time to just close down. Rude customer service, glad I won't be getting ripped off here again. Pathetic really, $21 small pizza, ffs...
google avatar

M J.

Yelp
Went last night and the place was slammed. Huge credit to the fab hostess and lone (!) bartender holding it all together so well despite the throngs of customers. Food and drink was all good, per usual, BUT... they lose a star for ambiance. As we all know, lighting and music can ruin the experience - and this night the hideously loud/angry music (Rage, Beasties- not kidding) just killed it for us. It's like the kitchen picked it for them despite the speakers being pointed at us. We waited an hour for our table but couldn't get out fast enough. So baffling. Also, a word to the clueless party of 6 who sat at our table for a prolonged period, chatting after their meal was done. It's really not at all polite to do so when so many people are waiting for a table. Duh.
google avatar

Audrey O.

Yelp
Blue Stone is a great option for quick pizza when staying at Sugarbush!! I have no complaints about this place. The pizzas were all well cooked and had a great crust, and all the toppings were satisfactory. Additionally, the salads were much better than the typical "pizza place salad," and tasted very fresh. The reason why Blue Stone gets a 4 star review rather than a 5 star review is because the toppings were good but nothing special, and I've definitely had more exciting pizzas before. However, this place is a great option and I will be back.
google avatar

Matt K.

Yelp
The first Blue Stone in Waterbury must be successful if they can open another, this one is very new and there are some service kinks for sure, but overall it's a great place for casual food. We ordered one of their many Vermont beers on tap, they have all the great ones such as Lawson's and Hill Farmstead. And we ordered a cocktail. Then we waited. Finally the beer comes without the cocktail, the bartender was out of one of the ingredients. So we ordered a different one which ended up arriving at the same time as the pizza. Generally speaking, service was slow, but they were unprepared for the volume of business. It seems not very many restaurants were open on Memorial Day weekend. Soup of the day was a pork chili soup, which was basically pulled pork in a spicy tomato broth with cilantro. It was quite good. We ordered two of the 10 inch pizzas which turned out to be way too much for us, I think some folks could easily split one, especially if you have an appetizer to start. The pizza was very good, a thin chewy and also crispy crust, toppings were fresh, including partially oven roasted tomatoes. There were many items on the menu I will come back for, salads, burgers, even a poutine appetizer! I think this place will be very popular.
google avatar

Sarah W.

Yelp
The Blue Stone is always a delicious meal. The atmosphere is great and relaxed- a perfect way to end the day either off the slopes or from the local swimming hole. Good for kids and adults alike. Menu has great regular options and the specials hit the mark, too.
google avatar

Dianne A.

Yelp
Our pizza was pretty cold when we picked it up We ordered online and then called to ask for a later pickup time We brought it home and it was pretty cold We ended up having to reheat it which is not a big deal but we did say we were going to pick it up at a certain time I believe the pizza was sitting there cold until we picked it up. The taste of the pizza uneventful
google avatar

Karen R.

Yelp
We had a superb dinner last night at the Blue Stone, on the restaurant's first evening of indoor dining since Covid. The pizza, dirty mac & cheese, burgers, and salads were all first rate. But what impressed us the most was the service. The staff -- which was lean -- ran from table to table to provide great and friendly service. We know that the whole region is suffering from staffing shortages, but the staff at the Blue Stone somehow managed to take great care of us. We highly recommend paying the newly re-opened Blue Stone a visit!

Beth D.

Yelp
Terrific burger. Perfectly medium rare (some restaurants won't do it). The meat was juicy and flavorful, perfectly seasoned. Super fast service for takeout.
google avatar

Anna E.

Yelp
Great spot! They have an excellent selection of local beers on draft. The staff is friendly and service is prompt. Also the food is great awesome pizza and sandwiches.
google avatar

Caitie B.

Yelp
Pizza is fresh and delicious. Always a good choice! Really enjoyed the farmers daughter.
google avatar

Mark V.

Yelp
Usually the Stromboli is spot on but the last two times not so much. The one I got tonight was under cooked with alot of raw dough...yuk. The one before was under cooked and burnt on the bottom. Both times the side of sauce was ice cold. Get your shit together chef!
google avatar

Ramon D.

Yelp
The Duke is the winner! Hearty and very tasty. Perfect with a Hill Farmstead Legitimacy IPA. The Pulled Pork Taco is also really good. But the Duke is a clear winner tonight.
google avatar

Gaelen M.

Yelp
Went here on mlk weekend. Night started well. Ordered a salad, pizza and two beers with my friend. The bartender was great. The food was pretty good. Things were going well until my friend made a joke about how Lawsons was not brewed in Vermont, at which point some pudgy person on the other side of the bar got disgruntled about the comment. I tried to explain it was just a joke. The bartender and a patron agreed but the pudgy guy in the corner continued to give us a hard time, requesting that we leave. Turns out it was the owner. Apparently drunk and angry, I could not explain to him that it was cool and we were only joking around with the bartender. It seems like this place is run by a person who has problems. I will not return but i hope the staff that dispassionately apologized for their bosses aggressive and unprofessional behavior moves on to better things.

James B.

Yelp
Great pizza, pretty alright burger, solid fries, lemonade tasted like battery acid.............
google avatar

Beach L.

Yelp
Traveling through Vermont we stumbled across this restaurant. I was pleasantly surprised. I also got a Pitchfork salad with tahini dressing that was amazing. But the garlic cream sauce on my pizza, photo attached, was unbelievably good. Not to mention the cheeses. Staff was nice also.
google avatar

Nicole M.

Yelp
Great local atmosphere, friendly staff, delicious food and a full bar with craft beer, this place is a perfect stop. The pizza was cooked perfectly, bubbly cheese and crispy, wood fired crust. Careful of the garlic knots, they have full cloves in them and can have a bit of a bite! Overall we loved and we'll be back for sure.
google avatar

Carrie A.

Yelp
Stopped by here for lunch after a morning of hiking. I was very impressed with the menu-lots of delicious sounding salads and pizzas which was just what I was in the mood for. They also have a good selection of draft beers and wine. I started with the Bohemian salad-which was kale, roasted brussels sprouts, tofu, feta and sesame-ginger dressing. Wish there had been more b-sprouts but on the whole this was excellent. We ordered 2 small pizzas to share, the stump jumper and the mousetrap. Both were great with thin, crispy crusts. All of our food arrived quickly and our server was pleasant and efficient. Would recommend this place to anyone looking for a quick, casual lunch or dinner option.
google avatar

Sean F.

Yelp
I have worked as a pizza cook and I'm originally from New York. For these reasons I consider myself an expert when it comes to pizza. This place in my opinion has the best pizza in Vermont.
google avatar

Phil C.

Yelp
I was hoping and praying for more. Ordered a small pie with tomato mozzarella and basil. It came out like some frozen pie warmed over? Not sure they know what pizza is today! I was half hoping for pizza Napolitana but sadly nooo...this is almost Greek style pizza. The place in Waterbury is better. Beer selection is good though. Hence the 2 stars. Second trip to this place, a bit more service and food choices. We ordered a pizza in special with rapini it was good better than before. Don't order the burger it has some weird seasoning that tastes like Adolf's meat tenderizer
google avatar

Tony L.

Yelp
For many years, this was a pub/restaurant we frequented called The Den. With hopeful anticipation, we went to the new iteration for lunch. They retained some of the appearance of the old place, but upgraded and expanded. It looks great - warm and inviting - and they've added a pizza oven and a fireplace in the dining area. Although they have an extensive assortment of gourmet pizzas, including gluten free, this is much more than a pizza joint. For lunch, we ordered everything from a hot, wedge salad to gluten free pizza and a burger (8 oz!). Everything was delicious and definitely a big step up from normal pub food. They have an extensive list of beers on tap, as well as a full bar. The staff is very friendly and attentive. We'll definitely be back!
