12 Best Indian Restaurants in Charlotte | Eater Carolinas

"Nestled behind Eggspectation in Ballantyne Village, come for an upscale but decidedly unpretentious ambience where you’ll find dimmed lights, artistic room dividers, friendly waitstaff, and fast service. Express lunch entrees are around $18, and dinner tops out around $21 per person, including longtime faves like a velvety chicken makhani (aka butter chicken), traditional kormas, tikkas, and plentiful veg options." - Shindy Chen

The Blue Taj was a great find for an impromptu dinner with a friend visiting from out of town after a trip to The Bowl. The location is nice, though it's tucked away a bit and easy to miss at first. We didn't have reservations, but the friendly staff happily seated us on the heated patio, which was perfect. We ordered several appetizers, all of which were delicious, and our entrees were equally impressive. The service was very attentive throughout our meal. My only minor note is that the drinks were a bit sweeter than I typically prefer, but overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would definitely return

My Husband and I ate here on Valentine’s and I LOVED IT 💋From the romantic atmosphere , the food being prepared fresh and it was a hidden Gem ⭐️Everything was EXQUISITE!!❤️

The food was very delicious. We were a mixed bunch of Vegan/veg and non vegetarians. All of us enjoyed the food. The dal makhni, leek kofta (different texture from usual ones), and mango chana chaat were very good. The service wasn't very good. They are probably understaffed. The place is very hot and can do with better air conditioning and ventilation. Half the tables need an upgrade

Went to this place couple weeks ago after being recommended by many of my friends. Upon entering was welcomed with somewhat flat/warm welcome. We were seated within 5 minutes of getting there. Place was busy but ambiance looked very nice and happening. Our server was kind, funny and had nice people skills. Food was very delicious and tasty. With curries you can actually smell all the flavor. Food was also as tasteful and flavorful as it smelled. I feel prices are justified for the ambiance, service and food(quality & quantity) you are getting. The only thing we didn’t like was garlic naan, would rate garlic naan 2/5 ⭐️. Rest of the appetizers and main course was 4.75/5 ⭐️. Their Leek Koftas are must try. Will be be back soon.

Although I’m not a big fan of Indian cuisine, this restaurant is definitely worth a visit! The standout feature is the exceptional service – the staff is incredibly friendly, attentive, and goes above and beyond to make guests feel welcome. The atmosphere is warm and cozy, creating a truly inviting experience. The food is prepared quickly and with great quality, beautifully presented and appetizing. Even if you’re not particularly into Indian cuisine, this restaurant will leave you with only positive impressions.

Google
BEST OF THE BEST INDIAN RESTAURANT IN CHARLOTTE!!! Been coming here for over a decade and have never been let down. The food and service is always been amazing and authentic. They have a great bar with a variety of liquor and house cocktails with an Indian twist. My favorite cocktail is the Dak Bangla Mojito. My only complaint for the establishment overall is that it is a bit pricy, especially with the drinks but the whole restaurant is worth the price point, but I would definitely visit more frequently if it was a bit cheaper. I call Blue Taj the best Indian restaurant in Charlotte and in the South overall! I’m yet to be proven otherwise!

Google
Decent Indian eatry upscale ambiance and mid level price. Food tasted very good Dal Makhani had authentic punjabi flavors, taste and texture Shahi paneer was with grated paneer and had bell peppers, odd to be called Shahi Paneer but tasted good Leek kofta was nice, crispy on the out and soft in core. But the bread slice kind coat was obvious ( no complaints) gravy for kofta was very balanced and flavorful. Palak paneer was nice as well Garlic Naan were soft warm and baked to perfection Good place for friends, family and busineas dinners

Google
It's been quite a while since we visited The Blue Taj – at least five years – and it's still a great restaurant. The food was VERY tasty and the service was friendly and professional. Lots of vegetarian options. Our only issue (and the only reason we won't give it five stars) is how much more expensive it was from our last visit – MUCH more than we remember – even the veggie dishes. Still, if you have a taste for fine Indian food, it would be hard to find any better in Charlotte!

Yelp
Unexpected dinner but turned out to be so good ! Blue Taj I went to years ago and remember it being good. We sat inside as it was quite hot on the patio. Service was excellent and they are quite discreet in their checking in which was nice. Really nice decor and an elevated place for an Indian restaurant. Love you don't have to look for parking too! Food was really good but only wish is that when you tell them you want it really spicy that they make it really spicy. It was all very tasty but I could have used extra !! That's just me though. The rest of our group loved it all . Taj beer made its rounds on the table . I went with just water here. Although they have a bar and nice wine list. Appetizers we had The masala papad , nice crunchy and a kinda salad mix comes with it. The chili chicken was really good and tasty. Perfectly coated with spices. Mains we had the chicken tikka masala , great big chunks of chicken lots of good sauce. The vindaloo sauce we ordered on the side was really good too. The tandoor shrimp(jinga) was in a cream sauce, not my favorite but the shrimp were good Off the menu the salmon Achari was a table favorite. Made with cabbage and a great sauce of Indian pickle spices. Great flavor. Our friends knew to order this as it's not on the menu. The garlic naan was really good soft and fluffy. All that made for a great impromptu dinner for us. Highly recommend if you're looking for a nice place or even for a special occasion with good Indian ! Well run place .

Yelp
This place is so good, when you walk in you can't see the restaurant, they open the door and it is small but the atmosphere is amazing. Our waiter was funny, my husband makes jokes about spice, the waiter was very cordial. I got the braised lamb in the coconut curry sauce, the lamb was a little dry, my husband got the spicy Sitka chicken level three, it wasn't that spicy but the spice was so good. I recommend this place if you like Indian food.

Yelp
We've been on the hunt for our go-to Indian food spot in the Charlotte area and Blue Taj is a top contender! The owners are from Punjab so the flavors and technique are authentic. The Rogan Josh was delicious and the flavor was not too gamey. The Saag Paneer was absolutely delicious (one of my favorites) and the Chicken Tikka Masala was really tasty. We ordered medium spice level but it was pretty mild so we will definitely increase the spice level next time. You can handle it, I promise. An absolute must order is garlic naan because there's nothing better to soak up all that delicious gravy. The staff were really friendly and the location is central Ballantyne. We'll definitely be back!

Yelp
The nicest Indian restaurant in town, regarding ambiance. Food on the on the other hand, it's about average with local Indian Offerings you can get whereas the cost is inevitably a bit higher. For some, the ambiance is a prerequisite to their dining experience. For me personally, I want a bit more flavor and spice. I was tempted to try the duck leg, but $24 is a pretty premium for a single leg... OR I would opt in for an $18 platter at an Asian restaurant for half a duck

Yelp
My first dining experience here did not disappoint! Upon entering, I was pleasantly surprised to find such a beautiful atmosphere. It definitely feels upscale and would be perfect for a date night. I had dinner here with a girlfriend and our server was kind, patient and informative when it came to explaining the menu items and making suggestions. Everything we had from appetizer to main course to dessert was fantastic! I plan on returning again soon to try out some other items. It feels like a place where no matter what you order, you can't go wrong.

Yelp
Blue Taj Foods decorated as high end restaurant but dinning tables have so many scratches. They need to changed all tables or they should use table clothes. It looked ugly . Foods are very expensive and all my foods portion are very small. I found a hair in my foods. I took a picture and see attachment.

Yelp
As a vegan I was worried if I could find much but I did and the food was great. We ordered samosa, bhindi masala and tofu cashew cream curry with roti. Enough for 2 people. The staff was very nice and made us a lemon soda which wasn't on the menu but that's what I was craving for. We definitely recommend this to our vegan fellows and others.

Yelp
If you are MUSLIM please avoid this place. As soon as the front young girl saw my wife wearing hijab she welcomed us with rudeness , after 45 mins of waiting nobody took our order while other people who came after us were served. We finally decided to leave and the young girl at the front didnt care that we leaving and still had the nerve to say good night. Bad staff with bad attitude. Do better! I would give 0 stars if possible

Yelp
My daughter and I are in town for the night and decided to venture out and try some Indian food. We are very glad that we did. The blue Taj was absolutely amazing. Great ambiance, great service and the food was absolutely delicious. The chicken tikka masala ch was so tender it fell apart. Everything was amazing. The korma was especially creamy and delicious. Highly recommended will definitely be coming again.

Yelp
If you enjoy Indian food , you need to check out Blue Taj ! Everything we tried was absolutely delicious !! The service was also excellent . Blue Taj is definitely a keeper and will remain on my list of must visit during my trips to Charlotte ! Parking : we parked in the attached parking garage which was great because it was raining so it helped keep us dry .

Yelp
It was a pleasure dinning here, the food and service was great and the atmosphere although a little dark was nice.

Yelp
We had dinner here a couple of weeks ago, with one of our favorite couples, who consider this one of their favorite restaurants in Charlotte. After dining with them, we can totally understand why! The stand out at this restaurant was definitely the homemade nature of all of the dishes we ordered. From appetizers all the way through to my curry dish, everything seemed to be made in the house and from scratch. And while I am not an expert on Indian cooking, it doesn't take a culinary professional to spot quality food, and this is definitely a top-notch Indian restaurant. Service was also really good as we visited on a Friday night. However, our friends did make reservations, and I'm glad they did because it was clearly too packed to expect to be immediately seated as a walk up. As a bonus, we had drinks after dinner at the rooftop bar next-door, which made for a great date night. Definitely would recommend trying this place out if you're looking for a similar one two punch..

Yelp
Loved the Vegetable Samosa. The pastry shell wasn't too thick or hard like some can be and the filling is very flavorful. I ordered my Chicken Tikka Masala at a "level 2" which was medium spice. It got pretty spicy as I kept eating for those of you who aren't great with spice. The Masala-Chili Cauliflower has more of a tomato taste which was good but unexpected.

Yelp
This spot is delicious and very romantic, would be a great date night spot for a couple or a fancy dinner outing like for graduation or birthdays! I had the best chicken tikka masala that I have had in Charlotte, and the naan was impressive too. The atmosphere for dinner time is very dark and intimate, so if you are looking for more of a light and boisterous vibe then you may want to look elsewhere. The staff will definitely take care of your needs and the food does not disappoint!
google avatar

Aleeza L.

Yelp
The experience was very nice. The entrance is reminiscent of a high end restaurant. The atmosphere is dark and cozy feeling with red and gold color scheme. We came for a late lunch and missed any crowd so service was quick and helpful. I love when restaurants with spicy food leave bottles of water on the table. We ordered the vegetarian tastes platter, garlic naan, chai, paneer Tikka masala, and bhindi masala. The platter was all fried but deliciously spiced with a sweet and sour dip. The garlic naan was outstanding given the crispy outside and fluffy inside. The chai was ok, less of a full body mouth feel as others we've had before. Both of the entrees were fantastic. A 3 spicy level was perfect to feel the heat but not painful even after eating a ton. If you like spicy food, you would want to go higher. We've been struggling to find our new Indian food place on the south side of Charlotte but this may be it! Yes the prices are a little steeper than others I've been to but for the dine-in experience and quality of food, I think it is worth it. We have tried doordash for this restaurant and it wasnt as good as being in the restaurant.

Yelp
Came for dinner on a Friday night around 7pm. It wasn't packed and they were able to seat us right away with no reservation. We were not too familiar with Indian food so we had no clue what to order. Our waiter Emil came to our rescue! He suggested the Lamb Methi Khorma with level 3 spice and Lamb Saagwala. Both dishes came with white rice. We also ordered garlic naan. Let's just say Emil did not disappoint. The food was great. The Saagwala has a thicker consistency whereas the Khorma is more like a sauce. The service was great and the heated patio was the perfect temperature. I'll definitely be coming back again or ordering take out when in the area.

Yelp
This place is great. The food is fresh and made to order. The Indian spices are perfect and the service is on point. Love this place. Can't wait to go back

Yelp
I have been to Blue Taj a few times and the food is good but last night I decided I will not be returning again. To begin they gave us a table in the middle of the hallway where you can literally not walk around and you are so close to other tables it was absolutely a fire safety code violation. When we complained and asked for a different table they didn't care. I normally would have left but I am pregnant and was starving and we had a gift card. Next we ordered Lamb Rogan Josh, Lamb Curry and Chicken Tika masala. We ordered Garlic naan. The food is always good BUT it's very small portions like for two super hungry people you need 3 entrees. Not only do they charge for naan you only get like a few pieces so we ended up getting two orders. Also they only gave me enough rice for one entree. A lady dining alone ordering one entree got the same amount of rice as us lol. I would have complained but I already was having a bad experience and I knew they would charge me. For context we just had water so for 3 entrees and naan bread our bill was over $80. The service wasn't bad we ordered and got our food quickly but just the horrible fire safety violations table, the small portions, the expensive prices and the very small rice portion and the expensive naan bread I just won't be back. Especially during cold and flu and Covid winter season I was nervous being so close to all the other tables. I had to give it two stars because the food is good. Lastly, parking is hard to find and a bit stressful even at 6 PM on a Wednesday night.

Yelp
Good service, fair ambiance but unfortunately a rather expensive, small and dry duck leg was a disappointment. Spouses's Amritsari chicken dish also somewhat overcooked but delicious sauce saved it.
google avatar

Jamaica K.

Yelp
I went with friends and was kind of nervous, but tried the food anyway! I was so amazed at the meal! The service was great and the waiter explained his personal favorites. I wish I had taken a picture, but the food was too good. The ambience was great, some noise but was still able to have a convo without yelling! Definitely recommend!

Yelp
Finally, some decent Indian food in Charlotte!! I came here for lunch last week and ordered the chicken tikka masala lunch special. It came with a choice of soup or salad as an appetizer. I chose the coconut curry soup. It was DELICIOUS: packed full of flavor and curry goodness. The actual chicken tikka masala was also delicious! Unlike some other Charlotte Indian restaurants I've tried, the Blue Taj's curries do not taste watered down. They are bold, spicy though not necessarily hot-spicy, and have a nice consistency and texture. My meal also came with naan, which was fluffy and went well with my tikka masala sauce. I do wish they had given just a bit more food but it was the lunch portion after all. I will most definitely be back here, even though it's a bit of a hike to Ballantyne. Food: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Atmosphere: 5/5

Melissa S.

Yelp
Always consistent and delicious! Thanks to the wonderful staff for assisting us with our order every time we come in to visit since we are not familiar with some of the dishes offered.

Yelp
My first time having Indian food and it was amazing. Food was delicious. service was great, everyone was kind. Ambiance is great for date night, friends or family time. I can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Anya P.

Yelp
Probably the best Indian food around all their dishes are really good, but they do taste better when you dine in versus takeout, and the portions are bigger for dine too.
google avatar

Dave C.

Yelp
No Buffet. Decent food. Since the fandemic it's been really hard finding anyone who does Buffet anymore... Really sad.
google avatar

Jyoti S.

Yelp
This is a decent Indian eatery with beautiful ambience. They take reservation over phone but if you don't have reservation the wait is long especially over weekends. We had to wait for almost an hour to get a table and more than half an hour (almost 45 mins) to get our food. We ordered masala papad, Chicken tikka masala, goat curry, butter Paneer and few naans. The masala papad had too much of onions and the chicken in the gravy was a little chewy, the goat was also only decent. Naans here are the highlight for us, we liked them as they were hot and thin. The gravies was more on the sweet and non spicy side although we ordered a 7 out of 10. This place is little expensive but worth a visit if you are craving Indian.
google avatar

Toni S.

Yelp
Food was great! Everything tasted so good. Service was on point. We went for dinner so the Low lighting set the tone.

Courtney B.

Yelp
Blue Taj became a favorite after just one visit. The food is absolutely fantastic. Portions are generous, flavors are wonderful and the staff is lovely.
google avatar

Gina C.

Yelp
I thought everything was great! The food was good. We had appetizers, drinks, dinner and dessert. The spice level on dishes was drastically different. We had 5 people in our party. Two has a spice level of 2 and that was consistent. Two had a spice level of 3 and one had a spice level of 4. One of the 3s was much spicier than the 4. I wondered if there was a mixup. The only downside that I didn't enjoy is that it's quite dark in the restaurant. I have a hard time seeing in dim light and it made my experience not quite enjoyable.
google avatar

Santi A.

Yelp
Everything was delicious, the service was excellent, everyone was very amiable and there was a pleasant ambiance with very nice decor.
google avatar

Grayson D.

Yelp
I cannot describe how good this place is! the chatpate tikki chole and garlic naan = amazing.
google avatar

Danny T.

Yelp
GOODNESS GRACIOUS GOLLY. This is by far the greatest Indian food that you will ever come across hands down. I was having a lift session in the garage, my wife picks this food up to go cause you know we're living in this covid-19 full of bullshit pandemic. They need to let us free so I could pull up in this restaurant and take a seat, eat a damn shahi paneer. Compliments to the business, chef & the man that made this, God bless those hands. Make sure you get the garlic naan bread to food that bitch with the white rice and paneer. Will be returning soon. 1.

Yelp
It's been awhile since we have been back to Blue Taj, the last time we went was before Covid. We would go Sunday's for their buffet, which was incredible. Boy, do I miss that buffet. It definitely is not the same with out it, but still enjoyable. We had the Chicken Korma, Lamb Vindaloo, and vegetable Masala. Chicken Korma being the standout but could have been warmer. The Vindaloo was good but a little too salty for my taste. Naan was delish as always.

T Y.

Yelp
Really wonderful and tasty restaurant. Above board service-- I can't say enough about my waiter. He explained some dishes I was contemplating and ultimately I ordered what he recommended and it was fantastic. Very clean restaurant, excellent food that came out quickly, and even better service. Highly recommend.
google avatar

K T.

Yelp
Excellent food. You can share a dish since the portions are huge. Nice ambiance and good service.
google avatar

Alex S.

Yelp
Really great Indian food with lots of vegetarian options. We really like the veggie appetizers, the leek kofta, and the chicken tikka masala. I only wish they allowed you to order their lassi and desserts through delivery! The restaurant has a great vibe and cool cocktails as well.
google avatar

Liz S.

Yelp
Blown away! I am only dipping into Indian lately but this came highly recommended from a vegetarian foodie friend. We had a party of six with a reservation and were immediately sat. I loved the ambiance! Dim lighting and red printed on the wall. The service was impeccable. No water glass dipped below 75% full and silverware removed and replaced between appetizers and entrees. We got the cauliflower appetizer, vegetarian sampler and naan to share. I personally got the Kerala Style Seafood Curry- with basmati rice. Yes, I think there should be a side that comes with it at $21 but still throughly enjoyed. The seafood cooked perfectly though would have loved a touch more. The curry sauce what dreams are made of. The server did great in describing entrees in which we had questions and helped us select a heat index number. Lots of to go bags leaving the kitchen so also a popular pick up/delivery spot!

Yelp
The food was very good and I was pleasantly surprised at the ambiance and service. I would definitely recommend this spot. Great Indian food.

Yelp
The place is really good. Good food, friendly service and great lively location We requested Indian spicy and it was perfect

Yelp
We are plant based and have been here a few times. The Aloo Gobi is what we usually get. To be dairy free they have to leave off yogurt sauce. We get spicy at a number 4. The rice (that comes with it) is very good. We have eaten at Copper (their sister restaurant in Dilworth) and I thought the food was not as good and was more expensive. There is a parking deck right next to the restaurant. Service was ok. 1st time we were recommended this dish by our waiter. He did not say anything about the yogurt (hopefully he asked for it to be left off). But then we came back for takeout twice and did not know about the yogurt. Dined in the restaurant this last time and were informed of the yogurt after we told them we were plant based. I have gotten 3 margaritas (their special cocktail-cannot remember the name). Each one has been different...so, my rating is based on their food.
google avatar

Dylan K.

Yelp
Great hidden gem! I had all sorts of dishes and shared with the group I was with. Honestly, I usually don't like Indian food very much. However, this was a deliciousss choice. I even got their tea and chai tea and both were absolutely wonderful. Service was really attentive both from the host to the server.

Ranard B.

Yelp
Great food. Would really love if they're able to get their sanitation score up from the low 90s to 100. It would still about a confidence with the patrons.

Kelly B.

Yelp
Blue Taj is amazing! The service is great. The atmosphere is very nice, and the food is the best Indian I have ever had! I highly recommend for you to come here!

Yelp
I haven't been here in 3 years and this recent visit only solidified why. We were a group of 6. When we got there, no one even showed up to take our drink order for over 20 min. When they finally did, it was probably another 20 min before they came back to take our order. I had invited an Indian friend of mine to come, but she refused saying this place was too Americanized. I see what she is saying. I spent 3 weeks in India also, and this food isn't very good. In fact, my naan bread reminded me of pizza dough. It's supposed to be thick and fluffy, but it was thin and only somewhat thick on the edge... like a pizza. I got the chicken korma. It was just ok. I asked for level 4 out of 5 and it was very spicy. I love spicy, but it almost was too much for even me so know this when you order. I should have ordered level 3, but it was fine. The atmosphere reminds me of a warehouse that they tried to sparsely decorate. The seats were so close to other tables, that I had a hard time getting up from the table to leave. Per the norm, the waiter was no where in sight so I asked the lady cleaning tables for a box and the check. She came back with 5 boxes. Everyone got one but me. I had to find her and ask for a box again.

Yelp
The BEST Indian in Ballantyne!! The garlic Nan is delicious, and the Vindaloo Chicken and so GOOD!!
google avatar

Nina V.

Yelp
We had dinner for my birthday, last evening. There were 8 in our party. The food was outstanding. Very, very flavorful. Generous portions. The prices seemed fair for the portions and quality we received. We had several beers, wines and cocktails. All of them were quite delicious. The service was pretty slow. Our reservation was 7:30. We didn't get our check until 10 and we had to ask for it three times. There is an 18% tip added for parties (I don't recall if it was 6 or 8). We met the criteria for the addition. I don't feel we received $66 of service. But we had a wonderful time. There was no hoopla or well wishes for the birthday. However, the hostess did acknowledge the occasion as we left. Overall, I would recommend the restaurant for a smaller group, in order to ensure less than 2.5 hours in the business and to allow yourself the opportunity to tip 20%, or greater, depending on what is earned by the server.

Yelp
This was hands down the best Indian food I've ever had. From our appetizer to the entree to dessert it could not have been better. Service was good as well. I wish I could say more, but all I can say is TRY THIS PLACE!! I loved it.

Brittany F.

Yelp
This is some of the best Indian food I've ever had! The place is not visible from the street, so a tiny bit hard to find, but we made it! The experience was well worth it. The staff was extremely polite and attentive and our food was cooked perfectly. We finished all three plates. You definitely need to try this place out!
