The Best Fish and Chips on the Oregon Coast | Eater Portland

"In 2017, Cassie Hamilton pulled up her converted floating houseboat restaurant from Winchester Bay and moved the operation to nearby Coos Bay. Dry-docked on northbound Highway 101, the Boat attracts flocks of locals for fried oysters, hand-cut halibut and Alaskan cod, and a gloriously shrimptastic basket containing several kinds of prawns and popcorn shrimp served with a shrimp cocktail. Slaw, cottage cheese, or rice pilaf can be subbed for decent fries if preferred. Outdoor deck seating overlooks cool vintage trains and logging equipment in the Oregon Coast Historic Railway train yard next door, especially pretty while adorned with lights during the holidays." - Emily Teel

The atmosphere is casual and boat themed with a museum next door. There is indoor and outdoor seating. The waitress was very nice and quick. The clam chowder was great and the fried steak bites were tasty. I wish they were served with gravy 🤣 The coleslaw was perfect, not too wet. Overall a nice place to get fish and chips as well as some other items. There is something for everyone.

Google

Google
I'll start with the good but then continue to read so you can actually get a better feel for my review and hear the bad and negative side of things. The main good thing is the design of this place. It's very unique and you probably won't find another place like it. It's actually three different buildings on an elevated platform. One is the main kind of kitchen area with only three small tables on the inside. They then also have a larger outdoor seating area and in the back I think they have a bar area as well. That's it. That's the only good thing I have to say about this place. The rest is my actual review. Everything about this restaurant was very mediocre from the setup to the actual design and layout to the quality of food and sadly to the service. I can tell you right now this is a place that I would not recommend going to and if I'm in the area again, I will probably not revisit. Not because everything was terrible but just simply because the price to quality was not there for me and my family. While the food was decent, it was all, to be honest, very bland and highly overpriced. There were two adults and and two children under 2 years old, one of which is not even eating solids. For one simple chicken tender and a basket of fries. It was essentially $10. For the fish and chips it was $18. That's the standard price compared to most fish and chip places. But to be honest the fish here was completely plain. It literally tasted like nothing. It was just deep fried meat with no taste or flavor. My wife ordered a fish sandwich which she said she enjoyed; but again I'm not sure if that was because she was starving or because the fish sandwich was truly that good. Portions definitely do not seem to be adequate for the pricing. I ordered a five piece fish and chips basket and the pieces that I received were small, and like I said, had no taste, and really just broke apart as soon as I picked them up. To be honest that was very disappointed and in reality I would rather just go to a grocery store and buy some frozen fish pieces and some french fries and have heated it up in the oven. The service here was very mediocre. The staff I guess was friendly but to be honest not really that attentive either. They were understaffed and overworked. Our server did seem friendly but they only came and checked on is once and didn't even offer me a refill on my strawberry lemonade that says that it comes with a refill. Like I said, the price to quality ratio was not really here at this restaurant and I will not be returning again. But maybe I had a one off situation and this place really is great, I hope that's the case as I don't want to see a good place suffer.

The staff was very friendly and attentive even though it was busy. Food was good and plentiful. Seating is mostly outside under cover on picnic tables.

Google
We ordered the chicken strips e. coleslaw and the cod fish with rice pilaf and were both so happy with our choices. The breading is light and fresh and not greasy. All the sauces they bring to the table are great. And the waitresses were all dancing and in a happy mood. We were able to park our RV outside while we had a lunch break during our travels to Florence. Loved it!

Google
Great experience and service. The food is hot and fresh right to your table. I will definitely be stopping by here again every time I pass through.

Google
Great fish and chips and really well made chowder. Service was outstanding for this small little local treasure. I likely haven’t eaten at every fish & chip joints in Coos Bay but this restaurant has to be the top that I ate! They offer other options but the breading on the fish was exceptional!

Two hungry guys from New Mexico craving fresh fish. The Boat was recommended by our hotel host, and it was within walking distance! Cold beer and great food served by Sara: her beautiful smile added to a delightful experience. Get the Cod Combo plate... Ivan

Yelp
Very good but the menu is mostly fried food...everyone in our group likes it! We will probably go back again...

Yelp
Don't waste your money, if you're really having a craving for fish go across the street and order the fish sandwich from McDonald's. Food is overpriced, and the atmosphere is subpar. I've never seen such a small piece of halibut. The best part of my meal was the coleslaw. That's not a good sign.

Dan G.

Yelp
Go here every time I am in North Bend food and service is always great I always get the clam chowder

Yelp
This place is Great!! The food was excellent & the service from Darla was outstanding! My family & I will definitely be back!! Highly recommend The Boat Fish & Chips

Yelp
My husband absolutely loves this place. I don't like fish however and haven't found anything that I have like to eat here after several trips. If you're looking for great fish and chips though my husband says they are the best!

Yelp
This lunch was exactly what I was craving on our road trip hot cup Of chowder and fresh shrimp salad they have good ranch so that made me happy also ;) the halibut sandwich was crispy not greasy and totally fluffy . The service was great the ladies were very nice and on top of making sure we had what we needed (thank you ) the decor so Much fun , I wish we had a place like this in Eugene . We will definitely go back when we are passing through coos bay .

Yelp
Tammy was an excellent waitress. Order the calamari- hand cut and breaded perfection.

Yelp
Cute little spot. The staff is friendly. The fish tasted fresh , chips good too. Fresh oil. I got the halibut! It was yummy. I'll be back

Yelp
normally wouldn't write a review however, after standing there for 10 minutes to put in a Togo order and the cashier/server telling me it would just be one more minute, I left. I was patient until she needed to split tips with the other server, put things back in the cooler and chat with the cooks. apparently taking my order was not a priority. only a few customers in the building.
google avatar

Roger D.

Yelp
Quaint, casual and relaxed. Super friendly service, always friendly even when busy. I have had many items on the menu and they are all good. Homemade cocktail sauce is yummy. Oysters are delicious. I love the tater tots. Smaller portions available for smaller appetites. 5 stars because it is a great local fish and chips place with lots of other options.

Fly G.

Yelp
This place isn't too bad, I love how the waiters are incredibly nice, they also give good recommendations for what to eat. I ordered the prawns which was really good, a little small, but really good in fact all the food was good according to the satisfaction of other costumers, the only thing that wasn't very good was the bathrooms, they were slightly disgusting and I noticed people who went into the opposite gender bathroom because one bathroom had a flushing toilet while the other had soap, and there were just a few problems with that, but overall it was a great place to eat, I would recommend eating there.

Yelp
The food was fantastic, the service was top notch, and the ambiance was Oregon Coast authentic! We travel in our RV six months of the year and this restaurant was one of our favorites. Our server made the dining experience out-of-this-world fun, just by being herself. The owner stopped to visit when I was outside taking pictures and was happy to share the history of the restaurant. If we lived in the area we would be regulars!

Yelp
Chose this spot due to being dog friendly. The yelp reviews had me a little worried but our experience was great! For the first 20-30 min we were there, there was only one guy working the floor and register. He was covering the main dining room, the side room, and the outdoor patio where we were sitting - at least 8 tables in between the three. Considering how much he was taking care of, he was doing an awesome job. Mozzarella sticks came out pretty quickly and were devoured by our ravenous crew. They were ok - just kind of generic mozz sticks. In two of the five sticks, the cheese had leaked out during the frying process, leaving a hollow shell of breadcrumbs. The rest of the food came out soon after and we dove in. Everyone was really happy with what they ordered. My son and I split two 1/2 and 1/2 platters, opting for Calamari (interesting thick pieces), popcorn shrimp (ok), scallops (pretty tasty, although fried scallops will always be inferior to sautéed in my opinion), and clam strips (the real winner with my son. I love their flavor, I just wish there had been bigger pieces or just more). My wife opted for the 3 pc Pacific Cod and chips from the Minnow menu. She said it was the perfect portion for a light lunch. My vegetarian daughter ordered the grilled cheese and we were all impressed by the cook on the sandwich - see my pic - perfect golden brown from crust to crust. I almost forgot to mention the house-made cocktail and tartar sauces. Both were really good. Cocktail could probably have more horseradish, but good for a general audience. Prices were alright, considering we're in a touristy spot. 4 meals, and appetizer, four soft drinks , and a good tip ran us ~$100. Overall, the service was great and the food pretty tasty. I would absolutely go back again.

Yelp
Great coast food...Clam Chowder Bread bowl is amazing...Jalapeño poppersare great. Family Friendly....Great Customer Service Kid Friendly

Yelp
i wanted you to eat here today, but as a pulled into the parking lot, which was completely empty, employees were on back dock and one was watching that I was not going to park with a trailer. Sogns clearly state no trailer parking. The very noticeable eye detoured me from stopping there to eat So on to another local restaurant

C B.

Yelp
Passing through Coos Bay and decided to stop here. It's conveniently located (which is how I found it), and the staff were great. I had the small order of the halibut and coleslaw. I loved that option because I didn't need much and am not particularly fond of fries. Halibut was crunchy and tasty even without sauce, and their tartar sauce was really good. Their coleslaw was unlike any I've had and I loved it. And they bring a gummy worm with the check. So...there you go. I'd come here again and bring friends.

Courtney L.

Yelp
We tried fish and chips, clams and shrimp salad. The breaded fish was out of this world! The fish was covered in a light flaky seasoned breading- not too heavy. Service was A+- servers very friendly and efficient. Highly reccomend, very family friendly. We will be back!

Teresa Mark H.

Yelp
Great service. Loved the cod fish and chips, great flavor on the coating. They have outdoor seating with heaters, perfect place to stop for lunch.
google avatar

Karlene D.

Yelp
Great place for seafood! We ate in the covered patio & with the heaters on, it was perfect! Our waitress was friendly, super sweet & helpful, while the everything about the restaurant & bathrooms were clean & taken care of. Our order consisted of Halibut & coconut shrimp combo with good coleslaw, cod tacos & fish sandwich. Everyone was happy with their choices, including the varied beer selections. If there was only one thing to pick at, I thought the $28 price tag for the Halibut/coconut shrimp combo was a bit steep. The high price tag was due to the Halibut, which was market value, so maybe ask what the price is first before ordering. We will be back.

Cortney M.

Yelp
Best fish tacos ever and the tartar sauce is superior! Ive never been unsatisfied with the food or service.
google avatar

Yelp
This small restaurant makes an amazing Halibut and clam chowder. Personally the fries were good, not the best but I would get the Halibut & chips again. Also tried the calamari steak which was delicious. They also make an amazing tartar sauce and cocktail sauce. Staff are super kind. Would visit here again for fish and chips.

Debbie M.

Yelp
So we decided to go The Boat yesterday as the weather was so nice. So we chose half and half, I chose the cod and scallops, omgollie were they small and I do believe they were frozen, did not like the coating, the cod (3) were so small and I asked to have it to be deep fried, thinking it would be like tempura or beer battered, and the nice waitress said oh everyone likes our coating!! My husband got the half and half, cod and calamari, he was very disappointed as well. We have been there many times and this visit was the most expensive and the portion seemed smaller. I did not complain to the sweet waitress, it is not her fault, so I don't know if we will be back. It was just us and another couple eating outside.
google avatar

P L.

Yelp
Ordered the small halibut and fries. The halibut was cooked perfectly and was very tender with a lightly crisp batter. The staff constantly checked on us and were very friendly. Cute location with a nice outdoor area. Highly recommend this restaurant.
google avatar

Lynn B.

Yelp
One of my favorite places. We've stopped here several times while visiting the area. My favorite is the Cod Sandwich
google avatar

Andrew R.

Yelp
Sara is an absolute rockstar here!!! We got some great seafood and fantastic service. Thanks for a great meal after a long day on the coast!

Pnw Reviewer T.

Yelp
Our family from out of town wanted seafood and since we've never been here we all wanted to try it out. Two of us had halibut tacos, three of us had the bread bowl clam chowder, one had the captain's platter. Everything was amazing, fish was fresh. The cocktail sauce was fire. Waitress was amazing. Outdoor seating was great with heaters! Highly recommend!! We will be coming back. Oh and the waitress give us a punch card! Ty
google avatar

Joseph F.

Yelp
I'm from out of town. When I arrived, they were slow and just waiting for a customer. Staff were awesome, super friendly and informative. I got the fish and fries, which was above standard. The Cod was lightly battered and the chowder was very good
google avatar

Malaika S.

Yelp
Nice little place along downtown strip with awesome trains to view behind the restaurant. Indoor and outdoor dining. Friendly staff, quick service, good food.
google avatar

Glen E.

Yelp
best place ever - been coming for years, great service and food. If you have the opportunity to be waited on by Darla, she is a hoot and great server!
google avatar

Brian W.

Yelp
The food was so tasty (esp. the chowder bowl, cod, and fries) and super quick. Ambience was nice (we enjoyed the outdoor seating though the road is the backdrop). Service was super lovely and we enjoyed the surprise with the tip:)

Yelp
The Boat is a cute little restaurant with seating areas inside the "boat" itself, and on the covered patio. Seating inside is pretty sparse, but I found the patio to be comfortable even in the chilly evening as I was wearing my jacket. Larger parties may need to sit outside regardless of preference, since the interior of the restaurant is pretty narrow. And now for the food! My oyster sandwich was absolutely fantastic, but let me tell you what the real winner of that night's dinner was - the coleslaw! Hands down, the best coleslaw I've ever had in my life, and thank goodness it came in a large portion. I also ordered a strawberry lemonade, which nicely came with one refill. The clam chowder was also delicious. At the time of my visit, The Boat was a little short-staffed, but the waitresses were working HARD to make sure guests were properly attended to. We were willing to wait the few extra minutes for our food and it was SO worth it - already looking forward to our next visit to Coos Bay so I can get into that coleslaw again!

Cruz B.

Yelp
The deep-fried, lightly breaded prawns were soooo tasty & moist, & the fries were great, also. I had the senior serving, just 4 prawns, but I will definitely get the regular size basket next time! My husband enjoyed the halibut fish & chips, also. The service was good, but the views were not as expected. When The Boat was in Winchester Bay, you could see the marina & boats. There is NO waterview anywhere from this Boat that we could find. Outdoor dining was great, but we miss the water views. I will still give it 5 stars for the food.

Angela C.

Yelp
Food was very good. Clam chowder had many clams and was very tasty. Service was amazing. The fish and chips were good and came with some of the best fries I've ever had. The ambience was very nice. The restaurant had many places to sit. You should check out.
google avatar

John W.

Yelp
$8.95 for a bowl of clam chowder with almost ZERO clams. Should be called potato soup. The Halibut fish and chips however were amazing!

Mary D.

Yelp
don't do it. I live on the coast and have always had wonderful fish....except this time. It was a Monday so not many places were open and we were hungry and have a dog. sitting outside was great but food, not so much.
google avatar

Sherry D.

Yelp
Some of the freshest fish I have had absolutely fantastic and side note they have beer and keno how the hell can you go wrong ding dong
google avatar

Richard D.

Yelp
Fish was bland and skinny I ordered the fish and chowder and hit home with just fish I called onto then and they said they would fix their mistake! Well when came into to get my food that they basically stole from me and the.yiung red headed idiot waiter said if it's not well-written your not getting any or he would have to pay for.it, well he should flipping should pay for it, for bring stupid!! I'm still yet to try their chatter after two times and obviously it's not very good one star don't recommend it all.
google avatar

Kyle V.

Yelp
The front desk of our hotel suggested we stop here for some local seafood. We didn't have high expectations but were both surprisingly impressed. The staff was doing their best even though they only had 2 servers. The food was ready in a reasonable amount of time and the portions were beyond fair. I ordered the fish and chips and the fish was great. I also liked the thin and crispy fries as well. My copilot had the oyster sandwich and loved it. His side of coleslaw was a giant bowl that we ended up splitting and it was really good. The "outdoor" seating is covered and has plexiglass blocking the wind but it's still better than sitting inside. The 2 gummy worms that come with the check was a little weird and we avoided them. Overall, not a bad spot for reasonably priced seafood.
google avatar

Jodi L.

Yelp
What a quirky fun place! The fish and chips was on point not overly battered and not cornmeal crust, seasoned just right and very tender flaky moist fish. The coleslaw was delicious but I personally would pass on the clam chowder. We also ordered the burger which was medium rare and a good standard burger. There are three different seating areas two of which are indoors and the other which is fresher air but covered. The wait staff was nice and parking was easy. Great casual place to grab lunch or dinner.
google avatar

Yelp
Really cool little spot in Coos Bay with nice ocean ambience even though it's not right on the ocean. I would say this is more of a tourist fish haus then something the locals go to. It's fast, fresh and quick. Some good beers on tap, just basic wine offerings. Chowder was okay, not something I would come back for though. The fried fish, shrimp, clams, oysters and scallops were all good. Different batters and breading which made it interesting. The fries were fresh cut but not crispy at all. Service was excellent. I think Nicole was our server and she was super on top of it and really sweet. You can bring animals here because there is mostly outside covered seating. Prices were good. I would come here again for a quick bite.
google avatar

Constantine J.

Yelp
Making our way backup the coast were craving some good seafood eats this was a recommended spot so we had to check it out. It is a cool atmosphere with boat like indoor dining. They had a few indoor eating tables along with a outdoor patio with plenty of seating available. We tried the halibut sandwich, cod fish tacos and calamari fries. They did not disappoint. Flavours were bold and the fish was nice and fresh. I can see why it comes highly recommend. Service was good and they brought over gummies with the check. A nice lil treat. I would make a stop here in Coos Bay again!!

Yelp
Ah man - I REALLY wanted to like this place. We have seen this spot since we moved here last year and never made it to try it until today. I ordered the 1/2 and 1/2 halibut and calamari with pilaf and my husband ordered the same but asked for the halibut and calamari to be grilled and ordered cottage cheese as his side. The waitress said sure but came back telling us the cook didn't want to grill the calamari because it would be rubbery. When we got our plates - we were saddened to see 3 TINY pieces of halibut. The fried halibut was tasty (but on the greasy side), but somehow the grilled halibut was a bit rubbery. And ironically, even though the calamari was fried - it was still rubbery. They do give you a HUGE bowl of pilaf though....and it's okay. The kicker for us was when my husband found what looked like 2 small hairs in his cottage cheese. From like, when a man shaves his beard. You know those super short, cut hairs? I'm not sure if that's what it was - but regardless it ruined his appetite. Not to mention that they charged $27 per plate for those tiny portions. That's $70 I'm never getting back - it came to that with (1) soda and an appetizer of mozzarella sticks and tip. Our waitress was super nice, though, and gave us excellent service - she was a doll. The outdoor seating is really nice, too. But the food is definitely overpriced and lackluster. :(

Yelp
The family took a little vacation and stayed in Rogue river, OR but had to get our feet in the sand... we drove west ... landed in coos bay... we were hungry so stopped at The Boat Fish and Chips.. the waitress which was helping us was very polite and funny... easy to approach for assistance... my wife had Halibut and coconut shrimp with a cup of clam chowder... I had the same accept with butterfly shrimp.. very good! The clam chowder was good to I was getting some nice clam chunks as well as potatoes... the daughter had a hamburger which she said was very good also... there is indoor seating but we sat outside.. nice easy breeze running thru very relaxing... food came quick and it was delicious... I like this place..
google avatar

Shelly B.

Yelp
It was quite disappointing to have such awful fish and chips staring right at the water! We got halibut fish and chips with rice pilaf and please see the photo to see how totally tiny these were and it as $19.99!!! We had to order a second entree to try and not be starving, but sadly both fish were soggy and undercooked as were the fries with the second platter. I opted for a chicken salad and got white and brown iceberg lettuce and a stomach ache. The staff were kind and working hard, but didn't seem concerned that we didn't eat our food and it was picked apart (especially the soggy fish in search of the edible parts). They were short staffed and we didn't want to take their time, so we paid and went on our own way. Definitely the least favorite food experience on this road trip.

Yelp
I live in this area and this restaurant used to be an actual floating restaurant in Winchester Bay. They moved a couple years ago, and I finally stopped in to check them out. We had fish and chips (cod), fries, tots, and rice pilaf. Both my daughter and I rated the fish as pretty good, but not great. Somehow it just didn't have that extra zing that takes the fish from good to great. It was slightly dry, perhaps just a bit over-cooked and the batter seems a little bland. I usually go to the Bandon Fish Market restaurant in Bandon but just didn't want to drive that far this time. We also thought the quantity of fish for the price was a little low. I ordered a 5 piece and my adult daughter got a 3 piece. We split them so each ended up with 4 pieces. My daughter was satisfied, but I was still a bit hungry. When I go to the Bandon restaurant, I'm always very full, so I think they're a bit small with their portion sizes here. Likewise, the little container of Tatar sauce didn't make it all the way to the end. The fries and tater tots were both crispy and good, as was the rice pilaf. They have a covered outdoor dining section that allows pets, along with indoor dining. No bay views, but they are next to the train museum area. They have no vegetarian options other than some appetizer type stuff like a small salad or coleslaw. They do have a menu for the "lighter appetite." Overall, it was pretty good fish, but not the best. The service was friendly and fast, and they have a lot of other fish-type menu items if you want shrimp, clam chowder, etc. If you're heading south, I'd check out the little place on the Bandon bay front mentioned above. As a local alternative, you can try the Fisherman's Seafood Market just north of here. Hope you're enjoying your coast trip!

Yelp
Best fish and chips that we've had driving up the west coast from California! Super friendly staff. Cute little "boat" for the restaurant. Awesome!

Dawn P.

Yelp
The food was awesome service was excellent. I had the coconut shrimp. My husband had the Cod and coleslaw. We had the starter of clam chowder and it was really good. We would recommend and we will definitely be back to eat here again when we're in town. I like that.

Jessica G.

Yelp
Best fish and chips! My husband and I like to get the fish and oyster combo fish and chips. The breading is light and flavorful. The food comes out fast and servers are always friendly. I crave this place and try to visit every summer. Highly recommend!

Yelp
We had high hopes for this place. Unfortunately for us the only thing that was good was the service. Our "cheese bread" was disgusting. None of the 4 of us could wolf it all Down. The clam chowder was less than average. Fish sandwich was below average. The shrimp Platter was average and was not far from what we were expecting. Maybe it was an off day since it was Memorial Day I don't know but they got our money once but never again!
