"Tom and Michaela Kitchin have created their version of a pub in an old coaching inn dating from 1836. The bar serves pub classics, the dining room offers dishes with a 'nature to plate' philosophy and, in the garden, dishes are cooked on a Big Green Egg. Super comfy bedrooms showcase Scottish designers." - Michelin Inspector

A 5-Day Road Trip Connecting Scotland’s Tidal Pools

"There’s plenty of boutique accommodation in East Lothian, but none are as stylish as The Bonnie Badger with shaggy Shetland sheepskin slung over armchairs for that Scandi-meets-Scottish coziness."

Drink, Eat and Stay at The Bonnie Badger

"The Bonnie Badger is a historic coaching inn on the old London-to-Edinburgh road. It was formerly known as the Golf Inn and was owned for many years by the local Corbett Family (of Ronnie Corbett fame). We wanted to bring to life our vision of what a pub should be—a place that the locals can call their own; somewhere that serves good food and also offers stylish rooms for an overnight stop or a longer stay." - The MICHELIN Guide Nordic Editorial Team

The Bonnie Badger (Gullane, UK) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"A half-hour to the east of Edinburgh, in the coastal village of Gullane, the Bonnie Badger bills itself as a pub, restaurant, and rooms — and while that’s an accurate enough description, it rather undersells the quality of the experience. The rooms, first of all, are handsome and unpretentiously luxurious, filled with made-in-Scotland details. The Broc Bar is a pub bar that’s just elevated enough, and the Stables restaurant turns classic pub fare into something much more artistic." - Tablet Hotels

Lovely hotel, with charming service and excellent food. We were there for four nights, for my daughter’s wedding, since she was having her reception there. We had a deluxe room in the cottages. |Our room had a very comfortable bed, and we slept very well. My only quibbles would be that the shower is very small for a large man, and there is minimal clothes hanging space. Other than that, our stay was perfect. Staff are very friendly and service is impeccable.|Food throughout was excellent. They clearly have superb suppliers, and the standard of cooking is extremely high, as you would expect of a Tom Kitchin establishment. Breakfast was fantastic every day, and the bacon was superb. The roe deer for the wedding reception was the best venison I have ever tasted, haggis was perfectly cooked, and all the sauces were exquisite. We will return.

Went for the garden restaurant on a sunny day. Met a waiter on entry. Asked if serving food, if I may sit in the garden, and for the menus. Waiter didn’t know what to do. Found a seat in the garden. The Garden is squalid and not a garden. Waiter brought me two menus after quite some time. Knew there were 3 menus. Ordered the Highland wagyu burger. Bun was stale and broke up in my hands. Raisins dropped out covered in a slime like chutney when I picked it up to eat it. Patty was disproportionately small and too small for a hearty burger. Big slice of tomato. Tomato was not high quality. The patty was overcooked and not high quality. Served with ‘Koffman’ fries. I’ve seen a video of Koffman making fries. These were not Koffman fries. Small and dry. Didn’t feel good after eating. Walked through the ‘pub’ which doesn’t look like a traditional pub - colourful couches which appeared to be cushioned with the mass manufactured foam sold commercially.

We stayed here just after new year and had a fantastic stay, couldn't recommend it enough. It's easy to get to by bus from Edinburgh and it's close to the beach for walks. The decor is perfect, the rooms comfortable and the service was faultless. Lots of extra special touches like a bedtime pillow spray and paper delivered in the morning! The games room with pool table was great. We had dinner and breakfast and all the food was superb. Would love to come back!

Everything you could want from a hotel/ restaurant. Lovely, friendly, helpful staff. Rooms were excellent - small but perfectly formed. Bathroom was immaculate with a wonderful shower and heated floor. Bedding, towels all beautiful and the homemade salted chocolate chip cookies were sooo good.||||We ate in the Stables restaurant one night and the food was top notch with excellent attentive service again. Breakfast both mornings absolutely delicious - we had full Scottish one morning but you also got fresh fruit salad and yoghurt with fruit compote. You can tell they use the best local ingredients in everything they serve.||||Even the plates, dishes and mugs are ceramics by a small Scottish business. And a great music playlist in the bar, restaurant, garden room. Extra little touches which just added to the cost, welcoming vibe.||||We loved every minute of our 2 night stay and were sad to go, even with a compliment gift bag of water and homemade flapjacks. Fantastic value for money - we’ll be back!

Can only comment on the restaurant and pub, as we are local to Edinburgh so no need to stay overnight. Menu was slightly disappointing for a Friday night, but what was brought out was delicious and well presented. Not quite Kitchen standards but certainly better than your above average pub. Then again the price point is certainly higher than your above average pub, too. Good options on the drinks, and above-average service and attention to detail. The venue itself is stunning, too, of course. Probably not in a rush to get back, but would think about popping into the pub garden on a nice day.

We visited on a weekend trip to Edinburgh, as I'd purchased a package from a charity event. The Bonnie Badger is in a superb location and we were greeted with a very warm welcome and made to feel very comfortable. The room was in one of the lodges through the garden and was very good (although the TV didn't really work and we only had 2 channels). Facilities in the room were very good apart from this. We had champagne and canapes as part of our package, so decided to nip to the bar for these. We couldn't get a seat so sat in the Garden Room. We asked for some tap water and if we could have our champagne and canapes. Fifteen minutes later we still hadn't even had our drinks. The lady who checked us in noticed and very quickly had things brought to us and was very apologetic. We once again had a pre-dinner drink in the package and headed to the bar before dinner. There was a seat this time and the very kind waitress turned the boxing off (which was on very loud) when we sat down. I asked for a spicy margarita and my husband a Tom Collins. My margarita arrived and unfortunately was a standard one. Still very nice though. We went through to dinner and had a lovely seat by the fire. The waitress brought over menus and we ordered our food & wine. The starters arrived before the glasses of wine, which we had to chase again. The waitress looked absolutely rushed off her feet trying to serve most of the tables. The food was delicious (quite rich) but I would say that the service really needed some improvement (just more staff). We did ask for the turn down service and this was fantastic! Gorgeous seabuckthorn tea and cookie each. Overall I would 100% stay again but I just think there were some finer details in the bar & restaurant that needed improving. Oh and breakfast was superb!

A place that gets it right. The monkfish wrapped in pancetta? Perfect. Fresh, delicate fish meets high-quality meat—simple, precise, no unnecessary frills. The space, inside and out, feels like a warm hug, the kind of place you want to linger. If only it were summer—I’d be parked by the Green Egg barbecues with a drink in hand. My main? Spot on. But what really impressed me was the set menu my wife ordered—flavor-packed, well-executed, and priced like someone actually wants you to enjoy good food without breaking the bank. Solid.

Had a bit of a poor experience at lunchtime in the Broc bar. The food took more than an hour. We had 2 fish pies, taste wise they were fairly good, but they had literally come straight out the oven in a dish and on to the table. It just makes it a bit odd when you can’t eat for 15-20 minutes and spend the time burning your mouth, while other food goes cold. The meal would have been 100x better if it had just been allowed to stand for 10 minutes. The staff weren’t really interested in our table, and we had to pay at the bar to leave.
