The Bonnie Badger

"Tom and Michaela Kitchin have created their version of a pub in an old coaching inn dating from 1836. The bar serves pub classics, the dining room offers dishes with a 'nature to plate' philosophy and, in the garden, dishes are cooked on a Big Green Egg. Super comfy bedrooms showcase Scottish designers." - Michelin Inspector

A 5-Day Road Trip Connecting Scotland’s Tidal Pools

"There’s plenty of boutique accommodation in East Lothian, but none are as stylish as The Bonnie Badger with shaggy Shetland sheepskin slung over armchairs for that Scandi-meets-Scottish coziness."

Drink, Eat and Stay at The Bonnie Badger

"The Bonnie Badger is a historic coaching inn on the old London-to-Edinburgh road. It was formerly known as the Golf Inn and was owned for many years by the local Corbett Family (of Ronnie Corbett fame). We wanted to bring to life our vision of what a pub should be—a place that the locals can call their own; somewhere that serves good food and also offers stylish rooms for an overnight stop or a longer stay." - The MICHELIN Guide Nordic Editorial Team

We stayed here just after new year and had a fantastic stay, couldn't recommend it enough. It's easy to get to by bus from Edinburgh and it's close to the beach for walks. The decor is perfect, the rooms comfortable and the service was faultless. Lots of extra special touches like a bedtime pillow spray and paper delivered in the morning! The games room with pool table was great. We had dinner and breakfast and all the food was superb. Would love to come back!

We stayed a night and had dinner and breakfast. Good things - the building has been done up very nicely; the staff in the restaurant were great; the food was decent - both dinner and breakfast were cooked and presented to a good standard; the room was tastefully designed and the bed was really comfortable. Negatives unfortunately take the edge off things: underlying albeit relatively quiet but audible bass from music in the kitchen or bar area until 11pm and then again from 7am. A compressor for an AC or refrigeration unit was sited right outside the bedroom window which kicked in every 10 minutes or so. You could kind of overlook all this (it's billed as a "Pub restaurant with rooms") but we had a gift voucher for a 'package' deal which is actually exorbitantly expensive - the room worked out at £300 which is ridiculous for what was offered. Reception staff seemed under-trained. When we booked there was great confusion. The lady seemed to think we were buying rather than using a voucher. She was able to sell vouchers but didn't know how we could use them. Slightly similar mild confusion on check-in, and again during check-out about how we might keep any remaining balance on the voucher. The staff were very pleasant at all times, but when you're being charged £300 for a room you kind of expect perfection at all levels.

Stopped for impromptu Saturday lunch. First time here and delighted with everything on offer. Calm and relaxed atmosphere. Lots of attentive staff who were friendly and seemed to have good camaraderie between themselves. Special mention for the tarts and desserts. Most excellent pastry chef, Hamish McCrae, who came out to greet us when we asked about the tarts… Such a wonderful surprise and such excellent food. We spent a joyous couple of hours over lunch.

Food was great, service efficient and the atmosphere was good.|The food was delicious. I had the French onion soup which had good depth of flavour and sweetness. The grilled prawns were gorgeous, I loved the addition of the sourdough that mopped up the flavour of the prawns. My husband had the haggis bon bon and the Wagyu burger again all very good. The wine list is excellent.|We ate in the bar which was around 75% full on a week day lunch time so it had a good vibe.|Would definitely go back and recommend.

Absolutely loved it. ||We spent the night at the Bonnie badger and from the moment we walked through the door the whole experience was fantastic. All the staff working there are great from the warm welcome when checking in to the attentive staff in the restaurant. Nothing was ever too much trouble. Made to feel very welcome ||The food was exceptional not only in the evening but the following morning at breakfast. Honestly can’t recommend it highly enough and I can’t wait to go back

Food, ambience and service all 5 star. Stayed one night in a deluxe room. Very comfortable with lots of little extra touches which made the experience even more special. Dinner in the Broc Bar was excellent as was breakfast the next morning. Will definitely be back.

Loved everything about the Bonnie Badger. Have stayed at many wonderful hotels in Scotland and it’s one of my favorites. Hotels are very expensive in Scotland and I think we’ve become a bit numb as to the prices, but, compared to comparably priced hotels from Dornoch to Glen Coe to Aberdeen to Fife, the Bonnie Badger is top notch. Loved the comfort of the bed, the shower, the delicious food, and especially the staff. Also much prefer it to the other top rated hotel in lovely Gullane. Will definitely be back!

Did not stay here but had lunch in Brocs Bar. Michelin rated food, was good but a mite expensive. Had the steak pie on its own. Comes with no sides but is very tasty and filling. Couldn't have eaten it all if I'd had potatoes or veg. Will be back hopefully.
