The Book House in Dinkytown

I went to the Book House today during my lunch break and had an awesome time! The selection of books is incredible, prices are more than fair, and the employees are very welcoming. I can't wait to go back when I have more time to spend browsing.

Easily my favorite used bookstore in the Twin Cities. I can't even begin to tell you how many unique/rare titles I've been able to find here that were not available at other bookstores. The staff are very cool and helpful and they offer super reasonable and fair prices for buying books. The space is OVERFLOWING with character. I cannot recommend this bookstore highly enough, do yourself a favor and go check it out (and then check it out again, and again, and again).

All the best traits of a secret discoverable gem bookstore with many COOL and DIFFERENT titles from historical accounts and classical texts, rare editions and occult/psychedelic materials from a range of authors and perspectives. Don't go here if you have a lot of books to read in your collection currently because you will leave this store with more to read.

This is a marvelous used bookstore with a wide selection in all areas. I was looking at literature and children's literature and was very pleased and walked out with a few books I had been looking for. Book House has a very nice staff and it's also very easy to park and visit in Dinkytown.

Any used bookstore near a university is bound to be worth a couple hours of browsing and the Book House is no exception. It's got good prices and an impressive variety, lots of scholarly books. I love the atmosphere here, and the restaurant downstairs is pretty good too.

I visit a lot of used bookstores, and this place has one of the most excellent History sections I've seen (even a substantial selection of books on Historiography). Probably has a lot to do with being adjacent to the University campus. Also tons of fiction books, novels, foreign language, new releases, pulp paperbacks, and local fare. The employee working at the time was friendly and approachable. And best of all-- Book House smells like a used bookstore is supposed to smell! Like dust jackets and memories. Gonna make it a fixture of my next visits to Minneapolis.

Ordered one used book, Java a Garden Continuum, 1974, which came in outstanding condition. The packing was the best I have ever seen for a book. If you want an old book, try the Book House.

Located upstairs above the Chinese Food restaurant this place is cozy and stocked full of books for your perusal. I parked out back and walked around. This was my last stop on my bookstore tour for my travels and I was able to find 2 #youngadult books with strong African-American females as the protagonist. I grabbed a few bookmarks (as I like to place them in my #bookfairy drops) and called it a day. Service was enthusiastic about my visit, which is always a nice surprise. Respectfully Reviewed

We recently ordered a book (I believe through another service, but I'm not sure which one) and The Book House In Dinkytown people packed it for shipping INSANELY well. That book was CHERISHED before it arrived and was protected so well I don't think the legendary Samsonite gorillas would have made a dent in the multiple layers of mainly recyclable packaging. I can't say enough about how happy I am with the service. Next time I'm in Mpls I will be going up here to express my appreciation in person. Yay! Oh and the book is really good, too, but I'm kind of afraid to read it now because it's currently in perfect condition ... ! ;)

I love everything about this place. Great, knowledgeable employees, an amazing selection of books and the record section is small but mighty. I hand to fight to keep myself from going there on my days off to keep from spending money. Hooray!

I've known the Book House since the late 1970s, when it was in its previous location. Most notable to me for several things. Scholarly emphasis rather than frivolous literature. Good turnover of stock, I always find something new. And that means they are actively buying the right sort of books in good condition, and you can choose store credit, which I usually do, if I have something to sell. This kind of bookstore used to be common in university towns nationwide but has become much rarer nowadays. I never fail to stop by the Book House when on Campus, and you should, too!

By far, the coolest and best book store I have ever been to. They have a phenomenal selection for all kinds of topics and great prices.

The Book House with its vast selection of books on any topic your heart desires is a delight to get lost in. I went with kids to show them that good books live long lives and pass from one owner to another if well taken care of. We spent hours at the store, and came home with a few great books. Keep in mind that there is no children's section per-se, but almost every shelf had something my 7yo avid reader found interesting. The Book House does a lot of business online and rotates its inventory quite frequently, so if you see something you like - get it, you might not get another chance. And stop by often, as the selection always changes.

Never fails to impress. Set just above Shuang Cheng, Bookhouse provides an impressive collection and affordable prices. It's selection is so vast you may want to set aside 40 minutes to an hour just to make sure you get the most out of your trip. The prices are also fair, and often well below retail. Good rare book selection as well. Also note that they focus mostly on educational books and literature, so it is not the place to get the newest romance novel! Overall fantastic place, and I highly recommend supporting this small business if you're in the neighborhood.

I love used bookstores, and The Book House is one of my favorites! Great prices with so much variety. The rare book room is an awesome bonus to view while picking out books. A good mix of "classics" with newer publications. Highly recommend checking it out to find your next read!

The kind of place that rarely exists these days and only exists this way because it's been around long enough to curate/collect such a rare inventory.

Looking for a place to spend 15 minutes to an hour or more? I was, and this cool used book store was perfect. Cool, smart workers helped find titles and authors and genres in paperback or hard cover! They have used vinyl too! It's on the second story, so you have to hike up a few stairs, but So worth it! The floor creaks in a pleasant way and the other patrons gently talk about their finds. The prices are great, too. As an added perk (for the locals) is the fact that they have package drop off/ pick up for UPS (I believe) for a modest fee (less than a dollar). What a great place to pick up a package and a good read!

I ordered a couple of books from Book House and found their collections to be exquisite. They take great care of their materials and have wonderful customer service. Can't wait to visit the physical store my next time through town.

A great used book store. The books are well categorized and the inventory is large and eclectic. The prepared to spend an hour (perhaps more) and to walk out with a pile of books that you will want to read right away. The prices are reasonable and the staff is helpful.

I'm a big lover of bookstores and this place really delivers. With so many books piled high to the ceiling from all kinds of genres and languages including lots of vintage items to choose from, I could spend hours in here. I found some really great priced original pressing records here too. The staff is also really friendly!

This store is so cool! I admire the owners' taste. The moment you walk in it's like a completely transformative space. I love the front desk girl, she is so knowledgeable and gorgeous. The price is also super affordable. I can see it being my favorite weekend place

I think years ago I traveled through this BookStore, as there was a sense of familiarity despite it now being on the 2nd Floor of DinkyDale. Although a great resource for students, my 50+ heart and mind are taken away by the vast & diversified knowledge the BookHouse holds in its walls. Take a few hours of your day to peruse this "little maze of wonder." You won't be disappointed & Matt, Ryan & the crew will answer questions & guide you in your quest.

Do students here know how lucky they are that The Book House continues to exist? Wait, do students read books anymore? If they're interested (in starting), might I recommend The Book House? It's like a fucking house. Full of books. A veritable "book house". Sure, some of the prices are a bit high for a used selection, but what a selection!

Ok, so it's not as organized as you'd like, and there's some confusion over whether Barthes should be in the Lit Crit or Social Science section. But, come on, people, it's a used bookstore, get over it. This place is truly amazing for finding anything from all those copies of Staggerford that you were secretly lusting after to obscure American poetry that you need for your class. The folks who work here are always nice and very willing to hold books while you shop or grab a bite to eat next door. I would definitely come with a little extra time since it's easy to get lost in all of the treasures.

I come back once a year thinking the mystery section will be arranged instead of stacked back 3 rows on the shelves. The meaning of insanity expecting something different, etc. Reading the other reviews, this is for people who aren't in one bag when it comes to used books, and students. I'm only into mysteries, and they might have had something I was looking for, but didn't feel like sitting on the floor and hunting when there's only a half -hearted attempt at alphabetizing. I miss the one a few doors down.

I really hope someone tells me that they have moved because I truly love getting lost in the labyrinth that was The Book House. However, the building that housed them, House of Hanson, and the guitar store has been demolished to make room for more student housing. It is a sad day, a very sad day indeed.

They have a pretty nice selection of books. I love cooking so I dropped in with my bf and picked up a few very good cookbooks for not too much money. I will probably drop by here again sometime soon to look for other books. The downside though is that it is *very* hard to find what you are looking for at times due to the nature of the store. Don't expect to find that brand new copy of 50 shades of grey on the front table. Expect to have to browse around a bit. Disclaimer: my boyfriend *does* work for them however, I am not allowing that to influence my opinion in any way.

The Book House has crowded, narrow aisles, stacks to the ceiling, and less than perfect organization. But they have a hell of a lot of books on every subject imaginable with reasonable to good prices. Before turning to the internet for an out-of-print, you should really try here. And come with time to spare, you'll end up needing it.

The Book House was here when I was at the U of M several years ago, and I'm happy to see that it's still there! It's crowded and you never know what you'll find, which makes it exciting. They'll buy your used books or give you store credit as long as it's the most recent version. I've been grateful to find a place for many of my old textbooks here. Thanks Book House!

Love their set up and their selection. Also, their prices seem very reasonable as compared to other used bookstores. I really like that they don't have music blaring like other places do. I can browse leisurely and in peace. Makes me think that I could easily start a habit of coming to this place way more often than I do.

I'm very happy with The Book House's response to my request about the book I ordered from them. I asked if they would wrap the book well so that it would be well protected when sent the mail. Record review: The cramped and crowded space has a small but decent selection of used Lps. The pricing is all over, and typical of many places they have a few fair to decent Beatles lps that are priced unreasonably high. But they do get in an unusual selection of jazz and rock that make this place worth checking out. Less stellar popular used lps are priced fairly, and in a few cases under current market frenzy pricing. The lps are stocked by an outside party that seems to deal through the VFW record show so it's a refreshing odd mix and good in that the vinyl is not beat to death thrift shop stuff.

I can always find a good book here!! There's always a very kind and helpful staff to help me find what I am looking for!! A great place to spend time away from the rest of Dinkytown.

I've ordered two books from The Book House in Dinkytown, both were in the exact condition as described. Those that order used books online know this isn't always the case. I look forward to future purchases from this book house.

I have been a loyal customer for 10 years or more at this store. Actually I missed reading in the strib that used book stores in Dinky town were dying off. Until I realized this today, "The Book House" is the last used bookstore in Dinky town. Now I wished I had actually spent more money and went to other Dinkytown used book stores before they went out of business. I adore non-fiction on various subjects. Actually I buy about half of my books from this store, in the past. And because its so close to the University of Minnesota the selection of books are indeed what I seek. Now I have an entirely different vibe from this bookstore. Its is nice and quiet, usually empty of people, but today there was a book reading with an author. Plenty of folks who had never been there before milled around and I couldn't really get anywhere without waiting for 5-8 people to realize that I actually had a direct path. Worse I was looking for something specific and the employee upstairs "Ryan" was absolutely no help. "Ryan" didn't even bother to warn me of many people there were downstairs, and didn't inform me that the type of book I was looking for was not downstairs. If Ryan tried to help in any way shape or form, wasn't so incredibly rude and inconsiderate, and attempted to warn me what was going on downstairs I would feel more comfortable coming back. And I am well aware that I am a crabby old woman, I don't watch TV, I am strange and I am very much into my books. So bookstores like "The Book House" are sacred ground for me. There are a few day employees that really irritate me so I avoid going during the week. A young lad Adrian I think his name is, is about the only hipster I don't have violent thoughts toward, so I appreciate him immensely. Keep him, don't let him leave! For a decade "The Book House" has provided me a selection of books that keep me from being hassled on the public transit, book titles/sleaves that scare off eligible young metro-sexual men, and mostly scare off people my age and younger who want to engage in mindless shitty banter that irritates the begeesus out of me. More than a few "The Book House" purchases have fallen into the bath I was soaking in, but still managed to get read cover to cover before wrinkling and bloating into something that resembles a mushroom moreso than a bound book. Books purchased at this dinkytown institution has created an escape hatch for me to crawl into and get lost for hours or days at a time. I don't know if a bunch of self-important pseudo intellectuals from the suburbs with extremely crappy manners and one "Ryan" who has no customer service skills at in the least will drive me away from my favorite book store. But this day will encourage me to check the website for store activities that will drive me into an anxiety attack, and if I see another "Ryan" working that day I'll come back some other time.

The Book House is the "other" book store in Dinkytown, or maybe Cummings Books is the "other" book store...at any rate, I was pleasantly surprised to find a small box of old vinyl in this bookstore. Rummaging through the small boxes of records, I first noticed that most of the albums were overpriced, and that I had seen most, if not all of them, at various thrift stores in the recent past. Still, there were a few gems. I found a copy of Soul Asylum's "Hang Time" for $10. I felt it was worth the cost for an album I hadn't seen any copies of locally in a long time. The store did feel a bit cramped...but aren't all locally run bookstores? They need to maximize their space, it's a golden rule of business. I'll make sure to stop back from time to time to check out the boxes of vinyl.

Oh such a wonderful place to spend an hour or two. And it's air conditioned! We found so many interesting books that I ended up taking a few home with me.

I love this bookstore. I went in one day before work looking for just one book, and walked out with about five. The woman who helped me was AMAZING. I was searching for work by Audre Lorde, and after she found what I was looking for she went so far as to print off a favorite of Lorde's work off of her computer for me. How wonderful. That would NEVER happen at a Barnes and Noble. I wish I knew her name so I could extend my gratitude for the above and beyond help that she gave me that day. The bookstore itself is two floors of floor to ceiling books, and it is glorious. If you are a book nerd like me, it is heaven to walk around that place and see what you might stumble upon next.

I kind of have a crush on this place. It seems that bookstores like this are a dying breed. If it were a little bigger you could get lost in the twisted stacks of used book love. They have everything from academic to fiction & I love the old classics that you can find... legit old copies, like the ones I would find in my grandma's house. In the time of the ipad & kindles I still hold tight to REAL books. I refuse to get with the times, I just love books!! I love the smell of books and physically turning the pages. I hope gems like this can make it as times change. Otherwise, maybe they can turn into a link to the other dimensions like the book store in Fringe ha! Check this place out if you love books & treasure hunts.

This is my favorite bookstore in Minneapolis. They seem to only hire people who really care about books and reading. Also, it is a magical experience to just go in there and wander around. Note to newcomers: look everywhere. You never know what you're going to find.

In my opinion this is the better of the two used bookstores on 14th Ave., and one of the best I've ever seen for academic subjects. Of interest to me are the impressive anthropology and sociology sections, but there are also huge sections for psychology, history, and several other disciplines. Unlike the previous reviewer, I think the organization is impressive for a used bookstore.

What Humdinger doesn't like a place like this? This is the type of place that doesn't accept credit cards, except they do. Also, I gotta add that I've been in there tons of times, spent hundreds of dollars probably, and I can't ever remember being pestered by nothin'. Not by music, not by an employee, just a cool place!

Whenever I'm near the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities I make a habit of stopping by the Book House. As long as you're not trying to find anything on the first floor - fiction - all will be well. It's the basement with walls of political science, biology, theology, and so on, that's the treasure trove.

If you want to get in and get out, or if you're looking to relax and read for 3 hours, then you're at the wrong place. If you want to come in, look around, make a mental note of (or better yet, purchase) a few titles you hadn't heard of before, head to The Book House. The more time you spend there, the better you are as a person. Just ask any of the thousands of authors who's works are sold here. The Book House is a used book store with books stacked 7-8 shelves high, hallways so small they can make passing other patrons a bit awkward at times, and handwritten/printed out signs directing you to what these shelves of books contain. The thing is: that's exactly what a used bookstore is supposed to be like. If you're looking for a meticulously organized bookstore with space to lay down.. read.. get some coffee.. head to your nearest Barnes & Noble and enjoy yourself. I'll be perusing The Book House, if you need me.

In addition to helpful and friendly service, there are some gems to be found at reasonable prices here. I found the social sciences/psychology, theology, philosophy, and critical theory sections to be particularly impressive. Perhaps due to the limited space, items or collections that have sat on the shelves and collected dust are often discounted and priced to move. It's nice to see that places like this continue to exist.

I've always loved this bookstore, and the people who run it. Classic vibe and nice people, a great selection and good prices. The kind of place you can lose time in.

Had a little time to kill today and stopped in at The Book House tonight. It was a nice exploration and fun to get see a new bookstore, but I was a little bummed about the limited selection of travel books. Overall, this a great place and I will stop in in the future.
