The 15 Best Restaurants in Lawrence, Home of the University of Kansas

"In a town full of great cocktails, the Bourgeois Pig has been a pioneer, crafting inventive drinks since 1993. With a distinctly European vibe, the Pig has an intimate indoor setting and a terrific patio for people watching. On weekends, it serves as a coffee shop starting at 11 a.m., brewing locally roasted beans from Repetition Coffee. As the day goes on, the cocktail menu offers inspired creations like the Swipe Right (Marfa grapefruit liqueur, ancho verde, lemon, Peychaud’s bitters) and riffs on classics like a spicy strawberry margarita made with strawberry-infused tequila, dry Curacao, and lime." - Erin Socha

Google
A true gem of a find on an aimless wander through Lawrence. Lively patio outside, open seats around the bar inside with dim lighting and a chill soundtrack - a great space to disappear for a minute. The butter washed gin vodka pickle brine cracked pepper martini was the perfect cap to a perfect summer weeknight vibe.

Google
My 5 🌟 food is actually drinks. Such a vibe here with beautiful and delicious cocktails. It gets busy, so please be patient. Each drink is specifically made for each customer so they take a minute to make. Bartenders was very nice, will even make you something unique id you dont know what you want. Seating is limited, but there is nice seating outside with umbrellas. We had 10 people and fit in an putdoor booth just fine.

Google
This is a cozy spot for craft cocktails or specialty beer. I was visiting from North Carolina and was very impressed by the bar service here. Neighborhood is very clean with great pizza near by. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting Lawrence.

John Donne

Google
Rude, arrogant bartender who can't be bothered to extend a minimum of civility. The crowd here prides itself on "accepting everyone", but really couldn't be more judgmental if they were Christian fundamentalists. It's just that the target of their judgement is different. Too bad. Back when the left was more ideologically diverse, the Pig was a cool place. In that sense, it's a perfect microcosm of Lawrence, Kansas

Google
lovely atmosphere and patio. bummer about the i couldn’t care less about you bartender (blond guy with facial hair). would be willing to retry in the future, but why patronize a place that doesn’t make you feel welcome.

Google
If you know what you want at this place you are ok. Don’t go into here asking for something unique because they won’t give it to you. The girl bartender that served me pointed to their menu and then said “everything we have is good.” Arrogant service, bland menu, uninteresting setting lead to my rating.

Love this place! It’s so cute and cozy, and all of the women bartenders are SUPER awesome and cool! 💕

Google
The benefit of an unprecedented time is the desire to explore and find something new I was lucky enough to find this place the barista was incredibly friendly it was weird was like a coworker and maybe even a family member you’re walking your immediately captivated by the variety of colors which place is clearly stylish and quite well appropriated but one thing that it does is it answers with really good food I had a hot chocolate it’s a friend of mine had a carrot cake which I tried and honestly it was so good I think it should be smoked from a pipe with a friend of mine and she’s eating quiche or was it this it was a spinach quiche? I can tell you she ate it so fast I don’t even think I have time to take a picture and she had a mocha with whip cream the sweetness of which was literally like kissing the sweetness of whipped cream.

Yelp
Good drinks. Good service. Good value. Friendly clientele. Fun place to while away an hour or so.

Yelp
Really tasty cocktails. I got the PERFECT DISGUISE (front), our friend got the HOUSE GIMLET (center), and my wife got the SIDE QUEST (back). I really liked the Perfect Disguise. It was described as a variant of the Negroni. Agreed. But I'd say this mellows out all the aspects of a Negroni that I don't like + adds more complexity and balance. Not too bitter, not too sweet, but with an added velvety texture of the almond butter. Still Boozy. Cool bar. We sat outside, but the inside is a really nice cross between a bar and a cafe.

Yelp
Great service ambiance and drinks. Try the gimlet !!!! Cool inside cool outside Bartender gal is excellent

Yelp
I love this bar/coffee shop. One of my favorite places in Lawrence - it has the BEST ambiance, good selection of cocktails/non-alcoholic options, and talented bartenders/baristas. The house gimlet, spicy strawberry marg, and any of the rotating boozy slush flavors were repeat orders for me. But they also make a great cappuccino and chai if you're just looking for caffeine! The exterior and interior are adorable, charming and inviting. I especially enjoyed the little front patio area. All around great vibes any visit. And I wish I still lived nearby!

Yelp
Bartenders are always friendly! Great cocktails and affordable light beers. This is a place where you can strike up a convo with anyone! Also, the tall bartender with space buns has a really cool bicycle! Napkins are overflowing, they were practically giving them away! I can't remember anything once I leave this place! This review was meant to be constructive and not a reflection of my bad drinking habits.
google avatar

Jana J.

Yelp
I asked for a Pumpkin Spice/espresso martini, and although they did not have this on the menu the bartender gladly offered to make me a creamy espresso martini with all spice. It was a great drink! Amazing service as well. Would definitely be back often if I lived near!

Yelp
I soooo wanted to love this place, but I just can't recommend. We were there on a week day. We weren't greeted by anyone, and the bar was full, so we sat a table for 5-10 minutes with not even a look our direction. It appeared that the bartender was the only one working, but several others who clearly worked there were just standing at the bar drinking. The bartender was happily having a long conversation with her friends at the bar, so we went up and ordered drinks from her. It' took some time to acknowledge us. That should have been our cue to find someplace else, but we stuck it out. The drinks were horrible. Apparently, they make their own "tonic syrup", so when you order a gin & tonic, they don't tell you that, they just pour this nasty syrup in which totally ruined the drink. It took a good 5 minutes of standing at the bar waiting for the bartender to look our direction to pay our tab because she was too busy on her phone and talking to her friends. It was a waste of time and money and I will never go back. It's too bad because I love a great local cocktail bar. The decor was cute and I love the name but it just didn't live up to even my minimum expectations. They are clearly in need of some experienced management oversight.

Yelp
Cozy bar off Mass with a great vibe and friendly bartenders. Cool outside patio. Must visit when in Lawrence.

Yelp
...*sigh*...every year I swear I'm going to keep up with my reviews...and every year December rolls around and I realize exactly how far behind I've gotten. Like, dude we went to the Bourgeois Pig in June? July? WTH?!? Well, might as well get to it then - We stopped by with friends after dinner at Limestone Pizza on the recommendation of another friend (who knows what I like cocktail wise). I'll completely honest, it's been so bloody long that I can't completely remember what any of us ordered, just that they were delicious and the vibe was quite casual. We didn't stay all that long, mostly because we had to drive back to KC for our fur babies, and had already had a couple of drinks with dinner. Definitely a great spot to stop in for drinks after dinner. Might not remember what we had, but I do remember they were good! So yay! :-P

Yelp
This place was a complete disaster. Not a cocktail napkin in the place or any napkins of any kind. No paper towels in the bathroom the urinal was broken. The draft machine was broken so NO draft beer or Quirks. This place is a dump!!

Yelp
Good drinks, great music, chill ambience. Always a great experience, love this place!

Yelp
This is a real hip joint. I spent a Sunday afternoon here with a friend, sipping coffee and having a long conversation. It was a gorgeous day and the steady flow of customers didn't end while we were there. This seems like the type of place to go on a first date or meet a small group of friends. All the time there I felt like I was in Westport KCMO, there was no shortage of hipsters or millennials.
google avatar

Abby M.

Yelp
I was seeking a quiet place for a boozy-coffee drink. When I searched "coffee cocktails" this joint showed up. I AM SO HAPPY!!!! Yelp steered me right. Yay for good searches!! I ordered what the gal described as a "White Russian with espresso". This drink and the ambience gave me the relaxation and zen moment I needed to find myself after a stressful day. Highly recommend this cafe/bar for meeting up with someone for a casual conversation or sitting alone just to decompress.

Yelp
This is the perfect bar to stop at after dinner on Mass, especially if you love craft cocktails. Located on the corner of 9th and Mass, it's more refined / hipster than some of the other bars on Mass that are usually swimming with college students. Don't get me wrong -- "The Pig" still gets busy in the evenings -- it's just a different crowd and you can hear clearly enough to hold a conversation without yelling. When I visited, I sat at the bar counter. There were other tables inside the space, but not very many. The bar was dimly lit, yet welcoming. Because this *is* also a coffee shop, and because I wanted dessert, I had to order an espresso martini. It was fantastic -- one of the best I've had! Super creamy, not too sweet, and the classic 3 beans on top. Not to mention, our service was amazing. Someone in my party accidentally caught their scarf on the bar and a glass tipped. The bartender immediately helped remove the glass and offered us another drink on the house since we had lost the first. Don't cry over spilled milk (or espresso martini?) but we certainly didn't expect them to comp us for the drink due to our own mistake. We greatly appreciated how the situation was handled, and made sure to tip to cover the cost. Just felt like it was super thoughtful and wanted to share that story to show how kind the service is here. If you've never been, I highly recommend! I try to go back every time I'm in Lawrence.

Yelp
The bartenders here are amazing! They are friendly and really know their stuff. The cocktails are prefect for a special night out and very reasonably priced.
google avatar

Yelp
Love this place for delicious cocktails before dinner, or let's be honest, anytime. Service is great. Eclectic mix of people. My only critique is the music...just bad top 40 from every decade. Come on!

Yelp
Great cocktail bar on the corner of 9th and Mass. We went to the Pig on a Friday around 10:30. It was fairly busy, the place on the inside is small and probably only seats a dozen or so. Outside there is much more seating, we were able to find a couple of spots right by the door. During our couple of hours at the Pig they had 2 bartenders working. Usually you had to go order drinks yourself on your tab but a couple of times when it was slower a bartender would come out to clean up empties and cans and see if you needed anything. Both were very friendly and helpful. We had some mixed drinks and beers. They don't have a ton of beers on tap but what they have is well cultivated and mostly (if not entirely) local. The couple of drinks we had were mixed well and tasted great. Prices were commensurate with other locations on Mass, so not cheap or anything but definitely not exhorbitant. Recommended, I'll go back next time I am in Lawrence.
google avatar

Raeley G.

Yelp
Love the unique cocktails and moody speakeasy vibes inside! There's a nice front patio as well for good weather. I had a Trinidad Sour made with egg white and they definitely did it the right way! Was $12 (not cheap) but the drinks are pretty strong and it's worth it for the experience. Looking forward to coming again.
google avatar

Matt J.

Yelp
Fun place! Great service and to go drinks. Don't recall having a green tea shot here but get it anyway.
google avatar

Sonya D.

Yelp
I guess this is mainly just an artisan cocktail bar now. The coffee menu is teensy weensy. Go here if you're out for great cocktails. I'm still giving them 5 stars because they're great at what they do. Great artisan cocktails, great servers, great Place to chill with friends with drinks. Just know not to go for unique coffee.
google avatar

Ivy G.

Yelp
I stopped by here looking for a nice cocktail on my drive west and I couldn't have made a better choice! The staff is super friendly, talkative, and cheery. My two cocktails were great! One a mezcal riff on a negroni, the other a classic corpse reviver. Pricing is super fair - pre tip my whole bill was only $16. What a steal. Thanks for a great evening! **Due to covid they are serving ONLY outdoors, where they have probably 25+ seats**
google avatar

Audrey L.

Yelp
20-year old pregnant woman here so this is just a review of the coffee portion of the experience. The booze-y portion of their menu is more expensive but sounds pretty impressive, so perhaps that would've changed my review a lot. I ordered a hot breve, vanilla latte and an iced latte, both to-go on a Saturday evening at 7:30. After trying a lot of smaller spots in the area, I would say this is towards the bottom of the list in terms of both coffee quality and atmosphere. Their espresso tasted over extracted but it could be something off with their beans. I still liked the breve, vanilla latte but there was a lot to hide the twang in the espresso (hence the 3). The iced latte showed more of the espresso and I was underwhelmed. Both were only $8 which isn't bad at all, but you can get better in the area for similar prices. It was already quite busy both inside and out by 7-ish. I got the heck out of there ASAP because it was not the kind of place you can enjoy a drink peacefully. It is cool and whatnot but loud and small. I felt constantly in the way. The male barista was very polite and nice (and patient) but the woman who was working was not any of those things. She was never directly rude but I felt like she thought I was wasting her time. Never really made eye contact, sighed at me once or twice, and seemed rushed. All in all, I don't think this is a BAD place, it's just not MY place. I'll come back when I'm interested in a shnazzy cocktail but (probably) never for a latte. There's too much great coffee in Lawrence to pay to drink shrug worthy coffee.
google avatar

R M.

Yelp
This place is a Lawrence gem. I love how simple it is, service was quick, easy, and barista gave good advice on the menu. I haven't tried coffee yet, but the negroni was a really fine cocktail and sipping it on the front patio just off Mass was so nice after a long day.
google avatar

Craig S.

Yelp
Depends upon how much hipster you can handle. I mention this because some people can't handle any while others go full-hog....(yeah, you see what I did there) Nevertheless, really quality drinks. I had the horsefeather. Complex layered flavors. Their coffee menu looked intense too. I would go again, even though I don't have a man-bun or ironic mustache
google avatar

Yelp
The bourgeois pig is always a treat. When I was in college I'd stop in for a coffee in the morning and sometimes visit in the evening for a nice cocktail. Back then it tended to attract a quieter crowd in the evening compared to other nearby bars. Stopping in last night it still has a nice charm to it and the cocktails I sampled were as tasty as ever. It's a great bar to visit for an intimate date, or conversation with a good friend. If the weather is nice be sure to take advantage of the patio.

Olivia B.

Yelp
Creative drinks, cool vibes, plenty of outdoor seating. Love sitting outside here when it's chilly and ordering hot coffee cocktails.
google avatar

Kristy S.

Yelp
Very tasty cocktails for standard prices. My partner ordered and I sat outside so I can't speak to other details. Will be back for more tasty drinks and to update this review!
google avatar

Stephanie W.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic. It's a coffe place/bar. Great atmosphere! I had plenty of time to start off with coffee, get work done on laptop and end with a cocktail. This place is definitely a chill spot! The service was great and patrons are encouraged to sit a while.
google avatar

Yelp
You gotta love a bar that opens at 7:00 am. LOL. The Pig has been around for awhile. It is quintessential local bar. I have been going to the BP when they first opened and all they served was coffee. My how times have changed! It was quaint in the day and now it is even more amazing. I went there recently to meet friends for a drink and a cigar on the outside deck. What a treat! We had a wonderful time. The drinks were terrific. The atmosphere is comfortable and inviting, too. There is no pretention about this bar. It is not a fancy bar but it is also not too casual. The establishment itself is not very big but there is outside seating in front and in back. When I was there a few nights ago, we sat out back and it was pleasant enough. There was a group of guys there plotting their next Poke-stop and another girl by herself reading a book. That is so Lawrence and the Bourgeois Pig is a great place to relax and enjoy a yummy cocktail.
google avatar

Yelp
Mmmm, coffffffeeeee. That's all I've had at The Bourgeois Pig, and that's all I need. This was some fantastic coffee on a crisp, cool fall morning. I had about an hour to kill and wanted to try something new, so I popped in here to see what they're all about. Not the biggest space in the world, but big enough to peruse their nice a.m. drink options. The vibe is studious, with exposed brick, people reading and writing, and all in all very college-town. I went with a single origin pour over, and it was worth the handful of minutes it took to be ready. Rich, flavorful, piping hot and one of the better pour overs I've had recently. Highly recommend popping in here for coffee, and who knows, maybe a drink or two.
google avatar

Corban H.

Yelp
Cappuccino in the mornings. Beers and cocktails after work. My favorite place to hangout, have meetings, do a crossword, or inevitably bump into friends and co workers. The service is superb, the prices are great, and I have never had a bad drink under the helpful and careful hands of these baristas and bartenders. They have an excellent operation that carries over from morning coffee shop, to happy hour patio, to late night cocktail bar, with plenty of ambience. Whether the sun is coming through the large south facing windows in the morning, or the candles are all lit and assembled behind the bar at night, this historic building is home to a classic and beautiful Lawrence staple, that I hope will be around for a very, very long time. See you there!
google avatar

Carlos Q.

Yelp
I had about an hour to kill and my friends wanted to get a drink for my birthday, so I popped in here to see what they're all about. Not the biggest space, but big enough for a couple alcoholic drink options. The vibe is studious, with people reading and writing, and all in all very college-town environment. I went with a couple of mimosas, being a Sunday late morning I said "why not". From the list it looks like they are also known for their coffee. Not that it has anything bad but overall a hispter-ish place. The baristas/employees were nice and friendly. Not a whole lot of wait for your order which is great.
google avatar

Derek D.

Yelp
One of my favorite bars in Lawrence! The fact that they support local artists by rotating the work on the walls frequently is great! We need more places that do this. The inside is a super quaint and cute place for a small group or a date. It isn't really appropriate for larger group settings. All their drinks are great and the bartenders are quick and friendly!
google avatar

A.j. L.

Yelp
This place has a wide range of amazing cocktails! The vibe gives a very accurate description of the town of Lawrence with the culture of the people. I've been here many times and they have by far hands down the best Bloody Mary's! Today I'm writing this review because I just had the worst experience ever here. Just hoping the owners read this post to have a talk with the auburn girl who has an arm sleeve tattoo on her right arm, I think her name is Hannah. The worst bartender ever. She also has the worst attitude I've ever come across. She was extremely rude and cold. Definitely will be telling people about her, which is sad because the bar is a cool place.
google avatar

Joi B.

Yelp
This update is for the coffee house aspect of BP. I prefer it as a bar, but the day/evening baristas are really top notch and prepare a good cup of coffee. This isn't somewhere I'd go for "to go" coffee (Z's next door would be that, but Z's next door is more of a laptop environment, and BP is more a "chat over a cup of coffee or glass of wine"). That said, there is nothing like sitting outside of BP on a late summer evening with a cocktail. Ah, I can't wait for those times again.
google avatar

Tracy V.

Yelp
I really like the atmosphere in this place: music is relaxing, the decor is neat, and you can get alcohol or coffee under the same roof. Woo hoo! I want to love this place, I really do. But... My ONLY complaint is that the people are pretentious. I'm not from the area and when I entered (and while I was there), the patrons made it very obvious that they knew I wasn't a regular customer at the very least. My bad for not coming in with thick-rimmed glasses, a mustache, and other hipster features?
google avatar

Samantha M.

Yelp
What's up with all the pretention talk? Did anyone notice there's a college in Lawrence? What are people with PhDs supposed to sit around and talk about? Skateboarding? Lawrence is a college town. Thus the excess of tragically hip college-age dufuses. Don't the profs deserve some props for molding their young minds? Or at least somewhere to congregate and meditate on the state of higher education in '08? The outdoor seating gives the Pig some much-needed breathing space. And I admit when I've walked by I've heard "The other day in my intro class ..." But these conversations aren't any more pretentious that the youngsters who think they know everything about music, or raw foods, or whatever else you hear walking around Mass. At least the Bourgeois Pig's clientele is probably in by 10 p.m.
google avatar

Greg G.

Yelp
The daily drinks deals are awesome! $5 for a Moscow mule on a Monday this place is simply charming
google avatar

Bee L.

Yelp
I love the Pig. Rumor has it (considering it's part of historic downtown), this little coffee & bar used to be a horse's stable for the townfolk back in the day. Some walls expose the red brick from long ago, and the ceiling is tall, making the vibe a classy place one would find on the coasts. The regulars are devoted to the Pig, as am I. Yes, I'm one of those "Lawrence hipsters" that snobbishly critiques the art, coffee and decor at most shops, and I appreciate a place where you will mingle with both the "intellectuals" such as avid Maupassant readers and university professors, as well as the townies who huddle around the bar to get a strong buzz and chat to shoot-the-sh*t. The drink deals offer some of the best in town, especially the Bloody Mary for $5 on Sunday, and the daily French press coffee for $2.5 - $3. They provide sugar in the raw liquid, yes! and authentic macaroons, made by a Frenchman in the area. Helps me fulfill my pretentious sweet tooth and cocktail cravings on the reg, but I mainly go here for the bartenders. :)

Yelp
Bourgeois Pig has really grown on me over the past few months. I now get what they're trying to do. I also think the quality of their coffee and espresso drinks has improved during the past few months. I have no idea what it is.....maybe the barista's or maybe PT's has been sending better beans. Not sure, but they still carry one of the all time favorite blends around: PT's Farm Girl. Still do a nice pour over and the Latte's are spot on. I'm really diggin' their daily drink specials. A good bargain that is quite popular. Unless you arrive early in the morning, there may be issues with seating. In my opinion, the Pig has the most limited amount of seating in the city. Maybe Z's next door has less, I'm not certain. I really am a fan of the interior lighting and decor of the Pig. Excellent all the way around. The tables and seat are comfy and relaxing. Evening hours tend to get kinda loud with people getting their drink on. Smokers still try to be slick sometimes and wonder in through the back. The pig attracts smokers like no one else in Lawrence. Henry's and La Prima have their fair share as well. I've also noticed the female Barista's and bartenders are still friendlier and in better spirits than most of the males during the past few years. Not all, but most. Still one of the coolest, funkiest coffee shop/bar vibes in Lawrence Kansas.
google avatar

Tifani B.

Yelp
Their house gimlet is my personal favorite drink! I've been here at all hours of the day. It's a great place to get a coffee from and do work in the morning. I also like it for their mimosas/pomosas during a Sunday as an accompaniment to comic book reading. Obviously, their house cocktails are to die for.
google avatar

Jamie D.

Yelp
Had a Moscow mule!! It's good. Small but chill place. One of the few bars open early on a weekday. Not too pricey. Would come back!
google avatar

Ralphie S.

Yelp
When I moved away from Lawrence in 1995 there was a place called The Bourgeois Pig that served coffee drinks and alcohol. Get out of town - that's just too weird of a business model to survive! Well it's 2016 and it's still there! Went there after a concert last night and enjoyed a perfect late night mocha in a dimly lit café/bar with nice staff, interesting clientele and good company. Sometimes you can go home again!
google avatar

Shannon I.

Yelp
"The Pig" is a great bar and kind of an institution. One thing that I love about it is that it's quiet enough to have a conversation with the folks that you're with. But, it's not SO quiet that you feel like you're going to disturb other folks by laughing and having a good time. It's a community space that welcomes a good cross section of folks. Also, they have the artisan ice for your whisky that won't water down your drink. There is a lot to love here.
google avatar

Gavin G.

Yelp
I stopped in for a quick cup of coffee and some WiFi. Their pour-over coffee was well done and priced as I would expect. The microscopic first floor was very crowded with laptop wielding wifi users, but there were a few high-top spots available. Service was fine, but several customers had to wait for the bartender / coffee server to return from whatever opening chores she had to do before they could order. The lone worker seemed to have a LOT to do and was constantly taking inventory, receiving packages from FedEx or the liquor distributor and cleaning. Good coffee, not a super comfy place to camp in the morning to work.
google avatar

Mark H.

Yelp
Great little find in downtown Lawrence. If cocktail culture is your thing, this is your place. I found the bartending and selection to be quite good. It is dimly lit at night and more of a coffee shop during the day. I was alone, in town for a business trip, and found the establishment to be welcoming with an eclectic clientele. Check it out!
google avatar

Katie S.

Yelp
Cocktails like no other. AhhMaZing!!!! Make sure to try the mule with the pepper infused vodka. Delicious! The selection of bourbon is fantastic!! We will be frequenting it again!
google avatar

Yelp
Very unique little spot! The bartender really cares that you love your drink & makes every effort to customize it just for you. Go to place for daytime drinking!

Yelp
This is a review from a tourist. I could see this place from where I stayed and couldn't figure out if it was a bar or a coffee shop, so I finally stepped in. This place is awesome! It is like a fancy coffee shop during the day and a nice bar at night. My day usually started here and ended here. Has a very yuppy/hipster vibe and they have great coffee and drinks. Ten stars for the name of this place.
