Oh man - what a treat to find this gem of a coffee shop out in the Westchester area! I've heard of The Boy & The Bear, but haven't visited any of their locations yet. I was grabbing poke around the area and decided to drop by, and I was not disappointed!
I'm a huge fan of single origin coffee. I usually brew pour-overs with my V60 at home, but every once in a while (okay, okay actually quite often..), I'll treat myself to ~*outside coffee*~, which almost always involves espresso because I don't have an espresso machine at home... (yet! Let's manifest that, shall we?)
The Boy and the Bear specialize in Colombian coffee beans. When I found out The Boy & The Bear served two different espresso types and had a macchiato sampler on the menu, I had to try it!
I'm a bit of a purist, so I tend to order my drinks with no sweeteners or flavoring, so that I could really taste the beans.
The Macchiato sampler was amazing. It came with two macchiato samples, one with traditional style espresso and one with modern, two samples of their Colombian chocolate (50% and 70%), and of course, sparking water to cleanse the palate between tastings.
Both espressos were great, but the modern style really blew my mind. I spoke with the baristas about which beans these were, and they said they rotate the modern style espresso beans often, but they're always carefully curated and a proprietary blend of the special ones that they have in stock. Even on the menu, they only serve the modern espresso via espresso shot, americano, macchiato, or gibraltar so that you don't ~disrespect~ these special beans with a bunch of milk.
The modern espresso paired really well with the 70% Colombian chocolate, and the traditional paired well with the 50%. The modern espresso had a brighter acidity and punchier fruity notes. Both espressos shared a deep complexity. The traditional espresso had more notes of chocolate and caramel, but still had a fruity brightness in the finish. I can go on and on!
If lattes are more of your thing, they are excellent here too. I ordered a whole milk latte as well (no sweetener). You can still taste the espresso, but it's not as pronounced.
Parking here can get tricky. There's a few spaces in the underground parking garage next door, but it gets taken up quickly. There is plenty of street parking close by, if you don't mind the walk.
There's a moderate amount of seating, but it's definitely not for bigger groups. A lot of the seating is bar-styled or smaller tables meant for parties of 2.
The vibe here was great. I liked the ambiance, the music was chill, and the baristas were really helpful, welcoming, and amazing at what they do.
