After finding ourselves searching for pizza with outdoor dining outside after 10pm, we had very few options local to Hoboken/JC. This is how we stumbled upon The Brick, and we were not disappointed! To provide context, I give this restaurant 5 stars for outdoor Italian dining after 10pm, but have further criticisms if that was not the case.
Truthfully, we have overlooked The Brick for years, as the counter-service atmosphere (my reasoning for 2 stars) and fierce Italian dining competition didn’t give it any stand-out features.
However, we were satisfied by our meal! We started with the complimentary garlic knots, which were addictive. We then had the fried calamari and chopped salad. The calamari was fresh and we did enjoy it all, though admittedly it was not competitive with other calamaris in the area. The salad was also everything we expected and a big portion which I liked.
We then had a medium pizza, half chicken parm (with a personal modification of Vodka sauce instead of tomato) and half prosciutto-arugula. The crust was crispy, and the toppings went well together. I do think the toppings may have been a bit top-heavy for the pie, as I typically prefer a thinner NY style slice, but I still enjoyed it.
We finished with the Spaghetti Fra Diavolo. It was good, but also not top tier Italian. Very spicy, if you’re into that!
I was intrigued by the large vegan and gluten-free menu, which I had no idea about and would definitely recommend to folks with dietary restrictions.
Overall, I think this is one of the best options for late-night sit-down outdoor Italian dining. But go any earlier, and the plethora of other options unfortunately outshines The Brick.
