This is one of the few tearooms that offers a vegan service. You have to book it in advance, so I have had this booked for several weeks, before we even came out to SD. You book everything online, and it asks things like "how many people in your party?" and "how many need vegan?" and "how many children?" Since mom is 100% vegan, and I eat anything that isn't nailed down, we ordered all 3 as vegan. It is only $5/person to change tea to vegan, so we opted for that on all of them.
Once we arrived, we were seated in the order we checked in, so we were the second table to be seated. But weirdly, we were the last table to be served.
We had 4 different people servicing our table while we were there. The first one came up and said "I'm told you're the vegan table" and when we asked if they had a sweetener other than non-vegan white sugar cubes, or any milk other than oat, the server went to the back, came back to tell us only sweet and low, and when we said that we couldn't have honey either, she said that they only use honey flavor and not real honey, and then we never saw that particular server again.
They start the service with the house blend tea on the table, but it has chamomile, which is sort of a polarizing ingredient... You either love it, or you hate it. If we loved chamomile, we would have loved the idea of sitting down to a fresh pot of tea. Unfortunately, we aren't huge fans of chamomile, so we felt bad about either wasting an entire pot of tea, or drinking one that you don't really like. I wish we could have just opted out of their house blend. They do post a menu online with all of their other teas, so you can decide what tea you want before you even set foot inside. And each person gets their own pot, so we each got to try multiple pots of tea. My daughter got her own pot of hot cocoa, although they also have some very kid-friendly tea options too.
Next, we had a second person come up and inform us that they meant to call us and let us know... There is no children's vegan option. They either get the kids tea, or the adult one, or some weird combination of both. We said to just go ahead and give my daughter the regular kids tea meal, but it ended up being some kid friendly options that were posted on the kids menu, and some of the adult options that she wouldn't even dream of touching. The kids menu had things like chocolate spread sandwich (which she loved) and instead of bringing the cucumber sandwich that she would have liked, they gave her a pepper, cream cheese and artichoke sandwich, which she HATED.
The food was a little lackluster compared to some of our normal tea services. The filling was pretty nonexistent on some of the items. The vegan alternative to the cheese sandwich sounded PHENOMENAL. It was introduced as a chutney and curry sandwich, but the filling was so thinly spread, you couldn't even taste the curry. The "chicken" salad sandwich was tasty, made with grapes and some things to add crunch. Good, but small. And we did enjoy the pepper sandwich.
The second tier was a "sausage" roll with a pickle relish type jam, a stuffed mushroom, and an onion and "honey" topped puff, and two strawberries with four slimy mango slices. The flavor was good on most of it, just too small to actually even apply the jam to. The strawberries were okay, but the mangoes were inedible. Not sure if they were frozen and thawed, or if whatever they put on them made them slimy. Gross.
The bottom tier was a scone and some jams. Little one also got a scone with lemon curd, cream, and jam. The apricot jam tasted... odd, but the flavor of the darker berry jam was okay. The vegan scone was as we expected it to be... pretty dry, but that is something you sort of get used to when egg is not involved. Daughter liked the "butter" (clotted cream), and the lemon curd was nice and lemony. She picked the raisins out of the scone since she didn't like the texture they gave it, but she ate most of it once de-raisined.
We really enjoyed the coconut and cocoa nib tea. The chocolate strawberry one I ordered was very sweet. The abundance of mismatched teapots is cute, but some of the pots seemed more ornamental than functional. I burned the heck out of myself on a pot that could not stand up to the heat of the hot water or the small tea warmer.
Overall, while there were some lovely aspects, our biggest complaint is just overall value. Tea was $53 each for regular, or $58 for vegan or GF, and child's tea is $33. When you only receive 11 food items and a pot of tea, that comes to around $5 per item. Not bad for a scone, but terrible value for a single stuffed button mushroom. We left hungry. Our tea came to $195 after tip, and there are just so many more options you can have for that here. Most expensive but also underwhelming tea we have had.
