The Best Happy Hours in Denver | Eater Denver

"Despite its heavy metal theme, this wildly popular Overland bar couldn’t be friendlier or more welcoming, running drink specials almost more often than not — from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. And the neighbors are here for it, knocking back select bottled beers for $3, $4 glasses of house wine and well shots, and craft pints for $2 off — which go down all the easier alongside always-affordable snacks like loaded tots, steak-and-cheddar egg rolls in creamy chili sauce, and fried pickles with blue cheese dip." - Ruth Tobias

The food took a long time to arrive, and when it did, my brisket sammy and tater tots were cold. The gluten free bread here is not that good- it’s dry. The candied pork belly wedge and the hotbox mac and cheese were both very good. The restaurant was really cold, and the music is super loud. While the food was decent, all the other factors make it a 3 star.

Love this place. It’s definitely a heavy metal Headbanger atmosphere. It’s too bad It’s not bigger. It looks like it would be a great place to have a stage and live music. But starting out with a five star review, the food was exceptional. We got the Pork green chili tater tots to start followed by the homemade battered buffalo chicken sandwich. It was exceptionally good and lightly drizzled with buffalo sauce. I probably would’ve asked for a little extra sauce, but was content. The french fries were not shoestring but skinny fries, piping hot with salt and pepper which I really liked. We also got the gluten-free brisket mac & cheese with green chili, which was exceptional. The brisket was better than what we’ve had at some barbecue joints and would highly recommend it.

Google
The Brutal Poodle was the most unexpected celiac friendly restaurant that I have ever been to. My 7 year old daughter has celiac disease and after our 2 night stay at a Denver Hampton watching her older sister taking full advantage of the waffle bar, it was our mission to find a gluten free waffle before leaving the city. After a few phone calls, we found ourselves being walked to our table by the tattooed host of a death metal themed pub with music my kids have never heard before. I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. Then came our waiter. He kneeled down next to my youngest daughter, looked her right in the eyes and told her, not us, everything they could do gluten free for her. It was impressive!!! Dedicated fryers, dedicated grill, gluten free buns for the burgers, gluten free noodles for the Mac and cheese! They had waffles and chicken tenders! I don’t think there was a single item on the menu that they couldn’t do for her! And to top it all off, it was a great experience and a teachable moment for my family to learn that just because something seems hard or rough on the outside, it doesn’t mean it’s not kind and thoughtful or caring on the inside. The Brutal Poodle did right by my daughter and our family and I highly recommend it!!! 10/10.

If you like metal music and yummy food, this place is for you. I enjoyed the moody ambiance, tastefully hung art and cool band posters. It was clean, the employees were attentive and had an eclectic mix of patrons. The skull bead on my sandwich toothpick was a nice touch. Happy hour every day from 11-6! Plus, they serve Malort. 💀🤘🏽

Google
Brutally good food. Visiting The Brutal Poodle was actually on our list of things to do the first time we were in Denver but never made it. So, Cassey and I made plans to visit before she dropped me off at the airport. We arrived a few hours before my flight took off and were greeted by a friendly bartender and heavy metal playing. The Brutal Poodle is a restaurant/bar that is heavy metal themed. I was so excited to eat and drink here because I love me some heavy metal and it does not disappoint on that at all. Cassey and I ordered a beer and the Brutal Burger. Cassey got hers with a side salad and I got mine cooked to medium rare. It took about 15 minutes for our food to come out and I ordered a second beer shortly after the food was brought out. One or two bites into the burger and I knew this was the best burger I’ve ever had. Each bite was better than the last and it was 100% juicy and full of flavor. The fries were also delicious and seasoned to perfection. After two big beers and the fat burger and large amount of fries, I was stuffed. Cassey really enjoyed her food, too. The skewers they used to hold the burgers together had little skulls on them. Very on-point for this place. Now that I am back home, I keep telling everyone about The Brutal Poodle and tell them to check it out if they are ever in Denver. In fact, I am about to order a shirt off their website to wear around town. See if you can spot it in some of the photos in my future posts. Stay brutal, crank the heavy metal, and throw some horns in the air.

Google
This was such an awesome spot. We were so hungry after a long day of snowboarding. Perfect spot for the best food in town. A few of us had the brisket sandwich, which was so yummy. The meat was perfectly done, and the flavor was amazing. The sweet potato fries were so delicious. They also had one of the best Moscow mules. Our server was really good, very attentive, and offered good suggestions. Thank you, Denise! We will be coming back to this spot for sure. Really enjoyed all the food.

Google
I put off coming here for a while out of nerves and it’s the worst mistake I’ve ever made. The food is incredible especially the fries with green chili and if you come for drinks just pray that you get Dakota as your bartender. His drinks are the best and he’s so charming and personable you feel like you’re talking with a friend the moment he greets you. So get the fries, try something new, and ask for the bartenders recommendation while you headbang and hang and always always always tip your server

Google
The Brutal Poodle is an awesome bar off S Broadway that has great drinks, great food, and most importantly blasting metal music! There are not many metal-themed bars in Colorado in general but this one does it right. As a metalhead myself, it’s always nice coming here and socializing with fellow metal lovers. If you’re feeling uneasy about checking this place out, you really shouldn’t. Everybody is super welcoming and nice. Another reason you should check this place out is because Ben kills it behind the bar. No matter how busy it gets or how much help he has, or doesn’t have, he will make sure to take care of you. They also have a decent sized patio to enjoy the nice weather outside or to soak in the weekend night air.

Yelp
Ryan, Wes, and Lane, took great care of a family gathering that we had today. We had over 20 guests. I did confirm over a week out to make sure they would be ready for us and not caught off guard. They definitely were ready. Service was on point. Even with a last-minute shift from outside to inside due to crazy Denver weather. The food came out, surprisingly quickly, considering how busy they were. While everything was tasty as usual, do yourself a favor and get the Nutella bread pudding with the Banana Foster ice cream. Amazing indulgence.

Yelp
This place is sick. Definitely not over rated or over-hyped. It lives up to its reputation. My only complaint is that I wish that we had discovered it sooner! The atmosphere is dope. Service was great. We got the hot box signature Mac n cheese. OH! MY GOD! This is guilty pleasure on every level. We also tried the birria tacos which was the specialty of the day. They were good. I'm a birria snob. They were not my favorite. There were a number of other items that peaked my curiosity so I will definitely be back. That Mac alone is worth the stop, you'll thank me!

Yelp
The ambiance here was fantastic, good metal and the wait staff was very friendly. Also, the Bloody Mary I had was fantastic. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because I asked for the vegan pho with tofu, but I'm pretty sure they still put beef broth in it?? Tater tots are also pretty damn good.

Yelp
We went here on a whim because we were in the area. It is situated in the S.broadway area. If you are in your 20s and love 80s metal, this is the place to be. When you first walk in, you will hear the music that you love, at a volume you are probably use to. There were 4 of us in the group and were shown to a table right away. Our wait person, Kristie, took our drink order and dropped off the menus. We ordered food and it was delivered quickly. The mac and cheese was definitely home made. Taste and presentation was well done for adult tastes. Side salads was also excellent, with more then just lettuce. I noticed hamburgers being delivered to other tables and they looked big with sides included. Kristie was so attentive. She checked on us a number of times making sure all was ok. The bar it self was the perfect neighborhood hang out. The place was extremely clean including the restrooms Walls were filled with posters and pictures that fit right in with the 80s metal. Even though the 4 of us were somewhat over the 20s, we had a nice time. As an aside, we had lived through the 80s metal era so the music was familiar. I gave the 5 star review because it is a place meant for a younger crowd, not for our somewhat older group

Yelp
good but not amazinggggg. Dive bar that has a fun vibe, and I'd go back for a beer or food if I was nearby. The sweet potato fries were INSANE. They had some sort of brown sugar mixture on it and they were sooo tasty. Would definitely get an order of those again. The sriracha maple syrup and the mustard was a great pairing. This place does get loud so I wouldn't go if you're looking for a place to catch up/chat with a friend you haven't seen in awhile.

Yelp
@brutalpoodle's unique combination of heavy metal and gastro pub atmosphere has contributed to their success over the past 6 years in several ways. Firstly, it has helped them carve out a distinct identity in the competitive bar and restaurant industry, allowing them to stand out and attract a loyal customer base. Their combination of heavy metal music and a gastro pub atmosphere creates a memorable and immersive experience for patrons, setting them apart from traditional bars and eateries. Secondly, this unique combination has allowed @brutalpoodle to tap into niche markets, appealing to both heavy metal fans and food enthusiasts. By catering to specific interests and offering a diverse experience, they have been able to attract a broad range of customers, resulting in a consistent and diverse clientele. Furthermore, the fusion of heavy metal and gastro pub atmosphere has provided @brutalpoodle with a strong brand image and a strong sense of community. This has helped them build a dedicated following, with many patrons becoming regulars and spreading the word about their establishment through word-of-mouth and social media. Overall, the unique combination of heavy metal and gastro pub atmosphere at @brutalpoodle has set them apart from their competitors, attracted a diverse customer base, and fostered a strong sense of community, all of which have contributed to their success over the past 6 years.

Yelp
The wings were okay. I got the buffalo wings and they were not fully cooked. The service was okay. It was so loud in the restaurant you can barely hear what others are saying. I'm not a fan of the atmosphere. It's definitely one of a kind. It was an experience. Do not recommend for first dates.

Yelp
I dream about their Gwarled cheese since I had it the first time so I was happy to return to the Brutal Poodle. Challah bread seared with cheddar cheese filled with pork belly, three kinds of cheese, and tomato compote is perfection. Brutal Poodle is also known for their green chile and this too is full of flavor. Service is always fast and friendly. Happy Hour is 11-6pm daily and a steal with $4 wells, $4 house wine, and $3 domestic beers. All this can be enjoyed with the eclectic decor of dog art that adorns the walls.

Yelp
The best wings I got to eat in Denver...and this is coming from someone who spent 14 years in Buffalo eating the best wings, so you should totally trust me on this one. The Brutal Poodle delivers an amazing bar menu with a little bit of a fun attitude that totally fits the vibe of this seeming alternative rock bar. Their menu features surprising items like chicken pho, along with regular bar favorites like burgers, chicken wings, tater tots, etc... So what makes a perfect Buffalo wing? - the size of the wings: they have to meaty and juicy, not those tiny little ones. - the crisp on the skin: has to be nice and crispy; sometimes it's hard to get the balance of a good sauciness with the crisp of a good wing, but the best place will be able to master both. - legit blue cheese. Ranch is not the way...and this place makes delish house made blue cheese; so make sure you get it! With that said, the Brutal Poodle delivered on the wings...and a surprisingly decent bowl of pho too. Definitely recommend it!

Yelp
The Brutal Poodle is going to be one of my go-to spots when I'm in Denver from now on! It came recommended by my friend who's a local and I knew I was going to be a fan as soon as we pulled into the parking lot and I spotted the cute canine themed mural on the side of the restaurant/bar. The poodle and canine theme continued inside...but with a metal edge. (I dug it) For food I opted for the grilled cheese sandwich with pork belly (omg drooling thinking of it now). I've never had a tomato compote before but it managed to taste just like i'd dipped the grilled cheese into a yummy cup of tomato bisque. My friend opted to go with one of the menu's several mac and cheese options (the bbq brisket option) and it was another home run for the table. The spot stayed busy the entire time we were there and it wasn't hard to see why. Great food. Great service. Great ambience.

Yelp
Such a fun place! So great for spooky season as there were a ton of decorations allll over. I came here to meet a friend for dinner and drinks and it was a great place to meet up. The server was awesome and told us her recommendations for everything, and even told us her favorite drink that wasn't on the menu (pictured). Food was pretty good, but we ate before i thought to take a picture, but we ate it all!! I would go back for sure. Lots of drinks and other foods to try.
google avatar

Camille H.

Yelp
Stopped by here the other day as there was a little festival going on with bands and local breweries etc. it's a themed place where metal/rock music and dog lovers come to hang. The food was decent. I tried their wings and fries. I'm a wing snob so they weren't my favorite but they did make them extra crispy for me but definitely needed more sauce. The fries could've been fried longer and there was a ton of pepper or something on them. I'll have to come back again when it's not as busy and try other drinks and food too. But it was a fun and unique place, loved the back patio seating!

Yelp
The Brutal Poodle an electrifying metal bar. It has such an amazing atmosphere, it's a haven for metal enthusiasts. The live performances are nothing short of spectacular, featuring powerhouse bands that ignite the stage with their raw energy. The bar staff exude a laid-back vibe, ensuring every patron feels right at home in this gritty yet inviting space. Whether you're a hardcore metalhead or just looking for a unique night out, Brutal Poodle delivers an unforgettable experience that's undeniably awesome.

Yelp
Incredibly fun and unique environment with a wide array of genuinely good foods. The employees are always awesome and attentive. Also, they have the absolute best grilled cheese ever. Such a simple meal made so delicious -- I get it every time. Plus, as someone who grew up with standard poodles, love that the entire premise is a hardcore version of such a fluffy dog LOL.
google avatar

Yelp
Super loud acid rock blaring. GGAAHHHBLAAASSHHWAAAAA Homeless dude laying out front. Dark interior. Not my kind of place to hang unless I was bar hopping and senseless drunk. My edgy colleague wanted to go here so I was game to try it out. There were a few people imbibing at the bar but it was mostly empty. The music was really far too loud. My poor eardrums. Our server Hunter was very informative and attentive and boasted long, black polished fingernails. The menu was interesting to say the least and it all looked great so I settled on the smoked brisket sammy with smothered fries. (That was a mistake) But their brisket is smoked in house and really was the best I've had!! Yummmmmm. Pickles and coleslaw and brioche bun were perfect! Their green chili was tasty but the French fries sucked. Burnt flavor. The fairly clean bathrooms were unisex and smelled nice, but were 23°F in there and my butt about froze to the toilet seat! I think there was a mirror above the sink, but it was so covered with stickers and such that it was only a funky decoration at that point. So I'll probably never come back because it's just not my vibe even though the food was good.
google avatar

Corina E.

Yelp
The service was great! The owner Wes served us water and gave us menus when we sat down on the patio. We ordered a buffalo chicken sandwich and fried pickles. Unfortunately, the pickles were overcooked, but the french fries were delicious! I didn't mind the music but it was just a tad too loud for conversation.

Lisa S.

Yelp
I love going to Brutal Poodle! The green chile bowl is top notch!!! Get the chicken and waffles, you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Cool vibe and ambiance, great after work hangout spot, great bartender, good music and drinks

Yelp
Haven't been to the brutal poodle in a few years and finally got back. Food is as good as I remember and the vibes are great too. Definitely will be back this summer to enjoy again and again!

Lindsay J.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and food. The metal music wasn't too loud and the decorations were so fun. Would stop in here again anytime!
google avatar

Jeri T.

Yelp
Besides the delicious food, the liively atmosphere,, the Brutal Poodle was just plain fun ! We laughed ourselves silly over the food names, the silly poodle paintings on the walls and our servers stories. You'll love the ambience and want more of their food.
google avatar

Rachel H.

Yelp
I sent my Bloody Mary back, it was too salty to drink. I feel the food is overpriced for what I received. The food was good. I just don't think $18 for max n cheese was worth it
google avatar

Katlyn D.

Yelp
I didn't expect to find killer chicken wings here but I DID. Fall off the bone and spot on flavor. We also ordered the CFH sandwich with grilled chicken that was delish.
google avatar

Estefania S.

Yelp
This place has such a great vibe! I had dinner for a friends birthday here Monday night and nothing disappointed. For starters the place is super rad, with awesome decor both inside & outside of the restaurant. We were able to get seated as soon as we got there even though is was surprisingly busy for a Monday. The drinks & food were incredible. I loved the creativity put in naming their cocktails, totally matched with the rest of the establishment. My drink of choice was The Lemmy, which was basically an old fashioned but crazy strong! I'm not always a fan of dark liquors but this may have honestly changed my mind. The food was delicioussss! I order a Brisket Sammy & didn't regret it! The brisket was so tender, paired with their BBQ sauce which was crazy good, and their fries & tots have sooo much flavor. They hit the spot & paired perfectly with all my other options. I would love to leave a special thank you to our server of the evening, Natalie!!! She had such a beautiful personality & was very attentive with the table. Thank you for making it such a great first experience. DEFINITELY coming again!
google avatar

Savannah V.

Yelp
Definitely attracted to this place solely by the wall murals outside, they are so amazing !! Inside was a little different than expected, more rock music with an anarchy vibe. Lots of crazy stickers mounted over everything and the crowd was interesting. Definitely not a place I would take my mother but I didn't mind being there with my husband. Food was ok, we both agreed we wouldn't come back but it was definitely worth trying once
google avatar

J B.

Yelp
This is a place to come with friends for drinks and football. The food is mediocre at best. Be ready for a hangover.
google avatar

Brian E.

Yelp
Great food and great vibes. Big fan of their pho! My friend was telling me that this is her favorite bar as well. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
Overall...fantastic place. I really loved the atmosphere and thought the employees were super friendly. Our waiter could have been a little more attentive...I'm assuming he was slightly judging me for wearing a Taylor Swift eras tour shirt in a place that prioritizes metal. Ha! I was most impressed with their attention to details when it comes to a separate GF fryer for their food. I had the GF version of the chicken and waffles and they were a DREAM. So good. I highly recommend!
google avatar

Aidan S.

Yelp
Service was fast and friendly. The atmosphere is unparalleled and the food was even better. If you get the chance, it is my go-to spot for someone visiting from out of town.

Jon T.

Yelp
I took my gf and her 21 year-old daughter to "TBD" for brunch. It was fan-f'ing-tastic! The food was very good. Who knew that creative comfort food is the perfect repast whilst listening to Iron Maiden? Honestly, it would have been great under any circumstances, despite the allure of a Metal Motiff. The top-notch brisket and the various genomes of pasta in culmination with all the other clever food pairings (there was an app with shrimp, bacon and green chilis that stood out). The menu was original, tasty and reasonably priced. Is there such thing as a beer sommelier? Must be, because the list at the Brutal Poodle is legit. The staff was welcoming and efficient.
google avatar

Stefanie C.

Yelp
OKAYYY the vibes here are DOPE. And the name of the bar is ridiculous. Rarely does a place stick out for ALL its elements--food, drinks, atmosphere, and service. My best friend and I came here for happy hour one afternoon. It was pretty empty, so we sat at the bar. Not usually a fan of rock & roll décor or vibe, but it was fun. The welcoming attitude of the bartender (can't remember her name) really made a difference and made us feel like regulars. Maybe it's because she liked my tattoos. Pretty minimal food menu, but all I needed were the hot wings. Super tasty with the perfect amount of sauce. They weren't messy or dripping everywhere. Sometimes I like that, but this wasn't the day. The drink list was fantastic. We had a few margaritas because of happy hour, and I highly recommend those! They came in a tall glass, which should already mentally prepare you for a great afternoon/evening. Love Brutal Poodle!
google avatar

Douglas H.

Yelp
Food was great. Service was awesome and the owner chatted with us for a while. Ambiance was great.
google avatar

Danielle W.

Yelp
First time here, read the reviews and seemed like a pretty cool spot. The patio is dog friendly which is great. They immediately brought dog bowl of water for my pup and gave all the recommendations for food. The Mac n cheese was pretty good The burger was okay, I probably wouldn't get it again just because it's a lot The fries were saltier than the ocean and hard to eat The service was great. The server got down and even showed my dog some love and it's always bonus points for that. The Nutella Bread pudding was good. Why 3 stars? Well I understand it's "not a country club" and this is based on metal and rock but it was nothing but screamo music the whole time. I felt like I was in a tattoo shop. Trying to eat and have a conversation over lunch was near impossible. Idk maybe it's just not my taste but it was difficult to listen to after 30 mins

Ocean D.

Yelp
Do you like heavy metal? Beer? Fried food that won't hit your wallet too hard? The Poodle is a great local hangout for Denver heshers looking for a bite and a brew. Check out Headbanger Karaoke on Tuesdays!
google avatar

Dan E.

Yelp
Neighborhood staple music, food & art always on point!! love the rotating features on the menu delicious and innovative flavors!!
google avatar

Barbara S.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the food! I tried the brisket sandwich and I opted to substitute the fries for a side salad (new year new me, am I right?). Service was great, no complaints there. The ambiance really takes after the name "Brutal Poodle" as they play loud rock music. Great place to come to watch sports games. We came on a Thursday night around 7 and we had to wait a bit to get a table but it wasn't long maybe about 15 minutes! Since it was loud and kinda crowded in the entrance, we waited outside. I've been told to try the burial tots so I'll have to come back :)
google avatar

Austin T.

Yelp
Hot goth chicks, good music. Burgers are on point. Servers are pretty cool, good spot for a quick beer and burg
google avatar

Betty G.

Yelp
Great drinks, friendly folks and cool atmosphere! Not super kid friendly (I'm telling this to the breeders), so leave your young ones at home or with a sitter and go have some fun!
google avatar

Jasmin B.

Yelp
Food is incredible and service is fast... definitely a dive bar style but worth it! I recommend making your Mac and cheese brutal if you like spicy food

Darin E.

Yelp
We loved this place! We went here as part of our Denver A-Z restaurant tour. This place treats their music like their flavors, BOLD. We samples the fried pickles and jalapeno egg rolls for appetizers, both were fantastic! For dinner, our group of 4 tried the brisket sammy, the hot box mac and cheese, grilled cheese sammy and the green chili bowl. All were wonderful and none were anything you will get anywhere else. Service was very good as well, what a fun place!! We will most definitely be back.
google avatar

Karl P.

Yelp
Visited this place on a trip to the area. Food was good. Service was great and very conscientious. The place has a rock 'n' roll vibe. They had "Headbanger Karaoke" the night we went. It was exactly as it sounds... people screaming into a mic. I found it very entertaining.

Yelp
What do you know? Before coming here, just doing the Yelp search, we were all excited for the group lunch, especially on Easter Sunday. Well, by the time we got there, sent the sentinel into it to check it out and came out shaking head. Well, I went to check it out and finding out that it is outdated or classic dive bar. Also had umbrella covered patio and we opted sit there. Host was nice enough to have us sit at the patio but was right at the front of speakers playing heavy metal. Host and servers were courteous and timely. Had plenty of delicious entry items and they came out in timely manner. If you are here to listen to such music and have interesting items like pho, chicken and waffles or Mac and cheese while enjoying your favorite drink, this is it. However, if you are expecting fine dining, move on! Yes, I was HEADBANGing WHILE I was EATing!
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
Food was ok. Service was just ok. Atmosphere is a metal/horror which is pretty cool in itself. Biggest rub is that I'd put money in for music on their digital juke box and they kept skipping/stopping my songs. What a pain in the ass. Just don't have music on there if you don't want people to play. I spent money and had songs ready to go that got deleted. I didn't get my money back.
google avatar

Cris V.

Yelp
Was excited to try the food at the Brutal Poodle as the website menu and photos looked outstanding. In person, the menu not as impressive. Maybe all the same items but no photos? Ordered the Chicken and Waffles, not a lot of chicken, a bit overcooked and certainly not what was pictured on their website. Presentation lacking. Good and friendly service. Probably wouldn't eat there again. PS: Don't eat at the Brutal Poodle unless you enjoy death metal as dinner music.

Yelp
Came here for lunch on a Monday with some co-workers. It's located off the main road and parking can be a bit of a hassle. The inside has A LOT going on (lots of decor, movies playing on tvs, metal music). The bar is to the left and the "dining room" is to the right. We sat in the dining room and were greeted by the same gal who sat us. The menu is full with options and a few unique things too (ie. pho soup). I went with the burger and fries- basic but satisfying. All in all, the place is stimulating to the eyes & ears and the food is filling (also a little greasy).

Yelp
Absolutely love the name, but it was loud, angsty music, mediocre food and a grunge-tastic vibe. Not really my scene but it definitely was an experience. I think I'll stick to my go-to dive bar spots on south broadway. Can I do like 3.75 starts?

Yelp
Elevated food menu it is- the surf and turf relleno was delicious. the crunchiness of the dish is a nice surprise texture. The jalapeño kick in the chicken and waffle dish is a unique add. Attentive staff and cool vibe in the restaurant section. We went during weekday lunch

Yelp
This is our 1st time visiting. Walking in I immediately felt very comfortable. The atmosphere was live. The service was great and personable, the food was very good and our drinks were perfect
