There is paid street parking available on Gilston Road and surrounding streets, but it is notoriously limited. If you are visiting during peak evening class times, finding a spot can be a struggle, so arriving by public transport (South Kensington or Fulham Broadway) is often a less stressful alternative. Areas for Improvement While the training mats (tatami) are excellent, the facilities—specifically the toilets and changing areas—feel quite outdated. The plumbing and overall aesthetic are showing their age and are in clear need of a refurbishment to match the elite status of the training itself.

I am writing to raise serious concerns following my recent visit to watch my child’s Karate class. Whilst waiting, I observed the session and was deeply unsettled by several issues. Firstly, the teacher (the one who appeared to be Japanese, to be specific in case there are multiple instructors) repeatedly ridiculed both children and adults in the class. I noticed he singled out my child in particular. This was very discouraging and visibly affected her performance—when she made mistakes, instead of support, she was ridiculed further. At one point, the teacher even appeared visibly angry at her. Such behaviour is inappropriate, demoralizing, and not conducive to a healthy learning environment. Secondly, I was disturbed to hear the teacher make repeated sexual innuendo jokes. This is entirely unacceptable in a class and creates an unsafe atmosphere for both children and adults. Thirdly, I have serious concerns about health and safety. During the session, another participant (a man who appeared to be Indian, to help you identify him as there were several people present) was physically aggressive towards others. He deliberately tried to hurt people and even kicked a lady so hard that she winced in pain. This happened not far from the teacher, who saw the incident but did nothing to intervene. Karate, when taught responsibly, can be a positive, empowering, and safe activity for children and adults alike. However, what I observed in this class was not safe, not respectful, and not acceptable. The practices I witnessed fall short of the standards of duty of care one would reasonably expect. I urge you to review the conduct of this class, address the issues raised, and ensure that all instructors provide a safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment. If such matters are left unaddressed, they could draw the attention of safeguarding authorities.

I'm taking part in their Tuesday ABC (adult beginner course) in Judo. Registering was very easy and the Budokwai admin office staff responded to any questions quickly and were helpful. The actual course is really good for adult novices: there are a variety of other students of all ages and the instructor is patient and is a great teacher. I thoroughly recommend this school from what I have seen so far.

In 1957 to 59 my dad from France used to train there with misters Legett and Coisumi and the english team which were European champions at the time. He keeps a fond memories of his time in this Judo Club. My dad Jean Hocdé still teaches judo near paris at the age of 86.

Good Karate classes but they care too much about money. The visitor will pay more for a Karate class than for any other class in this dojo. The annual membership is also higher for Karate than for other disciplines staying at 80£ and then 7.50£ per visit. If you come from another Karate they will expect you to start as a white belt and DO AND PAY for ALL the exams, which is very expensive in my opinion and shows little respect to the students.
