The Best Restaurants in and Around Yellowstone National Park | Eater

"In case you didn’t see enough wildlife in the park, the Buffalo Bar delivers on its namesake with hulking taxidermy decor and a menu to match. There’s buffalo in the tacos, burritos, chili, meatballs, and meatloaf. The convivial lounge is anchored by a central bar and casino machines, and there’s a pool table and dart board. To drink, the bar has a broad selection of local beers and a whiskey-centric drink list, including pours from nearby distilleries like Wyoming Whiskey." - Matt Kirouac

A required wait is usually and good sign! Time to stroll around the shops while waiting for the text to say our table was ready. The place was buzzing with activity, servers were working at pace but still cheery and friendly. Menu had so many options it was hard to choose just one dish for breakfast! Food was delicious and the coffee kept flowing. So good we travelled again from Hungry Horse en route to the airport for a last breakfast! Definitely a ‘worth a detour’ kind of place🥰

Google
Food was great and atmosphere was fun. The place was decorated for Halloween and was much appreciated! My only down side is this place gets crowded quick, most likely due to the fantastic food!!! 10 out of 10, would eat again. PS Try the cheese curds, they are amazing!

Google
A very cool bar with fun decor. Service was quick and everyone was very attentive and friendly. They have a great selection of beers and a surprisingly vast food menu. The place was quite busy even on a Tuesday night but we were able to get a table right away. We had hoped to play trivia but apparently they've been too busy lately to be able to host it. What a terrible problem to have! Anyway, highly recommend this spot. If I'm ever this way again, would definitely go back

Google
There’s not a lot of food options near Yellowstone, so this tends to be one of the more popular spots. It definitely has a very specific Americana vibe, complete with a casino section and taxidermied animal everywhere - not really my vibe after a beautiful day of exploring Yellowstone, but I guess it comes with the territory. The food is mostly standard American fare, specializing in bison/buffalo. We got the bison meatloaf and the mountain fries, which were decent but nothing stood out other than the huge portions. The huckleberry lemonade was mediocre and has a strange aftertaste. Overall, good to get filled up here but I would temper expectations. The service was friendly and attentive though.

Google
Great Pub and Restaurant! Whether you are in a mood for steak, Bison, Elk, or just a beer with some appetizers...this place has everything. Excellent service and greatly recommend their ribeye steak with a local IPA.

Google
Great food and service. Friendly folks and a great place to watch college football. The pot roast sandwich was to die for. The tacos were also good. Foot came out fast and hot. Wanted the spicy dog but they were out. Good thing, because my sandwich rocked.

Google
This is where the locals tell you to grab an amazing burger. I've had the bison version on separate occasions. Latest was the West Tex and I took half of it and fries on the road home. Good selection of local brews, and fits right in with the western frontier ambiance you went all the way to West Yellowstone to find. Go between 2-3 pm on a weekday and you should be able to get a table, no wait.

Google
We had a great experience here during our West Yellowstone trip. The mountain fries are so good! The service was great. This place has a great vibe that ties in with the local aesthetic. The food portion sizes were huge. Lots of flavor!

Annie K.

Yelp
Our server was BRI, she was AMAZING! the atmosphere, the food was hands down amazing, the service was the best part. Everyone in our party ordered different appetizers & meals, it was unspeakably good. Thank you Bri, for the amazing experience!

Yelp
The service was amazing ! Great selection of non alcoholic beers ! our waitress went above and beyond to accommodates our food allergies . Dirty glasses and plates were gone n seconds the staff never stood still , they were serving guests! Great experience !

Yelp
After an incredibly long day in the park, my husband and I stopped here around 430pm for an early dinner - we really had our pick of the place and were quickly waited on. First, the portions here are absolutely massive. We split the queso with buffalo chili, which was delicious. I had one of their burritos and it was truly massive...but it really was quite tasty. I wish I could have eaten more of it - but could only eat half since it was so large. My husband opted for one of their burgers - trading the patty for a buffalo patty; he finished every bite of it. Overall, it was an eclectic menu - but good good for a sports bar.

Yelp
Despite a steady stream of patrons, which is usually a good indicator for a restaurant, no one in our group of four adults enjoyed our food. They were edible, but not good enough to bring us back. There were several TVs and the NBA playoff game drew plenty of attention. We got pictures next to the stuffed bisons. The server was fun and competent.
google avatar

Yelp
Such a cool place to get some food and a beer. Very busy but still had great service seated at the bar. Wings were good, buffalo gorditas were good as well. My wife's taco salad was ok. I would have liked to try one of the entrees but wasn't hungry enough for a big meal. Very noisy because it was packed at the rush, but still could talk to each other and not have to yell.
google avatar

Steve H.

Yelp
Once again, had a great meal (burgers for three) and some specialty drinks to celebrate a birthday. All had been excellent. Sat in the rear patio area. Our server was doing double duty and tending bar in back; she was excellent and kept checking in with us. Always enjoy coming to the Buff Bar!
google avatar

Jessica N.

Yelp
The ambience is very lively and fun. This is a good place for a drink, however the food itself is terrible. This was our worst meal of the trip. Not only was it expensive, but the taste and quality was so bad. The burger was extremely dry, I could barely swallow it. The ribeye was very chewy, a bad cut of meat. The mashed potatoes tasted like from a box. The best part of the meal were the french fries and the garlic toast. I would not recommend eating here. The photos look a lot better than how it tastes.
google avatar

Yelp
Open late, even on a holiday. Great food and super attentive servers. The West-Mex Burger was outstanding with the chipotle sauce stealing the show. My wife had the Chicken Tacos and was super happy with them. This is an excellent stop and not so much of a tourist trap. Loads of table seating that is set up for groups or just couples. It does get a bit loud when it's full up but it is really good. Pricing is a bit on the higher side, but expected in this area.

Janice M.

Yelp
Best food in West Yellowstone. Great atmosphere with college football on every tv on Saturday afternoon. Service was very good. Food came quickly. Waitress refilled drinks without asking and brought check when we were done. Chicken/bacon/cheese sandwich was excellent! So were the fries. Husband got burger which was okay. Better than anything else in west Yellowstone. I would go back.

Yelp
We stopped into what we thought was a little sport's bar in West Yellowstone. It turned out to be so so much more. The place turned out to be huge, with really good staff, above average menu, and a good selection of drinks. We were just looking for an appetizer to hold us over till dinner so we ordered the 'Hog Trough Nachos' to share. From the time we ordered to being served was amazingly quick, and we both thought this was one of the best nachos we've had. They serving was huge and we actually took some home. Talked to a few people there, and everything from hamburgers, burritos to tacos were enjoyed. I would totally enjoy going back.
google avatar

Yelp
This is definitely an outdoorsy feel and hearty food. If you want bison, this is the place. Exactly what we were looking for. Not high end and not low end atmosphere, Somewhere in the middle. Fun rugged atmosphere. The buffalo Burger was amazing!

D. Y.

Yelp
Buffalo Bar was great. We liked it so much we visited it twice in 3 days. The service is very friendly & good. They have live music on the patio bar. We chose sitting out under the covered patio. Their menu has everything. And very large servings. Cocktails are also a plus as I wanted an Old Fashioned after a long day of hiking. Not sure why it's called the Buffalo Bar when Bison are roaming in the park but it was delicious. Try it, you will like it!

Yelp
Outstanding food, service and vibe. Great place to go hangout and watch sports or just to chill and relax. Drinks have a good pour. Bartenders are friendly . Good prices and large portions. Cool decor. Fresh food!!! The brussel sprout appetizer. Highly recommend.

Yelp
We came for Yellowstone park at the, definitely not the food . It was ok , wife had a burger it was good , I got the chicken fried bison it was good, but a little over cooked & tough , also no veggies what so ever . Not many places in town so again it OK . Service was also OK , the girl helping us seemed a little put out .

Rhea A.

Yelp
The server was kind and friendly, and I liked the casual atmosphere. And the food was delicious! We had the Brussels sprout chips, beer battered Cheese curds, buffalo Meatloaf, and 16 Oz buffalo ribeye. The brussel sprout chips were delicious! Crispy and light. I loved how the cheese curds were cut into squares so there was an equal amount of melty cheese. Best curds I've had. I never had meatloaf before, and I'm glad I tried it out. The garlic cheese and demi glace made it so flavorful. The sauce was used on the mashed potatoes and it was delicious. The person who ordered the ribeye steak said it was the highlight of his trip. The nachos were also pretty good, but we ordered too much at this point and could barely eat it. One of us had the Cowboy Burger. She liked it but she ordered the burger well done. It was her first time ordering a burger like this, so she simply made a mistake. Really great establishment! Wish I could return.

Yelp
Beer and cocktail selections are great, the patio is pet friendly and perfect for a nice day. The food is good but inconsistent. I had the carne asada bowl and loved it, husband had a bison bbq burger and the burger was well done and chewy with an overly toasted bun, so that was a bummer. French fries are the good thick kind that are crunch so that was yummy too. Service was great and treated us like gold. Would come back and try other things on the menu!
google avatar

Diana C.

Yelp
The name says it all, they do offer bison meat. The service was great. The atmosphere was like a sports bar with the family. Decorations was mounted heads, which the name says it all. Great place.
google avatar

Tom B.

Yelp
Not sure how this place gets 4 stars. Ok, the wife's bison ribeye was tasty and cooked properly but at $48 it had better be good. I had a beef burger figuring burgers were their thing. Boy was I wrong. Ordered the cowboy beef burger medium rare. It came medium well, very dry and tasteless. I ate about 1/4 of the burger, if that and had to eat part of my wife's dinner to fill up. I left disappointed and unsatisfied. I will not return on my next visit to West Yellowstone. If you're a foodie and like tasty burgers try someplace else you won't find it here.

Yelp
Casual bar in West Yellowstone. Nice stop after a long day in Yellowstone. The theme is Buffalo and it's amazing bf to see the size of bison up close and personal. The food was good. Some typical bar food. A lot of bison food so you can't go wrong! The huckleberry lemonade was very good and I recommend it! Our waiter recommended the bison sliders and they were excellent! My husband had the bison fried steak and said it was a little chewy for his liking. The mashed potatoes were good!
google avatar

Ashley L.

Yelp
We had cheese curds and the burrito rojo- both were great. Cheese curds were square with good pull. We went late at night and it was still busy so service was slower. Loved all the mounts inside
google avatar

Robert G.

Yelp
Awesome atmosphere right outside the park! Quick service for some hungry hikers. The food was also amazing and huge portions. 10/10
google avatar

Yelp
What a great find, yet again, in West Yellowstone. This place was where I chose so that my wife could have a nice steak. But before that, we had some of the most delicious chicken wings I have ever had the pleasure to sample. I am becoming a huge fan of huckleberry flavor, the more I am here in the. West. These wings with huckleberry bbq sauce are a taste sensation. Then my wife enjoyed the ribeye, while I had the buffalo meatloaf, both of which served with the red skin mashed potatoes. The steak was not the finest cut (a little stringy in spots with veins) but the flavor was good. The meatloaf is a winner and the garlic toast is a nice touch. Little things make this place a real winner. The ranch and fresh nachos. And the service is ex-cell-ent. So glad we found this place in our two days here.
google avatar

Matt K.

Yelp
As many may think it's not family friendly as a sports bar type place they truly made my 12-year-old and nine-year-old love the place. The staff was very courteous and interacted with them. The food was amazing. My kids wanted to go there the next night why my wife and I really enjoyed the cocktails. Next time we come to West Yellowstone, we look forward to going to the Buffalo again.
google avatar

Yelp
Pick-up order. Pot roast sandwich was a large serving, but was a bit bland and definitely too pricey. Husband got the Old Faithful sandwich and liked it. We all really liked the Brussel chips, even our small child. Although our meal was pretty pricey, it worked in a pinch when we got into Yellowstone as they are open late night.
google avatar

Yelp
TLDR : Good food, quick service and wonderful ambiance Visited the Buffalo Bar while in West Yellowstone after a day at the Yellowstone. It serves as a nice joint for winding down after a busy day. When we arrived (around 7 pm) we were promptly seated and were served quickly. Loved the Bison meat balls!

Keola C.

Yelp
Food was excellent, came in hungry visiting from Hawai'i. Service was mediocre. The host who sat us our table was nice , but our server was bad. No sense of personality or service to make the experience a little personal. We got recommended the spot by another local. I don't remember the servers name but it was middle aged white lady. Our bill was $84.09 AND I tipped $11 in cash tip at the table I left despite the service. My card was charged a few days later at $114.09! I wrote $0.00 with a line slashed on the tip on my card and I was still upcharged an additional $30 for what?! I work in the service industry myself and never experienced that before on being up charged lol. Quite diabolical in my opinion. Food was great but if you have the same server I did , bad vibes.
google avatar

Joyce T.

Yelp
What an amazing restaurant! The service, food and outside courtyard were top notch! The Bacon Jam Burger and Steak Rojos were tender and delicious! Service was fast and given with a smile!
google avatar

Randy P.

Yelp
Food is good here the Bison burger and chili were delicious. Wings are meaty and nachos were good too. Great selection of beers and a full bar. Draw back was the service. It wasn't necessary bad but our waitress was taking care of tables and the back of the bar. They had plenty of servers to wait tables and keep one person behind the bar! I definitely recommend this place!
google avatar

Chris G.

Yelp
Anniversary Yellowstone trip and started on the West side aka the best side. Rolled into the Buffalo Bar recommended by my wife. Mrs G. was right! Great place, amazing animal mounts and even better food. I ordered up the Cowboy burger with Bison. So worth the upcharge and the fries were delicious. Bison is very underrated, if I could eat it daily I would. Also the chili is some of the best in the Mountain West! Scored a sweet short sleeve T shirt as they have swag on scene and I'll rep this place no doubt. Perfect start to a Yellowstone Park adventure. 5 stars.

Marissa K.

Yelp
First time visiting and it couldn't have been better! The menu has something for everyone, and every dish we tried was delicious. The whole place has such a welcoming Montana vibe that really adds to the experience. Drinks were spot-on, and the service was outstanding, both friendly and attentive, made us feel right at home. Highly recommend stopping in if you're in town, you won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Whisper W.

Yelp
10/10 for service and food. We sat at the bar and ordered a Huckleberry Lemonade. It wasn't sweet and they used Huckleberry puree. 8/10 We ordered and split the salad and buffalo chili combo and the Bison Ribeye. The chili was a 7/10 and the salad was really good! They put French fried onions on it - never had it with that before. The Bison Ribeye was a 10/10 and the loaded mashed potatoes were the best I've ever had. They put an infused butter on the ribeye and it just puts it up there with one of the best steaks I've ever had. I highly recommend you try this restaurant!
google avatar

Yelp
Buffalo Bar is everything you want after a long day exploring Yellowstone rustic charm, delicious food, and the friendliest staff you'll ever meet. The bison burger was absolutely legendary juicy, perfectly seasoned, and stacked just right. Their local brews and cocktails hit the spot, and the atmosphere is pure Montana: laid-back, lively, and authentic. Whether you're here for a quick drink, a family meal, or to soak in the local vibe, Buffalo Bar delivers. Even the decor tells a story part saloon, part cozy lodge, all awesome. Can't recommend it enough. This place captures the spirit of the West in every bite and sip.

Yelp
cute spot outside yellowstone, we were able to get a table outside where there was great live music and a nice bar. favorites were the roasted brussels sprouts and the bison steak. great drinks too, i loved the smoking old fashioned. restaurant was definitely on the chiller side, waitress only came around when she needed to and wasn't hovering which i appreciate.

Randy H.

Yelp
The best "Buffalo Balls" ever. It's an appetizer but order it with a (fantastic) side salad and you will have a great meal.
google avatar

Susanna D.

Yelp
Classic American food. It was a nice meal. A better version of a Chili's or Applebees. With the limited options of West Yellowstone the place is a good option after a long day in the park.
google avatar

Amy N.

Yelp
If you are in West Yellowstone you have to visit the Buffalo Bar for great food and drinks. I got the bison meatloaf, my husband got the buffalo ribeye and my friend got the pot roast. Everyone loved their dish and everything was cooked perfectly. The service was friendly and everything came out quickly. The ambiance was great! There was a musician singing and playing guitar on the patio outside. You can bring your dog on the patio too. Lots of animal heads mounted inside and couple full sized bisons. They also have casino machines there.

Yelp
Went here two days in a row while visiting Yellowstone. You don't expect to find good restaurants at a touristy area but this place was really good. They were always busy but managed to seat 4 of us in a short time. Portions were generous and food was quite yummy! Definitely recommend two appetizers, Hog nachos and Thai shrimp with sweet chili sauce. Really, really yummy!!! For our dinners, over two days, we had fried cod tacos, steak fajita, bbq chicken salad, pulled pork burger, chicken tacos, and fish n chips. All solid. Fries were the best....so crispy and hot!! Service was excellent and we were just very happy to eat here as this restaurant had everything that you can expect of a good restaurant!
google avatar

Frankie X.

Yelp
we stopped by the buffalo spot in yellowstone for dinner and ordered the sriracha burger with buffalo (it's an extra $5 to upgrade from beef) and the pork sirloin. it was my first time trying buffalo and it was pretty good--leaner than beef but not as flavorful. honestly, not sure i'd get it again because of the extra cost. the fries with the burger were fire though! the pork sirloin was alright but kinda salty for me. the mashed potatoes were really good though. the staff was super nice, and even though they were busy, we only waited about 20 minutes after getting on the waitlist. pretty solid dinner spot overall!

Huy Jenie N.

Yelp
Great vibe and excellent staffs. Friendly and the food is great. Our family really enjoy it
google avatar

Lauren T.

Yelp
While the drinks were good, the food wasn't my cup of tea. The wait staff was incredibly friendly but the buffalo salad I had just had a bit too much sauce. Not negative - just my preference.
google avatar

Bradley P.

Yelp
We were driving all around West Yellowstone trying to come up with a place to grab some dinner and one of our boys had seen this place while we were looking around so we decided to give it a try! We all rated our meals a 10! We were seated out on a deck area that was pretty cool with live music. Our server was on top of things as well. The food did take a little while, but we were enjoying ourselves enough it didn't matter too much. I got the bison meatloaf meal, which was amazing! One of my boys got the Cowboy Burger with a regular beef patty, my mom got a fried bison steak meal, and my wife got a chicken salad. They were all great!
google avatar

Angela C.

Yelp
They charge an extra 3% Convenience Fee. They also seem to upcharge for every little thing which makes your meal super expensive for what it is. Our 2 adult, 1 two-year old meal ended up costing $80 bucks. The food was okay, the service was good but the higher prices and upcharging for every little thing made the experience unpleasant. Kids Meal is a total rip off. It's more expensive than Disney World. I was surprised at the Kids Meal. We got the chicken nuggets ... reminded me of the Chik-Fil-A nuggets but $17, didn't come with French Fries or sauce. They charge $1 for a side of sauce. I don't recommend coming here because of their prices.
google avatar

Nikita S.

Yelp
Celebrated my birthday with beers and wings. The beer, a Hazy IPA, was fantastic--tasty and perfectly buzz-inducing. Initially, the wings didn't look appetizing, but their taste proved otherwise. A reminder not to judge a book by its cover!
google avatar

Suhk M.

Yelp
Best place to eat at if you're at Yellowstone National Park. Food, service and vibe to the place are great! The servers there are very professional, attentive and friendly! The buffalo wings are the best wings I've had
google avatar

Fernando A.

Yelp
We had a good dinner here after a day of hiking and sightseeing. I had the Buffalo meatloaf, just 'cause, and it was pretty good. I think I need to remind myself that bison is a leaner meat than beef and tends to be dry. The brown gravy, bleu cheese, and scallions helped though, and it was pretty tasty overall. My wife had salmon tacos that she liked, and we both loved the deep fried brussel sprout chips. Buffalo Bar did us well and I'd recommend it to anyone costuming Yellowstone.
google avatar

Jessica P.

Yelp
After a 35 minute wait late on a Thursday night we were seated at a small table for 5 people. We ordered drinks from the extensive menu and the huckleberry lemonade was decent. Maybe could have been a little stronger because it just tasted like lemonade. The chili was tasty (but a small portion), but the salad more than made up for it. The nachos and buff bites were also plentiful. The meatloaf was cold, but we didn't bother sending it back as we had waited so long to eat. Decent service as they were slammed. I only wish the tables were a bit larger, but overall it was a great meal.

Jay C.

Yelp
Had dinner at The Buffalo Bar two nights ago. Food was very good, I had the Buffalo steak. Service was awesome. Restaurant had a bar and plenty of seating with lots of cool animals on the wall.
google avatar

Rosanna B.

Yelp
Danielle was an amazing person to have at our table! Made the best recommendations for my whole family, I personally loved the Huckleberry Margarita and upgraded it to have patron silver. She recommended the cowboy burger but since I don't do Swiss cheese, I substituted for American cheese. Kids loved the grilled cheese and quesadilla and my husband had the fried Bison and he loved it! Good beer, good food, and friendly environment and service. Just come here and bring the family!

Yelp
After a long day at Yellowstone National Park, we decide to have dinner at this place since it's just outside the park. Well, the place packed! Therefore, something must be real good in there. After looking around for a place to sit (self seating), we almost left to find somewhere else to dine, but as fate would have it, a table became available as we were passing by. I'm so glad we stayed because the food was delicious, our server was pleasant, attentive and organized, despite of the crowds. If it's busy and you have the patience to wait, it's so worth it. Stay and enjoy!
