Best-Value Restaurants in Central London | Cheap, but Not ‘Cheap Eats’ - Eater London

"Bugis Street Brasserie may be the furthest lengths someone has gone to get a decent bowl of chicken rice outside Singapore. Although well reviewed by Jay Rayner, he did miss a trick that Bugis Street specialises in the most austere of all deeply pleasurable foods: Hainanese chicken rice. Here, all is correct, a comfortingly salty bowl of broth; rice glistening with lip-smacking fat; and a well poached chicken, cream on cream, with colour only interrupting in the form of ginger, chilli and soy condiments. From the rest of the menu the laksa, Nyonya style, is also a winner; a balanced broth that never becomes too intense, with bouncy fishcakes and prawns heated in the broth just to the point of cooked." - Jonathan Nunn

As an Asian living in London I’ve found that if a an Asian restaurant does not have unanimous 5 star reviews then that means they’re doing something incredibly right. Had a very satisfying meal and service was top notch as always. Sometimes it’s not the message, but the messenger.

Still the best har gau in the area and very good other offerings. The beef chow fun is worth ordering every time. I hadn't been in a bit and was delighted to see the food has maintained or even improved its already excellent quality. I would give five stars, but bar noise does travel into the dining room; if wanting a quieter meal, ask to be sat deeper into the dining room.

Choosing this restaurant near our hotel turned out to be a brilliant decision after canceling our reservation elsewhere. Not only did we savor authentic Singaporean cuisine for the first time, but the dishes were also incredibly flavorful. The service, while decent, had room for improvement in terms of attentiveness. Portion sizes were generous; sharing two substantial dishes among four would have sufficed. Despite the hefty bill, it was justified by the satisfying fullness it provided for the entire night. A solid 10/10 recommendation, especially if you find yourself in the Kensington area.

Not the best, but still okay if you’re craving Hainan chicken rice. I didn’t like the soy sauce, though. It tasted like burnt brown-sugar-flavoured soy sauce, and the chilli sauce wasn’t spicy at all.

Style Over Substance at The Bugis The Bugis Singapore Restaurant, located inside the elegant Bailey’s Hotel in South Kensington, sets high expectations with its beautiful interior and refined ambiance. However, both the food and service fell short. We ordered the Hainanese Chicken Rice, which was reasonably priced but ultimately quite average. The sauces were authentic, and I appreciated that the meal came with a nicely prepared soup. However, the main component — the chicken — was underwhelming. One plate came with breast meat, the other with thighs and drumstick. Fortunately, we had both ordered the same dish and were able to share, as we both prefer leg meat. If we hadn’t, one of us would have ended up with a portion we didn’t enjoy as much. It would have been better had we been asked for our preference or offered a more balanced mix on each plate. The chicken portion itself was small, especially compared to the generous serving of rice, and the presentation lacked polish. Service was the most disappointing part of the visit. One of the waiters was clearly new and being trained during service, while the more senior staff member focused heavily on instructing him. Rather than doing this discreetly, the guidance was given in full view of guests and in a way that didn’t come across as especially courteous. When the senior waiter brought our soup — one bowl in each hand — he was still mid-instruction and not paying full attention, which resulted in the soup spilling into the underplates. He placed the bowls down without acknowledging the spill or addressing us directly, which added to the sense that guests weren’t the priority. The restaurant itself is beautiful and has real potential, but the experience didn’t reflect the elegance of the setting. With more attentive service and refinement in food quality and presentation, it could offer much more than it currently delivers.

This is the newly refurbished Bugis and we used to be quite big fans of the old less posh looking restaurant. The new one looks too fancy, prices are higher but the food is still excellent in my opinion. I’d highly recommend the crunchy tofu for starters and the aubergine for main. Note that portions are really huge, we were surprised at how generous they were. Overall we paid £175 for four with no drinks.

We had a late lunch there. Great service, but food is just ok. Only the foreigner will like it. Laksa - very small portion at a £23, taste is so-so Hanianese chicken rice - rice got the color but no flavor, chicken is acceptable. Bak Kut Teh 肉骨茶 - this one is a good one, especially in winter. When we saw the receipt, we pretty surprised there is a 20% for UK VAT on the bill. Wondering is it a norm in UK for all restaurants 🤔 ?

Very nice Asian restaurant with a lovely decor. Servicecvery attentive, but kitchen timings a little off. Good prices for London. Note, it's inside a hotel.
