"Though the French Broad River flooded the Bull and Beggar during Tropical Storm Helene, the River Arts District landmark managed to reopen its iconic high-ceilinged, wood-and-brick dining room at the end of January after major renovations. Chef/co-owner Matthew Dawes is back in the game, serving his locally loved menu full of French favorites, including the popular steak frites with sauce au poivre, as well as options such as escargot a la bourguignon, cote du boeuf, and onion soup gratinée." - Gina Smith

The menu changes frequently, which is a good thing. I had the 10 oz onglet, a hanger steak it came with fries there was no option for a side salad. The cheapest salad was $14. And there were no vegetable sides you could have gotten without spending $19 or $20, which I find ridiculous. The steak was not seasoned well to my taste. They maybe threw a little salt and pepper on it or something, but it was really just meat with very little seasoning. I had two pieces of steak. I ate one of them which was okay. It really desperately needed more seasoning or some sauce or something. But of course, if you fancy yourself a fancy restaurant, you don't have sauces. I took the other half of the steak home to my regret. It was really a bad piece of meat and I will include pictures. Also had the oysters on a half shell. They were delicious, small Eastern type. I would be really careful going there. Maybe look at something other than the steaks. The interior was really done nicely. And the bar area was filled with people eating oysters on the half shell. It was a half price night on oysters. I would go back, but I would certainly find a dish that came with a little potato or rice, green bean, something to make a more rounded meal. If you're spending that much money, you might as well have a full meal.

I came here with my wife for my birthday. We had a reservation so we arrived and got seated immediately. The initial service took a few minutes and the service in general was sporadic. The food took a long time to come out which may have been due to the size of the steak and it was close to closing time. I’d recommend coming a few hours before closing hours. Speaking of the food, the flavors were all very good, although the steak came out medium when we ordered medium rare. They were able to compensate us for the error which was fine. The steak for two on the menu did not have fries but the waiter was able to talk with the chef and make the substitution happen which we were thankful for. We will consider coming here again.

Our friends took us here for dinner our first night in Asheville! The inside of the restaurant is beautiful. Love all the exposed brick. Our serve was super friendly and gave us recommendations. We started with oysters and tapenade. I had the GNOCCHI ALLA ROMANO. It was very different but in a good way, lots of fresh veggies included which were so yum! It was my birthday weekend so they gave me a dessert which was a type of fruit pie with cream. I absolutely would love to come back and try other menu items!

Another absolutely divine dinner from The Bull and Beggar last night! We spent the day at Shoji Spa and Lodge for our valentines celebration and after a perfect spa day we wanted a fantastic dinner but hadn’t made a reservation. It was 8:30 at this time and many places around town close at 9. We haven’t been back to Bull and Beggar since the storm and I’ve been dying to return so we stopped by to see if they could squeeze us in (they close at 10). Despite being fully booked with reservations they were able to squeeze us in! So grateful! Every single dish was better than the last. 10/10 as always. The star of the show was the beef tar tar. Its perfect. Their oysters are always fresh and clean. The anchovy butter toast was salty and decadent. The raw scallop crudo was beautifully presented, bold, and unique. The baked cabbage with Calabrian chili and truffle butter was a warm delight. The sticky toffee pudding was salty, rich, sweet, and the perfect dessert. Love this place. 🐂🩷

My filet was good and cooked medium rare like i asked thank god. But the sauce it was on top of tasted almost like a sweet(ish) curry. Did not go good together in my opinion. I asked for A1 sauce at that point which they didn't have. That's fine, wasn't really expecting it but would have been nice. Good steak shouldn't need any sauce anyway but this one did. They mentioned they had horseradish sauce but it was literally just horseradish, no sauce. I do wish they allowed substitutions for sides. I ended up paying for creamed spinach due to that which was just ok. We got oysters and the ones from the East coast were worth it for sure. My boyfriend got some kind of curry meat pie? He said it was ok but not much flavor. Looked aesthetically pleasing but I don't think i would come back. Not worth the prices at all for what you get and we have experience with eating out.

This was the best meal and service we have had in a long time. The ribeye for two was not only beautiful but the taste was out of this world. The sticky toffee pudding was the best dessert I have ever eaten. Robin was such a great server and attended to our every need. We will gladly be back.

We came tonight to celebrate my birthday and it was awesome! Wonderful food, seasoned to perfection and executed with refinement. I couldn’t have asked for more. Service and wine also amazing, we’re definitely coming back again to try the steak and some seafood! It’s been a while I’ve had a perfect night of culinary experience. It’s not cheap (ca. $400 for two with tip) but it’s it’s worth it!

My boss took us out for a nice office dinner one night during the Southern Conference Basketball Tournament. It was very nice, but super expensive (not that I had to pay) and took forever. We were there over three hours. I guess if that's the mood you're in for, it's a good place, but another guy and I had a lot of work left to do for the day. My meal was good, the cabbage and citrus beet salad much better than the fish, though! I had never had cabbage cooked like that or beets and whipped feta either, but it was tasty!
