Mystery and Legend at the Burman Hotel, the Best New Hotel of 2025

"Anchored in Tallinn’s Old Town amid legends of the devil’s wedding, a mermaid’s well, and Michel Sittow’s nearby home, this 17‑room hideaway — winner of MICHELIN Inspectors’ 2025 Opening of the Year Award — marries painstaking historic restoration with unapologetic luxury and an intimate adjoining casino. First opened in 1850 and among the city’s oldest hotels, it was revived after a 2021 closure to reveal what might be the most luxe hotel in the Baltics, preserving Karl Burman’s 1930 innovations (asymmetrical balconies, varied window boxes), the curved lobby staircase with its elegant wooden handrail, and century‑old Estonian parquet in select Heritage Suites. Comforts are extravagant: access to a private jet for shopping trips in European capitals, hyperluxurious Amouage bath products, Paris‑handcrafted Orient Express–grade mattresses, a pillow menu ranging from down to buckwheat, and bathrooms MICHELIN Inspectors called “stunning,” with spacious showers and electronic bidets. The minimalist subterranean spa offers a 43°C Japanese pool, hydromassage Jacuzzi, deep‑tissue treatments, and Biologique Recherche therapies. Service suits the scale — staff remember your name and coffee order, handwritten welcome notes and daily weather forecasts appear with charming regularity — and dining includes two MICHELIN‑recommended restaurants, Shang Shi and Koyo, plus Maison Francois, an on‑site Belgian bakery. Steps from the Town Hall, the Niguliste Church Museum, and sweeping viewpoints, it’s both a polished launchpad and a destination in itself; couples should consider the top‑floor Kellalac Heritage Suite with its larger bathtub, bedroom, and separate living room. Ultimately, it’s a luxe gem that’s more affordable than almost any comparable Two‑Key hotel in the world and should put Tallinn on everyone’s radar." - The MICHELIN Guide

The First MICHELIN Key Hotels in the Baltic Countries

"Winner of the MICHELIN Special Award for Best New Hotel 2025 and awarded Two MICHELIN Keys, this 17-room boutique sits at the heart of Tallinn’s UNESCO-listed Old Town and delivers a level of quiet luxury that belies its boutique scale. Housed within the Bombay Club casino complex but far from garish, it pairs glossy, sophisticated interiors—blonde, pastel and scarlet palettes—with high-spec touches such as Amouage toiletries, bespoke Treca Vienne‑Venise mattresses and marble bathrooms; guests also have access to a swish spa, three restaurants (including Cantonese Shang Shi and Japanese Koyo), a bakery and a boutique-sized casino and club. The rooms feel super-luxe without being flashy, the price point is described as very accessible, and the overall vibe is an elevated, contemporary take on Old Town glamour." - The MICHELIN Guide Nordic Editorial Team

And the Winners Are: Four Standout Hotels Take Home MICHELIN’s Latest Special Category Awards

"Nestled in Tallinn’s UNESCO-recognized Old Town, I experienced The Burman Hotel as a 17-room boutique that delivers on the scale of a much larger hotel and serves as a center for dining and entertainment in the heart of the city." - The MICHELIN Guide

The Burman Hotel (Tallinn, Estonia) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"The Burman has existed in one form or another for over 150 years, but not like this. Today, thoroughly renovated, it’s part of the Bombay Club, a high-end, boutique-sized casino complex in the heart of Tallinn’s Old Town, complete with gaming salons, performance spaces, restaurants, and, in the Burman, a 17-room luxury boutique hotel." - Tablet Hotels

Stopped by the hotel bar for cocktail after dinner at a nearby restaurant and the experience was nothing short of exceptional. The venue itself is stunningly beautiful but it was the bartender that made the experience outstanding. He was friendly, highly professional and clearly highly trained after just 7 years in the job. Nothing was too much trouble and both my old fashioned and my husband's Moscow mule were excellent. I would highly recommend the bar and we will definitely be staying at this hotel next time we are in Tallinn. He is a credit to the profession and the hotel, they are lucky to have him. My only criticism is that the cocktail list could be a little longer.

I had the good fortune to discover this hotel through American Express Travel, and stayed for eight nights in early September. I've been traveling a lot this year, as a form of respite care, because my elderly Father has dementia and moved in with us last year. I had to resign from my job to help him. To escape occasionally, I've traveled overseas and stayed at various high-priced hotels in Stockholm, Kraków, Copenhagen, and Hawaii, where even the Four Seasons felt impersonal and overcrowded. The Burman was my favorite experience yet, because it is genuinely a small luxury hotel, where everyone knows you by name. From my initial correspondence with Roman from reception to my unexpected arrival in a taxi, because someone else had taken my reserved car, everyone at The Burman was warm, welcoming, and engaging. Marje and Andres, who served breakfast at Écrin, were so nice and friendly, and made my mornings extra special by remembering my preferences and being genuinely good-natured. They have definitely hired the right people to work there and represent The Burman brand. I had so many other great experiences as a guest at The Burman. Even though I was often the only person in the Écrin bar for happy hour, I never felt unwelcome. I was surprised when people would smile at me in passing, because after living in Sweden for two years in my early-twenties, I guess I don't expect warm smiles in Baltic countries. I had a great massage at the spa one day and spent my last full day relaxing in the Japanese bath and enjoying a bubble bath. The spa was quiet and peaceful, and offered the perfect escape before a long and tiresome journey home. The hotel is fantastic on its own, offering spacious and thoughtful rooms and decor, but the food and beverages available at their various in-house establishments are also equally incredible. At Écrin, I ordered the tasting menu one night and the afternoon tea over the weekend. Apart from Rebecca, I don't remember a lot of names, but everyone at Écrin was also very nice. I even got a tour of the kitchen! I dined at Shang Shi as well, and had always meant to go back, but I didn't make it a second time. On another occasion, I enjoyed a 16-course selection at Koyo Omakase, where I had the opportunity to chat with Chef Kazuto Hokari, who was very kind and hospitable to me. I have asked my husband to take me back to Tallinn, and specifically, The Burman, as a combined birthday and Christmas gift. I'd love to see the old town decorated for the holidays, and this hotel is in a prime location for that. Thank you to everyone who made my vacation memorable. We look forward to seeing you again one day soon.

The design of the hotel is exquisite. Every corner feels curated, from the lobby’s understated elegance to the rooms that balance comfort and sophistication. Thoughtful touches—handcrafted furniture, locally inspired artwork, and indulgent amenities—make the space feel less like a hotel and more like a private retreat. In a world of chain hotels, this boutique gem stands as a reminder of what travel should feel like—unique, personal, and memorable. It’s the kind of place you don’t just recommend; you urge people to experience for themselves. Well done to the team for exceptional service too 👏🏻

Charming Boutique Hotel with Style and a relaxing Atmosphere The Burmann Hotel is located right in the heart of Tallinn’s historic Old Town, yet still easily accessible by taxi. From the moment you enter, you feel the attention to detail: the interior is elegantly and tastefully designed, creating a calm and welcoming ambiance. The breakfast was a real highlight – a delightful French-inspired experience. Beautifully presented on a tiered stand, it includes delicious items such as Eggs Benedict, fresh pastries, and other lovingly prepared touches. A perfect start to the day and highly recommended! The spa area is small but refined: two relaxing pools heated to 36 and 42 degrees Celsius, one featuring a jacuzzi function, along with a soothing steam bath. The professional massages are excellent and provide targeted relief for muscle tension – ideal for unwinding after a day in the city. In summary: a stylish and high-quality boutique hotel in a prime location, perfect for a relaxing getaway in Tallinn. I’m already looking forward to my next visit!

A Masterclass in Understated Hospitality. For the discerning traveller who understands that true luxury whispers, it does not shout. Arrival & First Impressions Navigating Tallinn's Old Town by car to reach the hotel is an adventure in itself, one that immediately suggests that arriving without a vehicle is the more elegant choice. For those who do drive, valet service is the recommended path. The alternative involves a rather rugged public parking lot a few minutes' walk away, an experience that stands in stark contrast to the seamless professionalism one encounters at the hotel's actual entrance. Here, a doorman assists with a welcome that is blessedly non-transactional — a clear sign you've arrived somewhere that understands the nuances of high-end service. The lobby impresses not with scale, but with meticulous detail, from the grand staircase to the exquisite, hand-painted wallpaper depicting a world of flora and fauna. The Room: A Study in Details (Room 301) The journey continues with a staff member escorting you to your room for a thoughtful, if slightly amusing, orientation to the room's primary functions — a charming ritual for the seasoned traveller. The room itself is a testament to a renovation where no expense was spared. From the sublime comfort of the bed (a pillow menu is, naturally, available) to the Dyson hairdryer and the heated mirror in the elegant bathroom, every detail speaks of quality. The technology is modern and discreet, with lighting and blinds controlled by a wall-mounted display. The bathroom lighting is intelligently designed for nocturnal visits, avoiding the usual operating-theatre glare, and the Japanese-style toilet is a nod to international standards of comfort. My only query was the towel heater, which remained a mystery. Crucially, my courtyard-facing room was an oasis of absolute silence throughout the night, with no disturbance from housekeeping in the morning. The Breakfast: The Litmus Test of Luxury The breakfast, served in the tranquil ambiance of the Ecrin restaurant, is a blend of a curated buffet and à la carte offerings. The true measure of a hotel's commitment to quality, however, is often found in the simplest things. The freshly-squeezed orange juice at The Burman, for instance, serves as a new benchmark for what this drink can be — a revelatory experience that is shockingly rare. The handmade cappuccino, Eggs Benedict, and pastries were all, unsurprisingly, excellent. And for those who begin their day with bubbles, Champagne is, of course, available. The Spa: A Sanctuary for Quiet Contemplation The beautifully finished spa area offers a serene escape, with small, intimate pools kept at a perfect 34 and 42 degrees, and a steam sauna. This is a space for quiet contemplation, not for lively social gatherings; its tranquility is palpable and, thankfully, respected by the clientele. Even the slippers provided are of a quality that withstands more than a single glance at water. The Verdict The Burman is not a hotel for everyone, and it doesn't try to be. It is an unapologetic investment in quality, detail, and serene comfort. The price point is significant, and justifiably so, as it ensures an experience of exclusivity and peace. This is a haven for the mature, independent hedonist who appreciates meticulous craftsmanship and discreet, intuitive service. If your idea of luxury is a loud party or a bustling lobby, this is not the place for you. But if you understand that the greatest luxury of all is quiet perfection, you have found your new Tallinn address
