"Everyone in town has a favorite barbecue spot, and one that locals can’t stop raving about is the Butt Hutt Smokehouse. While diners can enjoy the staples like pulled pork sandwiches, smoked ribs, or meats by weight, the real star of the menu here is the loaded Florida fries. The state namesake fries are topped with meat, cooked onions and peppers, cheddar cheese sauce, and garlic aioli. No matter what’s ordered, be sure to get a side of the spicy mac and cheese, which is creamy with a nice kick of spice at the end." - Megan duBois

First time going here. We went around 1pm on Wednesday not busy. Sat inside (there is outdoor seating covered and uncovered available), was greeted upon entry, ordered at counter and seat yourself. The staff was friendly, the food came out quickly and tasted fresh. We ordered the platter with ribs, brisket, jerk chicken and pulled pork. The sides we got were mac and cheese and baked beans (I personally wouldn't order either one again) not cause they were bad but they weren't memorable so I would try something new. From the meats: LOVED the jerk chicken and the ribs, the pulled pork was great also the brisket was moist and fatty I prefer more lean so that had it at the bottom for me. The toast was good also. I went there to try it based off a couple Jax eating groups on FB and IG, overall it was good food would definitely try again and try some new things. The pricing seems like you will average twenty to thirty dollars per person.

Great experience here. The people here were nice and inviting. If I could give more than 5 stars 🌟 I would. The food was amazing. I had the Florida fries with the pull pork with extra aoli sauce(the collard greens were great as well). My kids had that tacos/ brisket sandwich and kids grill cheese with fries/ husband had the brisket sandwich with and the jerk wings omg sooo good🤌🏿. If you like spicy food, the wings are perfect for you with the blue cheese... trust me 😋😍.. Great food ❤️ You will definitely get full. Will be back again.

Google
This place is out of hand! The owner is passionate about food and executes on what he is delivering. Incredible flavors and sauces and creative recipes really make this place stand out. But what really blew my mind was that none of that creativity is used to hide bland food. For the purists the brisket is amazing (even with out sauce). I hate restaurants that type fancy menus and item descriptions and give you flavorless food. keep doing what you are doing!!!!

Google
The Good: Friendly service, clean atmosphere, and the loaded curry fries and corn nuggets were solid. When I mentioned the bland mac & cheese, the waitress happily swapped it for corn nuggets, which was a nice touch. The Not-So-Great: Spent $66 on this meal, but the portions felt small for the price. Mac & cheese was watery, cold, and lacked seasoning. Toast was plain, no BBQ sauce on the tables, and the sweet tea wasn’t sweet. Overall: Appreciate the service, but I won’t be returning.

Google
Amazing BBQ so full of flavor! The staff are wonderful too! Don’t judge this place by outside. It looks like a small spot in the middle of a busy road, but it’s packed full of flavor! Both times we have been here the staff gave us a free sample to try. First time they gave us a sample of spicy saugsage and today their home made bacon. Wow!!! So good!

Google
I have lived nearby for forever and have no idea how I haven’t tried it before. They even have their own app! I ordered the Florida Fries and they hit the spot. Good portion, well seasoned, tasty. I picked pork as my meat and it was perfectly cooked with that delicious smoky flavor. My only constructive feedback was that there needs to be more sauce - either some BBQ sauce or more of the garlic aioli. But I’ll definitely be ordering again.

Google
Had some of the best brisket I've ever tasted from this cozy little establishment. I might upset my Mom and some of her kinfolk, God rest their souls, but I think I had the best collard greens I've ever had here. They are all from Macon Georgia and some real good Southern chefs so that is saying a lot. Would highly recommend and will definitely be going back with friends...

Google
Got the Brisket platter mixed lean and fatty. Added ribs. Sides were Mac n Cheese and baked beans. Presentation was amazing. Inhaled the beans they were so good. Ribs were very good. Nice pull and flavor. Mac n cheese was outstanding. Brisket was a perfect mix of lean and fatty but to me lacked a little seasoning. Bark was off the chain but I tried it by itself and had no real seasoning flavor. Overall OUTSTANDING

Yelp
It was so good great brisket and fries are so gooooood. They gave you some stickers that were pretty funny don't show the little ones though

Yelp
This is one of my favorite BBQ spots in Jax. It's not trendy, but it's a cool, local spot that feels nicer than the really casual BBQ chains. The brisket is their most popular meat, which I loved, but I personally like the pulled pork a little more, probably because I like my brisket extra lean (just a personal preference). They have a great array of BBQ sauce options- I always go for the sweeter sauce. And I know it may sound weird, but I LOVE their salad, which I've always gotten as one of my sides. I think it may have chopped jalapeños in it that give it a different kind of taste but with no kick. Honestly, I've always had it without dressing and it really doesn't need it IMO. The fries are awesome too. The service is quick, friendly, and helpful. The spot is really unique, with nice picnic benches for outdoor seating overlooking the colorful cool murals on the outside wall. The inside is really narrow and has limited seats but we haven't had issues getting seated on a non-special event night. They have a few TV's showing sports games and they have several beers by the bottle and on draft.

Yelp
Customer service was great. I ate inside and ordered the brisket platter with Mac & cheese, collard greens and the baked beans. Meat 10/10 (so tender it was breaking on my fork) Mac & Cheese 3/10 (lacked flavor and needs salt/seasoning, but was very cheesy) Collard greens 5/10 (I could taste vinegar , a unique taste that I can't describe) Baked beans 2/10 (had bbq flavor with vinegar, was my least favorite side) Overall I did enjoy the meat and will definitely return and try some other dishes

Stubbs D.

Yelp
We had the brisket which was good but the slaw and baked beans were a def 10. I am not a slaw person but let me tell you. I would give the slaw a 10. What makes this place stand out are their flavors. So unique! Really, really good. We went on a Fri night and they were sold out of the brisket before 6:30. Thank You!

Kevin Jose H.

Yelp
A small shop on an island corner. Parking is sparse. Inside is colorful and cool... until you start eating. We sat in a corner where we hardly got air, especially if you're eating meat with the sweat heat. I was sweating bullets! I absolutely loved the food. Florida fries and Florida boy were both 5/5 but a bit pricy. The platter, we got double brisket and pulled park which was good with the sauce. The garlic bread was okay and the Mac and cheese and baked beans were average. My only gripe is the amount of money for the food that we got. Better than most places, but still. The food took about 10 mins so it was quick service. Really liked this place and will come back again!

Rock A.

Yelp
This place is AMAZING! Not only is the food absolutely amazing but the vibe and staff are top shelf. I love Southern hospitality but I felt like family as soon as I walked through the door. They made sure I sampled every sauce, the burnt ends, and curry fries...just so I had an idea of how delicious everything is. I love this place, instant favorite!

Yelp
The Butt Hutt Smokehouse is a barbecue place with a funky and fun environment to enjoy your meal. On top of that, the service is superb and the food was extremely good. Walking in, I approached the bar and looked at the menu. Most of the items sounded great, but I ended up going with their pulled pork platter and for my sides, I went with their spicy macaroni and cheese and their baked beans. Since it was a beautiful day in Jacksonville, Florida, I opted to grab a table outside. Pretty much in no time flat, my food was brought to me and before selecting my choice of the three barbecue sauces on my table (regular, hot or mustard), I tried all three on a spoon. The hot barbecue sauce was my favorite. This was not much of a surprise as I am a huge fan of hot and spicy food. Everything on my plate was very good. The pork was excellent, as were both sides. The Butt Hutt Smokehouse has a lot going for it and I would definitely recommend a visit here.

Yelp
No complaints about this place! We showed up at the right time because five minutes after we ordered it got super packed and I can see why! Brisket, Mac and Cheese & Slaw was a great combo! It was affordable too. We asked for a mix of fatty and lean brisket. Talk about gooood! The curry fries were great, but there were so many we couldn't tackle them between the three of us (but one was a picky 8 yr old lol). Ambiance was cool for a bbq place during the lunch rush. Buncha dudes in work boots and snap backs inside seating was limited but there is plenty outside seating. It just wasn't available because of the rain. Inside tables were clean, tvs were on, and the service was really good! Self serve fountain drinks. Hmmm... that's it! Glad we stopped by!

Dave F.

Yelp
First time at The Butthut. We had the tacos, brisket and chicken. Brisket was very lean and the chicken was dark meat, which I prefer, however the wife is a white meat girl. Great BbQ choices and the sides were good. I'd have to say they need to add more sides, greens and such. Service was impeccable and the you g lady that took our order was very informative. Thank You

Desmond K.

Yelp
Just moved here from Dallas! First bbq spot I tried. Delicious food and hospitality was amazing. Definitely worth it and will be back!

Terri S.

Yelp
What a great surprise to find this gem, in my own backyard! The Butt Hutt Smokehouse is located in the old island bar on the island at Roosevelt and Plymouth. Some amazing murals surround the place, an amazing patio with umbrellas to help protect from sun, and a great view of the smokers. The place is small but has several tables and bar seating inside and plenty outside. Very friendly and attentive service!!! Checking on all tables frequently. When walk in and you see a wall of Anthony Bourdain....you know you hit the lottery and the food HAS to be good. Order up at the counter by computer or by the host and they bring the food right out. We ordered 2 brisket plates, rib plate, and the burnt ends plate. We had a variety of sides, beans, cole slaw, mac and cheese, greens...all were amazing! But I must say that the cilantro lime cole slaw was the best thing I had all day! YUMMY! The burnt ends were amazing, the ribs were smoky and fell right off the bone, and the brisket was just like butter! We will definitely be back for more delicious food!

Sheila D.

Yelp
We went in a Friday night and the place had plenty of seats available inside and out. Both orders were brisket: one lean and one mixed. The sides were mac and cheese, potato salad, and greens. The meat was tasty and tender. The sides were just barely fair to ok. The Mac and cheese texture was good but it lacked flavor. Pretty much the same for the potato salad. The greens, however had plenty of flavor and a bit over cooked. The greens tasted like they used bbq drippings to cook them with. They had a soft greasy feel and we could see the grease floating in the abundant pot liquor! The waitress wasn't very helpful after telling her it was our first time there, but she look tired. The dinning area wasn't very clean and the a/c didn't cool the dinning area very well. It was a bit too dark for an eating establishment. I didn't check the bathroom which is a major indicator. Probably just as well since we may not have stayed if it looked worse than the dinning area. I might order their meat, such as a sandwich and maybe try the fries to go if I ever go back, but I doubt it.

Yelp
I'm not local to Jax but if I were you could likely find me regularly at The Butt Hutt. I'm pretty sure I first heard about this spot through social media and I'm so glad that I did. I ordered food to take to a family member and it was without a doubt the best thing I ate my entire trip to Jax. Everyone who caught a whiff of it wanted to know what we were eating and where it came from. I don't blame them. As soon as I stepped out of the car into their parking lot and smelled that pecan smoke I knew it was going to be good. We arrived early but there was still a little wait. We had actually tried to order a pickup order the night before however, their hours recently changed and they now close at 8pm. They have a few tables and a bar top inside, along with a really nice porch and tables outside. Unfortunately, because we were so early the brisket and ribs were both about 30 minutes out from being ready for the day. We'll try those next time along with the smoked bread pudding (that I'm still wishing I had got). We ordered some smoked wings, and a few pork sandwiches. We made sure to get some of each of their sauces that are made in-house. We also got sides of the mac & cheese, which was just a tad on the spicy side. The pork was delicious and everyone who had the wings said they were some of the best they've had. We especially liked the cilantro sauce that came with one of the sandwiches. The family members I visit in Jax love BBQ and I joked whether they'd think The Butt Hutt beat Bono's, Sonny's and Woody's... the definitive answer is yes it 1000% does. I'll definitely be returning to The Butt Hutt.

Clay S.

Yelp
So dang good! Get the baked beans! I had pulled pork sandwich which was amazing wife had brisket sandwich that she loved. You order at the counter unless you sit at the bar. Please don't sit at the bar that's where I like to sit. Food comes out really fast. Tons of outdoor seating, just a few indoor tables. Soda fountain with dr. Pepper. Beers on tap and bottles, no Michelob ultra which hurts my heart. The portions are huge you will be full off one sandwich and one side. Wife said Mac and cheese is really good! Small parking lot so carpool if you can.

Karen C.

Yelp
I've never been a barbecue fan but I do love their food! I especially love the egg rolls but was told today they plan on phasing these out. Noooooo!!!! Please don't get rid of them!

Anthony C.

Yelp
If you have not been to this location at the old island bar, you should definitely stop in. They have a brisket egg roll that is awesome. I was told today that they are going to discontinue selling it. PLEASE DO NOT STOP ! All the food is great and as a bonus the sell my PBR tall boys here.

Destini R.

Yelp
First time here and definitely not the last. Greeted by great music and delicious aromas in the air. The cashier was very helpful in helping us decide. The food didn't take long to arrive nor disappear.

Michelle R.

Yelp
Great service from the team here at Butt Hutt Smokehouse. I got the platter and split it between my brother and I. We both are big guys and left STUFFED. The pulled pork and brisket were our favorite!! Overall amazing experience and would definitely would recommend!

Skyler W.

Yelp
Food, service and atmosphere where 10/10. Located at the old island bar off Roosevelt. You can always tell good barbecue by the brisket and I highly recommend it. Came to late for burnt ends but I'll definitely be back.

Cindy T.

Yelp
I had driven by this place many times thinking to myself. I need to stop and try this out well last weekend we did and it was fabulous. Everybody ordered different barbecue trays and everybody was pleased with each of their selections. We look forward to being going back soon.

Mitchell M.

Yelp
Wow what a change in some BBQ! Beef Brisket was cooked perfectly and the Jerk Chicken was also an added surprise. Both superb! You have to try the Cilantro Lime Slaw, so refreshing and different. The beans were good too, they are a little spicy probably because of the sausage. I tried someone else's fries, they were also very good. I want to come back and try the Ribs and pork meat. We will definitely be back as a regular!

Steve W.

Yelp
It was a pleasant surprise. At first, I thought I was at the wrong place because it was a small building in a corner lot of the road. But I was hungry and decided to give it a try. The place has a quaint atmosphere, and the food is fast and good. Give it a try if in the area.

Whitney D.

Yelp
I'm so glad Butt Hutt got a brick & mortar. I had been wanting to try them for a few years but never in the right side of town as them. We have eaten there a few times now and it never disappoints! We get the pulled pork sandwiches which are always so full! I get the tasty fries and my boyfriend loves their corn nuggets. I just wished they had ranch withOUT cilantro. These fries taste better with ranch.

Zachary Z.

Yelp
Really good bbq. The pork belly bacon was way to salty For my liking but was very tender

Nikki P.

Yelp
Finally tried the butt Hutt bbq! Super flavorful, well done BBQ! The pork, bacon and brisket were delicious!! The place has inside sitting and a lot of outdoor sitting. Super cozy with great beach like music playing in the speakers. They have tvs in the inside. Some local beers. Definitely check this place out.

Art C.

Yelp
Love the Caribbean jerk chicken and the brisket along with the local IPA (Intuition) made by the cook.

Thomas C.

Yelp
The bbq is amazing. Service was great. Would recommend this place to anyone craving a good meal.

Michael S.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. The pulled pork was so soft it was like butter. The fries were a little salty, but that's just how I like them. The collard greens were sweet and tangy. It's such a quaint little building but decorated so colorfully. Overall it was a fantastic meal and a great value for the quality and quantity.

George P.

Yelp
First off, I ordered a 1/2 of pulled pork, 1/2 of brisket, 1/2 rack of ribs and a small lime/cilantro slaw. The pulled pork was pretty good! It had some of the bark mixed in and was flavorful. The brisket was not cooked to the level that I expect from brisket. It did not pass the pull test ( which indicates how well it's done). The Sweet BBQ sauce was overloaded with cumin. When I think of sweet I think of Sweet Baby Ray's type sauce. The ribs were mediocre mostly because of the overpowering sauce! The Lime/cilantro slaw was a shining star of this medley and a pleasant surprise. I would go back for the pulled pork and slaw but that's it. The staff was very friendly and attentive.

Mylon P.

Yelp
Summary: This is without a doubt, Jacksonville's best barbecue, and some of the best barbecue I've ever eaten. Order: Florida Fries w/ Brisket and Sausage About: $28 It's been seven years since I started going to the Butt Hutt Smokehouse when it was a food truck and wrote a review for them the first time. This past weekend I got to go to their soft opening and could don't be more excited.not be more excited. Very little has changed, except the prices, I mean, it's been seven years guys, we've all seen with inflation did to the country right? Clearly, the prices are gonna be more expensive. But what matters has not changed. The food is still incredible (it's some of the best brisket, I've ever eaten) the sauce is still made of some wild magic that I can't wrap my head around, and the vibe is still super chill. I've been looking forward to the Butt Hutt getting a physical restaurant for probably three years at this point, and I am beyond excited! And you should be too! If you haven't tried their BBQ before now, you've been missing out on some of the best barbecue life has to offer, and now it's really easy to get that fix. With their permanent location they've got awesome outdoor seating, a cool indoor vibe, and you don't have to try and hunt them down around the city to get killer BBQ. I am so excited for Jacob, for the whole Butt Hutt team, for me, you, and the rest of Jacksonville! If you haven't eaten here yet, you need to fix that as quickly as possible, and if you have already eaten here, it's probably about time you go back.

Michael M.

Yelp
So I have had the worst week and my husband showed me a pic of some fries because carbs are king right?!? Of course I said yes that's what I wanna try! Few days later we end up here. We order the curry fries , brisket, and wings. The weather was absolutely perfect so we sat outside. I'm not saying I met Jesus but my soul was healed today during our meal. Yes the food is good, honestly the best bbq brisket I have had in Jacksonville but it's just one factor in the whole experience. The other factor is how you feel during the experience. I want to say thank you to the team working today it was such a personal and peaceful experience. The vibe and energy feels great here and it shows in the team and the food. Emily and Len thank you for being so sweet and kind to me and my family. We enjoyed our time and definitely will be back!! It's nice to see great business owners treat their team and their products with the highest integrity. Thank you!

Craig M.

Yelp
We enjoyed our meal and found something for everyone. Wife had the sides platter, son the grilled cheese and I had brisket and burnt ends as an extra meat. The brisket, fatty, was moist and well cooked. I did not notice any bark or seasoning. I have taken to the foil boat method for my own and have developed an expectation of crispy bark. We enjoyed the sides and my only complaint would be the burnt ends. I prefer them cut with some fat and these were literally the burnt end and crunchy all the way through.

John J.

Yelp
I've been there twice. Their meat is pretty good but every side I've had, has been off. The Mac and cheese was bland. The beans are not what I would consider bbq beans they had an almost stew like flavor and consistency, the potato salad was like mashed potatoes. Oh and I don't love the sauce either it's ok but again not traditional bbq sauce. I'll go back and order the meats ala cart and grab some sides from somewhere else though.

Alex H.

Yelp
The Food, the service & the ambiance checks all the boxes. Enjoy bc gahhhh dang this is good.

Jim C.

Yelp
The big meaty pork ribs were fall off the bone tender, the brisket was melt in your mouth and both had just the right amount of smoke to flavor but not overpower. Best I've tasted in this part of Fl. The generous serving of cilantro-lime cole slaw was possibly the best cole slaw I've ever had. Their mustard potato salad was a bit too mustard for me and the potatoes too firm, but not so much so that there was any left. Staff was friendly, service great, reasonable price, a little off the beaten path, but well worth the trip!

Sieira K.

Yelp
I had the brisket Smokehouse Salad salad and my boyfriend had the Bangin Beef Curry Fries Good service ... nice setting good vibes

Steve C.

Yelp
Definitely a top five BBQ joint for Jacksonville area. Limited indoor seating, but wasn't crowded at lunch on a Friday. Our group had brisket and pulled pork. The meats were outstanding. It would be nice if they had an option for a two or three meat combo platter. I wanted to try the sausage, but wanted the brisket more. Only sausage choice was spicy. Collards and beans were very good. Fries were outstanding, crisp and very tasty. Counter service only, but staff was friendly and helpful. Overall a great choice for lunch or dinner. If you don't feel like driving all the way out to Woodpeckers, give this a try instead of 4 Rivers or Mojo. I think you'll like it. No pics, ate it all before I thought about it.

Alex M.

Yelp
Been there multiple times and will be back. I love their bbq and the curry fries are soooo good!

David F.

Yelp
Me and my fiancé came there on 10/7. Been in town all week for business. Been looking for good mom and pop places. This was hands down best place we have found. Service, price and food were amazing.

Robert O.

Yelp
One of the best barbecue I've had in Jacksonville. Service was excellent and fast. The food was flavorful and plentiful.

Julie H.

Yelp
Very Nice bbq beef abrisket and pork.. Perfect sitting area outsidefor a beautiful spring like day.

Jessica T.

Yelp
My family is obsessed with bbq. When I'm on my own I usually try to to branch out into other options but I was looking for something high protein and low carb. I picked the pulled pork smokehouse salad. It was delicious. I love the dressing and the meat was perfectly moist. It didn't need sauce but I tried a bit of the sweet bbq and it was nice. ...I literally gasped out loud when I saw other people's orders which had fries at the base... next time

David A.

Yelp
Of the nearly 60 different bbq joints I've tried in Florida, I'd probably put this in the top 3. This is one of the very few spots in Florida that does brisket right; it was smoky, had a flavorful rub, and (most importantly) was tender and not at all dry (not even the flat). The pulled pork also had good smoke flavor and a nice bark. The ribs were good as well, though I'd have preferred a little less tug and would have liked more of the fat to have been rendered. Both sides were good, too -- particularly the collard greens, which were very flavorful. And finally, the staff were very friendly. Ryan even brought me some smoked bread pudding, which was on par with what I'd expect from a serious restaurant. In all, this is legit 'cue and well worth a return visit.

David H.

Yelp
Meat is very tender and good. Beans and fries are very good as well. Slaw has cilantro so that is a hard no for me. Mac and cheese is very spicy. I recommend everything except slaw, but I hate cilantro.

Brent F.

Yelp
Some of the best tasting bbq I've had in Florida. The rub they used on the briskets was very goodc

Spencer O.

Yelp
Tried the brisket and pork belly, pork belly was probably one of the saltiest foods I've ever consumed and I drink salt based electrolytes every day; I like my food salty but I had to drown the pork belly in vinegar to try to expunge the salt (to no avail). The brisket wasn't bad but neither matched quality to price, I will never be coming back a waste of $24 (+$6tip) for a lb of meat.

JoeJulie B.

Yelp
The best BBQ in Jax... fight me. The first time I came to the brick and mortar was the first week they opened and I was expecting less than amazing service just because of how many people were there. It was amazing. Amazing food, wonderful service-- all around phenomenal. I have returned multiple times (teaching coworkers the ways of Butt Hutt and getting them hooked) and the service, experience, and quality of food has never dipped. Keep it up, guys! You are really on to something here!

Sarah S.

Yelp
The food is so good here that our doggo is sad because we won't share! We ordered the pork platter and the chicken thigh sandwich. The spicy mac-n-cheese is amazing!!

Sue D.

Yelp
Friendly fast service. Love the ambiance here but the food just fell flat for me. It was good don't get me wrong but just not what I like or crave. There was a certain flavor I can't put my finger on still but it was somewhat odd to me for BBQ

Beth S.

Yelp
I am not sure why it took us so long to try Butt Hutt. Great food, service and atmosphere at a reasonable price! Will definitely eat here again.
