The Butter End Cakery Is Opening a Bakery in Santa Monica | Eater LA

"Pastry whiz Kimberly Bailey is opening the Butter End Cakery at 512 Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica at the end of June; she founded the business in 2010 and made a name crafting intricately decorated, sky-high cakes for a bevy of Hollywood clients and serving as a Food Network judge (Buddy vs. Duff 2 and Wedding Cake Championship). While best known for elaborate custom cakes, the bakery will also offer more approachable everyday sweets made using organic and locally sourced ingredients, including cakes by the slice, cupcakes, sweet and savory scones, sticky toffee pudding, chocolate bread pudding, butterscotch budino, brownies, and black-and-white cookies as an homage to her New York hometown, with sheet cakes and “every occasion” cakes decorated in Bailey’s award-winning style." - Cathy Chaplin

Google
Got our wedding cake from The Butter End and it was absolutely divine. The tasting with Kimberly was so fun and she helped us design the classic vintage cake of our dreams. We did half carrot cake and chocolate chocolate chip, and our guests were absolutely raving about the cake. Most said “I don’t usually like wedding cake but that cake is the best I’ve ever had!” We are so thankful for a great experience and highly recommend The Butter End.

I cannot tell you how incredible and delicious our wedding cake cake was. We got married at Calamigos Ranch in August 2025 , 130 people. When we were trying cakes, my husband and I were traveling a lot and they were so patient with us. They gave us a 10-cake box sampler when we told them we needed to try our cakes while on the road. Let me tell you, we ate the whole entire box essentially in one sitting. For our cake, we ended up choosing coconut cake with passionfruit icing for 2 tiers and then a chocolate almond cherry for the other 2 tiers. It was so delicious. I am counting down the days until our first anniversary so I can eat the whole entire top that we saved! In addition, they were so nice, so lovely, and a great experience overall. I thought that they were also recently priced for such a well known company. In addition, the detailing of the cake was beautiful. I received so many compliments. I am a Physician Assistant and my husband is a Marine Pilot, which is the topper, and we are cutting the cake with his sword. THANK YOU BUTTER END!!!

THE BEST CUPCAKES IN ALL OF LA! Absolutely need to try them 🤤 Not to mention the wedding cakes are out of this world. Beautiful custom designs, elevated flavor, delicious taste! All my guests asked where it was from! The Butter End of course!

Google
After tasting one of her cakes at a birthday party I knew that it had to be Kimberly who made our daughters Snoopy cake for her birthday. It was absolutely delicious but more importantly for the birthday girl, it was exactly how she wanted it to look. Perfection! All our guests wanted to know who made the cake, it was so special. Thanks so much Kimberly!!

Google
We used The Butter End for our wedding cake since our venue BABC recommended them. After trying two other bakeries, The Butter End was the best tasting one and I loved how you got to sit down with the baker and work with her on the specific design you wanted, it felt so much more personal.

The cupcakes, cookies, macaroons, tarts, cakes etc are not only delicious, but they look AMAZING! Top tier bakery and the bakers are artists!

As someone who firmly believes that butter makes everything better, I’m thrilled to have discovered The Butter End, a woman owned bakery that’s quickly become my new obsession.I stumbled upon this gem while killing time during my son’s music lesson, and let me tell you it was fate. From the moment I walked in, I knew this place was different from the parade of dry, cardboard like over sugared bakeries that have disappointed me in the past (yes, even the “popular” ones). The passion fruit coconut cupcake? Pure tropical heaven. It wasn’t drowning in sugary icing like so many others instead, it was perfectly tangy, beautifully balanced, and honestly one of the best things I’ve eaten in ages. But here’s where things got really interesting: the goat cheese raspberry macarons. Yes, you read that right. GOAT CHEESE. In a macaron. With raspberry. It’s like the charcuterie board of desserts, and I’m here for it. The subtle savory notes, the tang, the hint of sweetness I’m genuinely sad I only bought two. Now I can’t stop dreaming about fig and goat cheese, honey and goat cheese… the possibilities are endless! What really sets The Butter End apart isn’t just the creative flavors and perfectly moist, buttery goodness (though that alone would win me over). It’s clear that whoever is creating these treats understands that quality ingredients especially butter make all the difference. Every bite was fresh, flavorful, and thoughtfully crafted. I also have to give a huge shoutout to Ashley, who was working that Tuesday. In a world where customer service often feels like an afterthought, Ashley was an absolute breath of fresh air. She was knowledgeable, engaged, bubbly, and genuinely passionate about helping me navigate the delicious dilemma of too many good choices. She made me feel valued and welcome, which speaks volumes about the owner’s ability to hire people who truly care.Bottom line: The Butter End has won my heart (and my wallet). Woman owned, incredibly creative flavors, quality ingredients, and stellar service? Run, ( so you can burn off all the calories that you’re about to eat ) don’t walk, to this bakery. I’ll definitely be back more often than my waistline would probably recommend but honestly, it’s worth every single bite.

Wow! Whenever I visit Santa Monica I ALWAYS visit this bakery. It changes with the seasons but never changes the quality and beauty. Fantastic cookies. Epic cupcakes. Warms the heart and makes the belly happy for any occasion. Big love to Butter End. Paige helped us out and made it so easy. Hard not to buy the whole store! See you next time fam!

Yelp
When you first open the door, the ambiance just wraps around you. Warm, elegant, a little bit Paris. It's modern but cozy, understated but intentional. Then you see the case. It's like a jewelry store--but instead of diamonds, it's filled with cupcakes that look like edible art. I'm not exaggerating. Each one was displayed like it belonged on a pedestal, and honestly? It did. Let's talk flavors--because every single one of the six I bought hit the mark. I started with the Banana Chocolate Chip (Edie's Banana Chocolate Chip Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting), and it was shockingly good. Like, "wait a minute--is that real banana?" Yes. It was. No fake flavors. No overpowering sugar bomb. Just moist, perfectly balanced cake with rich chocolate chips and a frosting that didn't coat your teeth with sugar. Then there was the Coconut Cake with Passion Fruit Buttercream, which has its own backstory: they created it for a groom who wanted passion fruit, and it became a shop favorite. I can see why. That passion fruit buttercream? It's now my weakness too--bright, tangy, tropical, and just plain addictive. The dark chocolate one with a cherry on top (which I'm guessing was the Chocolate Almond Cherry Cake with Cherry Cream Cheese Buttercream) was another standout. Rich, slightly boozy in vibe, made with marzipan, and layered with just the right amount of cherry. You don't always get nuance in cupcakes, but these--every one of them--had depth. Like they weren't trying to win you over with sugar; they were trying to impress you with actual craft. And now... let me pause for the carrot cake. Kimberly's Carrot Cake with Walnuts & Cream Cheese Frosting was a spiritual experience. Moist, warm, soft, rich with spice and texture--you could taste that it was made with real grannies in mind. Organic carrots are hand-peeled and grated, walnuts are chopped by hand, and they even mix the batter with a wooden spoon in a bowl. It's not just a story--it's baked in. It felt like something your grandmother would make if she had a James Beard Award and impeccable taste. There was heart in that cupcake. And that frosting? Perfect. Every cupcake had its own identity. The chocolate wasn't flat. The vanilla bean (with actual flecks!) was rich and luxurious. Nothing was cloying, artificial, or overdone. Just beautifully balanced, deeply satisfying desserts made with top-tier ingredients: cage-free eggs, hormone-free butter, organic milk, real vanilla extract (no imitation anything), organic fruit--you can taste the difference. They also make cakes--gorgeous ones with real flowers, displayed like they were ready for the cover of Martha Stewart Weddings. I tried to get a photo, but the sun through the window didn't do it justice. You've gotta see it in person. The staff? Friendly, warm, knowledgeable. The guy who helped me actually knew the products and gave me a recommendation I'll be dreaming about until next time (that carrot cake, again--yes, I'm still talking about it). If you think all cupcake places are the same, you haven't been to The Butter End. This isn't mass-produced. This is handcrafted, intentional baking at its finest. This is officially my new favorite cupcake shop. And trust me--once you taste one, it's going to be yours too. Run don't walk yo the Butter End cakery!

Yelp
This is the new Santa Monica location for this Gardena-based bakery. The store is very cute. They offer a variety of cupcakes, pastries and coffee. However, there is no seating inside. This is more of a grab-and-go place. I got the vegan vanilla cupcake with vegan buttercream. It was made with almond milk. The texture of the cake was moist which I loved. I found the frosting to be too sweet but my daughter enjoyed it. I also tried their blueberry walnut cake with lemon buttercream. I found the flavors more balanced in this one. I loved the tartness from the blueberries. Again I found the buttercream to be too sweet but the cake itself was delicious. Paige was very helpful. The cake shop is 5 blocks away from the beach. I found street parking on a weekday afternoon. Parking can be challenging on the weekend.

Yelp
Cute bakery! Stopped here on our way to another store, but stopped to look at their amazing cupcake display Their cupcakes were enjoyable and thoughtful in their flavors The only barrier here is that there are no tables or chairs inside or outside to enjoy eating the cupcakes. My friend and I had to eat it on the sidewalk, which became difficult. The server was attentive and knowledgeable about the cupcakes they were selling. This location has been around since August of last year You can also order cupcakes in advance for any event!

Yelp
The most perfect wedding cake we could have ever imagined! The Butter End Cakery came highly recommended, and they worked in such a kind, communicative, thoughtful, and timely manner to deliver on every detail and create the wedding cake of our dreams. It was stunning and the most delicious vanilla cake we have ever had, and so many guests are still complimenting our cake months later! We can't wait for our next cake

Yelp
The cupcakes and cookies here taste SO good super fresh and rich and NOT TOO SWEET! Ashley was really kind and helpful, which made it even better:D Definitely worth stopping by

Yelp
The Butter End makes my favorite cakes in the entire world. They also did my wedding cake, so it's nice to be able to relive my wedding night dessert through their amazing cupcakes. The Chocolate Almond Cherry Cake w/ Cherry Cream Cheese Buttercream is an absolute cake game changer. Their signature buttercream frosting is out of this world and not too sweet. While the cake is dense, it's also moist at the same time. Trust when I say it's like no other cake you've ever had. The owner, Kimberly is extremely talented and created a beautiful custom sculpted cake of our pup for our wedding. She's also a judge on a couple of Food Network shows, so you know she's the real deal. The new bakery in Santa Monica is modern and the staff is extremely friendly. They also accept custom cake orders online. Be sure to try their cakes for your next event!

Yelp
I needed a cake for a friends birthday on short notice and The Butter End was fantastic. They were able to pull it off and the Chocolate Cherry Almond cake was not only spectacular but it was delicious. 10/10.

Yelp
I left a full-blown, dramatic love letter over on Google, so I won't copy/paste it all here -- but just know: The Butter End is EVERYTHING. Cupcakes, tiramisu, tarts, cookies... and the eclairs?? Game. Over. I used to have another place that was my dessert girlfriend where I went FREQUENTLY for tiramisu but... it's over. AND IM NOT GOING BACK. The shop is spotless, the staff is lovely, and Kim -- the owner -- truly makes happy. I just got to meet her on my, maybe 15th visit lol. You can feel it in every bite. I go every week. Sometimes three times a week. Not sorry. This is coming from a complete sugar head who has tasted most desserts and is a harsh critic - get an eclair, fruit tart, chocolate almond cherry cupcake, double chocolate cookie, lemon anything, and one more eclair. And tell me I'm lying! Go get t If you're even thinking about going, do it. Just go. And run, don't walk. And bring tissues. Joy might leak from your face. Or maybe the icing will ‍

Yelp
My boss the MVP carrier of the bar treated me and the rest of her staff to these amazing cupcakes. I have not even been on location but these cupcakes were so good I felt compelled to write a good review. These are intensely rich flavors that hold well even in a fridge. They pair well with dessert wine, cognac, whiskey or rum and all of the above. I will frequently request that my boss bring more of these or I will be forced to arrive myself to devour these and order more for the rest of my coworkers.

Yelp
Today I bought a special cupcake treat at The Butter End Cakery on Wilshire in Santa Monica. Not only was the cupcake incredibly delicious and fresh, but it was also gorgeous! Every cupcake is decorated with edible flowers! A real treat for your eyes and your mouth! They use locally sourced and pure ingredients as well. Wonderful and friendly service.

Yelp
This place is so nice! The girl (I really wish I got her name), was super kind and informative. The cupcakes looked absolutely delicious. Tastes delicious too! I cant decide which one is my favorite yet!!

Yelp
This bakery had me at snickerdoodles, but then a snickerdoodle cookie with apple pie inside? I'm in heaven! And for the record, it tastes just as delicious as it sounds! This is a great spot if you want gourmet desserts. They have all the goods from cupcakes to macaroons to ready-made, mini-sized cakes with beautiful floral designs and edible pressed flowers. I like popping in somestimes to see and smell the flavors of the day. Lemon ricotta? Creme brulee? Vanilla bean? Let me try them all!

Yelp
So exciting that this bakery finally opened!! I've seen it in the works for a while, and have been waiting eagerly for it. I think that they are currently in their soft opening phase right now. I believe the owner/head baker is there on a daily basis working with the pastry chefs there to make sure they get the cupcake recipes perfection. She was so friendly in chatting with, describing different cupcakes, and even giving me samples and asking for feedback as they perfect it. The cupcakes are beautifully decorated with flowers and sprinkles, but in a very tasteful way...think adult cupakes. Speaking of which, they actually do have an adult cupcake -- a chocolate bourbon cupcake. They also have a variety of pastries, including macarons that are perfection. I think that they are continually adding more pastry offerings, including a bacon scone, coffee cake, etc. This is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood.

Yelp
Divine!! I am a gourmet cupcake snob and oh my... these cupcakes nailed it! Only downside is I live 2 hours away but maybe that's a good thing for my health. Definitely pricey $5.50 a cupcake but well spent. Oh and NO CASH accepted. I got the carrot cake, coconut passion fruit, red velvet, chocolate, vanilla bean, & lemon. I think Lemon was my favorite, probably because it was something different, coconut passion fruit as a second. Keep up the great baking!! I'll be back!!!

Yelp
Amazing bakery in Santa Monica. The display case reminded me of patisserie's in Paris

Me W.

Yelp
I always get the oatmeal cookie which is divine and today received an amazing box of six assorted cupcakes which I shared with friends. We each thought they were fabulous, a delectable balance of deliciousness and comfort, not too sweet nor rich, just perfect. The best cupcake I ever ate in my life. Thank you.

Maria M.

Yelp
We booked The Butter End for our wedding and we (along with all of our guests) loved the cake. Kim and her staff were so delightful and easy to work with from start to finish. We also scheduled a cake tasting in which I got to try TEN different flavors of cake, all of which were absolutely delicious. I even got to bring some back home for my mom and fiance to try out. We ended up choosing two flavors, banana bread and almond, both of which were a hit with our wedding guests. Kim and her team also perfectly captured the decorations for our cake - we wanted pressed flowers that aligned with the theme and vision for the rest of our wedding and it turned out to really beautiful. We will have to come back to celebrate our anniversary and order cake in our wedding flavors because we loved it that much.

Yelp
Just went in with a friend and got two cupcakes. Chocolate and carrot cake. Both were deliciously moist. Customer service was great and the shop is beautiful. Highly recommend!

Chris J.

Yelp
Kimberly, the owner, is very involved and kind. I got there late on a Saturday (No Kings Day) and her stock was low. I have always been suspicious of gluten free and vegan treats. she told me these were her favorites. She was so correct. I am very grateful. Didn't take photos because they didn't last lomg enough.
google avatar

Steven S.

Yelp
We just got back from The Butter End with a box of exceptional cakes and cookies. I should have thought to take a picture of the sheet cake but too late, so here's a pic of two cupcakes. Our favorites so far Sheet Cake (any flavor), Coffee Cake, Lemon Ricotta Cookies. Today was our fourth visit in a couple weeks. There is always something new to try. Everything is amazing!
google avatar

Shab A.

Yelp
Yum! Gorgeous, elevated cupcakes that bring unique flavors to the scene. I love that they have the classics - but also unexpected gems like my new favorite: the coconut cupcake with passion fruit frosting. My other favorite was the apple pie snickerdoodle cookie. It's a sweet tooth utopia and there's something for everyone!!!

Anna V.

Yelp
Um, all I can say is cherry almond chocolate cupcake. You won't forget it once you've had one. We also tried the ricotta lemon rosemary scone. Does it sound weird... yes. Is it a party in your mouth...yes.

Yelp
Been eyeing this place since construction began a few months ago and voila it's open. Santa Monica has had a pastry resurgence of pastry in the last few years with bakeries like Tartine and well known Sweet Lady Jane. I was excited that this new little gem finally opened when I drove by. Of course being the foodie and gluten lover that I am I could not resist. Daveaa (sorry in advance for the misspelling) greeted me with a warm friendly smile. Since no one was there I had a million questions about this place. She shares Kimberly Bailey's story and her love of making cakes led her to owning her own bake shop. Found out we have the same birthday too August 31. Yes, no one does details like a Virgo! I love a local and woman owned business. I can see the love she put into designing the bake shop black and whites are the prominent color schemes with an entire section of the bake shop is wall papered with leaves and monkeys. I have the same wallpaper at home and yes it's a conversation started. Let's talk pastries! I bought the Tiramisu, Chocolate Raspberry Cupcake (there most popular), Chocolate Chip Coolie, Lemon Macaron and Coffee Cake. After sharing my pastries with family and friends, I'd have to say hands down that Coffee Cake took us all down memory lane. It is hands down the best coffee cake I've ever had. Not to give no love to the other pastries but we all love us some coffee cake. Since my birthday is around the corner I will order a cake and follow up and update this review. Worth visiting as a local and tourist alike. I think for sure I will be a regular with that coffee cake! Bon Appetite!

Mo R.

Yelp
From the moment I contacted Kimberly and her team regarding a cake for my dogs Quinceneara, I knew that it would be a great experience. The cake tasted delicious and was one of the best looking cakes! The characters on the cake were so perfectly done and resembled our little boy and his siblings! The attention to detail was very impressive from making the eyes and tongue shine to the matte coloring of the fur and the multiple colors on the sarape cape. Definitely ordering again from them! Also, the Santa Monica location has so many yummy cakes and cup cakes to pick up as well--all served and packaged with a lot of care. They truly care about their customer experience!

Yelp
Butter end is a celiac's dream! Their gluten free cakes are outstanding and their bakers are careful, accommodating, and so kind. Can't believe I hadn't been there before.
google avatar

Paige N.

Yelp
On a last-minute whim, we decided to go for cupcakes! Paige was so nice to let us in right at 5:30 on a Saturday.... when they were suppose to be closing. She sweetly let us pick from the few they had left at the end of the day - some cookies and some cupcakes. They ended up being the perfect treat to wrap up a busy Saturday thank you Butter End. Thank you Paige

Maki F.

Yelp
Stumbled across this amazing bakery that just had their soft opening. My life just got better! We don't have anything like this in Santa Monica, they have cookies, macarons, cupcakes, scones, and they make custom cakes.

Guity T.

Yelp
Local produce with a talent baker. I tried the scone with customized butter and honey on the side and it was so Good that I just couldn't wait to get to Home to eat it. Strongly recommend to stop by.
google avatar

Georg J.

Yelp
Yum! It's nice to have a premium bakery in the neighborhood! Sweet Lady Jane seems to have recovered but this place leaves them in the dust. Welcome to the neighborhood!

Rachel S.

Yelp
Kimberly (owner and baker extraordinaire) created my wedding cake last October and it was STUNNING. Her cakes, cupcakes, cookies, scones are some of the best I've ever had not just in LA, but all over the world. She's a joy to work with and as someone with a sweet tooth to rival any kid, I can tell you this is the only bakery I will ever go to now. Do yourself a favor and get the chocolate cherry almond and coconut passionfuit flavors. The best!!!

Roland C.

Yelp
The absolute best cookies and cupcakes ever! Consistently delicious. Perfect for your own house or to bring to others. You won't be disappointed!

Nicole W.

Yelp
I got a variety of tasty cupcakes...Beautifully and individually decorated! The cookie (oatmeal cranberry?) was ridiculously good... huge cookie but like a non-shareable kinda item! Yum! Super friendly and 'excited to greet' customer service... I left with a huge smile!! I'll be back!
google avatar

Kathryn H.

Yelp
Obsessed with this bakery. We visited twice since discovering it opened in the neighborhood. The cupcakes are wonderful and we got a warm welcome with our cake-loving kid both times. Can't wait to try a cake for our next occasion.

Katie L.

Yelp
Delicious cakes and pastries!! Highly recommend to try! Their cakes are so beautiful and yummy!

Sharon S.

Yelp
I received their cookies from a friend as a birthday gift (shipped from CA to IL). What a HUGE disappointment. My friend ordered 10 assorted cookies to be placed in two boxes of five. I received one box with 9 cookies jam packed into it (they shorted one cookie). Whoever packed them just shoved them into the box with no paper/packaging to separate nor protect them. And nothing to maintain their freshness. The lone cookie with icing was jammed into one end and all the icing was stuck to the box. The next cookie was an obliterated crumbled up mess. The next cookie was broken. Another cookie was so mushy, I thought it was raw. The chocolate chip & peanut butter cookies were dry. Only the oatmeal raisin cookies were okay. What a letdown. My friend confronted the bakery, armed with photos I took, and they only offered her a 50% refund. Ridiculous! Especially for a "high end" bakery. Lesson learned: don't order their cookies to ship!

Nahal H.

Yelp
I've been waiting for this bakery to open!! When I walked in everything looked so good!! The prettiest cupcakes with the best flavors!! I got about a half dozen cupcakes , coconut passion fruit and carrot cake were my favorites!! They even had a crème brûlée cupcake that they torched right then for me!! I also tried the snickerdoodle apple pie cookie which was the most delicious cookie I have ever had!! So soft and moist and the apple pie filling was amazing!! They have small cakes that are beautifully decorated for special occasions that you can pick up too!! I can't wait to go back and try more treats!!

Rachanee P.

Yelp
Was heading to a family gathering. Stop by this place. I was picking out several different kinds of cupcakes and cakes. It's not just on kind of flavor, one cupcake has 2/3 flavors mixed but complimented each other very well. Very interesting style and details. The service was very nice and so friendly. What's happening? They all so good, everything gone in few minutes. And I didn't get chance to take a photo. That's how delicious they were. Will definitely going back. Thank you for a special treat as well.

Ann M.

Yelp
We ordered a pumpkin pie for Thankgiving and it was very disappointing. The pumpkin filling was OK but the crust was so thick that we practically needed chisels to cut through it. We ended up eating the filling out of the pie and throwing away the crust. Really NOT worth the $69.00 it cost. We would have been better off getting a pie from Marie Callendars.

Yelp
Love this place! Seriously enjoyed the best damn coffee cake I've ever had. Wonderful opportunity to also meet the owner, Kimberly.

Greta P.

Yelp
I'm not sure I have the words to describe how amazing this place is. "5 stars" doesn't cut it. The ambiance is fantastic. The attention to every detail creates a cascading experience as soon as you walk through the doors. My senses were exploding -- and that was before I tried the lemon meringue eclair (LOVE). The perfection of presentation, the energy of joy and abundance and playfulness in the service (you'll want to work here just so you don't have to leave), the artistry and mastery in each custom cake, cookie, eclair, macaroon ... I just feel like I should start free-flowing delicious words here because that's just how damn good this place is. Treat yourself, and you'll see what I mean. Seriously.

Linda K.

Yelp
I was so sad Georgetown cupcakes and vanilla bake shop closed. But then I passed by The Butter End and thought I would try a couple things....WOW! My expectations were exceeded and happy to say probably my new staple bakery. I tried the lemon rosemary cookie which was delightful. The cupcakes have an amazing texture, not dry and dense like sprinkles, or too sweet frosting like Susie cakes. And the flavors!! Coconut with passion fruit frosting was my favorite but also amazing and unique was the crème brûlée freshly torched. I'm excited to try more!

Anna B.

Yelp
We had the best experience at the butter end cakery for our wedding cake tasting!!! The store is absolutely stunning and the cake is delicious, flavorful and moist!! We can't wait to design and order our wedding cake with them! Just a lovely experience!!

Jose O.

Yelp
Best cookie in the world! I highly recommend. The staff is friendly. Their customer service is A1
