The Hottest New Restaurants to Try Around Baltimore

"The Bun Shop owner and chef Minh Vo opened a sister spot, the Buttonwood, in December. The Mt. Vernon newcomer features plants and housewares for sale, as well as globally influenced dishes and a full-service bar. The current menu offers an array of international dishes including a Vietnamese banh mi, katsu curry, steak frites, and a bulgogi melt. In true Bun Shop style, the interior is beautifully decorated with velvet furniture and vegetation galore." - Jess Mayhugh, Tierney Plumb

Google
A hidden gem, where I hope to become a regular! The place is so beautifully decorated, it would be a spectacular date spot. The food was excellent and so were the drinks. Our server and the bartender were charismatic and attentive; the whole experience was top notch!

Google
The place and the waitress(sorry, forgot to ask her name but all the 5 stars are for her). The rustic decor of the place, the food every thing was great! We ordered Pakora, Beignets, Taiwanese chicken and Cauliflower and flavored rice( sorry for messing the names). The cauliflower dish was bland and I wish there was a gravy on the side. But I won’t complain much because the service was amazing!

Google
A bit hard to find as the front looks more like an antiques store. The interior is interesting and elegant in a somewhat exotic way. The bar looks as if it was transported from a movie set, dominating, cold and again elegant. I really liked the interior since it was cozy but also slightly unsettling. The pakora was too moist for my taste while the Ugandan Rolex was tasty and fun. The old fashion was well mixed (not too sweet) and they offer a good variety of vegetarian dishes.

Vintage greek vibe restaurant with fusion food Inside was really pretty. I thought it was not a restaurant at first when I walked in. I really liked the tree inside with natural light. We ordered rose colada and passion fruit mojito which were good. We ordered chicken Schnitzel and vietnamese bahn mi which were pretty decent. Schnitzel was thinner than I expected but it is not bad. I dont know if the dinner menu will be different or something but I wanna come here for drinks again, not necessarily to dine here again. I would like to come here next time for drinks and light snacks with it. I recommend this place for drink but not too sure about food. Food was good but it is nothing impressive though.

Google
Amazing prices for the offerings, really solid (and some very creative) dishes. We had the thyme & Gruyère beignets, steak frites, chicken schnitzel, and lavender crème brûlée. All fantastic, and for the price absolutely cannot be beaten. The food is comforting, the surroundings are antique and vintage, it’s the old charm of Mount Vernon come to life again. I truly hope this place thrives, because it’s a beautiful space with wonderful staff and great food.

My experience at The Buttonwood was excellent! Our server/bartender was Debra and she was very helpful, attentive, and knowledgeable. We enjoyed our food and drinks and will definitely be returning!

Google
Amazing hidden treasure place!!! Not only were the drinks and food delicious but the service was on another level. It’s definitely a place where you want to take your time and eat with your love ones or by yourself.

Google
Lucked into this delicious eclectic spot in Mt Vernon on a weekend escape from DC. Thanks to Sydney for the warm welcome! Refreshed by the langkawi cocktail (lychee vodka/lime) she recommended, and loved the Taiwanese salt and pepper chicken crispy juicy with tangy sauce. Fellow travellers, bring a ziploc and bring home any extras. I made Amtrak customers a lil jealous.

Yelp
Took a lunch break from the Walters Art gallery and the ambiance and attitude was perfect for it. Great interior space, excellent food and drink. Very reasonable price wise as well. Highly recommend.

Yelp
We were hungry around 3pm, which is when a lot of restaurants are closed, so we were happy to see the Buttonwood was nearby and had good reviews on Yelp. For good reason! We were the only people there, but that didn't matter because the waitperson was attentive and friendly. She whipped up the amazing cocktails that were so tasty I could have had a few. Since I was driving I stuck to just one. Seriously inventive and refreshing cocktails! She said they pride themselves on making tasty creations. To eat, there were several good looking options. To start I couldn't pass up the gruyere beignets. My spouse got the pepper and salt chicken bites. The chicken bites were the best tasting I've ever had. I couldn't finish the beignets- there were about 12 of them, so it's definitely a share plate. For the entree I got the roasted cauliflower and my spouse got the braised spare ribs. If you think you don't like cauliflower, you will change your mind after this dish. It's so flavorful! The spare ribs were eaten quickly so I'm assuming my spouse enjoyed them lol. If you find yourself near Mt Vernon and want a good cocktail or something different to eat, try Buttonwood.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday night for date night. First thing I noticed was the vibes were immaculate, the whole time I felt like I was eating in a sculpture garden. The chairs were plush and comfortable and were positioned so that you felt like you had privacy but also felt integrated into the environment of the restaurant. We got the Taiwanese Salt and Pepper Chicken and the Vietnamese Spare Ribs and the Buttonwood Punch to share. The Taiwanese chicken was good but little basic in my opinion. The Vietnamese spare ribs on the other hand is a must have. The meat was perfectly cooked and fell right off the bone and the sauce mixed with the rice was delicious. The punch was very refreshing and nice for a spring day. The service, while moderately chaotic (possibly due to being understaffed this day) was very pleasant.

Yelp
The place is gorgeous! The vibe was great and it's what attracted us here. Our server was very kind but he was the only one working the floor so it took some time for us to get water and get checked on. We ordered their taiwanese chicken as a starter which was great, mind you it is made with chicken thighs and it makes so much better than your usual fried chicken bites, plus the sauce was a great add! We also got their pesto chicken sandwich to share which was good though the chicken cutlet was very thin. Overall a nice place

Yelp
My friend and I were recommended this place by the people who work at Lumière Candle Studio. When we first arrived at the restaurant I was confused because I thought it was an antique furniture store. However, once walking we greeted and saw a bar + dining tables. The food was soooo good, and it was priced quite well! The people who were working that night were kind, welcoming, and sociable!

Yelp
Adorable spot for lunch with a friend. Excellent service. Loved the pretty drinks. Banh mi was no traditional but good. Beignets were a miss.

Yelp
Little signage, lots of history. This is the old Sascha's! New owner. Tremendous quality and fun. Buttonwood is the owners favorite family tree which sits in the back of the bar. Food is Asian/indian/Gourmet. Drinks are also fusion with chartreuse inspired drinks. The owner (who also owns the Bum shop by UMD has outlets of thought and is still refining the place. Pakoras were excellent. Drinks were great and space was fun!

Yelp
What a great place to stumble upon. We were in the area visiting the art museum and wanted a good meal and boy did we find one. This is such a great space. It feel natural and open and luxurious without feeling luxe. It feels like you belong. It feels almost like something out of Italy? Like those vibes. Very cozy but open and nice but obtainable. I haven't experienced anything like this here in Baltimore. The drinks, delicious. So summery, so boozy, so good. The food was great. You can peek at the full menu that will be rolling out soon and it's so exciting. The fusion that they're doing here is going to be so bomb. The schnitzel was great, the fries were so well seasoned. The bulgogi sandwich was wonderful. And the service was attentive but not overbearing. Definitely a spot I can see becoming one of the new up and coming "it" spots!!

Yelp
Wide variety of dining options and more affordable than I expected. My wife said it was the best Steak Frites that she's ever had and my Ugandan Rolodex and Ginger & Red Pepper Fried Rice were so flavorful and good. Love seeing a new restaurant in this beautiful space (I still miss Sasha's) and can't wait until all of their menu items are available. Great staff. 10/10 Would Recommend!

Yelp
I was here on their soft opening. I didn't have time to write the review and then I forgot about it. I loved this stop. I stumbled upon it walking to the Peabody library. I stopped in and the food was what the soul needed. The menu was a work in progress and an eclectic blend of a little bit of everything. The butter was something I am still thinking about and it was January when I dined here. The owner was delightful. I had a wonderful conversation and would highly recommend. 5star for service 5star for food But the 10 + star is the ambience. The collection of home goods and botany delights were incredible. It was so nice. The details down to the silverware was perfect.

Yelp
I would love to be more generous to a newer restaurant....but not at Yelpers expense. The positive, my cocktail was sophisticated and delicious and they have a nice wine list with a lot of by-the-glass options. My appetizer, salt and pepper chicken, was fine, if a little boring. My dinner, riblets over rice, was not restaurant worthy. It wasn't visually appealing and was only ok. I understand they're still trying to settle on a menu, I felt like a guinea pig, to be honest.

Yelp
I am an out of town visitor and love this place. Deb is one of the coolest and most interesting people l've had the pleasure of meeting in the city. Deb is an excellent bartender and server. Thanks for the hospitality Deb!!! Ha! I almost forgot to say the food is good.

Yelp
The vibes are immaculate at this restaurant. It's a large space with plenty of seating and cool decor. They were playing lofi hip hop which is totally my jam and added to the overall chill vibe. I ordered the chicken katsu curry and pakora. The katsu was lightly battered and fried, not greasy or heavy whatsoever. The pakora was also lightly battered and fried, well seasoned, and not oily. Service was attentive without being overbearing. I dined here at 11am on a Saturday, which is early but I saw that they had big tables marked with "reserved" so I think it gets packed later on.

Yelp
Very cool spot with an eclectic menu. It looks like a disused museum inside. Cool chairs and good food. Didn't try drinks but the cocktail menu looked like a nice selection of well priced classics. Liked the beignets and the Indian spiced fried chicken sandwich.

Yelp
what a great new find! Had lunch there today after a visit to the Walters Art Museum. Excellent food, friendly staff and great vibe. My new go to place when I head to Baltimore for lunch! Thank you.

Yelp
Great service, ambiance is very different but in the best way possible. Food is flavorful and affordable! Great spot for dates or just a personal drink

Yelp
I found the Buttonwood by pure accident, but glad I did. I liked the ambiance and antique East Indian vibes. The buttonwood punch was a great option if you love sweeter drinks and for the price well worth it. The compound butter flute (flight) is what kept there past my initial quick drink pop in. The red is tomato chili fennel. It's flavorful and well seasoned, the green was curry not a fav, and the purple was lemon blueberry. The bread they paired with it was warm and pillowy. I took a start because they had one cook so good times were long so I didn't do an entree. But they're still fairly new so no biggie. I'll def be back I wanna try their steak frites

Yelp
This gem is worth all praise. A great food and mixology menu, personalable service and the accidentally on purpose decor make this. Must try. The French fries are a must. I had the salt and pepper chicken start. This was some of best chicken I've ever had. Period. The grilled cheese on rye with bacon was just what I needed

Yelp
Save yourself a train ride to NYC. This restaurant is right out of Tribeca. Absolutely fantastic food in a reclaimed furniture store. No phone number. No reservations. Start with the Gruyère cheese beignets with honey and thyme or the breaded Salt & Pepper Chicken.

Yelp
Food was flavorful from the first bite. Good portions and server was attentive. Left feeling full and satisfied. Loved the interior aesthetic choices. Would definitely come back to try their other dishes.

Yelp
I was very excited to try this place as it's in my neighborhood. The food was really good, the service was ok. I am not a person of high demands and having been in the service industry at one point in my life, this place has some work to do but I'll be back because the food and drinks were great.

Yelp
Good service. Not so good food. Over fried salty sandwich. It was deleted from the bill.

Lee S.

Yelp
The ambiance was great, very pretty. But, the service was absolutely horrible. We ordered appetizers... never got them. I ordered a drink and only got it AFTER my entre had already arrived and it wasn't even good. The drink tasted horrible. And the food was okay, not the best. I was just trying to have a nice lunch with my family and instead ended up having the most horrible service I have ever had in my life.

Margo W.

Yelp
Excellent food and atmosphere! Large variety of options on the menu. Super cool furnitur.

Joon Soo K.

Yelp
The Buttonwood has great ambiance and service! I got the spare ribs, and my friends got the katsu curry and pork bokit. We also got the butter board to share. The sandwich was mildly dry, but everything else was fantastic. Glad this place opened up in Baltimore!

Yelp
An unusual menu that combines Asian with a sandwich place. Friendly service and very cool decor. Across the street from the Walters, so perfect for lunch. I had an excellent bulgogi on rye and generous portion of fries. My friend had a vegetarian sandwich that he said was good. And the staff insisted on my friend's sandwich being free due to a minor error--we didn't even ask.
