My husband and I have dined here a few times now. We stumbled in one day just to try it out. We were beyond pleasantly surprised. We like a couple of restaurants in Avalon, but many of them just seem to be lacking (effort from staff, food, cleanliness etc). The Cape and its staff always make us feel welcome and like they are truly happy to have us in. That is an art that so many places lack nowadays. We appreciate all of their attention and effort that they make.
We decided to eat upstairs and were told that they add gratuity to your bill automatically. As a former server from years ago, I don't have a problem with this. They are running up and down those stairs all night long. Carrying drinks and meals. The whole time we were waited on (every time we have been here), our servers are always so friendly and willing to answer our questions and offer suggestions as to what their favorites are.
Our delicious drinks came out in a timely manner. Our drinks, a Paloma (which was excellently balanced, not on the sweet side, exactly how I prefer them) and an Old Fashioned. Which must have been delicious because he ordered a second!
Followed by appetizers (shrimp ceviche, spicy tuna roll and bobotie crepes). The ceviche was outstanding. The chunks of fresh coconut, tomatoes and avocado (and some kind of little pepper with a snappy little bite) all perfectly played against one another! It was a perfectly balanced bite! The spicy tuna roll was of course so good. Not the star of our table though. The bobotie crepes were such a fantastic surprise. My husband enjoyed them so much. The crepes were delicate, yet they held the hardy combination of ground beef, raisins, spices and sauce wonderfully. They were a sweet and savory experience.
Then on to entrees. I had the halibut with curry on coconut rice. Oh my heavens! Amazing! The fish was cooked to perfection. It flaked into thee best little bites, snuggled next to the rice (which honestly, I would have been tickled to have just a big ole bowl of the rice and sauce! That was for me, my favorite along with the ceviche). I didn't get to try my broccolini because at this point, I was so full from our appetizers and my entree (very happily satiated! But in the best kind of "I'm full" way! I didn't feel heavy or stuffed or uncomfortable like I would have if I ate the same amount elsewhere. That to me is such a testament as to How they are preparing our food. Simple fresh food prepared deliciously!). Let's not forget my husbands steak and frites with the chimichanga sauce. He's not one to get excited about food like I do. He did however, on his own accord use the words "outstanding" for his steak. It was cooked brilliantly medium rare. The chimichanga sauce was delicious (he popped some of that on my rice and it was so fresh tasting!).
We always order dessert, but I was such a glutton with my appetizers and rice that I couldn't even think about coffee (we will have to go back and eat backwards next time! Pretty sure I said that the last time we were there).
I don't know how to wrap this up! Other than we highly recommend The Cape. Oh and their bathrooms were so tidy and clean as well as the balcony and inside of the restaurant. Having a balcony open, it can get hectic but they managed a full balcony of tables (big and small parties) efficiently and always with pleasant demeanors.
I do recommend that if you are eating inside that you take a little jacket or sweater (it feels amazing, but it can be a touch cold).
Can't wait to go back! Definitely try The Cape if you haven't been. You will so enjoy your experience there! I hope you love it as much as we do!
On a side note, I don't remember exactly what we ordered the last time we were there, except the spinach salad! And we both remember it and said at the time we were eating it, that it was hands down thee best spinach salad we had ever eaten. It was so well balanced. Crunchy. Salty sweet. Delicious dressing! Just a wonderful salad!!
