The Best MICHELIN Guide Hotels in Tokyo

"It’s a rare Tokyo hotel where you’re in touch with nature, aside from a distant view of Mount Fuji — but the Capitol Hotel Tokyu is anything but typical. Here, surrounded by greenery on the edge of the Imperial Palace, guests can use the local flora as their calendar: camellias mean winter, cherry blossoms spring, and the red-orange-yellow leaves of the maple tree are a sure sign of fall." - The MICHELIN Guide

The Capitol Hotel Tokyu

"How did it strike you on arrival?Sometimes history repeats itself, and we're better off for it. Upon opening in 1963, the original hotel was an instant classic, and after a complete overhaul—rebuilt within a gleaming 29-story skyscraper—the look is a sensational refresh of Japanese design. The architect, Kengo Kuma, is currently working on the stadium for Tokyo's 2020 Olympic games, and the hotel showcases his finesse right from the high-ceiling lobby, with its glassy staircases and the Kuma signature, sculptural wooden latticework climbing the walls and ceiling. Nice. What’s the crowd like?Considering the locale (the district itself is all politics, home to the likes of the prime minister), expect to rub shoulders with an older, professional crowd. The good stuff: Tell us about your room. The hotel's 251 guest rooms and 13 suites drive home a minimal, refined Japanese aesthetic. The Premier King especially showcases that smooth elegance throughout just more than 680 square feet. The textures are serene: Concentric, overlapping circles bring pattern to gray carpets, like ripples during rainfall; beds are banked with light wood and glowing washi paper lanterns; panoramic windows close flush with sliding paper screens or open up to views of the lush flora surrounding the Imperial Palace below. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?The bathrooms are all neat and warmly lit, some with separate rainfall showers and soaking tubs next to windows. The products, made by Themae, are French and a perfect match: Inspired by the Japanese tea ceremony, they're infused with the combined essence of green, white, black, and rooibos teas. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word?Wi-Fi is fast and free in the rooms. But in the rare chance that it's not as high-speed as needed, the hotel has often, almost heroically, provided guests with personal hotspots. Room service: Worth it?Two of the hotel's venues handle room service. The lobby's Origami restaurant and pastry shop is open all day and is best for lunch items: An international mix of curries, soups, and sandwiches (omurice will hit the breakfast spot). Suiren, the other option for room service, has such artfully plated seasonal fare that you'll want to consider eating in the garden-side restaurant. Both, however, will cost a pretty penny. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay?Unless a pool is mandatory, serious business types will enjoy just how refined it is." - Keith Flanagan

Wow! The Capitol Hotel was certainly one of the finest stays of my life. My partner and I came for our honeymoon and were blown away by the service, amenities, and the room itself. The staff were all wonderful. There were so many touches that made our stay easier and more pleasurable! I really cannot express enough how amazing the staff at this hotel is. The location is also really convenient. Though in a bit of a chiller area, within a 5 minute walk there is plenty to see. Pretty much all big attractions within the city are easily accessible by train in less than 15 minutes. I would encourage anyone to stay here!

Had a great stay with the family. We got conjoining rooms for our family of four, and there was plenty of space. It was on a high floor, so the view was great. The bathroom was very nice and the rainfall style shower had great water pressure. It is not in an active neighborhood, but there is a busy street just a five minute walk away with good restaurants. I would definitely recommend staying here.

Google
Mixed Start but Pleasant Stay Initial communication with the hotel was confusing due to a staff misunderstanding regarding my name and reservation date, despite multiple confirmations. However, once resolved, the rest of my stay was enjoyable. The rooms were spacious, beautiful city views and well-appointed, though some hardware (like telephones and temperature control) felt outdated. Overall, service was excellent, and I had a comfortable visit.

Google
The rooms were spacious, spotless, and beautifully modern with a touch of Japanese flair. I especially loved the convenience of having both a subway station and a 7-Eleven directly beneath the hotel—accessible by elevator! My husband and I found ourselves stopping into the 7-Eleven multiple times a day. The location felt central, and with the subway right there, it was easy to get around the city. My only wish is that the immediate area around the hotel had been more walkable—while shopping and cafés were just a 10-minute walk away, the hotel itself wasn’t situated directly on a retail street. .

Google
This is not a bad hotel, the rooms are spacious and the staff is friendly. It's a bit out of the way from great dining and entertainment. The TV doesn't have a lot of international channels but other than that this is a good place. I don't love the line to the breakfast restaurant in the morning.

We really loved our one week stay here. The hotel location was great - connected to subways in B2 by a lift. Service by staff was personalised and impeccable. It was a fantastic base for day trips and excursions. Well done for top notch hospitality 💕, would gladly stay here again.

Google
This hotel should have a higher rating. Great location, amazing staff, large rooms for Tokyo. We stayed 4 night in June because we had points, but again, this place should be way higher and I would 100% stay here again.

Google
It’s actually a very nice hotel, good location and comfortable rooms. That said, I am taking off stars for a few reasons. Firstly, the offerings at the overpriced breakfast are just too limited. Secondly, there was no recognition of my iPrefer status at all. Thirdly, there is smoking allowed in the bar which is really tough for non-smokers. There is no pool or spa area so amenities at the hotel are also limited.||All in all I have found the five star experience disappointing in Japan. it’s all very regimented and there is no room for personal touch or attention. ||Would I stay here again - probably if on business - but I will try a few other hotels first.

Yelp
We greatly enjoyed staying at the Capitol Hotel Tokyu. The location was nice, there's a 7-11 on premise and a Starbucks very close by, the on site restaurants are good, the subway station is an elevator ride away, the staff was so sweet and accommodating, and the hotel was immaculately clean. Hie shrine is a short walk away and it's so gorgeous and peaceful there. We would definitely stay here in future! There were no negatives, from check in to check out, this hotel deserves every one of its good ratings.

Yelp
Absolutely the best hotel I have ever stayed in. The service and facilities are impeccable. The staff are the most generous and professional I have ever encountered. I cannot recommend this hotel enough, because it has been my home away from home for years.

Yelp
This hotel exceeded my expectations. I was on the hunt for a hotel during the xmas holidays when reviews on a number of travel sites referenced this spot. I was able to book 2 rooms that were connecting. Website did not have a lot of pictures, so I was unsure of the size. All that anxiety was for naught. Pros: Service. Top notch. From valets to room service, everyone that I interacted with was friendly and helpful. Location. Located in a government area, so a lot of security and very quiet. Plus, convenient to the subway (there is an elevator within the hotel that takes you downstairs to the subway, 7 eleven & coffee shop). Walking distance to Roppongi or Imperial Palace. Views. Gorgeous views from both rooms. I loved leaving the shades up at night for the views. Comfort. Rooms are large and spacious. Beds are comfortable and large. Very large bathroom. Everything was very clean, as you'd expect. Quiet. Hallways are quiet, streets are quiet, it's even next to the hie shrine. Gym. Very clean and staff immediately wipes all machines after use. Cold water available. Only a few treadmills. (Everyone dresses very conservative at the gym. I'm not use to wearing so much clothing when I exercise.) Con: I would say the food is too pricy, but you are walking distance to many options, so it doesn't matter. I had considered booking the Ritz, buy I had a much better experience here compared to my last 3 stays at Ritz's. I would definitely return.

Yelp
What a fantastic hotel. The location is wonderful - right by the National Diet, the Japanese parliament. It is quiet at night amongst the hustle of Tokyo, but centrally located close to the Imperial Palace. The hotel is connected to a business building which means WIN WIN - there is a 7-11 (mecca in Japan) and two subway stations connected where you don't even have to go outside! Taxis are always lined up, so there is never a wait if you want to be driven vs. subways. The staff is excellent and we had no communication issues at the hotel. I would say these are more Western style rooms. A huge room with a real king bed, a western toilet, large shower and tub, with an expansive window overlooking the city and temple next door. Room service was just okay, but why are you ordering in when you are in JAPAN?!?! We were there for 8 days and the cleanliness was excellent the entire time. Will return soon!!!

Yelp
Really underrated hotel in a great part of Tokyo. Definitely check this hotel out for a more Japanese experience vs the average Hyatt or spg hotel. The decor is super luxurious but is still definitely modern Japanese-- lots of wood and a very zen atmosphere. This was especially nice to come back to since Tokyo is such a crazy city. Most rooms have a traditional wood + paper partition that makes the rooms so beautiful! A porter will take your bags after you check in and personally show you to your room. It's a little bit much, but they'll give you a lengthy walk-around inside the room showing you every switch and knob. An Aux cable is provided in the bathroom so you can blast music while you shower. We opted for the buffet breakfast option in the mornings. While the buffet selection isn't as large as western chain hotels, all of their dishes were top-quality. You can opt choose a Japanese set breakfast or western style one instead of the buffet. The hotel is directly on top of 2 subway stops so getting around town is easy. You're always only a few stops away from all of the main tourist attractions. The hotel is across the street from the restaurant area in Akasaka, which means you'll find a ton of local dining options and bars. The imperial palace is within walking distance as well!

Yelp
One of the best hotels I've been to and by far the best bathroom. Great service and the breakfast buffet is impressive. Would love to stay here again.

Yelp
Very good modern hotel at very reasonable rates. *** Came here Oct '14 I couldn't have been happier with everything from this hotel. The prices, location, convenience, service, quality of rooms, and much of the amenities far exceeded my expectations. The value was good, or at least a family member of mine was able to obtain a very attractive corporate at a very reasonable 25,000 japanese yen, or around US$240/night. At a city like this, I would have expected to pay close to double that amount. The premises are clean, modern, quiet, and visually pleasing. It may be an older building, but its hard to tell because it has been renovated so well. My room was spotless, had newer amenities, was well insulated from noise within and from outside the building. I was not far from the elevator, but I could seldom ever hear that. The regular room I stayed in was wonderful. The space was entirely clean, and housekeeping always took care of the room immaculately each day. It was surprisingly spacious, and almost felt like a suite. The bed was very comfortable. The views at the 25th floor were welcoming. The showers worked great in that I had no issue at all in getting the desired water temperature and pressure anytime during the day. Wifi is already included in the price, and it seems reasonably quick for something from a hotel. I enjoyed the fact that each room had its own temperature control. Sadly, I was not able to adjust the in room temperature any cooler than 65 F, but that is far more welcoming to me than much of the warmer indoor temperatures i encounter during the cooler months in Japan. The location is very convenient. I thought it was great that the hotel is tucked away in a more quiet part of tokyo, I believe in the Asakara district, not far from the Diet building and the Imperial Palace yet its also fairly convenient. If you take the hoel lift to the bottom, you can also walk to the JR subway lines in a few mins. I think the closes subway station is Kokkai-gijidomae. Service is great. On more than a few occasions, we pestered the staff to make restaurant reservations for us and advise on travel plans. Not once did we succeed in frustrating them. The hotel restaurant did a good job with a more traditional Japanese breakfast, and offered a buffet as well, although that was not included in the price of my hotel room. It could be different for others. For a more budget friendly option, there is a cafe and bakery right outside the basement level, on the way to the JR subway lines. I do not think they are owned by the hotel, however. Overall, I couldn't be happier with The Capitol Hotel Tokyu!

Yelp
Really enjoyed staying at this hotel! The room - We had a Deluxe room, which was better than I expected. There was a lot of floor space, the traditional Japanese door dividers, large comfortable bed, huge windows with a view of the government building, wonderful shower and tub area (there was a HUGE rainfall shower that had awesome pressure, probably more water pressure than legally allowed in California) and a toilet/bidet. Hotel concierge - Concierge was extremely helpful before and during my stay. I emailed the hotel using the contact form to ask them for recommendations for a kaiseki dinner and they provided me with multiple options and helped me secure the reservation (I had to submit my credit card information to make the reservation since the restaurant I ended up choosing was $300 per person. I didn't feel comfortable providing my credit card information over email, so I ended up calling the hotel to finalize the reservation). During my stay, the concierge helped me confirm with my car company what time I was going to get picked up from the hotel to go to the airport. Also, when I had questions about how to take the train to a certain location, the concierge helped me with the trains and wrote down all of the transfers I had to make which really helped! Amenities - Free WIFI (very important!), huge collection of toiletries in the room (shaving gel, shower cap, razor, bath salts for the tub, brush, bath scrub towel, q-tip, cotton pads, tooth brush and paste. Room slippers, bath robe, set of pajamas, air freshner spray, shoe horn, humidifier machine (just ask them which button means what, you don't want to end up like my husband and pressing the "fan" button - it was SO LOUD at night with the "fan" setting!). Free bottle of water, coffee, tea. I felt like it was never ending stuff that made me feel at home! I especially enjoyed the Cherry Blossom bath salts which were perfect to use to soak in the tub after a long day out. Location - Easy 30 minutes from Haneda airport. There's also two train stations reachable at the basement level of the hotel which is connected to 4 subway lines. It's still a bit of a walk to get to the train, but I'm not sure how much closer you can get to the train door than this. Just make sure to note that the hotel is at Exit 6 keep following the signs for Exit 6 so that you don't take the long way back! It's only a few stations away from Ginza. The immediate surroundings is quiet since it's mainly office/government worker area. At some points it felt awkward for my husband and I to walk around in super casual California wear while a lot of people around us were in suits, staying at the hotel and going to work meetings, etc. but we soon got over it! There's also a 7-11 at the basement level if you want some drinks (I tried a Starbucks strawberry milk and a lipton lemon tea from the fridge section!) or snacks. Breakfast at Origami - Breakfast was a little expensive around $42 USD per person however it was a good assortment of items. You can choose between the Capitol hotel buffet, American Buffet or Japanese Buffet - each of these allows you access to the buffet area, however the difference is that you get extra side items that they bring to your table. For example, we got the Capitol buffet which came with an order of eggs done in the style of your choice while the Japanese buffet came with porridge. The general buffet area had fruit slices, juice, the cutest and delicious pastries, cereal, toast, sardines, bacon, potato, cold pasta salad, french toast, oatmeal, and more! My negative points... the room smelled like B.O. I think it's probably a mix of the room and the deodorizer that is used by the toilet (my husband smelled a similar smell at the airport toilets). I would smell it when I first walked in, but then I would forget the smell after that. My husband however, couldn't get it over it. Even though we used the air freshner provided in the room, the smell wouldn't go away. Also, another negative, there's a chaise in the room that felt like it was made out of cardboard. I thought it would be comfortable and soft so I could snuggle into it and look out at the view, but nope, it was practically rock hard.

Yelp
Best hotel in Tokyo - by far! It's clean. Modern. Safe. The staff are exceptional in their aim to please. It's connected to 3 different subway metro lines. I will return here and recommend this hotel to everybody I know. The room was very nice size and the shower bathtub enclosure is amazing. Wonderful place!

Yelp
It's a pretty fancy hotel. Friendly service and the room is super nice. The gym is free to use but you must be wearing sneakers to use it or you can rent a pair from them.

Yelp
Lovely, comfortable, quiet hotel. Connected directly to the subway station, which makes getting around a breeze. I love the layouts of the super spacious rooms, which include sliding Japanese partitions that allow you to completely open up the space. The bathrooms are amazing, and I particularly love the cable they provide so you can play music from your phone into the bathroom speakers - which are also in the shower! All that + the unparalleled service make for a great hotel choice in Tokyo.

Yelp
Comfortable hotel in a quiet neighborhood with very helpful concierge service. We stayed at the Capitol Hotel Tokyu for our first three nights in Japan. Our room had "Japanese" style moving partition doors between the different spaces in the room, including the bathroom. The bed was very comfortable and we slept well, despite jet lag. The concierge/manager "Michael" was incredibly helpful during our stay. He assisted us with booking a ryokan and restaurants that would accommodate our very particular dietary restrictions. The concierge desk really gave us top service in helping to book other parts of our trip to Japan. The nearby neighborhood is quiet at night (it looks like a government/business district), but the hotel is directly connected to multiple subway train lines, and it's easy to get around the city. Breakfast was at two in-hotel restaruants, one with a Western/Japanese buffet and the other with a Japanese set menu. We didn't try the restaurant with a set menu breakfast (because they couldn't make vegetarian food), but the buffet had many different selections and, for example, we could get either Japanese rice porridge with different condiments (pickles, dashi, seaweed, etc.) or western-style omelettes. We did not go to any of the in-hotel restaurants for lunch or dinner.
