The Best Bars in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater Phoenix

"Enter through an unobtrusive side door adjacent to sister restaurant Hula’s Modern Tiki to find this intimate, wood-paneled speakeasy. The Captain’s Cabin is a cross between a ‘40s-era Tahitian sailor bar and the cozy captain’s cabin of a boat, and turns out some of the city’s best tiki drinks. Barkeep David Muhlstein (aka “Captain David”) has mastered the art of tiki, whipping up classics such as the mai tai, hurricane, painkiller, and zombie that are complex and devoid of the syrupy sweetness often associated with the genre. Original cocktails such as The Wench, which pairs Jamaican rum with Amaro Montenegro, are destined to become modern classics in their own right." - Nikki Buchanan

Hidden gem next to Hula's under the red 🚨 Bartender was friendly and we ended up having a pleasant conversation with the customer at the bar. Drinks were boozy and tasted delicious. An adventurous private night we really enjoyed 🥂

The Captain’s Cabin, tucked beside Hula’s near 7th Street and Camelback in midtown Phoenix, is a hidden tiki gem where a late ’40s Tahitian sailor’s bar meets modern-day craft cocktail culture. Open only Thursday through Saturday evenings, guests enter through a whimsical “porthole” door and are transported into a cozy, nautical-inspired lounge anchored by Captain David, who crafts both classic tiki drinks and inventive rum-forward creations with precision. On our visit, we sampled one of the menu cocktails and also asked for an “off-menu” creation—both expertly balanced and beautifully made. A highlight was *The Wench*, a bold and layered cocktail built with Amaro Montenegro, Wray & Nephew Overproof Rum, Velvet Falernum, Dry Curaçao, lime, pineapple, and Angostura syrup. With its playful yet intimate setting, friendly service, and light bites available from Hula’s, The Captain’s Cabin is the perfect spot for catching up with friends, a fun date night, or even a solo adventure at the bar.

The small but mighty Tiki bar. Captain Dave runs the show single-handed and makes it all worthwhile. The rum selection is fantastic for being such a small bar.

I first heard about the Captain’s Cabin from my dad, who (like myself) had never visited before; despite that we had eaten at Hula’s next door once. Last weekend we stopped by, and let’s just say we were NOT disappointed! Having it been my first time in a tiki bar, I had a very pleasant experience! The bar is very small and intimate, but very cozy in terms of the atmosphere. There’s tons of cool pieces of art and tchotchkes scattered throughout the bar, and service was great! I saw another review that mentioned how this is considered a speakeasy and honestly that’s the best way to describe it. Keep in mind that there is no food here, only drinks - so I would highly recommend swinging by Hula’s if you get hungry! Besides that they have such a huge variety of interesting mixed drinks and cocktails. I had a Mai Tai while my dad tried the Zombie. Mine was a bit on the stronger side, but nonetheless delicious and refreshing! I love how they provided plenty of mint sprigs to snack on as a garnish. All in all I was very happy with my experience, and can’t wait to return soon! Highly recommend checking them out for a truly unique tiki bar experience!

What a cool speakeasy! It’s right next to Hula’s and I definitely walked right past it without realizing it. In true speakeasy fashion there isn’t a sign just a single door with a red light. The interior decor is incredible, with great attention to detail. The Captain/bartender was amazing! He fit the role perfectly and made time to take to every customer. The tiki drinks were so fun and reasonably priced considering they were strong. It’s a small space that doesn’t take reservations, so be prepared to wait but it’s worth it!

The natural wood walls and ceiling makes it Smell so good inside (like palo santo-in case you are a spiritual person, you will get the reference) Our captain, a.k.a. Bartender was super friendly. It is a rum bar, but they can make you other drinks as well

We left Tiki Oasis to try this Tiki Bar and we did the right thing! Small bar location right to the left of Hula's Tiki Uptown, this 25 or so seat bar is off the charts! Every drink is creative and expertly executed. The bartenders here are a cut above, and every detail is elevated. We had a Painkiller and a Three Dots & a dash and both were some of the best cocktails we have ever had. Strongly recommend this unique place.
