Montreal Architect Launches Petition to Reopen 9th Floor Eaton’s Restaurant | Eater Montreal

"Once the Round Room restaurant of Eaton’s in Toronto, this art moderne masterpiece is now known as the Carlu and is primarily used for corporate events; I point out that its owner is restaurant group Oliver & Bonacini, not Ivanhoé Cambridge, which makes it a cautionary example of a landmark dining room becoming effectively private." - Tim Forster

Went to The Carlu to attend an event. Easily accessible from TTC College Subway station without exiting out of the building. I was impressed with the architecture of the building and its history. A grand venue with lots of rooms and conference hall. We went to attend a corporate event. Had a great lunch served by their catering team. As I was chatting with the local staff, they mentioned it’s was opened in 1930 and subsequently underwent renovation in early 2000s. Glad they maintained this heritage art deco historic landmark. I even liked the round room and the ceiling design was amazing.

The Carlu is a Toronto landmark with some serious history. Originally opened in 1930, it was designed by French architect Jacques Carlu and was once home to Eaton’s swanky concert hall. After sitting abandoned for years, it was beautifully restored in the early 2000s, and you can still feel that old-school elegance today. The Art Deco design is stunning clean lines, bold details, and that iconic Round Room with its perfect acoustics. If you appreciate historic spaces with character, this place is worth seeing. It’s one of the best preserved examples of 1930s architecture in the city and a great spot for anyone who loves classic design.

Today Carlu is a grand event venue located in College and Yonge in downtown Toronto. But if u ask me why visit this place...here are the facts why: 1) This is a Toronto landmark that was visited by the best of the yesteryears ⭐ stars like Frank Sinatra. 2)Designed by famous French architect Jacques Carlu and opened in 1930 3)Was once home to Eaton’s famed concert hall. 4) Was abandoned for years, and fell into disrepair for decades. Government stayed the demolition. But the place was without tenant. 5) Finally it was restored to it's prior glory in 2003. 7) Visit to explore the beautiful Art Moderne architecture which is stunning clean lines, bold details of gold ,silver and crystal. 8)Check out the Round Room: This is known for its perfect acoustics. But apart from that chk the crystal fountain there along with the original murals all around the room painted by Carlu's wife. 9) This place is now managed and owned by Oliver and bonacini. 9) To see Toronto's glory days from 1900s visit this restored space and appreciate the grandeur and the classic designs from yesteryears.

I attended an event at The Carlu and thought the venue was really nice. I didn’t expect it to handle so many people, but it did very well. The equipment used was great, making everything run smoothly. The catering was also good, though I’m not sure if it was provided by the venue or someone else. Overall, it was a good experience, and I would recommend The Carlu for big events.

I recently attended a tech event at The Carlu, and I was impressed by the spaciousness of the venue. It provided ample room for the event, allowing attendees to move around comfortably. The open layout added to the overall experience, creating a welcoming and inviting atmosphere. I appreciated the attention given to providing a spacious environment that enhanced the event.

This venue is so fascinating. It’s an Art Deco oasis tucked away in the sky, the perfect spot to take an event from special to incredible. They have a serious issue with parking, so if your event requires large support vehicles, start planning early.

The banquet hall on the 7th floor of the Carlu building is gorgeous. Attended a fundraiser here and the hall, rooms, food, and service was incredible. Washrooms are a bit dated though. Parking is very tricky which is why valet parking is a must if you are booking this venue for an event. It makes for a super upscale and fancy night out.

Yelp
The Carlu is a really nice venue with classic Art Deco style, lots of character, and a great setup for events. The Round Room also looks amazing. It has that old school elegance without feeling outdated. The Carlu is very spacious so it would be perfect for events. Overall, a solid venue if you want an event location that is upscale for different type of corporations.

Yelp
The Carlu is located on Yonge and Carlton and is close to College station. I came here for an event in the evening and had a very enjoyable experience. We drove here and I was extremely glad that Valet parking was included in the event ticket pricing so I didn't have to worry about finding a parking lot and then making a trek to The Carlu, which I extremely thankful for because walking in heels combined with crazy Toronto winter weather is not fun! Once in the building, you simply take the elevator for the seventh floor and you're there. When I got to the space, I absolutely loved it! I could see it functioning well during the day as a conference area and in the evening for a gala gathering. Additionally, the long hallway where people could mix and mingle could also function perfectly for vendors at a conference. Not to forget, this place is licensed for alcohol with a full-bar service is super awesome! My only criticism of this space is that the bathrooms needed a bit of an upgrade/updating. It was clean and functioning but it could have been a bit nicer. Overall, if you're looking for a space to host an event downtown Toronto, I highly recommend this place! Haha, maybe when I get married in the future, this could be a potential venue... haha, we'll see!

Yelp
Very beautiful modern venue. I was in attendance for a work-related symposium and was pleasantly surprised. I have been going to school in the area (at RyersonU) for a number of years and didn't realize that this existed! PROS + very beautiful and modern venue, with great stands and stations for coat check, beverages, etc. + top notch stages, audio & visual equipment, social media capabilities (though I'm not sure if it was outsourced or not) and seating. CONS - hidden in the building connected to the College subway station, it becomes easy to miss/get lost while searching for the Carlu. However, given the busyness of Toronto, this is forgivable.

Yelp
I finally had a chance to check out this event space after having heard a fair bit about it. I must say, as far as venues go, it's pretty lovely. The fact that the party I was attending had a 20s theme really worked well with the Carlu's art deco style. The majority of the staff were pleasant; however, a bartender rather rudely told us that until all the doors were open, we had to wait to get a drink. The party was scheduled to start at 8:30 according to the invite, but the room wasn't set up until 9. So we had to sit around waiting. Perhaps the bartender realized she was rather curt because she made a point to come over to us in the lobby and let us know that the bar was open (though the doors were still closed for the record). Besides that run in, it was enjoyable and I really hope I get to attend more functions at this venue.

Yelp
Came to The Carlu for a corporate holiday party with my company. We had booked the entire venue for the evening and hosted a masquerade party. The venue was very classy and elegant. I appreciated the different atmospheres that you would step into as you moved from room to room. Some resembled more of an art gallery setting, while others were more like a restaurant lounge with a live jazz ensemble playing. Getting into The Carlu was confusing for some, as it is not entirely clear depending on how you walk into College Park.

Yelp
Nothing like the old world elegance of a Carlu wedding day ! Stepping into a spacious venue with all visuals and clear quality attention to style everywhere . Now with the added bonus of ' O and B" being the owners; the catering and wedding planning will be done with the flair and experience of the best in the City . Any bride would dream of this as her perfect location for one of the best days of her life! Her wedding day .

Yelp
ive been to the carlu several times. twice for a couple of parties and once to see as a possible wedding venue. as you exit the elevators you face a very long and spacious lobby. within this lobby is access to two bars and a few rooms. closest to college street they have a smaller lounge room that at the time was a place where you could smoke. im not sure if that still exists. from that room is a door which connects to the most beautfiul ballroom in the venue. this room is circular and grand with tall ceilings, ample space for tables and a dancefloor. this room was featured in the movie cinderella man to great effect as a classy nightclub for a dinner scene in the 1930s with lots of beautiful dresses and snazzy tuxes. to me this is no surprise and a perfect choice for that time period because it does have that flair; you expect to be hearing benny goodman playing in the background. that large ballroom connects to a smaller room that might during a wedding be used as a room for the ceremony, or a press room at film events...either way ive seen it dressed up and though its simple in design as a small rectangle, its adorned with lovely candles that hang simply from the ceilings on the walls. finally across the way there is a huge event hall that houses a stage and a large enough space for an even bigger sit down affair. i dont recall anything that stands out about that part of it as i always remember it being filled with chairs. so as a venue in total, i dont feel like there are any others like it in the city - especially if you judge it by the circular 30s style ballroom. they seem to have very specific rules with regards to the way they served alcohol during wedding celebrations, though you could choose between different caterers that they offered. we didnt end up going here, but i do enjoy the variety of its rooms whenever i happen to come here for a party.
