The Developer of the Ritz-Carlton Is Opening a Food Hall to Make up for the Carts it Displaced | Eater Portland

"Opening July 24 in Ankeny Square on the North Park Blocks, I see this food cart pod is meant to serve as a new home for many former Alder Street carts; Friends of the Green Loop championed the project, raised funds for it, and secured $269,000 from the city budget to expedite the pod, which will launch with a number of carts including Shanghai’s Best, Baghdad Iraqi Grill, and Fernando’s Alegria." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

The good: there are a good number of trucks, at least 9-10, almost all open. All mouthwatering. Everyone was friendly. The food we had was really fantastic. Would eat here again. The semi cons: while it will be great when done, the construction means less seating and more dirt. It wasn’t a problem and will give the carts access to public water. So it should pay off. Also, it seemed a little dead, even though it was around lunchtime.

Honestly comparative to other food spots and vendors, you will not meet a better bunch of humans trying to find their place in the world. I've tried every food truck and you can find any dish to your liking. Considering this, everyday these folks come and offer not only hot and delicious food but warm family service in a rough part of town. Take the place as it is but appreciate it for what they offer and be HUMAN.

Overrated. We came to Portland for the weekend and read about the amazing food truck scene with this pod being one of the best. We came on a Saturday afternoon and it was dead with a lot of the carts closed. The food was average at best. The highlight of the experience was the friendly staff at each of the food trucks.

A convenient pod of trucks close to Powells Bookstore and Sizzle Pie. The food was decent but not the greatest for the prices. I’m glad I checked it out, but I likely wouldn’t go back as the location doesn’t feel the safest at night.

Lots of food options and you can eat it all on the double decker bus.

They gave me a glass of milk with cinnamon for 6. 00. I had to throw it out...

The Cart Blocks is in a great location, next to so many stores and coffee shops to explore in downtown/NW. But, the food cart scene in Portland has leveled up compared to a decade ago and I feel The Carts Blocks has a few improvements they need to implement to make this food cart pod a great place to go. First big problem is the lack of covered seating, when we arrived it was a rainy, grey day (like it is most of the time in Portland) but there was no sufficient covering over any of the seating. The only sort of covering offered was not even water proof, with water dripping through it onto the seating making everywhere you could sit wet and uncomfortable. Secondly, there is zero heating in this food cart pod unlike other food cart pods such as Midtown Beer Garden and Hawthorne Food Asylum. As such, this makes it even additionally uncomfortable as no one wants to eat outside in 30-40 degree weather without a heating source. Lastly, the seating at this location could use an uplifting, it just doesn't look great and is very barebones because of the reasons I listed previously. I hope The Cart Blocks can improve on all three of these sections because they have a great group of food carts I like to go to but I almost never can eat my food there since the seating experience is so poor. If these improvements can be made, I think this food cart pod would be on level with the best in the city. It is definitely worth a visit and I will continue to support the amazing food carts here!
