London’s Best Sunday Roasts | The Best Roast Dinners in London | Eater London

"There are countless, largely indistinguishable pubs masquerading as gastropubs when it comes to midday on a Sunday. Nowhere more so than in the Walthamstow area. But, at the Castle, nestled in a residential area to the south of Walthamstow’s bougie little “village,” the roast is worth going out for. Three protein options, usually beef, chicken, and pork, plus a vegetarian nut roast, come with well-seasoned veg, such as roasted carrots, spiced red cabbage, parsnips, greens, crisp roast potatoes, and a Yorkshire pudding. It is a generous serving of a consistent and accomplished roast, and critically, the gravy is of the highest, richest quality." - Adam Coghlan

My wife and I ordered Sunday roasts and were served very sad looking dishes. I have seen some of the pictures other people have posted and whatever they gave us looks nothing like theirs. We did come slightly past 5 pm, which means they may not have had all of the ingredients but THEY COULD HAVE TOLD US. They simply said they didn’t have any more beef roasts, so we ordered a veggie one and a chicken one. That’s it, no other warnings. By far some of the saddest roasts we’ve had. Paying £19.95 for the chicken one and about £16 for the veggie one felt outrageous. Won’t come back.

Fabulous Sunday roast, yummy iced coffee with honey, indoor/outdoor seating. Service was friendly and prompt. The burger and fries is fantastic too. A nice neighbourhood vibe with some families, and generally everyone is talking at a reasonable volume (to be fair it was the lunch hour). Good number of bathrooms.

If you’re a parent with kids this is the go to pub in Walthamstow Village, usually busy after school on Fridays and weekends. They do great food and the atmosphere is great if you don’t mind the noise of children, if not maybe try a different pub. Staff are friendly and food is good. A great year round local pub.

Our local - lovely landlord Adam with his helpful team always give good service. A great place for gatherings in the sun of a Friday night after work especially with kids. Indoors is warm & inviting with a piano player and roaring fire and outside is great for noisy kids to run around together as it’s a close so it’s relatively car free.

If visiting for a Sunday Roast, make sure you book a table in advance as it is pretty busy. There are some tables for walk-up, but you need to be in the queue at opening. The menu is good and you have all the options. I had the veggie nut roast which was pretty tasty. If picking hairs I would say slightly too salty. The roast pork looked good too. Price was maybe a little high if I'm honest. Service wasn't great, we were a party of 4 plus 2 kids but the main plates came out spread apart. By the time the last person got theirs, the first had eaten theirs after deciding not to let it go cold. Overall I would say the food was good but at this price and with the service issues I probably won't go back.

We return here every once and a while, and when we do we, remember why! The team and food are absolutely next level beats!! Thanks for your hospitality Castle Pub!! The sweet potato and pardon pepper starters were the best in a long time! The meats in our rump steak, pie and monkfish curry were tender, succulent and done to perfection!! Great quality all around!!

I came here for Sunday roast with some friends and their baby. It was very busy, which also meant it was quite loud. The service was fine and friendly. Food was ok. It was a little bland we all seemed to need extra salt, but despite being a well done roast beef it was still very tender. They did diced parsnips, which I did not enjoy at all and sadly the roast potatoes were dry. But the other trimmings were fine. I would highly recommend booking a table in advance if you want to guarantee a seat. It's located on a residential road and has a little bit of seating outside.

What a terrible experience! I booked a table for 12 at 7.30pm to celebrate my birthday. There was hardly anything left on the menu but the pub was empty. They said they were aware of my booking for nearly a week but they had such a busy afternoon... After taking our orders (nothing any of us wanted but what they had left) they didn't serve us again. When we had to ask the staff if we could order our desserts they said the kitchen closed nearly an hour ago but didn't think to take our dessert order earlier or let us know when it was last orders. There were only 3 other tables so hardly run off their feet The staff were too busy chatting among themselves behind the bar all evening instead of looking after the customers. The waitress said she would let the team know we weren't happy... Completely incompetent. None of us would ever go back which is a shame being my local

Yelp
I really enjoy coming to the village in Walthamstow for visits. There's a feeling here that one isn't "in it alone" in this life as passersby often smile and/or say hello as they move along down the pavement. And, by this, I don't mean just the crazies who've sadly infiltrated this corner of the capital, but actual "normal people". I'm also a fan of "Tetley" the 12 yr. old cat who acts like he's the Emperor of the 'stow, and can be found, very often, on the grounds of the Vestry House Museum soaking up the sun, if there's any to be had. Wow, I've really digressed. Let's move on to a pub called The Castle which is just around the way from the village's main drag. On Monday nights, as luck would have it, they've a pub quiz that's really quite fun, if, however, pretty challenging at times. Our group came in 3rd out of 9 teams, so no prize money or bottle of wine was to be had. It was a hoot to participate though. The food, usual pub grub with a slightly upper-level look and taste, was tasty, but a bit costly. The interior is clean, funky, and replete with both proper tables and comfy sofas alike.

Yelp
I ventured up to East London, to this gastro-pub in Walthamstow Village, well it is actually on the other side of the Village, and not in the Village, as I was told by a local who lives nearby! The birthday girl was down from Suffolk and chose this pub as she was staying nearby. It's a 10 minutes walk from Walthamstow Central Station (Zone 3). It is a 15 minutes journey on the National Rail from Liverpool Street Station, so a quick journey, if coming from the City. Quite a nice pub for the locals. Roomy and lots of tables and sofas to lounge on. I tried the Village Burger with chunky chips and added bacon as extra, or you can add cheese as well. Was well impressed that the burger was actually very tasty and the chunky chips was too and quite a good portion size. The wines were good too. We had a kitty and had a lot of bottles, so they seemed a decent price.

Yelp
Firstly, I would like to introduce myself and my sister, Ross and Ria. We are the owners of The Castle in the Village Ltd. (The Castle Gastro Pub). This is the first and last time I will be writing in response to comments regarding The Castle, so I hope what I write will answer any questions. I love the concept of the review sites. I would love to use constructive criticism from these sites to better my business and give people what they want. If we could use genuine feedback to create and improve our menu and service it would be fantastic. We have received comments in the past and with some I agree, it has helped us grow, thank you. This advice benefits everyone, the community that frequent the pub and us. We have read and heard comments and it has helped us to make the business better and more efficient. The Castle is now a thriving family friendly food pub which is a stark contrast to three years ago, before we took over. Unfortunately these sites can provide platform for fake, malicious and sometimes ridiculous reviews that are not always the truth. This is a shame. I find it disturbing that anyone would take to a review site to talk about a member of staffs physical appearance, one reviewer mentions 'the manager with the pretentious awful moustache'. This quite frankly is not acceptable. This reviewer is known to The Castle and was asked to leave due to her drunken behaviour and foul language towards staff. I am not saying we are always perfect, mistakes happen, but we do strive for excellence and I believe we provide good quality food at a reasonable price. All our meat is free range, our vegetables are delivered daily and our menu is produced by us fresh. Nothing bought in ready made, nothing frozen. Every dish has been designed by our Chefs, from the Burger recipe to the Cheese Sauce on your pasta. We even pipe our own Sausage mix from a recipe our Head Chef James created. How many Gastro pubs could say that? I would like to advise booking on a Sunday for a roast as it does get extremely busy. We will always try to accommodate anyone that hasn't pre-booked but we may not always be able to find a table for you immediately. At peak times we can have up to 90 -100 customers in at any one time, so it may take 30-45 minutes from ordering to receive your food. Nothing is precooked the night before and reheated like many other establishments do. We cook our meat to order. We have recently changed our wet offering, so far these choices seem to have gone down well. Please let us know what you think. I felt obliged to write this response today out of respect for our staff. The kitchen team especially work extremely long hours and are passionate about getting it right. It's not on for business rivals and drunken fools to condemn the work they do. Ross Newham The Castle thecastlegastropub.co.uk

Yelp
Nice modern pub full of books and games (I'm a bored gamer, rather than a board gamer but I have a lot I friends who love them) They had an OK beer range. Most of my friends went for the Trumans Tail Feather....and most of them grimaced when they tasted it, including myself. Persisting with it... I actually found it to be not so bad once you got used to it, but I was alone in this opinion.

Yelp
Really nice pub in Walthamstow, close to the 'Village' area, which is considered to be the posher part of Walthamstow. Set in a residential area, The Castle is a few minutes' walk from Orford Road where there are several shops and restaurants. I used to hate this pub, mainly for it's lack of atmosphere and Ikea furniture, however, the most recent owners have done a great job of making this feel like a proper pub which wouldn't feel out of place in an area like Islington or Primrose Hill. the decor is cosy and art work is displayed on one side of the pub. I've been twice in the last few weeks. Once on a Monday night and once on a Friday. The Monday was very quiet despite the quiz night that was happening, but the food (we had burgers) was delicious and I can't recommend their chips enough! The menu is small and offers gastro pub style food from what I could tell. Expect to pay around £8-10ish. will definitely try and eat here again soon. the Friday night was a lot busier and we managed to get the last seat left. Seemed to be lots of groups of friends and some couples there, catching up, having meals and generally everyone seemed to be having a good time (the age range was around early twenties - mid-forties). All in all this is my new favourite pub in Walthamstow.

Yelp
Food OK but kitchen tends to get overwhelmed when busy and services disappointing, have tried Sunday lunch here twice and both times after mains was told would have to wait 30 mins before we could think about ordering desserts. Would suggest maybe putting a tag on the wine bottle table markers indicating that tables are reserved rather than the cutlery on the table, we had to move table as did not realise the one we had picked and thought empty was already taken. Sorry to say I won't be back again

Yelp
A bit disappointed with somewhere that describes itself as a gastro-pub, no starters, nothing but normal (though perfectly nice) pub fare. No table service although we didn't know and waited for an age at our table before we realised! Shame.

Yelp
A really lovely family friendly pub. A little too noisey for me but it's definitely worth a visit for the food. It's a large pub with a smallbut very nice beer garden out the back.

Yelp
A lovely pub with a chilled, friendly vibe and pretty decent food. Great atmosphere inside with board games for rainy days. Really friendly staff. We both ordered burgers which were delicious and the skinny fries came with the skin on, which was a game changer! That with the garlic mayo was fantastic after an exhausting day - all washed down with a pint. Desserts looked great too but we had no room - planning to go back for a Sunday roast soon.

Yelp
Recently renovated. great beer. Nice food and a really friendly bar maid. Thankfully nolonger anything to do with The Nags Head and therefore now has tasteful decor and is reasonably full every night,

Yelp
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!. Sunday dinner tasted like a £1 frozen Birdseye ready meal. Totally tasteless bland frozen veg and potatoes of very poor quality I felt quite sick after eating this expensive slop. Disgusting food disgusting downright rude arrogant service from the staff and the OWNER. You have to pay upfront so checked my receipt to see how long i waited before my meal arrived' the wait was . .1hour 10mins !!! extremely surly response from staff when asked after 40mins how much longer to wait. On leaving I spoke to the OWNER about the ridiculously long wait. Her excuse about being busy I would have accepted if I hadn't seen other people come into the pub after me being given their food before me. No apology from the owner at all . Her customer service response was to defensively and aggressively imply I was lying and had only waited half an hour for my meal..Even gathering her staff and my server to agree with her !!!!!!. When I challenged this. The OWNER, told my young daughter and I to "get out of her pub". My daughter who talks in whispered tones and quite shy told the owner her customer service is bad. Can you believe this the staff and OWNER ganged up on her too!! My daughter was horrified and shocked. Totally offensive, and appalling behaviour The irony is I have been eating at The Castle regularly for many years . I took my family loads of times my in-laws etc. Introduced friends to The Castle as my favourite pub. Today was the first time back in a while. Must have new owners. Previously the food was good, the staff a little bit more mature and extremely pleasant . we had a good banter with them. The food and service was 1000x better, Other reviews on other sites have mentioned the New Owners disgusting 'bullying''behaviour when customers complain. So seems im not alone. DON'T GO THERE, Besides the food being abysmal the odious OWNER doesn't deserve 1 penny of your money or custom.

Yelp
I think the bad reviews are from before the castle changed hands. It is now my favourite pub in walthamstow. The food is really good, nice wine and beers on draft, the staff are friendly and it's really welcoming. It changed completely for the better when the new landlord took over.

Yelp
This place is ok it just had a revamp. To be honest its a little dull which is a shame. The decor is very nice but it lacks colour and unlike other good pubs in the area doesn't reference the local history of the area, buildings heritage or the local creative community. The food is average and so is the wine, beer and cider list - the place presents itself as a Gastro pub so it should have a sharper selection. We ordered the chicken it was over done and the veg were reheated and lacked flavour....as I said dull. The bar staff were very friendly and welcoming but this place really lack atmosphere and charm - lets hope the atmosphere, clientele, food and drink brighten up......

M P.

Yelp
It's a nice pub...for drinks. Food is average at best. The starter I had was a joke in terms of size and pricing - a single slice of halloumi is not cutting it. Let's not get started with the cheese board. You've seen it from the photo - it's a joke for £8!

Carola M.

Yelp
Handsome place, comfortable atmosphere, wide choice of wines by the glass, interesting ciders and beers on tap, too. The menu looks good (besides the usual burger, duck breast with berry sauce, garlic mashed potatoes and kale looked tempting). I was here, on my own, for a pre-dinner drink and enjoyed the friendly, quick service as well as the free wi-fi. All in all, a really nice place to hang out or have a meal.

Bolanfan d.

Yelp
NASTY OWNER!!AND MANAGE!!this place is fine as long as you don't have an opinion or suggestion or complaint. god help you if you don't like their food and tell them. despite the fact I have always been very complimentary about one or two things on their menu they gave me hell tonight when I gave an honest reasonable opinion on their roast veg and hummous pie with mash. I was still hungry after eating it,the portion was pathetic, even a child would still be hungry . I tried to give my comment in the most polite way I possibly could but was met with defensiveness and aggression. My comments were not validated, they just seem to think they are above complaints, that their food is impeccable and 'who are you to complain 'attitude is all you recieve. I couldn't believe that they could honestly believe this shallow small dish with about qaurter of a courgette and pepper,a tiny dollop of hummous and a thin filo pastry with a small spoon of mash would surfice .They charged about £9 for this pathetic attempt at a vegetarian meal .clearly the chef and those in charge are meeat eaters and don't understand basic nutrition. A meal should be balanced with protein, carbs and vegetables- this meal was not substantial and was not filling and the dish was small and shallow and could hardly be called a 'pie'. I was met with hostility and basically abused and left their fuming. A woman calling herself the owner then at the end of evening came to talk to me. we had a taxi waiting and were about to leave anyhow but as our conversation became heated due to her ridiculing me and continuing to defend the chef and themselves and scoffing at my comments by pulling those 'yeah right' types of faces she ended up telling me to leave and not come back. she couldn't and they could not handle being told the truth or at least my opinion.the customer service is appalling, you would never get this in america. I'm fed up of paying good money for bad food and service. I tried my best trying to explain it was tasty but there just needed to be more of it and/or something more filling, more protein ,to bulk it up but they were quite frankly up their own backsides and she told me(so called owner) as the manager that 'no one EVER complains about their food. its pretentious,over-priced place for the quality and portion sizes and if I can put any of you not going there I will. If you want food there are far more superior places to go in the village than here(the tapas restaurant, amazing food) and if you want a drink the nag's head is a far more down to earth friendlier place. Its a shame as one or two of the bar staff are very nice but this woman who claims to be the owner and the manager with the pretentious awful moustache are quite frankly rude, obnoxious and need retraining in the art of good customer service and making you feeled valued and your opinions validated as a customer.please,do yourself a favour and do not leave the Orford road ..they are not worth the money and they do not deserve to have customers with their condescending attitude .As they say on the Eurovision song contest ..the castle gets 'nil poi'.For them to tell me ' no one complains about the food is a joke..they should start using the internet, there are plenty of complaints about them on the various food/pub guide sites.
