On the Grid : Cathedral of St. Philip Thrift House

"Now, you might think to yourself, "Hey, I'm not buying someone else's garbage." Think again, friend. The key to a great thrift store is the curation by the staff. Does the Thrift House have any idea what they’re doing? Despite a weak selection of music, yes, prize finds are ample. To wit: A shopper recently landed six Duralex shot glasses and a Microsoft baseball cap! We still regret not going in on the full-size air hockey table we once spotted for $30! Bonus sweg boost: They put your stuff in reused high-end retail bags (e.g. Saks, Brooks Brothers, etc.)." - Office of Brothers

I have been going to the Cathedral since 1964. It is beautiful and the organ is the largest in the southeast. The Christmas 11:30 service is magical. The choir is in the balcony thirty minutes before service offically begins. They have additional musicians that evening and a candle light service. It is a holy experience with the flowers and intense filling the air. The sermon is always on point to what is happening in our world. I was baptized there in 1968 and confirmed in 1972. The Easter service is beautiful too.

Beautiful cathedral architecture and interior. Great services and a seemingly strong community resource center. Christmas service is very popular.

We were here for a lecture and were awestruck with the beauty of the architecture and interior detail. We will return to attend a service soon.

I'm not episcopal so I can't say whether or not this is a regular style of service; however I enjoyed it, and it's a beautiful cathedral.

Farmers market every Saturday is fantastic. Check the website for times it closes for winter.

Never attended a service here, but I've been here many times for choral events. The Cathedral is beautiful and the music always sounds amazing. I was most recently there for the Vivaldi concert and hearing Gloria in that Cathedral was incredible! They have amazing choral talent at this place and always host incredible performers as well. Never been disappointed!

I wish I could give negative stars. I regret to share that our experience at this church school was deeply disheartening. We faced instances of bias, and my son was unfairly labeled as a "class clown" at just three years old. The complaints we received from the school about a toddler were disproportionate and, in our view, not in line with his behavior. What's more concerning is that not only some staff members but also certain parents contributed to this negative environment. My child is thriving in kindergarten now, with consistent positive feedback on his intelligence and behavior. It was shocking for us that this institution even suggested therapy for him at such a young age. I urge potential parents to tread carefully and ensure an inclusive and understanding environment for their children.

Yelp
I was looking for a place to leave reviews for weddings, but don't see a wedding-related place to do it, so I came to Yelp. We are Episcopalian and our daughters were both confirmed at St. Philip's. So when our daughter wanted to get married in Atlanta, she chose to get married in the cathedral and it was AMAZING! Stunning, beautiful, and such a great experience!!! PROS: The Episcopal Cathedral is a stunning place for a wedding, just gorgeous, and boy do they know their weddings!!! They have a full staff of ladies that work with you/your wedding planner leading up to the big day, and they direct everything day-of and keep you right on schedule. They make sure the wedding party/parents/grandparents, everyone has a place to be and they know what is coming. The Flower Guild handles all the flowers inside the church, and they also really know their stuff!!! We LOVED everything they did; it was truly a stunning event. The best part was, the wedding ladies were all business --- but they were clearly so excited for the happy couple! After the service when the couple was in the sacristy signing their wedding certificate, the coordinator was practically giddy when she asked Lillie to push a button on a remote . . . and then the church bells started ringing!!! It was truly perfect!!! CONS: One, it is expensive. If you are not a member, there is a fee of $5000, though it is less if you are a pledging member. And if you would like to add any flowers, (only basic altar flowers are included in the fee), that will cost you a pretty penny, too. The Flower Guild knows their stuff; whatever you add will be stunning, but they are not cheap. Two, they take the wedding ceremony seriously. They will not allow your photographer to walk all over taking pics and snapping their flash during the ceremony, though they do allow them to set a stationary camera discreetly in the balcony or in the narthex. This was fine for us, but might not be for some. And they do not allow non-religious music --- no Elton John "Your Song" or such. But the organist is included and the music is truly beautiful.

Yelp
My daughter was married her in July and there could not be a better venue for a wedding in Atlanta than here. OMG!! This is beautiful, astounding, right in the center of buckhead area- seen it for years from the road but what a big Cathedral. I thought I was in Europe. The service was well organized, we had good photographers, the minister was fantastic, just have no words than this is truly Gods house. You must go see if not join!!!

Yelp
Was a member decades ago. My return has many disappointing aspects. The first and main on was the desecration of Saint Mary's chapel, under the altar. It was a most sacred space, used by many for meditaion, counseling, small private weddings, prayer ministry, and when I taught Sunday school, I would take my class down there for lessons. The music room with which they replaced it is a slap in the face of all that is sacred and holy. Saint Mary's name was kept but the glaring upstairs room they use as the "new" chapel is not appropriate for worship. The altar does not have a cross on it. The beautiful old Saint Mary's lecturn isn't being used. The old beautiful marble altar has been parked, so to speak in a corner of a hallway. How utterly disrespectful. The upstairs room is right next to the elevator, which emits an annoying BONG every time it is used, which is often on the Friday healing service. The old Saint Mary's was totally quiet, at the end of a long hall, underneath the main altar of the church, giving it an extra quality of holiness. I don't know what someone was thinking, destroying that lovely place and replacing it with something profane. The other problem I have is the scarcity of handicapped parking close to the Sanctuary. There are many elderly and infirm folks who attend and probably many more who can't because of the lack of accessible parking. The Cathedral I knew for years has changed, not for the better.

Yelp
Being someone who has only attended church service sporadically, and a Lutheran church at that, I was a little intimidated to attend a service at St. Philip. I visited their website first and found lots of useful information that helped quell my anxiety. They have podcasts of the sermons to give you a feel for the tone of the church. They have detailed directions to help you out (where to park, what door to enter, etc.). They even have designated volunteers in green aprons to help answer any questions you may have. On my first visit, I found a volunteer who was incredibly nice. She had come from a Lutheran backround as well and even lead me to the cathedral (this is a big church). She explained what services and times are offered. They even have a small chapel for those who prefer a smaller, more intimate service. She handed me a program and I went in. The program is basically a script of the services. It even has bolding on the parts you are supposed to repeat as well as page numbers for the hymnals to look up in the blue hymnal books located in the pews. The service was fantastic. The reverend even made psychology references, which, being a psych major, helped me to relate on another level. All are encouraged to take Communion if they wish, which is very different from a lot of other places of worship where you have to be a confirmed member of the faith and often that church. This is the most welcoming church I have attended by far and everyone I've met has gone out of their way to make me feel at home. I recommend checking out their Facebook page to get a real sense of the people at St. Philip's. This church has a much more liberal feel to it and encourages you to be yourself.

Yelp
Went there as a visitor for the first Sunday after Lent. it is a pretty progressive congregation theologically compared to some of the other Episcopal churches in town. The cathedral is stunning, the majesty of the service and the organ are great. It is obvious that a lot of rich people go to church here and if you hate rich people this is not the place for you. But they were very, very nice and friendly and the facilities were amazing. We will go back to see more. It was a very spiritual place.
