On the Grid : The Chapel

"The Chapel is one of the few live music venues in the Mission that pulls in some decent names and great unknowns. As the name suggests, the main hall used to be a church which lends to great acoustics and a dramatic look of the cathedral ceiling. There are two bars inside the venue and a lofted viewing area. Attached to the venue is another bar and restaurant called The Vestry which is a great pre-show option for dinner. Its really a one stop shop!" - Avocados and Coconuts

Great venue! Sold Out crowd! Ms. AJ gave that ole church some new life. Well done all around... Those 'Late for the Train' folks served a bit of soul as well.

Google
I liked it as the service was good. Only main complaint is that it was dark. This is my third time there. I think the drinks were a little expensive. ) Though my drinks were free because of an event I attended.) The food was very average. All in all, a nice venue with a good stage and some great people were there. Parking sucked!

Google
Ok so this is a time when we need art and community more than ever so this feels like a sacred place. If I was in my twenties I would come here all the time in order to preserve it “for future generations”. I am in my forties and do appreciate a good sit down and maybe not have the energy to stand (or stay)all night plus driving back and forth 2.5-3 hour round trip. There’s not really any seats but the atmosphere is 11/10, reasonably priced drinks and nice staff all around. A win for humanity.

Google
This is one of the best small venues in SF. The sound is always good, staff are friendly, and the mezzanine space is my fav. They have a lot of fun musicians/bands coming through here as well. Just pick a show and go if you've never been. :)

Google
I love this place for (relatively) intimate concerts. The individuals at the door - and at the bars - are actually NICE - and the acoustics are great. All of that said, unless you score one of the very very few tables up on the small mezzanine, it's a standup concert space otherwise. Best always to get there when doors open.

The venue is amazing! Also got to meet some of the staff and they were awesome and very welcoming! Definitely hope to be back soon!

We celebrated my partner's birthday here and combined it with seeing Fleetwood Macrame. Total success. The staff here were super flexible, prices super reasonable, and the vibe was super chill. First, the core team ate at Curio. Great meal in a super cool setting. Then, the staff dressed up the Private Dining Room super elegantly. Pro tip - bring your own LED candles and 3-5 flower arrangements to make the room sparkle. We started the bday festivities with their apps - so good. Then we brought in our own cake, and they were super on it with plateware, forks, etc. Also had them pour their bubbly, which was a Spanish Cava was really good and super elegant in champagne flutes. The staff made sure empty glasses & plates were bussed right away and it was a quality operation. Our guests also bought tix for the show, so they drifted in and out of the concert to the equally elegant bar or dining room for conversation and really solid drinks from the bar throughout the night. Overall, all the rooms have incredible charm, the staff are super excellent (and you know that from the positive way they all work together - such a good vibe staff!), food is solid, drinks are excellent and the intimate music scene in the Chapel itself is unbeatable. Hope these folks keep on keeping on for a very long time - a very special place!

Google
Beautiful old church turned great small cap venue. Has multiple bars so the wait for alcohol is short and they have water dispensers so you can self serve water at any time! Clean bathrooms. Sound quality is really wonderful and we were lucky the crowd was not roust when we saw John Moreland (acoustic set with just him and a guitar and occasional harmonica) there because his voice is really a star. Balcony is great if you need a little space around yourself or your short like me and want a good view of the stage! Merch sales were in the front lobby so you don’t have to shout over louder bands to buy a shirt or record if someone is playing on stage. Check this venue out, won’t be disappointed with the space!

Yelp
I just saw Chuck Prophet - "Wake The Dead" tour at the Chapel. The show was true Rock and Roll. The place was packed and everyone was having an awesome time. Just a couple of comments. If you want to get in cue to get a good place near the stage or upstairs at one of the small tables with stools make a reservation at the restaurant connected to the Chapel - Curio. Be sure to line up early at one of two entrances to the Chapel through the restaurant. Ask someone at the Bar or at the front desk which entrance will be used for the concert. A shout out to the manager who went out of his way to set up a small table and stools for me and my four friends upstairs, He went above and beyond, so thank you! Also, just a quick note to the Chapel. The light show that night was ridiculous. It took away from the concert, so please think about the best way to use the technology in the future. Please see the attach photograph. If you and your friends need a night out to see some live music at the best small night club in the Bay Are, Matt say check out The Chapel

Yelp
Here for the dB's!! Great dinner at Curio (Cobb Salad with fried chicken strips - excellent!). If you let them know you're here for a show, they get you setup with your show wristband while you're eating, so it's easy to just head in to show when the doors open. As usual, great drink options, up close to the band, and an all around great time!

Yelp
Visited the Chapel for a concert this past weekend, and I think this might be the most affordable music venue in SF. We watched an artist named Kate Nash, and there wasn't much of a line when we arrived so we got in really quick. Upon entering they had a couple of merch tables set up. They have a small bar downstairs and a bar upstairs. We ordered two topo Chico hard seltzers and the total was $13 something, which is usually the cost of one at most music venues. The concert/show itself was great. It wasn't super packed, so finding a spot was easy and we never felt squished inside. The music/sound system was great and the stage is so close that it makes for a very intimate setting. Overall, glad I can finally cross off the chapel off my venue list, and wouldn't hesitate to go to another show here.

Yelp
The Chapel is a fantastic venue nestled in the Mission district located at Valencia between 18th and 19th. We came to watch Brume and enjoyed catching a bite at Curio ahead of the show, which is attached to the bar and the stage. The show was set for all ages. We were stoked to bring our son to catch a local band, which is such a great spot. Checking in was a little clunky since we came through from the restaurant, but everyone was quick to get us checked in and on our way into the venue towards the stage. The sound was great, and we made our way to the front and settled in for a great show.

Yelp
Came for a Fly by Midnight concert! Super intimate venue with mezzanine viewing as well. Drinks were great and you can purchase inside venue or outside at the bar next door. They do a bag check and age check too. Everyone was kind and easy to chat with. Chill vibes overall! Would love to be back again for another concert.

Yelp
We took our kids and their friends to a concert. We ate next door at the Curio beforehand. Really nice small venue. All staff were friendly. We had a great time

Yelp
The Chapel is one of those intimate music venues you have check out at least once. From the high 40-foot arched ceilings to the awesome acoustics and lighting, it truly made the show so worth driving up an hour for from South Bay. Of course, the artist we went to see (Cian Ducrot on 9/27/23) was phenomenal, and this place definitely elevated his performance even more! It's kind of fun and spooky to know that The Chapel was originally a mortuary in 1914, and has rumors of being haunted! Thank goodness we were there with hundreds of other people, but it still felt a little creepy knowing that spirits were potentially hanging out amongst us listening to Cian's incredible voice too... Just Google it and you'll find a lot of articles about ghost stories and strange occurrences at night. Big shout out to the 2 guys checking bags & IDs while we waited in line out front. They were about the nicest people we've ever encountered at a music venue. The girl who scanned our tickets on my phone was also super nice! Hopefully another artist or band we want to see will play here soon, because we definitely wanna come back!

Yelp
Always a great night, even if I don't know the band! ;) Intimate venue, great staff and all kinds of talent.
google avatar

Vic P.

Yelp
I like the spot. The show was good. Real quaint inside and they got a good sound system. Their ADA accommodations though...not so great. It's a nice idea to put someone with limited mobility close to the restrooms. But if you're also placing someone with limited mobility directly in front of the stage, it's probably not going to be a good time for them. Or the people around them who will definitely trample that person trying to get a good close up of the performers & then think what that might lead to... 3 stars for now.
google avatar

Steven A.

Yelp
The best live music and comedy shows in the city experienced there... top tier talent at affordable ticket prices; awesome sound & light-shows / visuals, friendly bar staff. I only wish there were a raised row of seating on each side to help the little people or for disability sight-lines, maybe they're working on that??
google avatar

Yelp
There is a lot to like about the Chapel. It's an attractive and intimately sized room. The booking is eclectic. The staff is nice. It's well located (although parking sucks in the mission) so maybe take BAR, MUNI or UBER. All that said, I've been to two shows there in the last week and the sound for each of them pretty much sucked. In each case the mix was such, that one or two instruments dominated. It was really hard to hear the vocals. It was two different sound men, so perhaps the problem is in the system. There are two flying line arrays on each side and some lower fill monitors also on the side but not pointed towards the center. So maybe they need to figure out a center fill component. In any case, if left feeling like I got less than the full show, because I couldn't really hear the vocals and other elements of the band.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is a VIBE. The club is actually an old chapel, and the architecture is still in tact. There are places to sit down, which is really nice, and lots of bars to choose from so you are not sitting waiting for a while at any particular one. We went to the Chappell Roan night and it was fantastic. The music was great, and everyone got really into the theme. The drink prices weren't that bad as well. Overall, this is a great venue and a good time.
google avatar

Samantha H.

Yelp
The staff was rude, the space was way oversold and filled, and worst of all, the sound was ABYSMAL. They had multiple sound issues throughout the opening act, and the main act (Stars) sounded awful. I've seen them live twice before so I know it wasn't them. The vocals were muddy and too quiet, compared to the drums and bass which were at maximum volume and kept causing feedback. Fuck this place, they ruined a show I've been excited about for a year.
google avatar

Amanda R.

Yelp
I saw came for the fly by midnight concert. Overall a great venue with strong drinks, and a ground level and upstairs standing viewing area (ground level was more of a vibe).
google avatar

Mary M.

Yelp
I've been to several shows at The Chapel (most recently, last night's Fleetwood Mask performance), and it's always fun. Sound was great, wasn't too crowded, drinks are tasty and everyone is welcoming.
google avatar

Vince D.

Yelp
I love the chapel! It's small enough to feel intimate and also an upstairs where you can watch the show from above. One star deducted cause it's always hot
google avatar

Thomas M.

Yelp
Loved this place. The stars lined up and we were able to see True Widow while I was in town. Just a really great, venue and surprisingly both small and large. Attached to a bar, which was obviously super helpful. Great beer. Great, great sound. Cool Vibes.

Yelp
One of my favorite concert venues in SF! Located near a ton of great restaurants and bars in the Mission the Chapel offers a unique concert experience that you will be sure to remember!

Yelp
Unfortunately there is no option for zero or negative stars. We went to see Chuck Prophet last night and arranged for parking and a bite to eat at Curio before hand. Had to have been one of the worst live performance experiences I've ever had. I wasn't expecting Curio to be a Michelin starred place and it didn't disappoint - mediocre food, service and loud and lousy live music. But I'm sympathetic to city restaurants and servers so shrugged it off. I thought there'd be seating but only for ADA, so no seating. It sucked to have to stand for hours as the show started about an hour late. Again, this happens so I sucked it up. Then things got infinitely worse as it seems the venue was grossly overbooked. Reading other Yelp reviews it seems this is a recurring problem. Chuck was supposed to go on at 9:45 but by 9PM we were like sardines packed into a tin can, getting jostled and shoved by people going to the bar, the bathroom, the stage. We literally couldn't move. It was beyond miserable so we left at about 9:30PM and missed Chuck. Wouldn't surprise me if he didn't make the 9:45PM start for his set. I didn't think any venue could top Sweetwater in Mill Valley for pure abuse of patrons, not to mention the potential for violating fire codes, but you did. I can't think of any performer for whom I'd subject myself to that level of abuse other than possibly John Lennon arising from the dead. What a waste of my 200 bucks!

Devin S.

Yelp
Pretty nice venue, they have PAs upstairs so you can hear the music very well. The bathrooms are close by just through the side door left of the stage and are easily accessible. They have free water at the bar which you will need because it does get pretty hot during the show The stage is very close to the floor so if you are in front you can see very close up Saw the Osses in September and it was a great time, would definitely come back The staff is pretty friendly just don't place anything on the stage if you are in front
google avatar

Yelp
Just go! You will be transported to a magical music venue that will leave you reveling happy memories for years to come. We saw Sextile here and can't wait to be back in a few months for another show.
google avatar

Yelp
This Chapel is out of compliance. The lack of signage and care leads to lack of accountability. I've been coming here a long time and was born and grew up here but it's hard to support how far it's degraded. It's almost un watchable

Sol A.

Yelp
Really unique and fun atmosphere and space. Perfect for a fun night out of a beautiful more unique a wedding ceremony and reception.

Larry G.

Yelp
Went to the Chapel to see Pokey Lagarge a few days ago. Didn't make it past the opening band. I believe I was one of the few who came to listen to the music. The majority of the crowd came for other reasons as far as I could tell. Might as well have been in a rave. Virtually everyone was conversing as loud as they could as if to compete with the band. It was like being at a pick up bar. Are all music venues like this these days? Not an enjoyable experience in the least. Left after the first set.
google avatar

Brendan G.

Yelp
The Chapel is one of the best venues in the city; great sound, great location, great pre- & post-gig food & drink options. Most importantly, great PEOPLE! I dropped my credit card at a gig and MASSIVE thanks to Vanessa for helping me get it back the next day... truly a life-saver.
google avatar

Harris B.

Yelp
First off, food at the restaurant was solid and servers outstanding. That said, the timing of the show itself was way off and we were forced to listen way too long to a mediocre DJ. This, in a venue that oversold tickets and is likely breaking local fire codes. Couldn't imagine what would happen in case of an emergency. In the meantime, we were packed into a warm spreader event. Don't know why it took that long for the main act to come on. We were bored and tired at that point. You may want to consider masking up if you have to attend an event here.
google avatar

Christina A.

Yelp
Had an office party here. There's at least 3 bars. Many different spaces. We only had beer and wine, so can't speak to the cocktails or food. Staff was great.
google avatar

Julie M.

Yelp
Great venue!! I saw Spiritual Cramp and Beach Fossils last night and besides the artist's performance- the Chapel itself was awesome. I'm from NY and it was my first time at a show outside of NYC and the vibe was great but the service was friendlier and it was pretty clean compared to my ny experiences lol! Definitely an unforgettable and amazing time!!!
google avatar

Autumn J.

Yelp
Perfect venue, good people, totally out of control co-Ed moshing, cool bartenders, and just super groovy vibes. If you want to see and fully experience music or your favorite band a show there, The Chapel won't disappoint. Actually this venue will make you feel like anywhere else sucks. Oh, have to mention the sound- the sound system doesn't get any better! You will be freaking blown away with this old school venue and wonder how people aren't screaming in the streets after their shows! Loved Deer Hunter! Loved the Osees show! Unbelievable!
google avatar

Mark G.

Yelp
One of the best places around to see LIVE music in the Bay Area. The sound is always great and when Mad Alchemy is there, the Chapel transforms into a psychedelic world of swirling lights & colors.
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome venue to see bands. The staff is super nice and they serve great drinks. The restaurant next door, Curio was excellent.

Yelp
What an absolutely fun place to see a concert! While we were having drinks at the Beauty Bar, Yolie screams, "We're going to a concert!" I'm like, Mmmmkay. Y: It's at the Chapel?? Me: Oh, that's just around the corner.... Kismit? I think so. We were pretty much hanging out in the Mission, so it just seemed like the right thing to do. But I had no idea who we were seeing....King Choosey? DJ Exile? What did I get myself into??? We walked in, great lobby with coat check. Small bar inside. Chairs set up audience style, high tables and chairs, and a balcony area. We set up camp audience right. One of the opening bands started and they were great! Latin music with beats to dance to. I wondered why no one was dancing because it was the kind of music that makes you want to! But we were joined by a great group of women. The next band was reggae, again what a great band! I'm sorry I can't remember the names because there was much drink involved. And then as I was watching them it happened...this girl walked in front of my view... M: Korina? K: OMG...WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE? M: WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE? K: I'M 23 NOW Boy time flies! She is a former student of mine, newspaper editor-in-chief to be exact. What a small world! She is finishing school at SFU. The reggae band played some really great music and of course, a small mosh pit started. I went in for fun, and was gently pushed at one point, all just fun! And then the headliner came out...well, come to find out King Choosey and I are related through friendship. At the end of the concert, we just bypassed the line that was waiting to speak to him, and obnoxiously just grabbed him to say hello. We also spoke with DJ Exile, and promised to see them at a party the following week. Yes, that's why we can walk up to him like a boss. The Chapel is great! Can't wait to return at some point!

Yelp
Great venue for indie music in this old chapel. Its quite spacious and have a mezzanine second floor where you have the best view. The venue is connected to a main bar area and Curio restaurant next door.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years. I'm super disappointed that I've been going to the box office which has been closed every day I tried this week to buy tickets to a few shows. My credit card was stolen at outside lands and I just wanted to buy in person. Now they're canceling shows that we couldn't buy tickets to? I'm so frustrated right now. Wish I had just gone with my gut and bought tickets to LCD Soundsystem at the Fox for tonight, rather than staying local. Not sure I'm going to bet another Friday night plans on this venue.

Seth G.

Yelp
it's a lovely space to see you a show, but I wanted to acknowledge the kindness and attentiveness of the staff. As I was enjoying a show, I started to feel a bit light headed and started making my way out to get some fresh air. Unexpected low blood pressure - I hadn't been drinking / partying. The staff dilligently looked after me, hydrated me, and made sure I was comfortable while I regained my composure. They went above and beyond - and I am very grateful for the level of care and concern they show their patrons.

George N.

Yelp
Great venue seeing the O Sees! Sound was fantastic. The space of the venue was perfect upstairs lounge downstairs lounge. Bar service was excellent will come again.
google avatar

Patrick T.

Yelp
Really impressed with this beautiful venue! I was lucky to be in town for work and found out Dear Nora was also going to be in town during my visit! I thought, Yes let's hit this show and Im so glad I did! The venue is absolutely beautiful! Every member of the staff was super nice and getting a ticket day of was painless! I thought the sound was fantastic for both bands! I went up stairs to listen for a bit and it sounded great even in the cathedral like balcony! The drinks were a bit pricey for my Iowa Blood, but what can you do.. When in Rome! Dear Nora was fantastic.. but for sure the highlight for me was bumping into Alicia the bass player from one of my all time fave SAN FRAN bands The Aislers Set. She was super sweet and it made my night complete! Fun night, great place!
google avatar

Natalie M.

Yelp
I had not been to this venue in a long time! Caught a show (Chum, a Phish tribute band) and it was a lot of fun! Pretty spacious and they have a big area to dance and some room upstairs. There's a separate bar section if you want to get your drink on elsewhere, next door. Bathrooms are clean (important haha). The sound system is great and it's a dark space--no frills, just music. I had a great time! Some spots on the size to put drinks down or to sit down.
google avatar

Rodney P.

Yelp
Cool space but every 2 minutes the goddamn smoke Machine in the balcony kicks on and is SUPER loud. Incredibly annoying. Turn that off.
google avatar

Nicole C.

Yelp
Dope venue! I came here on a Wednesday evening to see Gavin James and he was AMAZING! The venue itself also made the experience a memorable one as well. It was an easy process entering - there was no line 20-30 minutes after doors opened (7PM). It was fairly crowded on the main floor, so my bf and I headed upstairs. Upstairs is nice and cozy. All the spots at the front of the balcony have an amazing view of the stage, so it'd be best to come in early to snag those spots! There is a bar upstairs and downstairs, so you won't waste any time standing around the bar waiting for a drink! The sound quality is great & the bass isn't too loud (another plus!). The reason I don't give this place a solid 5 stars would be the location... Coming from outside of the city, I felt that driving would be a hassle and a risk in this area... So we decided to take BART. 16th & Mission is a couple of blocks by, but if I was going to a concert here solo, I'd be worried. Overall, my experience here has been great and I'd definitely come again! What a steal to see anyone here. The vibes and atmosphere are so much fun!

Yelp
Beautiful venue. Amazing people and fantastic entertainment. DJ ROCKAWAY rocks it! 2nd annual Fusion party rocked last night.

Yelp
Dope venue with impressive architecture. Special shout out to Val, whose ID-check wristband application skills are top notch. Not a single arm hair caught in the adhesive.

Yelp
The venue is beautiful. We attended a concert and the acoustics were excellent. Parking in a nearby garage was simple and the neighborhood is lovely. The staff was friendly and accommodating. We sat downstairs on folding chairs. It may be that the arrangement changes for each event, but the folding chairs, while providing a great view of the stage and excellent sound quality, were not comfortable, especially for three hours. Drinks are pricey! Holly cow! a beer and a glass of not very good pinot set me back $22.00. The water was free.

Alys D.

Yelp
Recently went to the Rising Appalachia show here. The Chapel moved it to the outdoor "stage" which is just a junky old parking lot next to the building. It was awful: the sound system was terrible, there were no lights on the band, and there were no heat lamps. In fact, all the heat lamps were stored under a dirty tarp (along with a bunch of other old furniture) during the show.
google avatar

Melanie B.

Yelp
Spooky but quaint little concert venue that holds about 600+ occupants. Apparently an old mortuary, hence the spooky. It's pretty easy to get here, and if your show is after 6pm, free street parking to avoid paying an ungodly amount for a garage. I came here to watch DNCE as a birthday gift, courtesy of Ervin, sometime last week. The crowd was pumped and ready to dance the night away. It's open floor, standing room only and they have a balcony area with a few tables and chairs if you're not interested in standing among a sea of people (gets a little crowded up there too). Both floors have bars, open depending on event! The only complaint I have is probably the sound. For a small place, I wasn't expecting there to be such a strong echo. It never affected the performance, but whenever the band stopped to talk to the crowd, I had difficulty understanding what they were saying because of the echo/muffledness of it. Who knows, maybe it was just my ears. It was definitely an intimate concert ~ probably the smallest I've ever been to. But that's OK, the more intimate the better.

Yelp
This is a rad venue. It backs to Curio, a restaurant with a full bar, so you can eat at your leisure and then stroll into the venue without having to go very far at all. The venue itself is pretty small. Chapel-sized, some might say... nevertheless, there's a bar at the front, a loft to get better views from, and a decent speaker system that you reeeeeally should stand behind if you want the best audial experience. Maybe 15 feet back from the stage would be choice! We stood way up front though, and it's nice how close you can get to the band. I will say that I was surprised there was no security discouraging moshing. It's not really a moshing type show, but people managed and they were pretty violent about it. I kind of wish someone from the venue had stepped in, as it was obvious it ruined a lot of people's experience. Still, very cool place to check out shows! I'll be back if I can!

Raphaella L.

Yelp
bad service. the people at the window were very unkind and unprofessional. we tried to get a refund on our ticket and there were no signs on the window saying no refunds. legally, they are required to post a no refund sign if that is their policy. this was very disappointing.
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
Seen a couple of concerts here with my husband. We like going here because it's walking distance from 16th Bart station. If you get there early, there is so many restaurants you can eat at before the show. The venue is mainly standing room, It think there are like 10 bar stools along the side of the room. If a concert is packed, OMG it's so hard if you have to go the bathroom, I had the hardest time getting back to my husband and some jerks took my space. Living in the Bay Area and concert going has become a little more douchey, so take a deep breath and think, their tech jobs won't last forever and they'll eventually leave. Have fun and bring your earplugs.

Great venue! Highly recommend:) I think for bands that play mainly slower, ambient music the venue should offer some tables and seating around the floor for the patrons
