How to Explore Dingle, Ireland

"Butcher, like so many foodies who live in and visit Dingle, favors The Chart House, a quayside boathouse turned award-winning bistro that’s well known throughout the region. Rose-hued walls, exposed stone, and stained glass create a heritage atmosphere that complements the seasonally-driven fare." - Travel + Leisure Editors

We went here on a Saturday evening. Our group had different meals. From starters to dessert. The fine and helpful staff gave us all the attention we needed. Not to many dishes to choose from, which is great. I had the monkfish which was extremely good. They have most dishes made from locally suppliers. I also recommend the salad as a starter. Good range of wines as well. They also serve the award winning Dingle gin here. Superb. No parking. WC. Wheelchair access friendly.

Popular with the locals this Michelin-listed restaurant has lovely starters and mains. Try the mussels and the beef. Overall a good place to dine - atmosphere and some items on the menu are not quite en par with expectations

Good food, good service, reasonably priced. The food was well executed and somewhat on the creative side, particularly the appetizers. Service was good, although if they want to push for a Michelin star this would have to be increased. Prices were very reasonable, especially due to being one of the top rated restaurants in a touristy town.

I waited 3 months for this meal and it definitely did not disappoint. It was a relaxed and not being rushed atmosphere which was great for once. I have had blood pudding at many pubs which is not saying much but the blood pudding in philo was stunning and amazing I feal ruined now that I can never eat another blood pudding anywhere else. The lamb chops where stunning and cooked perfectly the onion jam was amazing and the ju even better. The side of vegetables that come to the table where cooked perfectly and I mean perfectly not mush and not hard. The dessert I left up to my server which was just as stunning as her service. It was the chocolate parfait it was so good perfect way to end the meal. Being a Chef at Disney this was absolutely the best meal I have ever had in my life so far. The prices are very very fair. Lamb anywhere else would be in the 50$ range in the US. Parking is easy and right down the street maybe a 1 min walk. Can't say enough good things about the staff and kitchen crew.

Google
The Chart House restaurant offers delicious dishes that I would definitely recommend. Despite having a small space, it is very cozy and offers excellent service. Additionally, the restaurant is attentive to different dietary restrictions and is willing to make necessary adjustments according to the customer's needs.

A wonderful experience: a meal that was perfect from beginning to end, excellent flavor combinations, and impeccable service. Yesterday, The Chart House made my mother's birthday dinner her most memorable. Thank you, Susan and Rob, for your kindness and hospitality.

Google
Great service and great food down by the water. We had the lamb and beef--both were great, but the star of the entire meal was hands down the gratin that comes with the lamb. The restaurant was continually filled, so I'd suggest a reservation.

Dingle is a small town in County Kerry on the Atlantic coast of Ireland. Being on the sea of course there are many fish and chip shops as well as a plethora of traditional Irish pubs serving a range of seafood dishes alongside hearty meat ones, to the sound of traditional Irish music. I ate at a restaurant I’d found in the Michelin Guide, called Chart House. It’s a restaurant with a simple yet elegant style and without fuss or pretensions. A glance at the menu reveals an imaginative combination of local ingredients which lead the diner to a high level of expectation. Overall I’d say that although it’s probably the nicest restaurant in which to eat in the town the food generally doesn’t sing in the way the menu leads one to expect. In the words of many a TV foodie, the cooking needs ‘elevating’ to do justice to the feel of the place and to the descriptions on the menu. That said this is good food at the level of a gastropub or bistro. Although it’s not the purpose of this blog to review drinks, before letting you in on what I ate I should give a shout-out to the outstanding Dingle Gin which I had with tonic while I browsed the menu. A very quaffable beverage with a dry aftertaste. It would be great with a sprig of rosemary sitting in the glass. And so to the food… I started with Annascaul Black Pudding with Seared Scallop on a Potato and Celeriac Rosti and Apple Glaze. It was nice enough except that the quantity of black pudding was seriously out of proportion to the tiny scallop sitting on top and for the life of me I couldn’t detect the flavour of the apple glaze, nor was I entirely sure what it was supposed to be glazing. A nice touch was the use of the scallop roe which I enjoy but is all to often discarded. Roast Rack of Kerry Lamb with Dauphinoise Potatoes, Cumin Spiced Red Onion Marmalade and Red Wine Jus came next. This was tender juicy and perfectly cooked lamb of the highest quality. The potatoes were creamy and with just the right amount of garlic and the onion confection was suitably interesting (but I didn’t eat it all). My heart sank though when a side dish of roasted root vegetables was also served. This was completely over the top, especially as it included boiled potatoes. Potatoes on potatoes? Really? Well it is Ireland I suppose! For pudding I chose, Warm Spiced Apple Crumble with Clove Ice Cream and Creme Anglaise. It was a suitably modest portion of well made and flavoured crumble. The creme anglaise was unctuous (but I’d simply call it custard if it were my restaurant) but the ice cream was delicious. It was my first experience of clove ice cream and I can’t wait to try and replicate it at home. A quirky touch was the presentation of the bill in a copy of an Enid Blyton novel.

Yelp
Cozy and quaint ambience with some of the most excellent service we have experienced! The food was DELICIOUS!!! Make a reservation ahead as this place books up fast! We had the pork belly and scallops which was scrumptious!

Yelp
We walked by this restaurant several times and did not hear a peep. But when we opened the door to enter for dinner, The place was bustling and packed with people at virtually every table. We were very promptly seated. Service was attentive without being obtrusive. The food was terrific. I had a seafood chowder that was packed with chunks of seafood and the cream-based broth was delicious. My wife had a salad that was made with ingredients that were seemingly cut a few minutes ago. We shared a John dory fish special served on top of Risotto that we loved. Dessert was also great. It was rather expensive but other than the cost, I think you can't miss with this place.

Yelp
This place was amazing! I was so glad we made reservations because we saw people getting turned away because they were fully booked. We were seated quickly and we're greeted by a very friendly staff. We had planned on changing into nice clothes before dinner but ran out of time. When I apologized to the host, she laughed and said, "You don't need to dress up in Kerry!" This made me feel even more welcome and I was able to relax and enjoy my meal. I ordered the best French wine I've ever tasted, an incredible seafood chowder and their local fish that was on their special menu of the day. My husband ordered a steak. Everything we had was wonderful and I am still dreaming about this meal a week later. Definitely our most favorite dinner of our trip. I hope I can go back one day! If you are in Dingle, I would say this place is a must!

Yelp
Amazing local food and great service! A+++!! We would go back anytime. Highly recommend the seafood chowder and mussels.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our meal in this Michelin recommended restaurant! Service was very formal and attentive but not necessarily warm or welcoming. Most of the time, our server stood near us, just waiting. It felt weird. The food was good and the early dinner special was a great value (before 6pm or 6:30pm) at 36 euros for a 3 course dinner. You can also order from the regular menu if you prefer the regular options. I ordered the 3 course and selected the seafood chowder, which had large chunks of seafood. The broth had the right consistency with some light cream but not too creamy. There were large chunks of salmon in the chowder and they were so fresh! I don't think I've had fresh salmon before, not like this. The texture is different, in a good way, and the taste is subtle and light. For my main course, I ordered the hake, because I heard they use the daily fresh catch and expectedly, the fish tasted very fresh. The taste is subtle and light, really delicious. The only issue I had was that there was no sauce or seasoning on the fish. There was salt and pepper on the table but I think it would have been better if there was some seasoning in the fish itself or sauce in the plate. For dessert, I got the brownie which was also good. Other orders were the steak (not from the early menu) which I was told was very tender and delicious and the toffee pudding was also notably good.

Doug M.

Yelp
I ordered the Rack of lamb but only got 3 sad little bones and a bunch of potatoes. I shared my dissatisfaction with the service but they just didn't care.... I went away hungry and 130 Euros poorer (my wife and I shared a bottle of wine, both had soup which was ok, and she had the Monk fish which was just ok too). I am a travel agent's husband and have been for 20 years so trust me when I say: I have had more than my fair share of this order as it is one of my favorites.

Yelp
Great dinner and great night in Dingle! We made a reservation here after seeing it on the Bib Gourmand list. The people were very friendly and polite. We arrived a bit early and had a drink at the bar while we waited. The food was outstanding. We had the salad and the chowder for appetizers. The chowder was wonderful - lots of seafood! The citrus oil adds a wonderful flavor and depth that I did not expect. The salad was interesting and flavorful. For mains, I had the scallops, which had a delightful sauce, delicious capers and celeriac puree and topped with greens. So good and very well cooked! I also tried the steak which was well cooked and came with an interesting cheese butter that melted over the steak - good! For dessert, I had the brulee - pretty good though nothing special. Overall, this place was great! It's small and intimate, not too fussy. The owners were so polite and kind. We had a lovely dinner and would definitely come back!

Yelp
A nice cosy restaurant. The decor is very small town Irish. I especially liked a hand made glass ceramic piece depicting Adam and Eve. The food was good. We got a complimentary soda bread basket. I am vegetarian and found plenty to choose from. I ordered the butternut squash soup, which was perfect for the rainy windy weather. For my main I ordered the spinach and feta pie. It was nice, a little under seasoned but that may be because of my preference of spicier food. Overall a good experience.

Yelp
We were looking for a good dinner and we thought that while in dingle we had to eat some fine dining. We looked into nice restaurants in the area and found 3. The Chart House, Ashes and Out of The Blue. First of all, ashes as closed. Then with Out of the Blue, some of our family members did not like seafood, which is all that Out of the Blue served. So we settled on The Chart house. Appetizers were ok. The best appetizer- and maybe the best element of the meal- was the ducks leg. We also got the salad, mussels and the soup of the day. The soup was a chili and butternut squash and it was just meh. But for entrees I had chicken and gnocchi and it was to die for. There was Parmesan sauce and it was also a showstopper. We also got pork belly and it was a bit slimy in the outside but overall good. Another amazing dish was the fillet mignon. There was also a potato soufflé and it was also good. For dessert we had the dark chocolate tart and the banana parfait. The banana parfait was definitely the winner there. The chocolate tart was overly salty but other than that, this was an amazing experience and the food was amazing. Would definitely recommend this place. Happy Thanksgiving!!!!

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. My husband and I started with a mushroom soup that had incredible flavor along with a light and fresh salad. For entrees I had the filet while my husband had the chicken. Both were expertly cooked. My steak was tender and a perfect temperature. I literally cleaned my plate. My husbands chicken was moist and buttery, not something easy to do. It was accompanied by squash risotto that was amazing. We would definitely eat here again!

Yelp
Fine dining in Dingle! Beautiful restaurant, with great service, and incredible food. We were fortunate to walk in and get a table at the Chart House without waiting. The food here all looked so good that we not only ordered 2 appetizers and 2 entrees, but we got a third entree for desert! Everything we had was so delicious! The chefs cooked the meat to perfection. Lamb, beef, duck, all tender and incredibly flavorful. The purees of potato and sweet potato that accompanied the meat were creamy and good. Each entree came with a plate of sautéed seasonal root vegetables. The arancini appetizer, a fried heavenly rice ball, goat cheese, mushroom inside, placed on top of delicious rich flavorful tomato sauce drizzled in truffle oil! So good. Really enjoyed this meal for the second they took our coats to the minute they brought our check. Probably could of done just two entrees! So much delicious food. I'd order three again!

Yelp
This place was delicious! We went for dinner while passing through Dingle and it exceeded our expectations. We happened to see it while walking by the water, so it's easy to miss. The dinner was a little more on the expensive side but absolutely worth it. Every thing from the first course to the dessert was incredible.

Yelp
The restaurant is charming and we had wonderful service. The chowder was excellent and salad was delicious and very fresh. Unfortunately the main courses were average at best. I had the salmon and the flavors were forgettable. My husband and son had the Irish chicken, which was extremely dry, so much so that they didn't finish the meal. We also ordered three desserts a fruit tart, the brownie, and ice cream. The desserts were the type you would find at any chain restaurant, not at a higher end place like Chart House. This was one of our most expensive meals while we were in Ireland and overall really missed the mark.

Yelp
Stopped in here on the recommendation of the host at our B&B. What a great find! The food was delicious, the service was excellent, and boy, did we eat way too much! The seafood chowder was amazing and would have been enough for dinner on its own. I had the seared Hake for dinner and it was wonderfully different. Check this place out!

Yelp
This place is very nice. Not cheap, that's for sure - but with your money, you get great romantic atmosphere, impeccable service and delicious food. This place isn't cheap. Most meals are going to set you back 20-40 Euro, but the food IS great. Really fresh seafood, good wines and a all-around great experience. I couldn't afford to eat here every night, but for a little splurge on vacation, this place definitely did the job.

Yelp
Best food of our entire trip to Ireland (incl. 2 nice restaurants in Dublin). Real find.

Yelp
Absolutely divine!! My family's favorite spot in Dingle no doubt. Be prepared to spend some money, but worth every penny! Had the best tasting Chardonnay from Romania, an incredible gnocchi appetizer, and tasty salmon! If you're willing to pay for a nicer dining experience, I'd definitely recommend it!

Niamh V.

Yelp
I'm afraid I must disagree with some of the reviews here. While the food is good, it didn't blow me away and I have eaten better in Dingle. 1. Clear glass plates for both courses. It just cheapened the experience. I wonder is it because we had the Early Bird menu? 2. There isn't really anything holding the decor together so it left me feeling like it's just been building up rather than well thought out. 3. Dishes could have been presented better. 4. The wine choice is fantastic All in all, the food was good but it was the decor and cutlery letting the place down!

Yelp
This little gem is just off the main drag of town, but you probably passed it on the way in but didn't even notice it. The food was excellent: Mussels for the app were good, but the lamb was excellent. I won't harp on the price, which was a little steep, but in my opinion it was well worth it. One last piece of advice is this restaurant IS small. Romantic? Yes, but that also means it can fill up so make a reservation! .

Yelp
The restaurant was decorated nicely and was cozy. Food was ok. My husband had the risotto for a starter and it needed seasoning; very bland. I had the crab salad and it was very flavorful, but I had bit into two pieces of crab shell. The main courses ere presented very beautifully and were tasty. Might try again.

Maeve J.

Yelp
This restaurant is very good. Me and my family were treated very well. The service was great. It was an excellent environment. Fresh, good food. The steak was superb, the mussels were ok and the people were very nice. The check was in a little dictionary I found that very pleasant. The appearance of the restaurant is very simple and nice looking. I really appreciated the smiles and kindness of the staff. We had a reservation for 8 and had to wait till about 8:20/8:30 but the people more than made up for it with the great food. I would definitely recommend it and would go back.

Yelp
Best meal we had in England or ireland and we had some pretty fabulous meals. Warm friendly people, excellent atmosphere and amazing food. Michelen star food in one of the most beautiful places in ireland. Not to be missed!

L P.

Yelp
Everything was excellent. We had mussels, crab claws and one of the fresh fish specials, beer, gin and tonic and red wine and everything was magnificent. Service was excellent. This was one of the best dinners we had in our week-long travels through Ireland.

Dan K.

Yelp
One of the best restaurants I've ever ate at. Quality, freshness, plate presentation, service, and menu selections were awesome. I've eaten around the world, it is worth returning.

Andy P.

Yelp
I like giving five stars but I find it hard to give them very often and stay objective and real at the same time. This was no problem! Fresh seafood in a beautiful (and romantic) setting. The service was impecible - even if I can't spell the word correctly. Eating in Ireland is not cheap. Most dinner meals have been running us around 50 euro or more (+/- $80) for two and this one ran closer to 90 ($150) but was worth every penney. Would have been cheaper except I had a shot of Midleton very rare Irish whiskey and that set us back 10 ($16). Again, well worth it. If you are in Dingle and want a very nice dining experience, this is the place. Whatever you do - stay away from Harrington's Fish and Chips across the street. That place sucked and was the only bad meal we had in Ireland - and it still cost us over $50 to eat dinner there! The Chart House - that's the place.

Yelp
Our dinner at the Chart House Restaurant was beyond expectation. Out of all of the dinners that we enjoyed in the country of Ireland, this rated at the top. We were on a tour and several in our group raved at the quality of the food and the service. The food was fresh and perfectly prepared. We had such wonderful, personal service that we felt like special guests. Thank you to Jim McCarthy, his chef, kitchen staff, and wait help for a most memorable dinner in Dingle. We highly recommend this experience and suggest making reservations as it gets quite busy for good reason.

C C.

Yelp
Don't leave Dingle without experiencing this extraordinary restaurant. Everything was superb.

Rory B.

Yelp
A wonderful, intimate atmosphere, classy interior, friendly staff and superior food make this the perfect choice for that special occaision. We've visited Dingle many times, and the Charthouse is always our choice for our last vacation dinner in Dingle.

Ashley C.

Yelp
Agree with another reviewer--this was one of the best meals we had in Ireland! the menu if very inventive. I've had quite a few great meals but rarely are they mind-blowing. The seafood chowder with the lime oil? MIND BLOWING. so. so. good. Could not get over it. Everything we had was excellent here. We ate here on our first night in Dingle & I wish we had gone back every night because none of our other meals in Dingle lived up to it :)
