On the Grid : The Cheese Lady

"If cheese is your drug of choice, welcome to heaven. Indulge in over 140 cheeses from around the globe - most are not only available for sample, but served up by the most passionate cheese-loving people you've ever met (except for you, of course.) The Cheese Lady (her name is Heather, she’s delightful), and her staff are incredibly knowledgeable, super friendly and let you taste until you find one you love. During the weekend rush, you might wait a bit - but with employees handing out samples in line, you won’t notice. And at the counter, you will never feel rushed." - CreativeMornings Grand Rapids

I ordered some cheeses to be ready for us for a trip up to Leland from Jane. I used to work in a cheese chop and I could tell the pieces had been freshly cut and were packaged perfectly. I also asked her if I could have flowers delivered to surprise my lady when she picked them up and Jane was more than accommodating and it worked out perfectly. I'm so grateful Jane went the extra mile for us, it made our trip that much better. Thank you SO much!!!

Mark Baker

Google
Very helpful staff. Nil was especially informative about the different cheeses, their ages, and location of origin. They have vegan options. They also allow you to taste test. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

Google
This was my first visit. I felt so welcomed! "Would you like to taste some cheese" as though I walked through the screen door, right into her kitchen to the table. Made my day.

Matthew Curry

Google
Wow ! Lots of choices and the knowledgeable people to help you choose. Spent the evening munching on cheese and crackers. Definitely going back. Went back for more delicious cheese, super friendly , helped me pick out a good selection to go with crackers and jam, looking forward to an evening of enjoyment. Thank you Cheese Lady!

Google
They will walk you through all the cheeses and recommend specifics based on what you like as well as let you sample all. This is the best store in Grand Rapids due to the people working there and the amazing cheese they sell

Emily Moore

Google
Grocery store cheese cannot compete. Every staff member takes the time and care to help you find the exact cheeses you’re looking for, and they are all very knowledgeable while doing so. They have a great retail store as well that has many great wines/foods/accessories. So lucky to have in the neighborhood

Erik Anderson

Google
Kind, well versed staff and the best cheese for 100’s of miles at a reasonable price. My favorite place in Grand Rapids to Shop.

Google
Stopped in to get a gift package. The lady put one together. Also bought some chocolates. Great place, nice staff and wonderful products.

Yelp
They had everything I needed and were happy to help this clueless cheese customer. Not only will I be back, but so will most of the guests who sampled my first charcuterie board!
google avatar

Yelp
They have Stilton cheese! Need I say more? Incredible amount of cheeses to choose from. The worker was making a quaint charcuterie board when I came. They offer free samples and can help with pairing ideas. Very reasonable prices for quality of the product. The cheese lady was not there when I arrived, she was in Paris tasting cheese.

Yelp
It pains me to admit this, but I've lived in Grand Rapids for almost a decade and had never gone to The Cheese Lady despite living less than a mile away for many years. Well, that all changed when I stopped in the other day to try some cheese and order a couple cheese boards for an event. I spoke with the owner, Heather, who helped guide me in the right direction in terms of amount of cheese based on number of guests and length of the party. She asked if I wanted to include some fruit and other accoutrements on my board and let me know the approximate cost. Then, I got to pick the cheese! The menu is pretty overwhelming as they have more than 90 different varieties of cheese. However, Heather was able to pick some based on my thoughts and gave some suggestions for variety and different colors on the board. You can sample all the cheese before you buy it and I loved every single offering she gave me. I kept thinking, "this would be great on a grilled cheese!" The actual ordering of the cheese boards was super simple and they were a huge hit at my event! They were arranged beautifully and included labels for all the cheese which was awesome. The Cheese Lady offers other things besides cheese, too--they stock handmade gifts and houseware items, as well as specialty food items, wine, beer, and ciders. The only complaint would be the small parking lot as I'm sure it definitely gets full at peak times. I can't wait to go back to The Cheese Lady to try more cheese and get the supplies for my ultimate grilled cheese sandwich!

Yelp
This was my first visit to the Cheese Lady. As soon as I walked in it felt welcoming! There is so much more than cheese in the shop. The store is open and easy to navigate all the unique finds. The woman waiting on me was very helpful and patient. Let's not forget the cheese- many options and so delicious! They do allow samples so you can know what you are getting makes your tastebuds happy. This is my new go to for cheese beyond your standard grocery store finds.

Brandon P.

Yelp
Well-supplied, knowledgeable. If you need a cheese-fix in West Mi and Zingerman's isn't handy, there are none better.

Charles C.

Yelp
Large selection of cheeses, employed are very knowledgeable and helpful to choose the right cheese for you

Jenni R.

Yelp
Last week my friend and I visited here for the first time for both of us. Wow- what a pleasant experience. Staff was over the top- super into making our experience great! We enjoyed every cheese we tried and bought not enough! We enjoyed every minute of this visit - wine and the extras were delicious as well! Wish I would have know about this before!!

Yelp
I have one question. When can I move in? The Cheese Lady is heaven in Grand Rapids. I currently live in Chicago, and I don't think we have anything quite like it. I'm pretty sure I hear angels singing every time I walk through The Cheese Lady's door. The shop has a giant selection of delectable cheeses ranging from high-quality cheddars to more exotic options such as fruit-infused cheeses and pungent blues. It gets better. The staff cheerfully allows guests to sample as many of these cheeses as they would like! In addition to the myriad of dairy delights, The Cheese Lady sells accoutrements such as Boska products. Boska is a Dutch company that offers cheese knives, cheese boards, etc. (Cheese. Dutch. West Michigan. Perfect.) There's also wine, beer, crackers, little jars of deliciousness, and gifts galore. (In fact, if you're looking for any last minute holiday gifts for me, I'll take one of everything The Cheese Lady offers. Thanks.) When I graduated with my Ph.D. in 2018, my wonderful mother-in-law actually took me on a cheese shopping spree at The Cheese Lady. I felt like Julia Roberts in the Rodeo Drive shopping spree scene from Pretty Woman. It was one of the best gifts I've ever received in my life. What could be better than the gift of cheese, after all? The Cheese Lady is so spectacular that I was surprised last weekend when a Grand Rapidian friend said something like, "I pass that place all the time. Is it any good?" Hahahaha. Yes, in fact, The Cheese Lady's a lot more than "good." It's cheese paradise. Again, when can I move it?

Yelp
Heather was very friendly and helpful! She made great recommendations on cheeses and the pricing was what l was expecting. She even wrote "Happy Birthday" on my bag as my family was doing a charcuterie board for my birthday! Thanks, Heather! Can't wait to check out the inside of your shop when covid-19 is over!

Carlos S.

Yelp
A friend told me about this place about 5 years ago, I still thank my friend for his recommendation. This is simply the best place in Grand Rapids to buy cheese. The owner and the staff not only are knowledgeable but friendly. I wouldn't think of buying cheese anywhere else. Their selection is awesome.
google avatar

Jessica G.

Yelp
So, for someone that doesn't even like cheese too much- I think her cheese trays are pretty fantastic! I was at a Yelp event last night and the charcuterie tray included not only multiple styles of cheese, but also nuts, dried fruits and meats with crackers. I would totally visit her shop after all of the awesome things people had to say about the tray as well as their experiences visiting. Way to go Cheese Lady!

Emily R.

Yelp
The cheese lady did such a wonderful job creating a beautiful charcuterie board for my dad's 60th birthday! She was able to accommodate a very last minute order after my parents had to unexpectedly fly to GR over his birthday weekend! The beautiful cheese board and delicious bottle of wine was delivered to his hotel room same day and made his entire birthday!! Thank you!!

Yelp
We love love love this place from the friendly staff to the amazing cheeses and meats!!! Our favorites?? Well, one of everything! Seriously though you have to try the Triple Cream St Angel Brie, the Aged Prima Dona and, if it's in season, the meadowkaas (so?)!! With a nice wine, a little jar of Black Cherry preserves, and crispy crackers!! Mmmmmmm... my favorite dinner!

J B.

Yelp
This was our first visit and it certainly will not be our last. We had no idea what we wanted so we asked for advice. They put together a wonderful tray with a variety of labeled cheeses, crackers and nuts. We highly recommend the Fromager d'Affinois (creamy brie style) served with Almondina crackers.
google avatar

D F.

Yelp
The Cheese Lady's "house" soft brie is just amazing. (I hesitated to post this review lest there be no brie left in stock when I next shop there. This place is a local treasure... and worth every penny.

Yelp
I have found Heaven on Earth, and it is "The Cheese Lady." Seriously. If you enjoy cheese, pasta, breads, premium crackers, beer, wine, or food in general, you will love this hidden gem. Tucked away off of Fuller between Michigan and Fulton, this little sanctuary for foodies provides as much cheese to taste as your little heart desires. From hundreds of delicious choices, the friendly and knowledgeable staff are determined to find you something you will love. I have never left disappointed.
google avatar

Katie A.

Yelp
I love this store! It was everything I was expecting and more. The folks working here were happy to let us sample cheeses and patiently answered all of our questions. Such amazing cheeses here too! Definitely worth the visit.

P G.

Yelp
The store has a great variety of cheese, the staff is knowledgeable and free with sampling. All products purchased were of high quality. I do fault them, though, for being totally unwilling to order specialty cheeses not in stock--I would truly expect this of a specialty store. I requested two different Italian cheeses, Tuma and Scamorza, both of which are common in (at least southern) Italian cooking. They had no interest at all in obtaining them and were only slightly helpful in determining substitutes with their stock -- the staff didn't seem to really know what these are.
google avatar

Sandra S.

Yelp
Thus is one of my fun spots in GR! Hundreds of a taste of anything you want and the nicest staff who are all highly skilled! And a great place to get gifts too!!!
google avatar

S K.

Yelp
We tried all the cheeses that I was curious about to our heart's content and the gals were very knowledgeable, friendly, warm and welcoming. There is no pressure to buy, but you will leave with cheese that you like. I will be back when back in town.
google avatar

Mike K.

Yelp
My family loves cheese, so I am not sure how today was our first time ever to The Cheese Lady. They have 150-200 kinds of cheese! Very helpful staff who gave us many samples and we ended up buying 3 kinds of cheese: Ewephoria, aged, dry sheep cheese; Beemster Goat Gouda; Capra Goat Cheese with honey-a chevre from Belgium that is soft and sweet. Amazing! We also bought mini-bar ice cream. They were very, very good and we would definitely buy them again. I had the mint one and my family had the toffee ones and we all thought they were the best ice cream bars ever.
google avatar

Samantha D.

Yelp
This place has a huge selection of cheese! They also carry a nice assortment of other snack-y foods, such as dips and spreads, crackers, dried meats, and artisan sodas. Best of all, the wonderfully friendly women who run the place really know their stuff and can make perfectly catered suggestions to fit any palate. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves cheese!
google avatar

Kimberly S.

Yelp
My new favorite place in Grand Rapids! I stopped in and the awesome staff put together the most amazing cheese tray. The lady who waited on me was very helpful and let me try several cheeses. She also suggested a fig jam and toasted baguettes to go along with the cheese tray. It definitely was a hit at our family dinner. I will be back to try some more of the wide selection of cheeses.

Dawn I.

Yelp
What a great place for cheese lovers! Tried some amazing cheeses and bought several kinds. I love how you can try any you're interested in and buy any amount you want. They also have many specialty items and wine. Definitely a place one should check out if they like cheese. Make sure you put NE with their address into your gps if you're from out of town or you'll end up at someone's house.
google avatar

Eric I.

Yelp
Generally I love this place. They're very knowledgable about cheese, they've got a small selection of gifts and other high end food items. My only complaint is their olive packaging. They pack bulk olives in cheap plastic containers that leak every time. After the first couple of times I started bringing a second plastic bag to catch the liquid. Maybe it seems like a small annoyance, but it ruins my Cheese Lady experience, and it would be so easy to fix. Please Cheese Lady upgrade your packaging!

Yelp
Searching for things to do with the in-laws while in town, I discovered The Cheese Lady. Great shop with an awesome and accommodating team to my Los Angeles family natives. The board listing all of the cheeses was amazing and you can try anything you'd like. The young lady behind the tasting counter was very knowledgeable and patient with everyone. We never felt rushed and were so knowledgeable about cheese after our visit! Great shop with fun things, wine and snacks are also available for purchase. Great experience and will definitely be back next visit to GR to purchase more cheese!
google avatar

Gretchen D.

Yelp
We went for a Yelp event. Very friendly place. You can taste any cheese before you buy. The carry one of our favorites--Pleasant Ridge. Loys of crackers, gourmet items, gift items, etc. for sale too. Recommend!
google avatar

Chris K.

Yelp
Had a great time here with some fellow Yelpers! I can't believe this place has been here for so long and this was my first time here. I love cheese! How did I miss this?! The staff is super friendly and well informed. My wife and I thought that we liked sharp cheese, but found out, through sampling, that we are looking for more robust flavors and not simply sharpness. This is quite the little gem and their assortment of cheeses and wines are perfect for pairing for a party. And don't forget to pick up the other essentials while you're there too. It's all here; crackers, wine, homemade ice cream bars, dips, and some AMAZING merrichino cherries! Pricing is great. We have bought some "fancy" cheese from a local market in times past, but the prices here are better and the quality of the product is far superior.
google avatar

Joyce L.

Yelp
An unassuming little cheese shop that always feels like you've come upon the greatest secret in the city. The cheese ladies that help you never make you feel even the tiniest bit guilty or embarrassed about exploring their cheeses before you buy. They are also very knowledgeable and passionate about every cheese they sell (and have sold out of!) and make excellent recommendations. They have everything else you'd need for a delectable night in for you or a gathering including wine, bread, jams, meats, cheese planes/knives/slicers. Catch them when they are open, they generally close a little earlier than dinner time.
google avatar

Shalynn H.

Yelp
Imagine you had a pleasant dream of being deserted on a Cheese island with every cheese imaginable. You have arrived at the Cheese Lady. This place is legit and they know their cheeses. You can sample virtually any cheese they have. They are cut to order, so now you will not be stuck with a block of something you will not love. You can get as little or as much as you want. We won't judge. ;) Also have lots of goodies and gifts, and plenty of tools for entertaining! Cheese lovers, you have found your heaven.
google avatar

Josh L.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this place on our vacation. We went in to discover they had been open for exactly one year. They had cake and all the ladies were wearing prom dresses. How funny. Anyway, the woman helping us was very patient as we tried many different kinds of cheese. We appreciated that when we said we wanted a gift basket, she asked how much we wanted to spend and she rigorously stayed within that amount. I liked that I wasn't made to feel like a moron for not knowing everything about cheese and that I didn't feel cheap for only buying a little bit of cheese. I have been to several different cheese shops, all of which are good, but this one provided the best service. That service is necessary when confronted with 130 kinds of cheese.
google avatar

Evan S.

Yelp
If cheese were drugs this lady would be my dealer. I used to want to be cremated when I die but now I want to be buried so I can be covered in cheese, I don't know why. Was that too weird? Prolly, but I'm sticking with it. I've only been once but the lady a the counter was very knowledgable and helpful. I ended up with three great cheeses, one was a nutty, earthy Sheep's milk which was so good it made me want to cry. While they do offer an excellent variety from all over, I'd like to see them offer more local options. They are a local business and it would be cool to see them support local cheese artisans. That's a symbiotic relationship y'all! I learnt that in science class!!
google avatar

Megan S.

Yelp
The first time I visited this store, I learned of a new career; cheese broker. Seriously!? Where was that job on career day? If you are a cheese-o-phile, you like cheese, or you've heard of cheese and were curious to try more, this is the store for you. I was greeted with smiles and a featured cheese sample as soon as I walked in the door. The staff was astoundingly knowledgeable on ALL of the cheeses and were willing to cut samples of any cheese I wanted to try ( I only tried like 10 I swear). The only drawback is that this store is dangerously close to my house. Sorry wallet and thighs. Move over vegetables, I'm commandeering your drawer for my cheeses.

Paul A.

Yelp
Huge selection of cheese. Samples galore. They also carry wines, baskets, cheese boards, slicers etc. The customer service here is spectacular. They make you feel like one of the family. They also have a cheese box for gifts. You can pick the cheeses or they recommend. We picked up two (they make them from scratch) and put a colorful ribbon type bow on top. Both people that we gave the gifts to loved them. These folks knock it out of the park. Easy to find and easy to park.

Yasmine J.

Yelp
This is the most amazing place in GR. If you want to gain 10 lbs this week from consuming massive quantities of amazing cheese, this is your place. Amazing variety, clean place, and tons of products to help you have the most amazing cheese board ever. Friendly staff as well, a gem in Grand Rapids.
google avatar

Roxie C.

Yelp
Went here for a girl's weekend and it was so fun! We were in here for about an hour just trying all different sorts of cheese! They have a large variety of different cheeses to choose from, and wine also available in store -they will help you choose wines that will pair nicely with the cheeses also. Very good service and a fun/cute place to stop by with a group or on your own free time. Fresh and delicious!
google avatar

M R.

Yelp
If you love good CHEESE, this is the place for you... Or good wine... Or beer by the bottle that happens to pair really well with good cheese... Or other high end edible things that you didn't know existed, but look good once you happen to see them... Any of those - this is the place for you.
google avatar

Curtis W.

Yelp
It started as a fun way to try new cheeses and turned into an addiction and love for some unique flavors you can't find anywhere else. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Adam S.

Yelp
This is my favorite Cheese shop in GR by FAR. They serve so many different kinds of cheese and they serve it fresh. The ambiance there is great because the people there actually want you to try there cheese. If you want a sample, they give it to you willingly. If your looking for an authentic Cheese Shop in GR, come to the Cheese Lady.

Yelp
"Awwwww, it's so cute in here" I say in my voice reserved for puppies, kittens, and babies. And every single time I walk in I say the same thing. The store has wood floors with a smattering of perfectly posed tables, reminiscent of an old time deli or European grocery store. Decorated with baskets, vintage and repurposed items, there is unsuspecting and delicious finds are in every nook and cranny. Now, decor and ambiance is always a plus for me, but I came here for the cheese. And maybe a bottle or two of wine. The Cheese Lady's selection of cheese is vast, with over 100 offerings and even more if you ask for something special. The staff is friendly, approachable, and fun to work with, taking the apprehension out of learning about cheese. I stood in front of their cheese table and told the gal working that I like soft things, sweet things, and creamy things. Yep, I was that vague about it. And sure enough, she came back with three different cheese that I absolutely loved. What I ultimately took home with me, fit the description of what I liked. I also tried (and purchased) a blue cheese flavor. The tasting and sampling session really pushed me out of my comfort zone to try a few new tastes that I wouldn't have tried on my own. In addition to their a big city selection of cheese tastings, they have wine, fresh butter, crackers, gluten free treats, jams and jelly's and kitchen prep items. And make sure you check out the hand made ice cream bars in the cooler- they are perfect on a hot day!

K H.

Yelp
I love this place! They have every type of cheese imaginable. The staff is super helpful and will let you try any of the cheeses. If you love cheese, this is the place for you. Don't miss this gem
google avatar

Katie M.

Yelp
I am a lover of cheese. I finally went after the hitting up the farmers market in Muskegon. There is no place like this for miles. Most of the cheeses are from Europe. Go go go go go! They have other specialty items too that pair well with cheese such a wine, jams, pasta, sauces and more. Very cute place for gifts too.
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
Yesterday was my first time being at The Cheese Lady. The young woman behind the counter was phenomenal. I needed some cheeses for my husband's birthday and I'm a pretty picky cheese-eater. She let me taste several cheeses until I found the right ones. Even helped me pick out a delicious pear jam to serve with the cheeses. Thanks for all your help! My husband is excited for our cheese platter tonight!
google avatar

Susan R.

Yelp
Dear Cheese Lady - You are so exquisite and made our visit(s) so personal and tailored. Your staff is knowledgeable and the selections are impeccable. There is plenty to see and try at your ice cream style counter with an ever changing selection. I believe we heard the building used to be a barber shop and the floors are original. We have made plates for guests that have gone over amazingly. If only I could remember the actual name of the "life-changing-triple-brie"! A gem in Grand Rapids and a must visit for locals and visitors!
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
I have not found better advice or more personable, friendly, warm and informed employees than Tonya, Liz, Carol and the other folks whose names I forget that make each visit an experience to look forward to.

Molly R.

Yelp
This place is awesome! If you like cheese...love cheese or are just curious, this is the place for you! A family member had received a gift basket from here and after trying it I knew I have to go in there myself. The shop was definitely busy as I waited, our Cheese Broker (that's what the employees are called) also handed me samples of what the people before me were trying. When it was my turn, everything I tried was excellent. Not only was the staff was very fun and friendly, they were extremely knowledgeable and helpful. You've got to try this place at least once...then you'll be hooked!
google avatar

Christine E.

Yelp
We've a little hidden gem here in Grand Rapids and this place is tops! I am wowed by the variety and quality of the cheeses. This, coupled with very knowledgeable staff who know how to make excellent recommendations? Why, it just doesn't get better than this. They know their stuff and are friendly and personable. This is my go to stop, right after the Farmers Market. I love you, Cheese Lady!
google avatar

Katy A.

Yelp
This place is seriously my personal heaven. The staff was super knowledgeable and were more than happy to let me sample as much cheese as I wanted. The categorized cheese list board in the back is also very helpful. Along with cheese they have a great selection of meats and accouterments . I left with 1/2 pound of cheese, the most delicious salami I've ever eaten and a really nice orange fig jam for about $20. I would definitely recommend this place.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
As Megan points out this shop is near the Farmer's Market so I can anticipate the brussel sprouts on the losing side! Loads of cheeses all available for sampling. A large chalkboard serves as menu/scoreboard. (kinda like Founders) The staff is super knowledgable and ready to offer a helpful suggestion. Additional offerings are a small selection of gourmet foods, a small selection of wines and some craft beers.
