"Whether it's Orkney scallops or Wiltshire pheasant, there’s always an appealingly muscular quality to the cooking at this popular pub set in a smart residential street amid elegant Georgian terraces. You can choose between elaborate dishes with international flavours and touches of originality or those of a more traditional bent. The homemade bread is always a must." - Michelin Inspector

Came here with the hubby for a Sunday roast in Bath! It was definitely one of the best roasts we've had in the UK. We started with the scallops with garlic butter and herbs topped with a toasted bread crumb. For mains, we both ordered the pork belly roast and for dessert the sticky toffee pudding. My favourite of the three was the scallops. Mind you, I am a huge fan of seafood, so I'm always a bit biased towards my seafood. The scallops were perfectly cooked, with a nice butter and herb flavour. The toasted bread crumbs added a nice texture contrast. The pork roast was super tender - you can pull it apart with your fork. The skin had a nice crisp to the skin but was a bit on the sticky side as opposed to a dry crisp. The pork had a mild Asian five spice flavour. We also had a side of cheesey leeks, which wasn't as heavy as we thought it would be. It was our first time having cheesey leeks and we definitely enjoyed it. The sticky toffee pudding was topped with a ginger flavoured ice cream, which was slightly different. The sticky toffee pudding was served warm so the contrast in temperature between the pudding and the ice cream was nice. I think I would prefer a clotted cream or vanilla flavoured ice cream instead of the ginger. The staff here were super friendly and attentive. We definitely enjoyed our roast here and would recommend checking this place out!

Extremely welcoming pub with delicious food and great service. All staff were very attentive and brought food out quickly. Don't skip starters, bone marrow and pardon peppers were excellent (muhammara was a personal highlight!). Roast beef was delicious with very generous portions and you definitely can't miss the cheesy leeks!!

Without doubt the best meal I have ever had. The food and flavours were outstanding. The chef who I believe is named Sam, I was told is self taught. If this is true, it is quite astonishing as the level of detail and skill shown on each dish was that of a seasoned professional. I will without doubt spread the word about this lovely establishment.

Wow! We were a party of 14 and the service was amazing! Aston was awesome, so friendly and professional. The Sunday roast was incredible. It was the perfect end to a beautiful weekend in Bath. Thank you Aston! We will definitely be back ⭐️

Visited with my boyfriend earlier this week, had the most wonderful meal! Sophie and Aston really looked after us and were super attentive. The food was first rate, we went for the rib of beef special which couldn’t have been anything less than perfection. Was definitely the highlight of our stay and wouldn’t hesitate to return!

A delicious Sunday roast! We started with the peppers on labneh which were unique and very tasty. This was followed by the beef roast, with all the sides you expect. The Yorkshire pudding was great, but just slightly overdone. We finished with a sticky toffee pudding which was to die for. This was a great pub experience!

We came for Sunday lunch, we can't remember having a better one in the city, and for the quality and quantity of the ingredients and the flavours, it was great value. I had the roast beef and it was just exceptional. Service on point, really nice gastropub feel. We will be back.

This spot is my favourite restaurant in Bath. Moved here a year ago and have always turned to Chequers as my go to whether it is with family or friends or a date, this place never disappoints. The changing menu is always in line with my own personal tastes, delivering great food every time. I hope that when people visit Bath or live in Bath that they pay a visit to this to this place as it’s truly a gem. Have come here plenty of times but here are some pics of the food and wine (special menu items this time)

Yelp
Very disappointed. Roasted sirloin was very fatty. Waitstaff was friendly, but service was very slow. Don't bother.

Yelp
This place is in walking distance to Victoria Park. Staff has been super friendly and the food was delicious. I ordered triple battered cod with chips, both very tasty, including the sauce. It was served with a fabulous tasting peas purée. I didn't see a small green salad on the menu but they accommodated which I appreciated. The new item on the dessert list was Panna Cotta with a fabulous gelato. Grateful I got to experience this casual hidden gem.

Yelp
So delicious! What a lovely discovery across the street from our Airbnb. Great steak, nice ambience, friendly staff, and awesome service. A stop you should make. A meal you should have.

Yelp
@Eating.Drinking: "I don't want this to end." * Sounds like a stereotypical line from 2018's latest box office chick flick. In fact, it's a line I subconsciously muttered as I made my way to the end of this sublime meal. * We were lucky anyway to be staying at the @royalcrescent_hotel (a separate post on this later) and maybe even luckier to find a last minute booking for @chequersbath, the ultimate foodie pub, having stumbled across the last available Saturday evening slot on @opentable. * Restaurant: On the outside, it's a pub set on a quiet street in a pretty Georgian building. It has your usual pub benches with punters seated, sipping beer and wine on this sun-soaked street in Bath. On the inside, it's also a pub, very simply wood-furnished with pews and blackboards. * Staff: You are instantly greeted by the friendly, knowledgeable staff the moment you set foot inside this gastronomical goldmine. Everyone knows the menu, ingredients and it's service with a smile from start to finish. * Food: Where to begin. There is a great menu, clearly laid out. The name of the dish is simply its focal point so it's easy to find your way around. We opted for seafood but there is also pork, lamb, rabbit and steak on offer. There is also a strong selection of vegetarian alternatives. * Summary: I've already used the phrase 'gastronomical goldmine' and that sums it up. Quite honestly I can't think of a better superlative but will say it was a 'seafood sensation!' * Salmon - teriyaki/caviar/mooli/yoghurt Hand-dived scallop - black pudding/celeriac/apple/hazelnut Cod - herb-crusted/black beans/chorizo/squid/bouride Halibut - Heritage tomato/courgette/Jersey Royals/black garlic * We paid around £80 for dinner and a couple of drinks. For a meal like this it's nothing, you'd do well to find this level in London's restaurants. It's worth every penny. * I live in London but I'll be back on my next available Friday night for the 7 course tasting menu! * www.thechequersbath.com * 50 Rivers Street, Bath, BA1 2QA * *

Yelp
Pretty stiff place hidden away near the Royal Crescent. Looks like a pub from the outside but feels more like a rather dull cafe on the inside. We only had a few after dinner drinks here on our way home, so I won't comment on the food, which might or might not be good. Very limited beer selection and fairly miserable staff did not make for a pleasant experience, company excepted. Why go here when Bath has so many fantastic pubs bars and restaurants nearby!

Yelp
We'd actually tried to book our usual Christmas Day lunch at the Hare and Hounds, but they were fully booked (by August) so we settled for their sister pub. Very impressive. Very welcoming. We'd pre-booked the entire meal, and the chef followed our instructions to the letter, removing items to which we were allergic (or simply didn't like). They handed each of us a glass of champagne on arrival, followed by an amuse-bouche of celeriac soup. We all started with the seared mackerel, which was a very small portion to leave room for the rest of the meal, then the others had beef sirloin with all the trimmings while I chose cod and puy lentils. Between us we'd ordered all the desserts but struggled to find room for cheese and biscuits, mince pies and truffles. Everything was absolutely delicious. Only downside was the wine - a rather expensive and very acidic Sauvignon. Really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. Next time we'll specify a table on the ground floor as we hadn't realised there was an upper floor and one of our party struggled with the stairs.

Yelp
Evicted by the manager of Chequers after 85 minutes on Sunday 11th December we spent £143.25 on lunch, manger demanded the table back at 1.50 p.m. for other diners. We had 12.30 booking website states tables are for two hours. In our early 60s, we took a weekend break in Bath. Booked Sunday lunch at Chequers as reviews excellent. Arrived at 12.20 shown upstairs table, small, crowded tables, it looked into the kitchen, we've owned several restaurants, so nice seeing chefs at work. Ordered cocktails, starters, main courses, and bottle of wine. Downhill, from there, a party of 7 with a large Golden Retriever stood around our table, arguing with staff who insisted booking was 5, dog wet, smelt badly and lay down under our table. Staff moved two young diners and rearranged tables to seat the 7. Quietly I told the waiter we would be happy to move and were moved downstairs. Wrong roasts arrived and swapped elsewhere, when our roasts arrived, beef was tough with grizzle, I did not complain as it was part of birthday treat. After desserts, waiter asked if we wanted coffee, said yes, but please give us 5 minutes to finish wine. Waiter said he would see how many minutes we had left, as you only have 1.5 to 2 hours, came straight back saying table needed in 10 minutes but would send the manger over. Manager told us to leave in 5 minutes and they had already moved us. I said the table was upto two hours and we moved owing to dog under our table. He stated, he cannot sanitize dogs and people also smell. I said not to expect a good review and would like to order coffee. Manager stated we don't care about reviews, don't read them, then told us we were being evicted. He repeated this 3 times, I asked why, he said as a publican it is his right, gave no reason, would not give his name. We had not raised our voices or been impolite during lunch, we paid immediately left at 1.55.p, m., one of the most unpalatable incidents ever experienced in over 35 years of dining out.

Yelp
The Sunday roast here is fabulous! We stopped in at the beginning of our holiday and I have to say this meal was head and shoulders above anything we had in London and better than I've had in our foodie hometown. Really the Holy Grail of restaurants as it delighted my vegetarian daughter, my carnivore husband and the rest of us fussbudgets. Excellent beer and wine selection as well!

Yelp
This review is coming about a year late. But I think that's just a testament to the fact that almost a year later, I can't stop thinking about the amazing Sunday roast I consumed with glee. So yeah, if you're around on a Sunday and it's a very wet winter day, or even if it's a warm summer day, go to The Chequers and have the roast. Go for the pork belly. Hands down, the best pork belly I've ever eaten. The roasted potatoes and veg were perfection. The gravy? I asked for more because it was just that good. Book ahead of time (because they do fill up), and enjoy the best roast ever.

Yelp
We arrived with a large group of almost 50 people. The restaurant provided excellent service and every dish was beautifully prepared, executed and HOT. That just for starters. Service was prompt and courteous with the wait staff taking drink orders upon arrival. (We had booked and ordered ahead.) I chose a salmon tartare for a starter and it was delicious and beautiful. My entree was the prok belly which was served with braised swiss chard and yorkshire pudding. Dessert was a lemon parfait. All three were superb. Add to that an excellent wine list and continuing attentive service. I would happily recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a fine dining experience in Bath.

Yelp
Sunday brunch with lots of roast option. Booking advised. I particularly enjoyed the roast beef. My boyfriend's venison pie was amazing as well. Definitely will be back! (It was easter weekend and all the tables were completely booked!)

Davina D.

Yelp
Had a Sunday roast dinner here: staff extremely friendly and helpful. Beautiful looking pub with delicious food. I can imagine they get very busy so reservations probably recommended. Will definitely return!

Yelp
Had one of the Sunday roast options. Really enjoyed the food, atmosphere and service.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. Rooftop very hip place. Pork loin was excellent and a good portion.

Yelp
After a dramatic refurbishment in 2005 The Chequers was turned from a dark & dingy pub into a light & smart bar with parquet flooring, stripped wood furniture and off-white painted walls - another well accomplished composition of a traditional interior with a modern twist. And it doesn't end here...the food is fantastic and affordable - atumn time - you should try their mussles! The menue changes every now and then as does the wine list. Normally preferring a good red here I often go for a Chardonnay - always a very good choice! If you are looking for a chilled & relaxed place to hang out with your friends this is it.

Yelp
Very good gastropub serving food until late. There is a good choice of game and pub classicsq Very good atmosphere and good service

Yelp
This has undergone a drastic refurbishment and is now a fantastic gastro pub at the top of Bath. Very welcoming and cosy, this pub has plenty of old oak tables and benches and corners to snuggle in. Great range of ales and ciders as well as wines, worth booking in advance if you're eating as they get really busy in the evenings. The food here is absolutely wonderful good pub classics served with a gastro twist and very tasty. Really relaxed atmosphere, it's pricey but it's worth the money as it's such a lovely little place. Sunday lunches are especially great and as such especially popular!!!

Yelp
Great little pub with a nice wine list. Can be a bit loud due when crowded, but not in an annoying way. Overall dinner quality and ingredients were above average for what I'm used to in pubs, though my wife's haddock risotto was under-seasoned.

Yelp
After our disapointing outing to The Marlborough we promised to try this sisiter place. We went and enjoyed a 2 course offer lunch for £10. We both had a good starter and excellent Partridge for the main. A decent glass of house wine sent us out very satisfied. We are sending a Daughter and S in L to a dinner there as a Chjistmas gift. Well done good spot

Yelp
This place is superb in every way. They have got the decor and ambience spot on and have created a pretty unique hybrid cosy and totally informal pub / wine bar feel. And the imaginative food is fantastic too! In my top three places to eat and drink in Bath. Just one minor suggestion: some of the staff (certainly not all of them) could be a bit more smiley and customer focused.
