Where to Chill Out in Phoenix With Dreamy, Creamy Frozen Treats

"The City Creamery is the perfect addition to Cave Creek’s Western landscape with its traditional and simple, small-batch ice cream that comes in more than a dozen flavors. As the Southwest’s only location of the mini-chain, it’s become such a destination that there’s even see a map where guests can mark where they’re visiting from." - Jamie Killin

Great location! The ice cream is homemade and they had lots of fun flavors! I thought it was great that they had an ice flight!

The ice cream is amazing! I recommend a quick stop on your from The Jewel of the Creek preserve. It was a great reward for the 2 mile walk.

Great flavor options, a little pricy in my personal opinion, but really good and location is fun. I love how we were able to sample flavors before deciding. As new residents we will bring family here for fun desserts

If ever in CaveCreek this a must have. Great tasting home made ic cream. Flavor options are super duper excellent and have a choice of all the cones and bowls. Not super sweet and scoop sizes are decent. Love it - it would be dangerous if I lived down the street.

What a wonderful little gem this place is. We're here for a visit and love ice cream, Dairy Queen is fine but The City Creamery is much much better. The ice cream was delicious wonderful choice of flavors. The boys working were so nice and friendly. If you are near hear so worth a stop.

The atmosphere is awesome. They have delicious ice cream options. The best part is the social media sticky note board and check in board they have inside. Definitely worth a visit!

Delicious ice cream Our cousin Tom told us that this was the best ice cream in the galaxy so we had to try it. The ice cream was delicious, there were lots of interesting flavours and the staff were so generous about giving us samples to try. We did think that the cone cracked too easily though. This is small batch artisan production at its best - and obviously made with love!

Stopped in after a beautiful drive and hike in Carefree for some ice cream. Such a cute little shop with fantastic views and close to a lot of fun Western tourist places. The ice cream is homemade and so delicious. We had the wedded bliss and the coconut with chocolate almonds flavors in a waffle bowl and loved every last bite.

Yelp
Wow!! I read about this place in the Cave Creek visitors guide. I was staying not far away so I decided to go check it out. I got the hot fudge Sunday loaded either dark chocolate and strawberry ice cream. It was so delicious. The fudge did not seem hot tho. I guess the ice cream is so cold it must have froze it. lol. Idk. But boy howdy it was good and huge. I believe how big and delicious it was. I could not eat the entire sundae. They make their ice cream hand made. They even have quarts you can buy to take home with you. Next time I am going to buy a couple quarts for the house. Anyway, the nice young lady who helped me was very informative on what came Roth the sundae and she did an excellent job making it. I will be back next time I come here.

Yelp
Second time coming here two consecutive days. First time was great, hence we returned the next day. Day one we received generous scoops. One scoop nicely filled the waffle cone even inside. Today it was like we all got kids scoops and felt slightly gyped. Someone should get some quality control going here. Good fresh ice cream otherwise.

Yelp
We all need a treat once in awhile, right? The City Creamery makes their own ice cream the old fashioned way. There is a standard menu with a new flavor featured every Friday. Chocolate is my go to flavor. So why not chocolate with chocolate sprinkles? To top it off, a waffle cone and we are good. Well, that hit the spot! Parking in back of Cave Creek Road.

Yelp
Cute little place inside. The pistachio ice cream was odd didn't look out taste like it and the coffee one did taste like a Latte. I would not go back. But I'm glad i can check trying a new place today off my to do list ha ha. I also think it's more appetizing if you see the ice cream.

Yelp
Awesome little creamery in Cave Creek. Great place to stop in for some ice cream on a hot summer day, or just anytime. Friendly staff, quick service and tasty ice cream with fun patio seating. If you're in the area and in the mood for a treat, this is your place to get it!

Yelp
This place is SO busy in the summer... SO, So busy! We were showing my mother in law real estate in the area and decided to stop in for an ice cream splurge. I was so happy there wasn't a crazy long line out the door as usual! We walked in and I first noticed how each of the four people working greeted us! So friendly.. That is a plus nowadays! It's always a win in my book! I also noticed the accolades even before I noticed the choices since I was supposed to be choosing choices to share with my husband for a sundae! The City Creamery has been voted one of THE Best Ice Cream Places in National Geographic Magazine! Back to the ice cream! Everything is small batch and homemade! I love vanilla and maybe that speaks to my personality.. a safe bet. Comments kept to you, please! I can't have nuts .. also comments kept to you. I do not remember what we got but it was amazing and filling and even though we shared it with a lot of rich chocolate fudge sauce; hot caramel and whipped cream I loved it and it filled us both up! My mom in law got a sugared cone and didn't come up for conversation for a bit! Yay! Lot of amazing flavors and great service in a great place! Get in here!

Yelp
Alot of talk about city creamery being one of the best ice cream places based on National Geographic and my thoughts is it's good for the type of selection of flavors but I wouldn't say it's the best ice cream I've ever had. You always got to love a place where they have small batch ice cream so you know it should be higher quality. I felt like it kind of was more icy less than creamy which I would of preferred. We got the huckleberry honey and lavender and the green tea and honey ginger flavor. Both have good flavor but the texture I was hoping for that creamy smooth texture which didn't seem to be there. Still good but nothing I would say it's mind blowing. All In all, its a good ice cream shop while being in cave Creek to enjoy and a fun place to enjoy a treat while enjoying the area.

Yelp
Great ice cream with fun flavors. I had the Mexican Hot Chocolate. Very good. The ambiance was also great. Loved that it was really churned the old fashioned way.

Yelp
I love the he smell of waffle cones being made, and that's the first thing you'll notice when walking into the city creamery. But you won't receive a greeting from the three employees standing around. My experience was very awkward here. One girl making waffle cones just had a military thousand yard stare going on, the guy was there, but he wasn't, and the other girl was ready to go home. I ordered my sundae and was excited since the ice cream is made in house, you can see the ice cream being made next to the cashier which is pretty cool. But the vanilla was, well, kind of vanilla. It was nothing special. The girl did give me a lot of fudge which is nice. It took my hot fudge Sunday to the next level. I really just didn't appreciate the service and not so welcoming environment.

Yelp
We went to grab some ice cream here after having a drink nearby, and this is a great hidden gem! We went in right before closing, but the staff didn't mind. Seemed like they were some teenages just at their night job - they were fun to talk to! We all were chatting about the music choice in the shop (Taylor Swift) and they were super patient with us choosing our flavor. I loved this shop because there were so many unique flavors! I had such a hard time deciding, and the staff let us do a taste test. I tried the feta and honey and it was surprisingly great! I was in the mood for something chocolatey, so I went with rocky road. My boyfriend got strawberry cheesecake and cookies & cream in a waffle cone. We were in and out quickly! The ice cream was delicious! It was a little too frozen for me, but nothing that a couple minutes in a warm car didn't fix. The chocolate was very dark and rich, and I loved the little marshmallow pieces. My favorite part was that I could tell there was some almond flavoring in there! My boyfriend's flavors were also rich and creamy - we wish the cookies and cream had bigger chunks of cookies, but it was still great! My favorite part was the waffle cone - it was sweet and crunchy, and tasted exactly like how the shop smelled. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
It's not only got some creek character, but its hands down best ice cream in AZ. Can almost guarantee that you will not be disappointed. Traditional and non traditional flavors. Would be really neat if they could put together an ice cream flight/sampler.

Corinne M.

Yelp
Best ice cream. We have been there a few times because it's so good. I personally love the salted caramel. However, after this most recent visit I had to post a review. My son ordered an ice cream cone. It was hot and melting fast. Shortly after ordering, he needed to use the restroom and with toddlers it can take awhile. When we came back out, it was mostly melted. I told him we would buy another. We walked inside and started ordering again. The person working asked if something happened or if he didn't like his flavor. I told her what happened and she gave it for free. This is no fault of city creamery and I had every intention of paying. It's hot and it melted but they were so kind to do this. I will absolutely go back.

Yelp
Friendly staff and great ice cream! I got a 3 scoop sundae with hot fudge and was in heaven. Their flavors change often so check their menu but definitely give them a try!

Graysoni B.

Yelp
Skibidi ice cream. Very Loki bussin and rizzy. Hits different when it's not fanum taxed by a random animal. Servers were absolute w Giga chads and were sigma. Skibidi, Skibidi on the wall, they were the skibidiest of them all. Helped with my mewing streak

Yelp
In the middle of July it was way too hot to sit outside or peruse the adjoining shops we had a delicious blast ordering ice cream! It was worth visiting off-season and receiving outstanding customer service!

Elann G.

Yelp
We love our little creamery so close to our home in Scottsdale. It's a great place to bring family and friends. Ice cream and flavors are awesome. One complaint is the price. We went the other night and we got two kids scoops in a cup, 2 regular scoops in a cup and two regular scoops in a waffle cone. I about dropped my jaw when she told us it was $38! I'm not sure the value represents the price. I would give it a five star but just can't because of price.

Yelp
It had been a while since we last visited, so we decided to give it another shot. While we always root for our local businesses to succeed, we're not too excited about City Creamery. Many of the flavors have a pronounced taste of just one of the ingredients. For example, our chocolate mint had very little chocolate flavor and was mostly very minty. The staff is nice and very helpful and there are a few places to sit facing Cave Creek Rd where you can sit and people watch.
google avatar

Yelp
Had the itch for ice cream but this didn't scratch the itch. Had a sundae and was very average with stale waffle dish, forgettable but in a nice mall setting
google avatar

Yelp
Cute place. The employees always have an attitude when I come in (bunch of younger kids). Ice cream is good but it's nothing to write home about.

Yelp
This review is long overdue. We absolutely love The City Creamery! We moved to Cave Creek just prior to the pandemic & The creamery quickly became our "big outing" several times a week! Our family recently held a wedding & we were determined to use local businesses as much as possible. For dessert we set up a cupcake ( Epiphany Edibles) & Ice cream bar featuring The Creamery Ice cream! It was delicious and a huge hit with our guests! If you haven't been there- make sure you give them a try...they are definitely a FIVE STAR treat!
google avatar

Yelp
So after dinner we walked next door to get dessert. I ordered a mint chocolate chip in a waffle cone. Their Ice cream is amazing. Mint chocolate chip doesn't need to be green that's just a processed food coloring. This is homemade ice cream and it is so creamy, delicious. I always stop in when I am in the area.
google avatar

Michele M.

Yelp
The service is always friendly and welcoming. The ice cream is made in house and is incredibly creamy and the flavors are delicious. My favorite is the chocolate with orange and I was delighted to discover their peppermint that they make for the holidays. I had to buy a container to take home. Absolutely wonderful flavors! Our favorite ice cream in the Scottsdale area.

Yelp
I think this ice cream shop is absolutely adorable, the location is fantastic with a good amount of seating and a great view. Downtown Cave Creek is perfect for a weekend afternoon visit! Since the weather has been warming up, I figured naturally ice cream was the way to go. The shop has a great selection of ice creams that are house made with mostly natural ingredients the old fashioned way. I opted for the milkshake myself and really had my heart on strawberry, which I added caramel sauce, whipped cream and graham crumbs on it. The graham crumbs didn't really do much, I'm not even sure the caramel sauce was worth a $1 more. Truthfully speaking the strawberry flavor was non-existent and would not be able to guess what it was blind folded. The milkshake was a little thin by my standards, and perhaps the strawberry was even more washed out due to the ratio of ice cream to/milk. The result of the creation unfortunately didn't really hit the spot. A similar Starbucks offering is $6 as opposed to the $9 mark up here. Yes, I know Starbucks isn't homemade but it does actually "taste" like strawberries at least. I really would rather support a homemade "mom and pop" place. The second item we ordered was a waffle bowl with two scoops of vanilla ice cream. The downside about the waffle bowl is you get a paper to hold it, I was hoping for something a little more sturdy. After ordering my two items, I was given the waffle bowl immediately, which I tried to balance while getting out my credit card to pay as there was no good spot to put it down. After giving my credit card I was asked if I was part of their loyalty program, and I said no and asked if I could sign up. The woman was in such a rush to ring me up she had already swiped my card. I never did find out what the loyalty program was. Also, they keep the spoons in a really awkward place, I was stuck waiting for the cashier to ring in the next family to grab a spoon. It was another several minutes before the milkshake was ready, it was a little awkward getting the one item well before the other. I really just didn't want to stand and watch it melt as the waffle bowl wasn't for me. For two items we spent just under $17. I definitely feel prices are marked up because they are located a cute little town and a great spot. I'd check out the place if you happen to be here or are entertaining visitors, but I'd definitely not go out of my way as a destination ice cream shop. Maybe a different flavor might have provided a different milkshake experience, but usually strawberry is a hit with me.

Yelp
Always great tasting ice cream. Fast service. Good variety. And of course a local business. Highly Recommend!

Yelp
This shop was an excellent choice for homemade ice cream. When you walk in, you get the overwhelming sweet aroma of licorice. There are a multitude of non-traditional ice cream flavors. I chose two different flavors in a waffle cone. Both flavors and the cone were fantastic. Not too much ice cream where you feel bad after, but enough to definitely feel satisfied. Service was friendly and fast. The store itself is small and could be cramped when busy. There's a nice seating area outside in the common area of the shopping center. There's ample shared business parking behind the business.

Yelp
I saw they had prickly pear flavor and I had to try some ice cream. Even with covid they will give samples to try which is nice. The ice cream is made locally and churn style it seems. The ice cream has an interesting consistency to it. I'd describe the consistency like taffy almost. I enjoyed the flavor of the prickly pear ice cream and the consistency as it made me take my time eating my cup vs scarfing it down. The service was friendly and the interior of the shop has cool items for people to mark their locations from around the nation.

Yelp
Best darn ice cream I have had in Arizona. Had the pistacio and the chocolate chocolate orange in a waffle cone. Wow! What marvelous flavors and textures. Wish it was closer to home (I live in Tempe) because this puts Sweet Republic to shame!

Laura K.

Yelp
The best premium ice cream shop in Arizona! Try the salted caramel. Exceptional customer service.

Yelp
Outstanding!!! No less than outstanding! We are locals, and really enjoy going to the Ciiy Creamery. Their ice cream is homemade, and is deliciousl.... Today we enjoyed several of their flavors. (Once you try one, it's hard not to have more!) So, if you want great ice cream made the old fashioned way, give them a try, you'll be happy you did. Mike and Jan Tramonto/Phoenix

Yelp
We came here after dinner next door. They gave us a few samples. We walked out with 3 quarts (Pumpkin Pie, Raspberry Cheesecake, Prickly Pear) and a single scoop Huckleberry Honey & Lavender in a waffle cone. They have so many good flavors! I can't wait to come back and try more!

Yelp
Great place to hang on a nice summer evening. Nice variety of flavors to choose from. Ice cream is churned on site. I loved the chocolate orange flavor. The wedding cake I was told was the most popular flavor. I found it a little bland The coconut almond was excellent

Yelp
I wanted a little something sweet so I stopped in here. I honestly wasn't really looking forward to it but that changed immediately when I walked inside. Right when you walk in you see two ice cream makers churning away making fresh ice cream! I was immediately excited about trying the ice cream. The guy working was helpful and knowledgeable. I tried a couple- prickly pear, which I'd never had (tastes like cantaloupe), I love that it's a local flavor! I also tried wedded bliss, which I ended up ordering (small waffle cone with one scoop) and it was amazing. The ice cream was thick and creamy, which was perfect since I ate it outside (it didn't melt crazy fast). I was worried that it had chocolate covered almonds (thinking they'd be rock hard and break my teeth) but it was an awesome addition! I would recommend this place to everyone with the slightest interest in ice cream :) they even have quarts to go ($10) if you live or are staying nearby. Indoor and outdoor seating is available.

Yelp
On Sunday May 7th 2023 Cindy & I loved our ice cream choices served up with impeccable service by three charming young ladies. Cindy dearly enjoyed her Double Chocolate Orange while I lovingly licked my way thru a combo of 2 scoops of Dark Chocolate and one scoop of Rock Road. The ambiance of a well organized family business, a hint of my small old home town and the amazing very large "hand crank" ice cream buckets reminded me so much of helping my Granny make ice cream on her hand crank ice cream bucket in the early and mid 1950s. Chelsea: thank you so very much for your delicious ice cream and The City Creamery hospitality.

Yelp
Great spot to get an ice cream treat especially after a nice hike nearby. There are plenty of seats inside and out. I was surprised there were lot of customers in the middle of afternoon on a sunny Thursday. Or maybe not so surprisingly. They offer variety of flavors and let you sample some before choosing. They rotate the flavors so there's a good chance of trying a new flavor in every visit. I tried the cowboy coffee which was really tasty. Price was slightly higher than other places though. Paid over $7 for two small scoops in a styrofoam cup (see photo).
google avatar

Yelp
Loved this local creamery. Sooo many flavors to choose from. My flavor of the day, raspberry with dark chocolate, was delicious, as was the huckleberry honey and lavender flavor I also got. A must try!

Yelp
Delightful shop with homemade ice cream ! The youngsters working there were super friendly, helpful and welcoming. I thought the prices were a little high for a single scoop of ice cream, however the ice cream was very fresh and tasty! I tried the coconut and chocolate with almonds for my first time there today !

Yelp
Great ice cream and super friendly service. It will become our go-to for ice cream. I love the yellow brick road (rocky road with caramel) and Wedded Bliss. They have house made hot fudge that is delish. My husband loves the cookies and cream.
google avatar

Becky H.

Yelp
Some of the best ice cream the entire state of Arizona has to offer. Cowboy Coffee is usually my go-to flavor but I've yet to try anything that isn't delicious. The staff is always so friendly and they welcome tasting if you're not sure what to get. There is plenty of outdoor seating and social distancing isn't an issue if that's something that's important to you. If you're in Cave Creek, do not pass this place up!

Yelp
I was feeling pretty disappointed with the lack of homemade delicious ice cream's in the Phoenix area and then I came across this place. So dang good I love it. Will definitely be back for more
google avatar

Eleonor M.

Yelp
Great ice cream. Creamy and large scoops. I had a combo of 1 scoop Huckleberry Honey and Lavender with a scoop of Green Tea w/Honey and something else. The green tea was sweeter than I like but good. The huckleberry and lavender was excellent. My partner in crime had a scoop of huckleberry and a scoop of lemon bar. She said the lemon bar had just the right amount of lemon flavor.
google avatar

Andrécito C.

Yelp
Who knew a dusty old cowpoke town could round up enough miking cows and then have the foresite to milk them instead of turning them into steaks.... But that's exactly what they are doing. This world continues to amaze me. They somehow manage to churn that milk into a little taste of heaven mixed with all sorts of traditional and not so traditional flavors. If you happen to be sporting your leather chaps and riding that hog or horse through town stop on by and get that handlebar mustache a little creamy, you won't regret it.
google avatar

Yelp
What a delightful place! Nice selection Homemade A wall for social media! Indoor/outdoor
google avatar

Yelp
I had the best coffee ice cream here!! I'll be back! Small store with friendly staff! Park in the rear. Cute outdoor area with tables and chairs.
google avatar

Yelp
Ok, I don't even know where to begin ok, yes I do the Cookie butter ice cream is absolutely hands down in the top 3 ice creams I've ever tasted in my life! Pair it was a sugar waffle cone and it's perfection! The double stuff cookies in cream was another delicious choice my kids chose and I snuck a few bites in. I will absolutely drive the 30+ min to just to go grab some ice cream with the family or friends, that's how great the ice cream was here. I will be back soon City Creamery.
google avatar

Laci B.

Yelp
What a great ice cream shop. Had the Cowboy Coffee and Wedded Bliss- excellent choices. Waffle cones are the best I've had.
google avatar

Yelp
I took the kids here for ice cream tonight. It was a huge hit! The flavor selection was great and the service was top notch. Thank you for making our night!
google avatar

Judy L.

Yelp
I have been following them on insta for awhile now. When I got to stay at the Boulders, I had to come here even though I just had Dairy Queen the night before. All the ice cream is made fresh in the store. We watched bucket automatically churn. Ice cream was good and many flavors. And place a star on the map of where are you from!

Julie B.

Yelp
THE best ice cream around. Very creamy homemade, wonderful flavor combinations! Definitely addictive. Take some home with you too. Always my choice when I need to bring dessert to a potluck...can't go wrong.
