A Guide to Nashville’s Best Dive Bars | Eater Nashville

"Open until 3 a.m. daily, East Nashville’s the Cobra is just as much a live music venue as it is a bar (maybe even more so). While the “venue” portion of the space only opens 30 minutes before show time, there are pool tables and dart boards to help pass the time in between sets and rounds of brew over at the bar. The Cobra keeps it simple with a menu of nachos, quesadillas, hot dogs, and burritos." - Jackie Gutierrez-Jones

Great live music venue! Intimate setting by the bar, where they have some fun drink specials. Loved all of the bands we saw on a Sunday night. Hardworking musicians with original music.

First time visit, thought the place was great. Saw ANVIL, they blew the roof off. Reasonable beer prices, didn't try the food. Back patio smoker friendly really nice. Be a great summer hang with a good cigar. Cool, underground vibe.

Great spot for live music and cheap drinks! Staff were awesome and drinks were good!

Steve Libby, lead singer. my view only. I've been here a few times. My band has played there. Last night there was a show with the band Anvil. I bought tickets and took my son. He is 15. when I get there, they tell me its 18 and up. fair enough. my mistake. but the disrespect i got from the door person, was unacceptable. He laughed at me for not knowing it was 18 and up. no, "hey sorry about that I wish I could let him in, but they installed an 18+ for this show." nope. what I got was a chuckle. Maybe it was a nervous chuckle because of my size. Whatever. He was a douche. I left but then realized I paid $44 for parking (the 2 tickets for the show were 17.50 each] so, I went back in to get my ticket validated. I said, "well if I can't see the show, then I am going to get my money back for parking." he said "Did you pay?" I confirmed I did. He laughed and said, "if you paid first then I can't." I asked him to explain, and he laughed again like I am an idiot. "you paid first so i can't" and laughed again. I said something disparaging as i left because I knew i had to walk away. what a crappy way to treat someone. The Cobra has to know this guy is a bad representative of their business, right? but from what I've heard and seen myself, they don't care. they don't care at all.

I've only been to a couple venues in Nashville but this is definitely one of the best! I totally enjoyed the industrial feel of the place, and the layout was pretty cool too, except I spent 10 minutes waiting at the wrong stage for the wrong show LMAO. We came out on 12/9/2022 to see Not Your Nails, and it was an absolutely amazing show! I will definitely be coming back to future events at this venue. Industrial Santa rocks! 🤟

Google
Great bar to hang and listen to music. They have a pool table and couple of dart boards, too. There's a separate venue room that had a cover charge but the bar area had free live music so we hung there (we didn't know the names playing in the paid venue otherwise we would have gone). Definitely be back.

Google
Nashville is full of venues. This is a real one. Great sound system, good size room for gigs, cool sound person, bar staff were friendly and even the door guy was tough but friendly. If you're looking for Broadway, this isn't it. This is The Cobra! *Pictures of a sound check

Google
The music venue is quaint, but that doesn't detract from the vibe, rather, it seems to enhance it and make the experience more personal. The bartender was amazing and very friendly. She also kept a close eye on everyone's belongings and drinks to keep them safe. I appreciated that a lot. I went to see Al1ce and after the experience, I'd definitely go back to see other bands. The drink prices were pretty steep, but what isn't nowadays...

Yelp
I actually would really like this place if not for the toxic amount of mold in their venue room. Anyone with asthma or a mold allergy STAY AWAY. Couldn't breathe at all after an hour. Feels like Something that would be illegal in a more enlightened state

Yelp
This venue, and Elliot Virula (who booked this with us) should be cancelled and musicians should ban this venue! We had a confirmed date with them to put on an event and they cancelled on us out of the blue. The musicians and bands already had travel plans and flights booked as well, This is unacceptable and a bad way to conduct business. Once a date is confirmed it's 100%. I also spoke to the owner Nikolaos Gehrke who said he would try to fix the situation, but then never got back to me. Not only did the Cobra screw us over, but also the 10 other bands and musicians on this event. DO NOT SUPPORT THIS VENUE, BAN THE COBRA!! Also, people, let's not forget the double murder that happened at this bar! See link.... https://www.tennessean.com/story/news/crime/2023/06/27/nashville-cobra-bar-murders-horace-williamson-found-guilty/70358025007/

Yelp
I don't know what I did or when I did it. Not much info was given. Do u have video of me trying to start a fight? I've never done that in my life? Ron Goodman. What the hell did I do and when. I'll take whatever u give me. I just don't remember. I just don't remember! Fuck you!

Yelp
Love this place. Always have, always will. I've been going since it was foobar Kept going when I lived far. I sometimes go watch live music Or casually watch a movie with John Cusack. Ive been hustled at pool But the bartenders are cool OMG open mic night can be entertaining Some visitors show up complaining Although life can be draining And outside is raining Cobra keeps me maintaining NOW SMOKE FREE!!!

Yelp
My favorite bar in all East Nashville! The drinks are the best priced in the east end of the city! They always have a great music playing whether it be live or just on the speakers. Everyone wonderful I've met in Nashville I met at the bar. It's kinda got a dive feel but in all the fun/best ways. To me it's the true experience of east Nashville! The bartenders are always super fast and helpful! Also if any type of alternative scene if your scene, it's one of the only places you can visit in Nashville and meet/make Connections to any alt scene. It's a rare gem here in Tennessee

Yelp
Small dive bar/club. The atmosphere is nearly claustrophobic. Armband guy has a poor attitude. So, 1st experience through the door sucks. Bar tenders are nice. If you are truly desperate for a place to go and no other place to go, this will work in a bind. Just try to ignore Mr. Pissed off personality at the door. Parking sucks too. Good luck.

Yelp
If you're into live music, a divey vibe and cigarette smoke, Cobra is your spot. Finally ventured in for a show after driving by for the thousandth time and I was pleasantly surprised. Looks are deceiving, the place is actually quite big and has a back patio as well. The band lineup was fantastic and I genuinely loved the old school rock bar feel. Haven't been to a show with that kind of energy in a while. Alternative lifestyles welcome, no judgment. Drink and food selection was average and parking was kind of a mess, but you go for the atmosphere, not for a paved parking lot and pristine conditions. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
nice place to hear local bands and grab a drink however the bouncer is a total dick. just rude to everyone who came in. thought it might just be me till I heard many people talk about how rude he was to everyone who came in. i asked a question about parking and he told me I needed to read signs. I would not go back just because of him. would have left that night but had already bought tickets.

Yelp
This place is awesome. Fun friendly wait staff. Free darts and great music. Also just found out they have awesome food after 9:30 pm. Green Chili. Come see this gem.

Yelp
This place has everything. Beer, music, pinball, a photo booth, live music, a cat and of course.... waiting to use the bathroom for 5 minutes only to see two gentlemen exit shortly after one another from said restroom. Weird right! Oh well, at least the honky tonk was playing, the booze was a flowing and the arcade was warm. Be sure to pop in for some tasty jams and a crack at the Rob Zombie House of a thousand corpses pinball machine!! Rad!

Yelp
Go to No Quarter, Mickey's, Duke's, Dino's... literally anywhere else. I was there this past Sunday to see a friend do stand-up. One of the bartenders was so rude to us that I thought that she was kidding. It was absurd. The friend that I was there to see later pointed out that she got his drink wrong (which we both agree is no big deal, it totally happens), but he didn't even want to say anything about it because he didn't want her to blow up on him. Almost every customer at that bar was under 35 and probably worked in the service industry too... I don't know anybody in that room who would treat their customers like that. She might've been tired, whatever- I hope she doesn't talk to everyone like she talked to us. It was awful. Just awful. I will not go back. Ridiculous.

Yelp
Geographical Location: Up & coming (kinda feels a little sketchy) Are the floors sticky: No (thank goodness), however you do feel like you think they are going to be. Is it loud: HECK YES. bring your ear plugs to soften the loudness Parking is a little sketchy too, and you will likely have a little jaunt. Variety: It's a good thing! There's a cute quieter smaller more intimate room but still with big noise (on the right as you walk in), the "lobby" where the front door is has a couple games and a couple booths and separates the different rooms. The room on the left (when walking in) has the bar and more music. I didn't venture to that room, so I don't have much to comment about that. Would I recommend? In general I probably wouldn't just come out to hear music but if my friends are playing their music there, then definitely!

Yelp
I'm not a smoker but I'll still give it 5 stars for the great frickin food. Nice hang

Yelp
I tried to call to report this in person but no one will answer the phone and there is no room in the mailbox. About a year ago my brother almost died. He had a brain aneurysm burst. He's had a few surgeries to repair them but sadly he still struggles with his speech and has difficulty with stuttering. He is trying to make the best of his "new normal" as he used to be quite articulate in his speech. Very disappointed to say that when he visited your establishment and attempted to ask the owner to change the TV to the basketball game the owner was VERY RUDE , mocking him and embarrassed him about his speech. You should be ashamed of yourself. Needless to say my brother won't be returning and after hearing this, neither will I.

Yelp
Coming from Boston, I've seen my share of "dive bars." Some authentic gems, others just a bunch of hipster college students and washed up dudes trying to impress them. The Cobra is the real deal. It's gritty, it's gross, and it's full of smoke, but that really is part of the charm. Especially with a group of friends, the pinball machines, dart boards, and pool tables make it a place you really can hang out and chill for a while. Most importantly, as an LGBT person, I really look for diversity in order to feel comfortable in a bar space. The crowd felt authentically alternative, and I observed a relatively good amount of POC and queer people, when we know this is often an issue when one enters a bar. That does not go unnoticed for me, as someone who has not always felt welcome among certain bars. Although I recognize that everyone's individual experience may be different, I definitely wanted to write the review in hopes of helping others finding the bar.

Yelp
I had some serious health concerns as soon as I saw this place. Don't visit this place if you value your health. To make it even worse, the bartenders are stealing credit card information from customers

Yelp
Cobra Sonnet Once I lived in a city that a Cobra existed. I only went once, there were so many fine establishments to choose from in that city. Now I drive up and down Gallatin Pike wondering how I ended up here, I mean I literally insisted. Maybe I should have taken more advantage when I had the chance, what a pity. This Cobra isn't so bad, it's just different. They have replaced the gay Mexicans with live, loud music and straights. It's hard to feel indifferent. I'm debating, is this a place I would come back to with my mates? I mean what is a bar? A place to get a drink. Perhaps the crowd and music are less my style. Did this place serve me a beer at a reasonable price, um yes I do think. Would I make an effort to come back here, um no, and the distance from my house...about a mile. If you are reading this, the true question is, should you go here? If you like dive bars and you think you can top this review, make it happen before we all disappear.

Yelp
The Cobra reminds me of many bars in Buffalo, NY which is where I'm from. It's a cool bar with an alternative/emo vibe. It's awesome. Also, drinks are decently priced and bartenders are so nice! Live music is available in the room next door and host some local acts! Will definitely come back.

Travis B.

Yelp
Bar is advertised as closing at 3am and the staff very rudely started kicking everyone out at 2:35. I want to emphasize very rudely. They sold us beer at 2:25 and then kicked us out less than 10 minutes later.

Yelp
I used to love this place, fun games, cool crowd, DJ, but the last two times I've been the whole place smelled like a dirty toilet. Last night we went for a couple drinks and to play darts and I could barely stand the stench. We played a quick game and left. I asked the bartender if he knew it smelled like a toilet in here, he just shrugged and said "well it's Cobra". I'm all for dive bars but it doesn't have to smell that bad. Open a door, light a candle, clean up. I'd rather the floors be sticky than inhale piss air.

Yelp
After living in east Nashville for a year I finally made it to this place. I liked it a lot more than I thought I would! I was expecting a super grunge, dirty, small dark bar. But I was wrong! This place is big! You walk in to the bar area which is spacious in itself, then there is the next room over which has access to the back yard area for smoking/hanging out when it's warm, there is also a few old school games in here such as Pac-Man and a few pinball machines as well, plus a pool table. The third room over (which has a door separating it) is the space for the bands to play. All rooms are spacious and not cramped! There is a great vibe which I've yet to find anywhere else in Nashville. The bartenders were sweet and not too busy on a weekend night. Great spot to hear some live music and hang out with friends!

Yelp
their hours are wrong & their phones dont work. dont go here. they obviously dont care about your time

Yelp
Great bar, great atmosphere, but the late night burrito brought to you by Gringo Steve puts bar on next level!!
