Where to Find Matcha in D.C.

"The Protein Bar’s Avo-Matcha smoothie packs a matcha punch. It comes with avocado, matcha, raw organic honey, almond milk, and vanilla protein. It's sustaining enough to drink as a meal, but also works as an energy booster." - Hanna Nakano

Their iced vanilla latte is honestly one of my favorites in DC. It’s so simple but they manage to make it delicious every time! I love that they use a shaker to combine everything before pouring it into a glass. It helps ensure everything is combined and I love it. The space inside is very small so it’s definitely more of a to go spot, but it’s close to so many office buildings and open working spaces that I don’t mind at all.

Google
After finishing some errands nearby, we discovered this place and decided to take a break with a coffee. We really enjoyed the atmosphere of the place—it was clean and minimalist yet inviting. The large floor-to-ceiling window at the front allowed us to watch people passing by. The latte was delicious, and the pastries complemented it well. We were fortunate enough to find a seat and plan to return soon for another round of coffee and pastries.

Google
This is absolutely the far best coffee in town! For coffee lovers like me who especially appreciate the real cups (coffee tastes so much better than in carton cups!), this is the place to be! Even a choice from different coffee blends, what a treat. I’ll come as soon as I can!

Mohammad Shahin

Google
Came here for single-origin espresso. As a coffee enthusiast, the experience was mediocre at best. I didn’t really get to judge the coffee itself as I think the extraction was way off, unfortunately. The environment is fine. No actual chairs, just stools, which is fair for a “bar”. Clean bathroom.

Google
I stayed in a hotel nearby and was very happy to find the coffee bar. Very flavorful flat whites with great latte art. Friendly service and pleasant atmosphere for drinking from the real cups.

Google
The Coffee bar offers excellent food and drink options. I went with a classic latte and was impressed with the latte art - the barista wrote our names! The pastries were also great. This location has a very community feel to it, like Cheers, where everyone seems to know your name. I would highly recommend it as a grab and go spot, seating is very limited!

Google
Wonderful little coffee shop located in the Pillsbury Building in the heart of downtown DC. I fell in love with The Coffee Bar's other location Shaw for their incredible coffee, friendly staff, and great vibes, and their downtown version is no different. Their coffee is rich, slightly nutty, and super smooth, and it's great in all forms -- latte, americano, drip, etc. If you don't love coffee, their matcha latte is also phenomenal and probably one of my favorites in DC. The ambiance is a little bit more corporate and a smidge more snug than the Shaw location, but it's still delightful. There are a few seats available at the window-side bar or at a long table in the center of the café, but this spot is also the perfect destination for a little mid-workday stroll with a cup of joe to go.

Google
TLDR: Yes yes yes I popped in here for a couple hours to work on a paper, and it was an amazing place to work. There's not a lot of seating inside but I got lucky and snagged a spot at the center table facing the bar. I love that view. Watching happy people come in and order drinks from other happy people who are happy to make them. Also, the music they were playing truly slapped. Early 2000's era jams really jazzed me up. The Barista's were friendly and even offered me a free pain au chocolate at closing time when they were packing up (Shhhh don't tell the managers). The cortado was good. Nothing to write home about itself, but nothing to complain about. I'd go back.

Yelp
My GoTo is a Vanilla Latte and I have enjoyed each cup I have gotten. Smooth well balanced latte with a satisfying amount of Vanilla and an enjoyable sweetness. Not cloyingly sweet like some coffee chains that are abundant in this area. The space is a bit cramped, with not a lot of room to sit or even stand and wait for your order. But if you're looking for a good coffee to grab on your way into work I'd definitely recommend this place.

Yelp
Coffee snob here came for some coffee, wanted to try drip it's always my go to when trying a new place because if they can't do drip right it might be downhill from there. Coffee was great service was fast just wish there was more seating

Yelp
Found this little gem near my office and was so happy I had time to stop by. I ordered Chai tea for the first time and it won't be my last. Im not much of a coffee/tea drinker, but thankfully the cashier was very patient with me and explained the menu options. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Everything you want your coffee shop to be. Pleasant & hasty service, lively and artful ambiance with cool colors and thoughtful elements worked into the nook and crannies. That turquoise neon sign with the scribbly handwriting?! Something in me just loves that and it feels perfect for the coffee bar. My cortado was delicious and my husband enjoyed a pumpkin on his latte!
google avatar

Yelp
I have passed the coffee bar several times but couldn't see the name of it. It often had a good amount of people inside so I have been wanting to try it out. Today I finally did and I'm quite pleased. The coffee shop is cute and offers a bit more of a local vibe which I like. I ordered a soy latte and the coffee flavor was great. The latte was steamed perfectly. And the kicker was the cute design on top with my name! I came back and showed all my coworkers haha. I def plan to come back here!

Yelp
This is great little independent spot to have amidst the sea of Starbucks downtown. I'm a fan of their iced coffee and oat milk lattes, and they aren't as steeply priced as some other places around here. They've got pastries and some packaged options (which are vegan, but would love more food options for people with dietary restrictions!) They also have a gender-neutral accessible bathroom which is great. The place is small though, with not much seating, unlike their other location on the opposite side of 14th. So it can get crowded easily so there's sometimes a line.

Yelp
After many trips to DC and bouncing around the city to find great coffee this is definitely one of my top choices! Very conveniently located right by DuPont Circle and somewhat off of the beaten path. The first time I visited The Coffee Bar I loved my latte so much I had to order a second one to go! If you're visiting DC and looking for a place to grab your morning cup of coffee this is the place! Also tried a ham/cheese croissant that was delicious as well.

Yelp
Fantastic experience! Clean, warm, people were inviting, and the coffee was amazing. I loved the simple and clean decor and the fact that they had a separate coffee team of six people making coffee in the middle of the café. Patisserie was separate, which made it also really nice for those who didn't want coffee could just take their itemsand leave. I would highly recommend to anybody who likes to sit and have a cuppa coffee and people watch. I wish I had some photos to share.

Yelp
I was too quick to judge, and I was wrong. I owe TCB that admission. This is now one of my favorite coffee places in DC. They get classic coffee drinks right. After what had struck me as an inconsistent early period after opening, this place has been SO GOOD. I recently tried the best flat white I've had in the city, and their cortado and cappucino are excellent as well. If you love lattes, the cardamom latte is quite tasty. In general, the drinks are better if you sit down and drink them there versus taking them to go (this should probably be the case universally, but at lower caliber establishments I found it doesn't matter as much). Their baristas are also very friendly and the place just has a really great, laid-back vibe. I'm trying to go here regularly during the week, and you should too.

Yelp
While not the best coffee shop I've ever been to, I genuinely appreciated how friendly the staff were -- particularly the individual taking orders at the register. She made sure to spell each customer's name correctly and just brought a smile to my face! I ordered a matcha latte -- usually I go for almond milk, but they only had soy / oat milk substitutes. The matcha latte wasn't particularly flavorful and tasted more watery than anything. I wanted to give it another shot the next morning, but they were out of matcha then... I also got a honey pistachio kougin aman pastry, which was a bit dry and pretty sweet. Not my favorite but still an interesting / fun pastry! Food: 1. Honey Pistachio Kougin Aman (3.5/5) Drink: 1. Matcha Latte with Soy (3/5)

Yelp
I love the coffee bar. Everyone was great. The food and coffee was wonderful and the ambience was positive and uplifting. I found the establishment to be very clean and servers knew how to serve the coffee and food. In some establishments, they'll touch the top of your cup or your plates or your utensils which is, really not restaurant best practice. I always appreciate company that trains their people well and the people that work there care about customers.

Yelp
This place is super crowded on a Sunday but the coffee makes up for it! I ordered cardamom latte and it was delicious. Definitely get it half sweet or 25% because it can be overwhelming
google avatar

Yelp
One of my favorite coffee shops for sitting outside and having a relaxing morning. Easily accessible by bike, walking, or metro and still feels very neighborhood-y. Good coffee and friendly staff.

Yelp
Great coffee in a convenient location - super close to Farragut North and close to Dupont Circle as well. I got an iced vanilla latte which was delicious but would live to go back and try their cardamom latte also as it seems like one of their specialty flavors. The location is small with not much seating so definitely more of a grab-and-go type place.
google avatar

David Y.

Yelp
Great new coffee place in Dupont. Really small and intimate place that makes a mean oat milk latte.

Yelp
Great vibe, great staff, good coffee, and good pastries! Tucked nondescriptly at the 17th and M intersection, an extremely underrated downtown DC coffee shop. The Coffee Bar has an alternative, funky vibe and the staff always give friendly greetings and provide great recommendations when asked. I have had their coffee and several of their pastries over many visits and enjoyed everything I've had. I look forward to returning soon!
google avatar

Yelp
May be the best latte I've had in DC so far just wish both locations offered pick up

Ana N.

Yelp
Busy but the best coffee in the area - good price and size. Delicious baked goods too! There's a good amount of seating on the inside and patio.

Yelp
Located at the intersection of M and 17th Streets NW, The Coffee Bar (TCB) was quite true to its big city like surroundings. There is little space with pretty limited seating, but considering their hours I'm assuming they cater predominantly to customers who are there for to go orders rather than countless hours on their laptops. Their decor, while minimal, is perfectly accentuated by the neon sign that reads "The Coffee Bar" (I wanted to take it home with me) and the presence of teal color. I won't lie I was there for the neon sign so seeing it made me happy enough, but the super friendly employees were definitely an added plus. I only had a latte but it was good. Overall, a good experience. Since I live in VA, I wouldn't go out of my way to go back, but I'd go there again when in the area.
google avatar

Kena M.

Yelp
Clean and bright, with soaring ceilings and beautiful decor. The drinks are tasty and the selection of fresh baked treats is just right. (This is the original TCB, not the pop up that made a brief showing after Covid.)

April R.

Yelp
Staff was nice enough and the price was reasonable. It had good amount of seating when we went at noon. The coffee was very good! We had vanilla beans and not syrup, so love that! They didn't have caramel though.

Yelp
Decided to pop in for a min to take a quick meeting and get a caffeine refresher and Im sure glad I did. Greeted warmly by the two gentlemen behind the bar and I asked what they do well there (this is an artisanal shop after all). One proceeded to ask what kind of beverage I enjoyed and off I went to ordering a flat white then the oat milk caught my attention. Yes, OAT MILK! He was kind enough to allow me to sample it before I actually ordered it and it was SO good. I also ordered the berry granola bar since it was a toss up between that and a biscotti. Grabbed a seat at the bar and the coffee was dropped off to me. First thing I noticed was the flavor of the beans. This particular day they had espresso beans from Peru which were amazing. The coffee was smooth and rich and the bar was fruity and delish. The only drawback was the noise level but I dont think that's a spot to work at - merely just to chill and enjoy delicious coffee!

Aja B.

Yelp
Cute place with a nice vibe and lovely staff-- a somewhat hidden gem. I'm a big coffee nerd and they knocked it out of the park. They serve the beans from a few of my favorite roasters-- Ceremony and Onyx. I always appreciate when baristas put in the effort to consistently dial in and really get it right. A lot of love and care goes into this place. Will definitely be back next time I'm in town. :) Cheers.

Yelp
If you're from NYC and miss those Manhattan coffee shops, make a visit to The Coffee Bar. Don't let the fact that it's in the ground floor of a glass office building fool you. Once you walk inside, you're transported away from the stiff, government feel that DC can have (Though this is quickly changing) and into a magical world reminiscent of the Big Apple. It's a small coffee shop mainly designed for people to get their artisan latte or tea to go, but if you want to stay, the atmosphere is inspiring and there's window seating and one long wooden table. It's decorated simply yet NYC artsy. The coffee is good (Their iced latte is one of the best in DC) and they sell an array of pastries under a small glass panel. You can't go wrong at The Coffee Bar.
google avatar

Kayla H.

Yelp
Reality check: maybe I'm just not hip enough...or I'm getting old...ooooor this place needs sugar-free syrup(s), (more) seating that isn't uncomfortable, and more items on their menu. I want to like this place, but it's lack of warmth and cozy seating put it into my "probably not" column for cafes I prefer. HOWEVER! The decaf 2% latte I had was exceptional, and the music was nice. The atmosphere = 1 star. The coffee = 5 stars
google avatar

Tarra T.

Yelp
This spot is legit!! They have Onyx Coffee beans, probably the best coffee I've ever had and it's roasted in Arkansas!! Not a ton of seating - definitely not a spot to work for hours but for a delish cup of java, it's your stuff!! No almond milk though - only soy and oat. Oat definitely is the fatter of the lactose free options and soy has too much estrogen, which I'm so good on...feel me?!?
google avatar

Tara L.

Yelp
Soy Dirty Tara Three words, neatly written, line by line on my cup made me smile after ordering a large, Dirty Chai with soy milk. I'm soy dirty, y'all! But I love this cute little coffee bar. The space isn't huge, so don't expect too much sitting room to perch for long at a location surrounded by so many offices. However, the baristas behind the counter are quick, so it's a perfect choice for a quick grab-and-go! The interior accents are warm and inviting and my Dirty Chai did me just dirty enough. If I'm ever around the area mid-day, I'll be sure to come back again!
google avatar

Vishal S.

Yelp
This is most definitely my go to place for some good (upscale) pour over coffee (and other treats). The store has been popular and busy since they opened a few months back and have managed to offer the same level of service and coffee since the start. They offer a small number of coffee options that are all very good! They do offer coffee from Onyx Coffee from Fayetteville, Arkansas - one of my favorite coffee roasters. Their pour overs are made well with consistently and I even like their cold brew :) Staff is friendly and always ready to recommend a drink if needed. A good addition to the busy coffee scene in DC
google avatar

Yelp
Dark pools surrounded by flecks of white not only describe the massive array of coffee and espresso, but also the dark circles under my squinting eyes as I cue-up at TCB. Located in a bit of a food-desert, TCB is nourished by droves of business-dress clad patrons, who themselves are nourished by choices of drip, pour-over or espresso-based caffeine. Don't let the pre-9am lines throw you, the staff is diligent and efficient. If you are there for a quick pastry and a cup, or for a "coffee meeting", TCB has just enough space to provide. Whenever I try a new coffee joint, I go for my classic; soy latte (some days I get an extra shot..cause...you know...some days...you REALLY need it). It's very easy to see if a place can make a drink when it has two components! TCB uses a soy milk that is not overly sweetened, and fresh ground beans that were perfectly nutty and not at all bitter. Win. A light in a dark fog of morning sleep; an oasis an suit desert!

Yelp
Sunny and intimate, this coffee shop is as close to an insta lover and coffee lovers dream. Everything about the interior screams hip and trendy from the decor on the walls (neon sign, hello!) to the tastefully rustic sugar/milk area. The entire front is windows so there's a ton of natural light. Limited seating which on one hand is great because it means a more cozy atmosphere. On the other hand it also means the shop is small and if there's more than like 5 customers then it's awkwardly cramped and you have to shimmy around other people and the tables. The coffee is also quite good. It's a smaller shop so there's more focus on the quality. I'm by no means a coffee connoisseur but I can tell the difference between good and bad coffee and this place is certainly quite delicious.
google avatar

Ruth C.

Yelp
I feel so hipster but I keep coming back once or twice a week to hemorrhage through my caffeine budget. Lines are often out the door during peak hours, with very limited seating inside. The baristas here make the drinks with care, so budget for that wait accordingly. Croissants are wonderfully flakey, and their cannelés are quite large. Dirty chai latte (far superior to the chai latte) and London Fog are both delicious... and cardamom latte is great for cooler weather.
google avatar

Julie C.

Yelp
I stopped in because I was freezing my hands off and had a few minutes to kill before a meeting nearby. I love the Coffee Bar's whole aesthetic, but it is a small and cramped space and I often see lines out the door - which can definitely turn people off. That said, I had the best soy latte I've ever had here and I definitely want to try more complicated items to see how they measure up. There is very little seating, and I can't imagine ever trying to do work in there with the cramped feel, constant noise, and crowds, so definitely grab your items and leave. Baristas are friendly and quick and coffee is great, next time I'm in the area I might wait in that line to get a another quick caffeine fix!
google avatar

Tiffany T.

Yelp
My experience was fine. It's definitely more artisanal as another reviewer put it. I think you'd enjoy this place if you liked talking about coffee bean origins and notes and roasting processes. Personally not for me since I'm a basic iced oatmilk latte girl.
google avatar

Kristy W.

Yelp
Small but stylish coffee shop. They don't have lots of places to sit so not a perfect working spot for me. I'll try dirty chai next time to check out its specialties. Wow the London Fog is sooooo good
google avatar

Liz H.

Yelp
Nice spot, great service, and delicious coffee. No complaints. I was actually motivated to leave a review bc the guys at the register and barista were friendly. That is unusual for coffee places. I noticed and thank you! The iced latte was just what I wanted too.
google avatar

Yelp
The Coffee Bar has some of the best cups of coffee in our highly caffeinated city! I work very close by, but it was only last week that I came for the first time. Based on the awesome tasting notes they had written out at the time, I went for an Americano, because they had this wonderful sounding espresso bean from Brazil. WOW. It was one of the smoothest and best tasting coffees I've ever had! I didn't ever want my cup to run dry! The space is small, but they make good use of what they have. The decor and high ceilings create a fun style, and the staff are all friendly and laid back, and just everything that cold chains, especially Starbucks, are not. Going in there feels more like being at a local hangout in a small community. The day after I first came I was back to buy some beans for my office. We can't afford an expensive habit like this normally, but we needed something good to brew for our board meeting that afternoon, and I knew just the place! I have a strong preference for Latin American coffees, so I bought some Colombian beans, and they happily ground them for me for our run of the mill coffee pot. This is where I'll be going all the time now for coffee at work, and I hope to convert my office mates, too!
google avatar

Khadija C.

Yelp
Cute little space, came here on an off day and wish I hadn't asked for my latte to go since It's always a busy place every time I walk by. It's pretty centrally located to a lot of spots so its a good place to come and enjoy a cup of coffee here. Love the decor and the simplicity of the design. The latte was good, I enjoyed it. I'll be back for more cardamom latte.
google avatar

Jasmine C.

Yelp
Got an iced latte and would only give a 2 stars. The coffee is very watered down. The way they make their iced coffee is that they add a lot of ice into a shaker then pour in the coffee and milk. By shaking it bubbles go in taking up more volume (cough cough less coffee) and because of this, some coffee was just wasted as the cup wouldn't fit. Just do it the normal way! Add ice straight into the cup! The staff was friendly but service was extremely slow! There was only one barista making the drinks while three were talking to customers. Had to wait almost 10min for my coffee. Also the space is very cramped - only good for grab and go (if it doesn't take so long to make the coffee), not for staying and doing work
google avatar

Kimi S.

Yelp
This little coffee shop has been powering me up with lattes for the past year or so it's been open. There's a certain hip city roughness to the decor with it's dirty gray concrete walls, electric blue neon signage, and cold, metal stools. But the big open windows, friendly baristas and the delicate stacks of locally made pastries keeps thing warm. There is no WiFi at this location (even the free XFinity WiFi that usually works all across the city is dead here) which is usually a big no-no for me but I took a chance and my beautifully spiced cardamom latte and decided to spend some time catching up with a friend and it was wonderful. Other than that, it's grab and go and I suggest taking your mug to one of the many nearby hotels in the area and perching up (I like the Mayflower when I'm feeling posh or Tabard Inn when I want to hide out in a dark, cozy room).
google avatar

Ariana R.

Yelp
This place is first of all amazingly designed. From the pops of real to the subway tile and the neon sign. Secondly, the ice dirty chai is heavenly. So much flavor in one cup! There aren't a ton of treat options but there are some. The chocolate peanut pay bar is vegan and gluten free. A great companion for the Chai. Not a lot of seating, but I'll definitely be coming back for more coffee at the least.

Yelp
TCB. Taking care of business. Or the Coffee Bar. The Coffee Bar serves up your coffee from a variety of independent, third-wave roasters, including Ceremony, Verve, Bespoken, Onyx, and Novo (...sounds like an odd cult gathering). So for those who love the aforementioned roasters, fuel your caffeine addiction with some TCB. On tap drip, espresso, (vanilla, chai, dirty) latte, cappuccino, mocha, #dailycortado. TCB makes them all with passion. And if you're not one for coffee, you can get some hot chocolate or teas. They also have a selection of pastries from local suppliers including Hawthrone, Sweet Lobby, Bethesda Bagels, and Paisley Fig. Their milk is sourced from a local farm in Lancaster County. In summary, if you're a coffee snob or pride yourself in repping and supporting local businesses, TCB is definitely for you. I stopped by after a meeting in DC to get some much needed caffeine one afternoon. The coffee counter/bar area is décor goals. Chalkboard menu boards (with some of the most beautiful handwriting), coffee paraphernalia, coffee beans, glasses, succulents, and matchy robin egg blue pendant lights and counter wall. Not a whole lot of seating but there are a few if you want to plop down and get a good short story in before your next class or meeting. Most of the cups that come from behind the counter are to go. Friendly staff who are obviously having fun and love what they do. Thank you for TCB.

Yelp
The 17th St. location is tucked away in an otherwise sterile, high rise, concrete landscape, so the eclectic and hipster feel of this place when you walk in is uber refreshing and transports you a bit. I was thrilled to hear Amy Winehouse crooning gently in the background. Pastries on display are sourced from bakeries throughout the DMV like The Sweet Lobby and bagels are from Bethesda Bagels. Nice picks but everything looked a bit stale. Seating is at a bare minimum and bench style so don't expect a lot of privacy or space to squat for too long. On the plus side, the long line moves quickly and service is patient, friendly, and cheery. 3 stars for ambiance, service, and representing many 3rd-wave coffee roasters. 1 star for the worst, most watered down tasting cortado (with bad microfoam art to boot) that I've ever had. Also, I was hoping to try a biscotti but they had them sitting in jars like pens, open to customers to touch (or cough on). Not sure why they weren't placed in the display case with the rest of the food. 2 stars because they need room to improve on their caffeinated beverages and devise a way to better guard and maintain the freshness of their food.
google avatar

Heather L.

Yelp
Was a regular here for about a month, but decided to wean off the caffeine. Right around the corner from my apt, this little gem is amazing! I've had their dirty chai and iced coffee, and I LOVE it! I always bring my own hydroflask, they charge me for a small and fill it up. I absolutely love their dirty chai, probably the best that I've ever had. Their service is great, very kind and welcoming.

Yelp
I love this coffee bar near my job and I REALLY love the staff and their turmeric latte is so good and the venue is designed beautifully so you can definitely flick it up.

Yelp
Come here and expect: gourmet coffee & tea, delicious snacks, take it to go cause it's a small space What I got from it: It fits the environs of being in a business complex area since it is trendy, gourmet, but also just a quick stop. This second location of TCB does not worry over seating. There are some bar stools and table space, but you wouldn't want to hang out for an excessive period of time. I love that they search for great coffee roasters throughout the Nation. It's wonderful to support the local roasters, but it's rare to find coffee beans that are from well-known roasters in distant cities. TCB will help educate you in this aspect. On 11/2/15, I was able to enjoy a pour over of Bespoken's Finca Chanjul: expect dark roast notes with a medium body and potent finish that lasts awhile. Come here and not only get a caffeine fix, but a gourmet one at that! Smiles are plentiful here too. ;)

Yelp
I love the coffee here - no need for sugar!- and they have such a cute space. Carlos, Dalton and Kate are so friendly too.

Yelp
My go-to for coffee near work. I'm not a coffee snob (perhaps one in the making though), but do feel that truly well-made coffee is hard to come by. Coffee Bar is an exception to that, consistently providing quality coffee and friendly service. The specialty drinks are a bit pricey, but it is around market value for the quantity ($5 for the cardamom latte - though not going to lie, I will buy it on special occasions because it is SO. GOOD.) Love yourself and go here.
