The Best Haunted and Spooky Bars and Restaurants in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"What was once the Southeast Grand venue Lovecraft is now the horror-themed Coffin Club, one of the city’s few spots where goths can dance to darkwave and Siouxsie Sioux lookalikes blend into the crowd. Portraits of Alice Cooper hang among the skeletons and chandeliers, and the club consistently hosts dark industrial, dream wave, and EBM acts and DJs. Check out the calendar for upcoming acts." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

The Coffin Club is a Goth themed concert venue, bar, and dance venue. I have been there six plus times to see music acts like Die Robot, Matt Hart, and Curse Mackey. There are two floors. The basement floor has a separate stage, a full bar, booths, and DJ booth and uni-sex bathroom. It has been closed since winter for reasons I have yet to pin down. The main floor has two bars, a small stage, and a DJ booth. Booth are sequestered around the many rooms surrounding the stage. I have no idea if the place has food. The door only takes cash to enter for events, unless you have bought your ticket before hand on-line. This is a goth bar, so dress accordingly. The patrons all seem to have a good time and I have never seen people act poorly.

Aaaaaaamazing. I’m not from Portland, where I live there are no goth clubs. So this place place was just so amazing! I got there right when they open, so I was the first one there and got to really explore. The decorations are so cool, the place is huge. And if you are alternative, you’ll fit right in. Also, the vibe of everyone was amazing, so sweet and welcoming !

Google
So awesome! We went during one of the busiest nights Friday 13th, there was a show; went amazing. Great open areas for dancing but also loved the places to be able to sit. Great rooms and different areas to walk around in, loved having options for different rooms with different music. Fantastic ambiance! Everyone was friendly and accepting. Definitely a must go. Drinks were well priced. Recommend ticket in advance. Only thing wish there were more food options, great vegan selection but when wanting to be a carnivore nothing right there, had to travel to another bar down the road...

First time going here. Nice club atmosphere. Smaller than expected, but there are some other areas I did not seek out. For a Wednesday night about 10p, it was pretty busy. Good vibes there. Didn't rate for food since we did not get any. Maybe next time. 🎃🎃

Google
The vibes were awesome, the performers were amazing, the hosts were also amazing, and I would definitely come here again. Everyone was cool, the bartender was the only one who had issues, he just seemed like he had a bad day. Hopefully his attitude changes

I've been going here for years (since it was LC). They host a variety of cool events. On my best friend's wedding night, we all came out to Coffin Club and there was an incredible drag show that evening. It was so good, and we had such a wonderful and memorable time that night. It's a very safe and inclusive space, spooky 80's goth vibes and it's awesome. Downstairs they have a venue space and large dance floor. Last night I saw Sidewalks & Skeletons there and it was fantastic!! They play different types of music upstairs and downstairs. Bars and restrooms upstairs and downstairs as well.

Google
I had a great time here. It kind of feels like you're in a haunted house because of the lighting, decor, and fog machine, but I like it. Random people will appear mysteriously into your field of vision, probably smiling and hanging out with friends. Everyone I talked to here including the bartender was very kind. I think this is a good bar if you're an introvert because there is a lot of little places you can step away to be a little more recluse. I came on a thursday which I know is not like peak clubbing time but I had a lovely time and will be back.

Google
Amazing concert! Saw Devon Thompson, Haunt Me, and Dead on a Sunday. Venue is a little bit of a maze, but has great drinks and patrons are super diverse. Such a welcoming environment. Will be returning.

Yelp
I don't think they serve any food here, just drinks. The drinks were good, strong. But the place you order at is weirdly sandwiched between the (raised) seating area and dance floor. When the line gets long it feels like you're blocking the front entrance. We stayed at our table (maybe ten feet from the front counter) and the waitress gave my sister a hard time for grabbing us a round of drinks. Wouldn't sell her three drinks with us right there (mind you we all three went up and showed ID with the first round, and showed ID to get in). I had to come down, and be standing next to her to say, "yes, the second drink is for me." Which was super weird. There is sometimes a cover, no cover when we went this evening which was a fun surprise. It was my first time coming but my sister (in the photo) had been here quite a few times before. The music is great, they mix it up quite a bit, but it never stops. It does get warm in there, and when we first arrived we were assaulted with the smell of body odor... I hate to say it but after a few minutes you stop noticing it. They have a super cool vending machine that has all different types of fun items for purchase. I would definitely come back if I was out in the area!

Yelp
Upon further reflection, and upon really getting to know some of the staff at Coffin Club, I must rescind portions of my previous review. This is a really fun place to hear very good alternative/goth/industrial bands perform, as well as some stellar spinning, by the likes of Just Dave, and many more lovely folk. The staff is eclectic, and many are delightfully gender ambiguous, trans, other,- wonderful! I certainly did not mean to hurt anyone's feelings with my inaccurate and insensitive comments. Perhaps, I needed the right ambassadors to show me the error of my ways. Thanks, William! Much love to my friends at the Coffin Club, who work tirelessly to concoct refreshing cocktails and to entertain the public, many nights of the week

Yelp
I'm not going to trash talk based on a bad experience like some folks, because running a club is hard and being staff is harder.... And frankly, Drunk people are awful. Generally, this is a decent club with good music. I appreciate the reasonable drink prices too .... Yes, prices have gone up, this is how late stage capitalism works y'all ...but it's still cheaper than SF, Seattle, and LA. Also, If you want fewer crowds and more old school goth/industrial vibes, avoid the weekends and hit the weekdays and the live shows. The musicians coming through here are awesome. Support them! But there are a few legit things that would improve this place leaps and bounds, that I'm constantly baffled by. Bad dance floor flow: People line up for bars THROUGH THE DANCE FLOORS. WWWHHYYYYYY???? The upstairs dance floor is already tiny and gets destroyed by arriving patrons, so it's impossible when folks start lining up for the upstairs bar in the front room. Why they don't just run the bar out of the back room is wild to me....And downstairs, where the only proper dance floor lives, the line for the bar bisects the whole space!!!. Instead of having folks line up along the edge of the dance floor or at an angle, they allow the whole dance floor to be blocked. No coat check: look y'all, I get it.... Portland is still a charming, generally safe town, but for goddess sake, it rains half the year, set up a damn coat check for your patrons.

Yelp
Was really looking forward to this place.... Had a couple of drinks, everything was going fabulous, then the vibe was destroyed by one of the bartenders. I didn't end up tipping one of the times bc I planned on tipping a $50 bill at the end of my night on top of through my card and she had the audacity to call me out on it fully ruined my night and me and my friends are probably never going back. Thanks bartender! Everyone else and bouncer was super nice, but the bartender was rude the moment we walked in. Not to mention you can't keep a tab open lol. Weird experience. Next time don't call out on tips or else you definitely won't get any

Yelp
First time visitor, saw a live show on a Thursday night. Small space for a show but it worked out. The band could have used a little more room on stage though! Decent beer selection and friendly door guy, fun night!

Dylan F.

Yelp
Personally love hitting this place up on weekends. There have been weekends where the music wasn't amazing and the crowds are full of douchers but that's just the way any club goes, though I will say the crowds here have a tendency to be way more chill than not. The nights that go well are awesome and full of fun. I'm a big fan of the basement and alley way out back, up stairs can be a bit cramped at times. Overall I would recommend, just pay attention to the events and cover fees on their website before you blindly show up

Yelp
I went here for a show by myself last night, and had the best experience. Parking was on the street about a block away. Doors were open at 8:00 for an 8:30 show in the basement, cash at the door (there is an ATM inside). The guy in front was really polite and welcoming since I came prepared with cash & ID. The ambiance is consistent with the venue/bar's name...took a little bit to adjust to lack of lighting. Also important to watch your step! There is a bar upstairs and downstairs that both take credit cards, and both bartenders were very nice. The bartender upstairs even made a great recommendation based off the drink list. There's a food cart downstairs outside with vegan options. It's a fun place to dress up (or not) and dance/see live music. There is a lot of seating throughout and a place to get fresh air. 10/10 would recommend.

Yelp
No frills goth bar. Basic cocktails and an abundance of heavy metal. Great for late night.
google avatar

Nicholas W.

Yelp
The atmosphere and live music were incredible and puts the bar in a league of its own. Can't say I've ever experienced something similar. Didn't have much interaction with the staff so can't give an in depth review of service. The drinks were ok but the gin and tonic was definitely a little too strong, which made it feel very much like the main point of going was just for the theme, not for the drinking.

Yelp
Fine for my first club experience, but I definitely would not come back especially with a $25 entry fee. I went on Halloween, and the music was awful. Maybe one or two 'goth' songs the entire night, and it was the mainstream smiths stuff that everybody and their mother has heard. What's the point of being a place for goths if they try their hardest to be the most surface level and pretentious they can? Staff was rude and gazed judgementally upon me and my friends, even though we are literally goth. Only white men working there, which didn't feel like an inviting Portland place. Drinks were the most outrageous prices I've ever seen, I'm pretty sure I was charged $20 for a shot of vodka. Like wtf? A family of rats lives outside, by the smoking area. Which was definitely a nice distraction from the horrible music and vibes inside. Until you take into consideration that the only food they offer is from a food truck in that very outside area. It makes you wonder how close those rats get to the food they serve to wasted club goers... I didn't eat here and I recommend you dont, better yet just skip this place altogether. The place was draining and a drag when I expected to have a good club experience, especially from one of the only 'goth' establishments in Portland. Not to mention, lines are outrageous and by the time I started to feel a buzz from the first drink, I was completely sober, and irritated, by the time I got my next one.

Yelp
This place rules. What a special experience to be able to dance all night to club music that my parents were dancing to. Great music, friendly staff despite it being packed, good food from the truck outside, and in Portland fashion--an AMAZING outside area. The person working the truck actually gave us our food for free due to the wait--we never expect this but it was so appreciated. Can't wait to go back! Long live the goths

Yelp
LOVE!!! New name, and new owners since I'd first heard of it years ago. I'm so happy I've discovered The Coffin Club. I had heard things years back, but that was all to do with the original owner being a predator. As I said, new owner, new name, and all good things happening at Club Coffin:). I felt safe, comfortable, in this gothic techno-rock-80s styled club. Concerts in the basement, as well as DJs and dance floors. Upstairs was a spectacular DJ who absolutely made my night with the best 80s set, and more dance floors. Plenty of bars around the club, so lines were never too slow. The crowd was a mixed age, but I'd say mostly 30's with some 20's and 40's and a few 40+ sprinkled in. I haven't found a place in Portland that feels like home to me to dance and let go in some time. I think this could be my place from everything I experienced last night, my first time out at Coffin.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years, since back when it was called The Lovecraft. I am very happy that they changed the name and removed the iconography depicting H.P. Lovecraft- the whole bigoted social hygienist vibe definitely doesn't mesh well with a goth club. Even with historical context he was a vile human being, so huge props to them! The space is very large- there is the ground floor which has a stage, a quieter back area with tables and a dual bar that goes both directions for each portion. I hear there is a basement now, but it was shuttered and all I could do was look down into the depths with disappointment. I mean hey, I'm trying to get into the mood! On my most recent visit post-Covid, the bouncer was very friendly and chill, but the bartender was curt and slightly rude. I can understand if there was a huge line and it was toward the end of the night, but it was Thursday right at opening so I was a bit confused. I wanted to keep my tab open but now you pay as you go? I mean I'm totally fine with that, but it was a bit odd and felt like I was being forced out (you know when the bartender hands you the check without asking if you want another?) Prices are good and they host many good shows- I especially like that they have drag shows and a variety of acts, not just goth. The ambiance is the main attraction- there are fog machines and dark lights all over the place, along with cobwebs and creepy decorations. As Ministry says, it's like Everyday is Halloween. Besides the lukewarm experience with the bartender, the only other issue is parking. I definitely recommend taking a Lyft because there is almost no parking- also assuming you may get drunk anyways. It is a fun place and a great way to spend an evening and meet new people- it's not my favorite goth venue, but for Portland it does a pretty damn good job.

Yelp
Amazing. Just so cool. This place is cool the DJ's, Door people, and SOME bar staff are alright but be careful with them because they're very much the type to be like "I'm not serving you" lol it's funny but I dont care enough

Yelp
My spooky bride had this place on our Bach party itinerary. We were a small party of 5 and they refused to let us in. They were incredibly rude and stated they do not allow celebrations of any kind. There was nothing posted about this rule on their website and caught us off guard. They care more about remaining cool and underground. We were very disappointed as that was one of our favorite spots.
google avatar

Milo W.

Yelp
Such a cool place, especially around Halloween! The decorations were incredible, the music was so good and they have two different types of music upstairs and downstairs. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Andrew D.

Yelp
I'm surprised by the negative reviews cause I've never had a bad time here! The decor is on point and the staff has always been friendly. I recently took my coworkers from out of town here and they had a great time. I do sometimes get bad vibes from the regulars (who are usually goth). They can probably see through my black outfit and natural black hair that I'm just a normie poser.
google avatar

Amber F.

Yelp
What a unique place! It feels never ending. You start out in a small room then travel through another small room down some stairs into a big room then outside! So many little nooks and crannies. I really appreciated their rule that everyone purchasing a drink needs to be at the bar when ordering. This is to help make sure everyone is staying safe and everyone gets the drink the way they intended to get it.

Charlotte B.

Yelp
Bartender turned owner isn't working. Rude bartender, no water or cups, and she yelled at me for it : "i can't do it!" The basement looks like an unfinished emo teen did it with their parents permission while playing d&d and being served milk Never again

Lera S.

Yelp
Came in at 1:30 and got denied at the front. He said it was closing time? I've been here before and that was never an issue. Sad. Felt like he chose not to let us in? This place has always made me feel inclusive and all I wanted was just dance and that is not what i got. Wah be nice to people?
google avatar

Lee G.

Yelp
Love this place. My partner and I are from New York and were looking for a place to get our alternative venue fix, and this does it for us. Friendly bouncers and crowd. The space is pretty massive and is often packed with wonderfully strange-looking individuals. The vegan food cart in the alley outside is adorable. I love how many different spaces there are, you can really spend a LONG time here without getting bored. Not a big fan of the cover charge, which is $10 minimum and gets up to like $30 depending on who's DJing.
google avatar

Maribella S.

Yelp
The drinks were very strong and the music was awesome. I thought the seating was very uncomfortable, and it was tilted as if to discourage you from sitting. There's a back room for sitting and talking, but it wasn't ideal for that, considering it's placement near the music. The staff and drinks were great, but the design of the place didn't make sense.

Zoey M.

Yelp
DO NOT RECOMMEND. Extremely rude, not professional at all. Sad they don't know how to run a business.
google avatar

Micah B.

Yelp
i'm going to keep this brief--i'm disabled--in a wheelchair, if you really needed to know... my space was in no way accommodated or even acknowledged as regular or appropriate on the dance floor. the staff was incredibly intolerant of the space i simply needed to take up, and one of them, the one wearing an incredibly tacky spiky pleather vest and similarly garish pink hair, even rolled her eyes at me when i asked for help closing a gap in the drink line... if you love long waits for watered down beverages and intolerant staff, this is a destination for the ages!

Moe M.

Yelp
Rancid experience for lgbt+ attendee... I went to one of their drag events this June and staff did absolutely nothing about 2 people who were trying to grope the performers. The MC told them off but they kept harassing them. Lack of action on the part of the club to protect their performers (especially in times where drag performers are becoming even more marginalized) was very off putting. What's more I have personally had a negative experience with the food cart vendor in the outdoor patio area. He was saying something and I couldn't hear him and as it turned out he was yelling at me (and many others) to not lean on the fence. I told him I couldn't hear what he said before and he said "f___ you" which then escalated into him shoving me across the walkway. Horrible experience. I told multiple staff members on site about this encounter and they did nothing. If you're lgbt they'll take your money but their attention stops there.

Lisa A.

Yelp
Fun, trippy spot to go drink and dance at. Fun techno beats and lights. Would like to go back if they step up their drink and food game a bit.
google avatar

Chris K.

Yelp
The Coffin Club is a comfortable place full of personality that accepts everyone. Pretty people, freaks, geeks, and gawkers! Needs more bathrooms but otherwise a cool place to explore. It's like Portland's version of Dusk To Dawn! I haven't found the head vampire's crypt yet but I keep looking!
google avatar

C C.

Yelp
I just had a similar experience where the door guy was kicking many people, different groups, off the line for being "drunk." They weren't and some were part of the scene. He was having a real bad night and thinking people were giving him attitudes maybe? I don't get it. You know the lines are going to go back to the way they were before lockdown right? Which is not full capacity from what I know, so let's keep the scene alive by letting paying customers in. ETA: Okay, I just read more reviews and I get it now. The scene used to be more inclusive, especially of one of their own, but somehow this little place is Studio 54. SMH. Owner needs to have door guy checkity check himself before he wrecks the business. Star Theatre is nicer but similar gate keepers in terms of attendees. Judging by age and face fillers, y'all are not vampires, so let's let the youngins have their fun too. Do you think your $5, dirty looks, and slow floating across the dancefloor is going to sustain these nights?

Mateo G.

Yelp
Kinda did not meet my high expectations, so maybe thats my fault, but it was alright. I kinda wish there drinks were better, but the theme was alright and the music was good. Heard it was more love craft like, but I did not get that vibe which was a huge bummer

Bob S.

Yelp
I've been going here since it was Lovecraft and... I have mixed feelings. In the pre-pandemic days, it used to feel more cliquey but it was also more homey. Within the past year or so, they've expanded into the basement, and it still feels cliquey but less so than before, I think just because there's more random people showing up. The vibes can be great, or they can be really off. Sometimes the space is just way too big for the number of people. I've met a lot of people here, but sometimes people are just too f*cking cool. I really wish we could drop the pretentious BS (I don't think that's what being goth/punk/etc is really about). I don't know exactly when it happened, but in the last 6 or so months they jacked their prices WAY up. A drink that would have been $6 or $7 before is now $10. I mean, inflation is real, but their prices seem a bit exorbitant. Feels like they're cashing in. Some people might drink less, which could actually be a good thing, but maybe people won't come back after they feel like they've been ripped off, or at least not as often. If you're from LA or NYC, maybe the drink prices still feel cheap in comparison
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
Did my husband drag me here for a noise show? He sure did. Did I love it? Surprising myself, I sure did. Lovecraft is a fun goth/horror bar that'd make HP proud, from the dance floor fog machine to the macabre decor. I mean, there's even a coffin I noticed people taking selfies in. We paid a small cover - maybe $5 each - but well worth it. Even a quick glance at their website shows a fully fleshed out calendar of entertainment night after night, and we really enjoyed the show we came in for. The bartender seemed a little put off but the cocktails were creative with great names - i.e. Grim Grinning Ghost: Absinthe, cold brewed Jasmine Pearl Green Tea Pearls, & Orange Blossom water. Not usually my scene but fun to pop in for an hour.

Von-Aldrynne E.

Yelp
Me and my girlfriend went here a couple weeks ago and the experience was fantastic. The bartender was nice and the everybody was dancing and having a great time. However, I went tonight and while I was talking to my friends, I accidentally took a step back and barely touched one of the bartenders who clearly saw me and my friends in front of the bar. Immediately, he walked over to the security guard and clearly complained about us. He then started to throw a tantrum and broke a glass behind the bar while making eye contact with us. It was clearly an accident but if your bartenders are going to throw a fit publicly in front of customers, it's not a good look. We will not be coming back and we do NOT recommend this place to anyone. I ended up telling the security guard that I was sorry and he replied with "I saw the whole thing and I'm sorry." The bartender was a guy with teased blonde hair. If you're ever there and he's around, watch your step.

Yelp
Lovecraft is great. Initially I had some reservations about going to the "goth bar" since I haven't been anywhere close to "goth" since my all black wardrobe days in middle school. However, I quickly found that while many people are dressed very gothicly, it's a much more open and welcoming place than most bars I've been to. They've got some delicious cocktails, awesome decor that keeps you looking around, cool events, and two dance rooms on the weekends with a mix of 80s music as well as the more industrial sort. My first visit to Lovecraft was short: my friend and I dropped in looking to dance, but the industrial music and skulls on the wall freaked my friend out so we left. My second visit was with a more seasoned friend who'd been often. We came for the Burlynomicon Burlesque show and it was awesome! We loved every minute of it and definitely want to go back. The third visit was with the same friend and my partner. We just came for dancing and danced the night away. The front room where you enter ended up feeling more like a rave, with very industrial music; while the back room was playing awesome 80s tunes. I love the fog machine and the lighting. I'd 100 percent pick the Lovecraft over places like Dig a Pony or White Owl nearby for a night of dancing. The crowd is more respectful (and also a wider range of ages) and its not nearly as packed here. The decoration is awesome. We took many selfies in that coffin! I loved just looking up at the walls. The only thing I don't like about Lovecraft is the bathrooms. One of the doors opens pretty easily even if locked and it feels pretty grungy with all the graffiti. I guess it just helps cement the theme. If you haven't been to Lovecraft yet but have been wondering, you should go. Check out one of the burlesque shows or go dancing. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Upstairs only was open when I visited (a Wednesday night) but the darkwave / goth post punk mix was so good. Wish it was a little darker (a little too bright) and definitely louder but the vibe was still really good. Honestly the music/DJ made up for it but I never felt enveloped by it. Would go again. Dress for the dead vibe

Sally W.

Yelp
I've been coming out to this bar for a few years now and I love it, especially now with the new downstairs area and the patio. Everyone is always so nice to me but I must say, dj Barbie Saint is like my favorite person there, she is the most welcoming and friendly and not to mention a great dj !

Samantha W.

Yelp
Love the environment and music (especially downstairs), do not love the drink lines. They have a one drink per person rule, so you can't order something for yourself and another person if they're not also visible to the bartender. Kind of irritating and I assume contributes to the long lines. The bartender with blond shaggy hair is rather unfriendly, so keep your drink orders basic and quick. Highly recommend pregaming elsewhere so you can spend your time dancing and not standing in line.

Austin P.

Yelp
Terrible music. Ill admit i am a music snob especially with electronic music. In the basement they were playing the worst electronic music ive ever heard. Not worth $15 entry fee! Also im not goth tho so maybe if you're goth itll be okay.

Yelp
Awesome typical hipster Portland place. Love the backyard with food cart and atmosphere in general

Yelp
If you're a woman or a BIPOC that does not fit Brenden's standard, DO NOT COME HERE! As a group of six, we had everything ready to go to enjoy a night in their bar when Brenden antagonized us at the door. We were ready to enter with payment and proof of vaccination already checked when he decided to price gauge us. When I questioned why he gave us a different amount then the party in front of us he responded with "Get the fuck out!" Brenden took advantage of his position as the door holder and had a issue with women asking a question about a difference in prices. If you want to have a good night, check in with Scout who is actually considerate of his clientele without discriminating against woman of color who are part of the scene.

Yelp
Lovecraft is one of my top five favorite bars in Portland, for a few reasons. One, they have a monthly synthwave night that's awesome. Absolutely love Vikt0r Nova and the other DJs! Next, the epic lighting and decor. There is even a coffin to hang out in in the little back room. The coolest part of the bar is actually the back area which is I think only open on the weekends but it's a must see! I'd love to see them have some sours on draft at some point but I'm happy with the fact they've gone some in cans now. Their cocktails are also good!
google avatar

Lexi G.

Yelp
This spot for all the freaky witches out there. I had a blast talking to the tender and may have enjoyed the drinks a little too much- boy are they strong. The music was a bit too loud for my liking even in the outside area but i suppose that's to be expected with a dance club.

Ethan E.

Yelp
Went a few times for the amazing music, okay drinks and quick service. There's two bars, use them both! Patrons are friendly, dance floor is always good. The other night a car flipped over in the intersection right outside. The employees/regulars were quick to help. I know themed bars can be silly-haha-funtimes but the response says a lot about the kind of community built at Coffin Club.

Yelp
Great intimate goth club in Portland. My cousin recommended me to visit here for my first trip to Portland, and I instantly put it on my to-visit list. When I arrived, it was a lot more chill than I envisioned. Maybe it was because it was rather early in the night when we came, (roughly 5-6ish), and they were getting set up for some event, but my boyfriend at least wanted to check out the place before our reservation at DIY Bar in another part of town (we were visiting from out of state, and were trying to hit up as many places as we could during our short time in Portland). The music was nice, very thumpy gloom and doom gothy aesthetic. It was a cold December night too, and tea was available from the bar. They were served in this beautiful mugs that were so gorgeously goth, I wanted to take them home with me. We finished our tea and were on our way, and it was so nice to at least spend a bit of time here and partake the goth subculture of Portland.

Yelp
This used to be one of my favorite bars. Always welcoming, killer vibes, and just a good time. Last time i attempted to go i couldn't even get inside without being harassed by people outside demanding to know our vaccination status. We tried to mind our own business but sadly everyone around just watched and implied the door man wouldn't let us in unless we carried our cards. I have no idea if this is true, because when i said we would take our chances we were threatened. So we left. Portland is going downhill along with all the classics that made portland special. I would hope that when the doorman came out to check on people waiting he would have intervened and kicked the people starting drama away, but sady not. I miss the lovecraft.

Yelp
Great Music Venue On The Eastside of Portland SITREP Whenever I troop through Portland, I enjoy stopping in at The Lovecraft Bar - any day of the week actually - but especially when the Thursday night event *SHADOWPLAY* is in session. THE SETUP The bar really is a smallish affair, but it's got a LOT of character ooozing from off the walls and out of the floor (and I really mean *oooooozing*) - it's almost as if the venue itself is sweating in some sort of Praga Khan fiendish fantasy! LIVE MUSIC I have caught some great love musical acts here - not big names like Rammstein or Def Leppard (or even CombiChrist, for that matter) - the music acts are energized and perform right in the middle of the main floor, the musicians with their guitars and keyboards, getting right up in our faces - it's quite invigorating actually. DJ MUSIC But after the bands perform, the format transitions straight the DJ who inundates the entire venue with the throbbing rhythms of Industrial, Death Metal, Electroclash, and any other genre that assaults all of our senses while you are mesmerized, undulating and stomping on the dancefloor. THE BAR The drinks are cheap. And PBR is even cheaper than cheap. [And great beer to gulp if all you're gonna do is dance it off in the next 10 minutes. THE LOWDOWN I wouldn't have this venue be any other way than it is!

Yelp
Y.O. Being for real I will probably not gonna ever go back (JUST NOT MY SYLE) However tho I'ma keep it 1000 with the world.. If you're looking for an experience that is.... How you say OUTRAGEOUS, SEXY AND VERY OUT OF THIS WORLD... the Lovecraft is def your place to be. Has a huge variety of people from Goths, Emos, Hipsters and all sorts of edgy folks here. They have a coffin you can take selfies in, personally I thought the D.J. was wack HOWEVER! If you love trance-techno mixed with ghoulish filthy beats with a melodic undertone then MAYBE THIS DJ IS ACTUALLY FUCKIN RAD! I had to realize even tho my friend brought me here to celebrate her birthday with co-workers all in all it was very poppin. Hopefully people can have fun here like we all did. For anyone scared by the hard exterior just know it is a safe place for every. You're gonna see a lot of different-strange people here but if you run into one they will probably surprise you by how kind and down to earth they are.

Yelp
I'm not sure what everyones talking about. Me and my girlfriend came to visit over the weekend and this was a must DO! We weren't disappointed, as we were a little nervous about the bad yelp reviews. But hell, the blonde bartender was super friendly and awesome, as was the front door man with the Wasp hoodie. The coffin was fun to lay in! Great bar atmosphere and wish we had one in San Jose! Wish we coulda stayed longer.

Yelp
I didn't go out for a long time and my friends took me to this bar yesterday. I was super excited and everything starts fun , we were dancing and drinking. Then suddenly after I was trying to order a drink and maned it wrong bartender decide not to service me and my friends and after few minutes we were kicked out for now reason!!! Absolute stupidity and definitely NO Understanding of customer service. And by the way when you order your drink make sure they pour ENOUGH alcohol, because with my experience they add less then half of the liquor they supposed to add, I know that from a previous bartender experience. And I also doubt for a quality of alcohol at this place.

Yelp
I was finally able to come here after the remodel. It's now even better with two dance floors = way more space to dance! I love all the new touches which just keep getting better every time I go there.
