Where to Eat Around Denver on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day | Eater Denver

"On Christmas Eve, this New American restaurant Inside Aurora’s Benson Hotel is hosting a Feast of the Seven Fishes to remember: Lobster bisque, scallop ceviche tart, and halibut in brown butter are just a few of the dishes on the six-course menu, which runs $115 per person plus $65 for optional wine pairings; note that reservations are required for either seating at 5 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. But that’s not all: The Common Good is also open for Christmas Day brunch (7 a.m.–11 a.m.) and dinner (12 p.m.–5 p.m.), when specials like surf and turf, duck à l’orange, and flourless chocolate cake are sure to bring good cheer." - Eater Staff

Really great restaurant in a beautiful hotel. Very reasonable prices for fabulous dishes. The potatoes/peppers/spinach hash & eggs and the classic eggs benedict with brown butter hollandaise sauce dishes were fantastic! Coffee was delicious. Service was outstanding. Conveniently located near the Denver airport. Great experience.

Went here for brunch - the food was delicious, and the pricing is agreeable. Looks just as good as it tastes. Has a selection of menu items labeled vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free, and all the ingredients are listed for the dishes. The portions are just right, I recommend ordering a separate side if you're a bigger eater. The restaurant was very clean and quiet, no loud music. For parking, you're right near a campus and the restaurant is connected to a hotel, so you'll need to do a few laps to find street parking if it's busy.

The Cruz Experience

Google
Sampling a new local brunch spot and this one popped up in my Google search. It's fairly easy to get to from I-25, and located inside of the Benson Hotel in Aurora. The parking situation is unideal as there is very little to zero available street parking. I used the lot across from the hotel which is $2.00 per hour. The atmosphere has cool vibes- lots of light, nice decor and overall good energy. The food was a little underwhelming; under seasoned omelette, the potatoes were a great concept but tasted a little oily. There was no salt or pepper on the table and no jelly, jam, honey or anything for the toast. All in all a little lackluster. The wait staff was friendly and personable, although we didn't see much of her to get a refill on coffee, another mimosa, etc. I was looking forward to a different experience, but it just didn't provide it.

Google
Great selection everything was amazing and cooked very well. The rosemary smashed potatoes were delicious very different. Thanks. Benedict was done very well. The atmosphere the silverware. The setting was all fantastic. The waiter however never came back and re-filled my coffee. Not even one time was a little disappointing especially since it was not busy. Parking in the area a little bit difficult. Of course you can opt to valet or if you’re staying at the hotel you have parking. They have a cute little outside area to sit. Also, it was a cold day so I would not have suggested it on a day like today. But it was warm inside I would go back.

Google
Coffee was great, it just took forever to find us as the service seemed extra slow this morning, a day after Memorial Day weekend. Paulie made up for it by bringing us coffee to go after we finished and was a delight to chat with. He brought us some outstanding strawberry jelly he told us not to tell anyone, but it was truely delightful. Parking was strange, and lacking, but fortunately it was a slow morning and we found a spot relitively close.

Google
I had the salmond Benedict and the Pistachio latte. Both were very delicious! The potato's had a perfect crispy skin while still soft on the inside. The waiter was incredibly friendly and personable. I would strongly recommend this place to anyone.

Google
A gastronomical experience! The adult beverages were fun and bold. The Quinoa bean salad was wholesome and tasty. The short rib for the entree was a definite crowd-pleaser-so I reluctantly shared it with my family.

Google
Very delicious and fresh food. The service was excellent and the food was VERY flavorful. Impressed by how delicious the food was. The pistachio latte is also a must!

Yelp
The Common Good deserves a perfect five stars. I think it's absolutely one of the best restaurants in the metro Denver area, and I've never tried a dish I didn't enjoy. My favorite meal at The Common Good is breakfast. The vanilla sweet cream pancakes are truly the best pancakes I've ever had: delicious but not excessively sweet, perfectly fluffy, and served with whipped butter, maple syrup, and berries. The omelets are sensational, along with the smashed rosemary potatoes, and even the toast -- everything is made of such fresh, high-quality ingredients. Prices are also surprisingly affordable. The service has been consistently good and attentive. When we had dinner here recently, our server included adorable miniature bottles of Heinz ketchup when she boxed up our leftover fries for us! (And this is the perfect opportunity to mention how exceptional the pistachio pesto parmesan fries are -- try them!) The ambiance is gorgeous and elegant, but I've never felt uncomfortable dining in jeans. It's also very peaceful, and rarely busy. The restaurant is located inside of the beautiful Benson Hotel, with free valet parking as well as a $2/hour paid lot located directly across the street. Whenever I host guests, The Common Good is always where I take them, and, to a one, everybody has loved it!

Yelp
Beet appetizer (pictured) was pretty good. The pickled cherries were really strong, but I was into it. Butternut squash soup was also good; maybe even better than the beets. Beef ragu (pictured) had great flavor, but the pasta shape was awkward to eat. It was in wide strips - halfway between regular noodles and a lasagna sheet. I think they should either be thinner, or cut into smaller segments. Flower spritz mocktail didn't really taste like anything. Just herbal water, or cold tea. Waiter was attentive, and ambience was elegant.

Yelp
In the Benson Hotel, this place holds up it's standard to elegant and polished. We were in the area and wanted lunch, so popped on in. A bit underdressed, but it's just a nice hotel on a medical campus so we didn't mind. It was a quiet afternoon (maybe too quiet) when we went, but I'm sure it's a happening place. We had the Flank steak sandwich and green grain bowl with shrimp. The sandwich was alright, nothing to write home or to anyone about. The bowl, the best thing was the shrimp. Everything was pretty bland and did not agree with the palette. I was trying to be healthy, but it came with a price - unfulfilling lunch. The dressing (goddess dressing) was almost like blended veggies with no taste, not even a bit salt. Like I said, the shrimp was the best part and made the salad a bit more palatable.

Yelp
I would say maybe a 4.5 but I know the hubs and I will be returning. We came here after a Google search while in aurora for an event with Yelp Elite and the original place we wanted to go to had a wait and no call ahead so we found here and glad we came. In a cute part of aurora and in a hotel. Our waiter (don't remember his name) but he was amazing and so friendly. He was helpful with our questions. I got the burger and fries (yes for brunch don't judge ha ha) and my husband got the steak and eggs. Plus, we split a pancake. My husband's steak was nice and tender and good flavor. We personally didn't like the hollandaise on the side but oh well. Oh and the fingerling potatoes were great. I liked my burger and the flavors paired well. Loved the fries. The surprising heavy favorite was the one pancake with berries and cream. My husband doesn't even like pancakes and he and I have always debated which is better: French toast or pancakes (clearly the answer is pancakes) and we fell in love. Light and fluffy but some hidden flavors (which is guarded by the chef...poop!)that made it pop. My husband literally wants to come back just for the pancake so it is that good! We personally liked the place and feel it's a great place to stop in for Brunch. Highly recommend.

Yelp
The Benson Hotel is a fantastic new hotel located in Aurora near the UC hospital. I love the stylish art deco design of the place. We visited The Common Good for a bite to eat, and we sat in the bar area. There was a fun, lively atmosphere there, with friendly, attentive service. My son really enjoyed his food, and they have a great menu for kids. Though there are fewer choices for those who are gluten free and vegan. I had a salad that was supposed to be substituted with avocado, but instead I received an upcharge. That was disappointing. I hope they offer more choices, because I'd definitely visit again if they did.

Yelp
Beautifully decorated with a great service staff. Top notch hollandaise with a kick of heat. Perfect smashed potatoes, bright with just the right amount of salt and rosemary. Denver omelet, the best I have had. Bourbon blueberry cream cheese never hurt anyone either. As a chef for a living I was stunned this was rated so low. Try it for yourself.

Yelp
We had brunch here yesterday. The restaurant is beautiful. Service was attentive and friendly. Best eggs Benedict I've ever had--with a brown butter hollandaise. Big cups of good coffee. Their brunch menu is excellent. I want to try more items!

Yelp
I'd like to thank The Common Good for feeding us, literally! We came to an even at the hotel a bit late and all thats left from the food spread is drink, lol. To our surprise, we received a coupon for a free appetizer up to a certain dollar amount at The Common Good and the staff was super nice to let us comp half off an entree instead (since we didn't find an app we desired and the value of it was almost half the price of an entree we were wanting) Service was super courteous even though they knew we were using a coupon and not ordering drinks (as we "filled up" from the event, lol) I think that says a lot about a restaurant! Our food came and I enjoyed every little bit of it. The scallops had a little twist to it thanks to the buffalo sauce and the lightly torched cauliflower. The burger is juicy and tender. Better than average pub burgers. Thank you for taking care of us!

Nicole C.

Yelp
We had a delightful meal for dinner after a long road trip. Btw, the hotel is awesome too. Anyway, we had Frankie for our waiter and he was very good. He made some excellent recommendations for us. We came back the next morning for a yummy breakfast. Paulie was our waiter. Other that being very chatty, he was fine. We can't wait to visit again.

Yelp
After attending a celebratory shindig at the Benson, we attendees were informed by the master of ceremony that we would get 25% discount on all beverages and food consumption at the bar and the restaurant afterwards. Hence, I stopped by the Common Good to try out their food: to take home with me. The lady at the reception was cordial and pleasant. Although the restaurant was getting close to its closing time, she happily took my order. When going through the menu, she didn't rush me; she let me take my time to pick what I wanted. I went with the risotto and a side salmon on top it. After the 25% discount, the tab was $26.85. Not bad! While waiting, I stepped inside the restaurant to take some photos. It's not big and yet it was a decent side. I was able to see the kitchen standing in the center of the dining area. Not overly decorated but nice clean feel throughout. My food was up in a matter of 10 minutes. There were only a few tables sat by diners so they appeared to have been able to prepare my food in a decent time. At home, I took a few bites of the food (I mostly saved it for tomorrow.) The actual name of the risotto is squash risotto. I did see some pieces of squash. The portion is/was generous but it failed to entertain my palate; it was as if they barely put any seasoning in it. "Bland" is the best way to describe the dish. The salmon however, was decent. A hint of salt is what I tasted mostly so again, it wasn't overly seasoned but it was nice and moist. Well, overall, the experience wasn't bad. At least the service was good. The food? Based on what I got, it was mediocre at best.

Yelp
My server was amazing. The restaurant was surprisingly quiet on a late Saturday morning with no wait. Most places around you need a reservation or to join the waitlist 2 hours before you get there. The food was so yummy. I ordered the Seasons Bounty Hash with a pancake on the side.

Yelp
Quite a surprise to find this lovely restaurant in such a beautifully appointed hotel near to the hospital. It has the feeling of a boutique 5-star location in New York City - yet it has a down-to-earth and welcoming ambiance. Excellent, perfectly crafted food, lovely people, and rarely crowded. The folks at the front hostess station could use some warmth and training, but the rest of the experience is excellent.

Michael Wear

Yelp
The Benedict was quite good, although the hollandaise sauce is a little different than usual, but I liked it. The eggs were perfectly cooked. The smoked salmon frittata was pretty good. The arugula on top went great with it. Very friendly service.

Yelp
We were looking for breakfast out not too far away. The common good is inside the Benson hotel and faculty club. The interior is bright clean lines and cute simple decor. On arrival, there is a choice if you want valet parking, this is free for two hours with validated parking stub, or a park by the hour surface lot, or just a few retail "spot" for parking free for two hours or less. This seems to me this is the gotcha here and might sway me to consider other restaurants rather than fuss with parking. Service was okay, strangely coffee service involved taking our cups to back to get filled, we went through cream on first cups, and on second cups had to ask for additional coffee and cream, our server disappeared with the creamer pitcher and did not return for 5-7 minutes! After about 5 we asked another service person and she proceeded to get us milk? Then a couple minutes later our server came with cream, but then said he had to "go upstairs to fill it or get more" letting us know would have helped us not wonder what was happening with our request. Overall the meal and food service was hot and tasty. My husband had a burrito and I had Cajun shrimp and grits. Both were beautifully presented and piping hot. My dish was super tasty and grits were creamy and delicious, sausage and shrimp were both done well. My husband said the green chili was good but might have needed a little more kick, interior of the burrito was bland but hot temperature wise and plentiful. I would certainly recommend if staying at the hotel thus restaurant for a hearty breakfast. Not certain I would go out of my way for it as a local with paid parking or valet (tipped-even though I parked myself)

Yelp
I had already tried a ton of their appetizers, so we decided to sit down for more. The atmosphere is relaxed and the seating surrounds the bar. The bartender was really friendly and was responsive with her service. We got the chicken pate which came with bread, pickles, and mustard. We tried them in different combinations and found it best to eat everything together. The pate wasn't bad, but I enjoyed the food we had beforehand much better. My wife also got some spiced apple compote drink that she thought was awesome.

Yelp
I want to start with a disclaimer that I did not tried the food. I sat at the bar while waiting for a friend and ordered two espresso martinis. The service was okay at first when the there was a guy bartender there. Then another bartender came in and she was super friendly and her espresso martinis were great! It was very well priced and I enjoyed the drinks. I definitely want to stop by and try the food next time I'm in the area. The vibe is upscale without being pretentious since it caters to hotel guests too. Definitely a cool spot to check out!
google avatar

Bob B.

Yelp
The wife had linguine and clams and were very good. Linguine noodles were a bit on thick side but pleanty of clams. I had the fried chicken which also very good. The fried chicken very over priced at I believed at $26 for one piece of chicken. Tomato bisque very bland it was more tomato sauce. No cream, sherry or basil in the bisque. The two main dishes were very good. Service was fine. Also had lime cheesecake which was good.

Yelp
Stopped at The Common Good for a couple drinks and apps and was disappointed. We sat at the bar and it took a very long time to even be addressed. Once we finally ordered food, it took a good 40 minutes to come out and was average at best. One of the bartenders was friendly but the other acted like she wanted nothing to do with anyone. Would not recommend.
google avatar

Marianne Navarro ..

Yelp
Highly recommend if you in this area. The service was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. It was hard to decide what to order because the whole menu looked good. We ordered the Bountiful Hash, Yogurt Parfait and sides of pancakes and were very happy with our orders. The decor and ambiance were very fresh and cool and the location is part of a larger new development in the hospital area.
google avatar

Yelp
We went to the Benson hotel for an event and needed dinner so we decided to eat here. It's a nice restaurant with a good menu. I ordered the pistachio pesto noodles with chicken and the noodles were fresh and well made, good thickness and length, the chicken was moist and tasty but I gotta admit the pistachio pesto sauce was kinda bland. My friend ordered the bolognese and let me try it, now that dish was tasty! Prices were ok. I was gonna actually just give 3 stars but our waiter Tamba was phenomenal! Very friendly and personable and attentive refilling our waters and drinks.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
From the bar staff, to the ambience by the fire place to the amazing food creations this was a treat! We grabbed the Benson burger and fries, with the Jamaican jerk wings. The burger was amazing and something my wife can't wait to recreate at home! Then the wings...someone in that kitchen has figured out how to cook wings and keep them incredibly juicy and delicious. Outstanding. Our bartender came by to chat and found out he was from Chicago and simply a nice guy. Made our night.

Malic I.

Yelp
Stayed at the beautiful Benson and given the restaurant sits inside the hotel we decided to have breakfast here. All the food we ordered was delicious! Avocado toast was savory but since it didn't come with neither eggs or a protein I ordered a side of bacon with it. The buttermilk pancakes were cooked to perfection & topped with fruit. The real star of the show was the Eggs Benny with rosemary smashed potatoes! These were the best potatoes I have had & quickly devoured them all. Only small issue was service after food was received no one came to check in so I had to flag down the waiter for additional needs.
google avatar

Brittany G.

Yelp
I never write yelp reviews but this place is so deserving of more than 3 stars. Everything we had was absolutely delicious - highly recommend!

Yelp
We stopped into The Common Goods bar area while at the Benson hotel for the Yelpies. We used our discount card to share some mussels while we waited for the award ceremony to begin. The mussels were surprisingly fresh (you never know with CO being a landlocked state); the broth was my fav! The bar is dark and moody with the blue/green wall color. Only wish the lighting was a bit darker to really set that speakeasy style mood! The bartenders were pleasant and attentive even though they got quite busy while we were there.
google avatar

Aurora D.

Yelp
Lovely ambience in a very nice hotel. I was in for breakfast on a weekday. Everyone was nice, but they're clearly short staffed. Our waiter was also the hostess, busser, barista, etc. This made service a little slow, although not the worst I've experienced. Food was middling. I had the eggs Benedict which I enjoyed, but the poached eggs had well done yolks--always a disappointment. The potatoes on the side were actually the star of the show; great flavor and beautifully crispy. My companion had chilaquiles, but while the flavor was good, the chips were really soggy. She didn't finish it. Lattes were small compared to the enormous cups they were served in and the chai didn't have any sugar added. At this price point I expect more.

Yelp
Came here for a pretty awesome event, the hotel was beautiful. My friend and I decided to stop by and use a coupon we were given. We self-seated at the bar. We waited about five minutes (it wasn't that busy), I asked Thom (one of the bartenders) for a menu. He said, "Sure." However, we never received our menus. He went about chatting with another customer, and made a chocolate espresso cocktail. There was a moment where he was just standing there...still no menu. I overheard the other bartender tell the same event attenders that the kitchen was closing in five minutes. I became pretty anxious and hangry. I tried getting their attentions, my attempts still failed. The lady got the three others' order in. Then saw that my friend and I had been sitting there without any drinks or menus (12 minutes later), and came over to ask if we had been helped. I told her, we would like to order some food, and had been waiting on a menu. She then tells me, that the kitchen is closed. Maybe one day, I'll get to try the food. But, with that service, I think I'll have to hold off.

Jay L.

Yelp
First off, this has nothing to do with the hotel. The hotel staff were amazing! The food, well I wouldn't know because we never received ours. Granted, we did get to the bar at 8:42p and kindly asked if we could still order food. We work insanhours and had been back and forth from the hospital all day. We were told it was last call for food, which we quickly ordered. The man across from us got his salad and food and the bartender didn't go check on our food until 9:30p. We were told the manager was coming to talk to us, no one came and we left at 9:45p. Fast forward to Thursday night. We walked to the bar to get a nightcap and were greated by the bartender say it was last call, with a full bar. Honestly the client is quite pretentious. I would steer clear.

Yelp
Some may be turned away by the shorter more limited menu, but the less options, the higher quality of the courses! Tucked away in an upscale hotel, the common good delivered on so many levels! There is a bar before you walk into the common good, the bar reminded me of the castle on the Traitors! That made a statement, but walking into the common good was a but underwhelming after that. It was bright and airy, but almost too bright. However, food menu, service, and taste of food greatly made up for that. My party had a bottle of wine, Brussels sprouts, and the chicken gnudi pasta and vodka rigatoni. Everything was fresh and flavorful. There was some zest on the Brussels sprouts which made them the best sprouts I have ever tasted! You could tell the pastas were home made and also were amazing flavor. Whthe portion of the pasta was just slightly bigger, but overall they were well priced. Our server, Ben I believe, was top of line! He poured every ounce of our wine and was very attentive!! I will be back!

Yelp
We had a group of seven in town for a conference and this restaurant was recommended by Yelp. We all agreed that it was a great meal and nice environment to relax after a long day. The hush puppies were delicious!!
google avatar

Stephan C.

Yelp
Food was magnificent! The staff was fantastic and it being a hotel restaurant it was surprisingly good.
google avatar

Melissa B.

Yelp
Food is mediocre. Our waitress for breakfast needs an attitude adjustment. Not friendly at all. Maybe she was having a bad day. The rigatoni was terrible. Over sauced and no guanciale that I could see or taste. My husband's burger and French fries were good. It's a good thing that he likes to share. Lol.

Rivvy N.

Yelp
We had a lovely dinner and nice breakfast at The Common Good, while staying at the hotel it's connected to, The Benson. Our dinner was interesting, delicious and reasonable. My vodka was a little expensive, but it was a very generous amount! And the hostess and waitress were both delightful and made us feel very welcome. This relatively new restaurant is cozy, intimate and beautifully designed. Give it a try!

Julie H.

Yelp
Beautiful ambience. Passable food. ABYSMAL SERVICE. First clue was empty tables. Many. The five that were occupied were largely ignored by wait staff. Took 40+ minutes for A SINGLE GLASS OF WINE TO ARRIVE. Absolutely unacceptable. They need to watch Top Chef or one of the other hundreds of restaurant shows in which patrons should only have to wait 5 minutes maximum for a drink order to be delivered. For the price of the ticket, we deserved better service. Figure it out, The Common Good!!!

F P.

Yelp
Best oat latte coffee ever! Happy service. Great product. Set us up for our road trip. Thanks!

Morris T.

Yelp
We were looking for a good place for lunch in the Anschutz area of Aurora. The Common Good appeared to have high reviews, so we gave it a try. We were there Saturday around noon. The restaurant looked comfortable, and the tables were well spaced, however the floor was dirty. The experience declined rapidly from there. The server seemed distracted and forgot things we asked for after the food was served. We were all looking forward to the lunch menu, as we had previewed it online. The website stated it was available from 11-3 daily. Well, we were told lunch was not available, so we had to order from the Brunch Menu. We Ordered 4 different menu Items. They were all bland and tasteless, and the food was barely warm. The fries were outstanding though. So, one bright spot in an otherwise very disappointing experience for everyone. All for a premium price.
google avatar

Asheya M.

Yelp
I think they opened too early. They made a brochure for brunch on Saturday and Sunday. (Bottomless Mimosas and pancakes with the purchase of an entre.) Went to bed hungry because I was so excited. We went on Saturday, they told us the menu was limited due to unforeseen circumstances. That's cool. We ordered and received everything we wanted. Went to go back Sunday, and it was closed. All the workers were just sitting around laughing and joking. Trying to give this place a chance. It is also super fancy for a little college town. Waiting patiently for the place to open up fully so I can come back and leave another review.

Candle L.

Yelp
Came here food was cold and horrible asked for manager and spoke to caitlin she told me "if i dont like it you can leave" instead of trying to better the experience maybe remake the meal so its not cold ANYTHING. Horrible experience.

Rachel A.

Yelp
Best service we have ever had by Kaitlyn. Food is fresh and delicious but most importantly served with a smile.

Samantha B.

Yelp
Amazing Food, Staff is like a little family and all worked well together!! Definitely worth stopping in and visiting for Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner!

Duemece A.

Yelp
we could hardly wait for this place to open. The Common Good did not disappoint, the staff is amazing and the food is phenomenal. We tried breakfast and dinner, and both meals were well worth the wait. We cannot wait to go back.

Alex C.

Yelp
Food options are...diverse to say the least (ie deviled eggs, pesto parm fries-eek). The restaurant is empty just like most establishments opened in this community. We tried to order pancakes and they said they didn't have all the ingredients. That's fine. Then we tried to order mimosas, they didn't have orange juice, but offered beet juice instead. What on earth? Very nice ambiance, but that doesn't fill your stomach. There is also nowhere to park, which is super confusing being on the ground floor of a hotel. What hotel doesn't have a parking lot? If I were you, I'd save my time, appetite, and money to go somewhere else.
