My husband and I like to try new-to-us foods when we travel. We stumbled upon The Conch Shack during a recent short trip to Key West, and had to try their conch fritters. Widely consumed in the Bahamas and southern Florida, minced conch (shellfish) are traditionally mixed into a seasoned batter made of cornmeal, chopped vegetables (onions, bell peppers, celery, jalapeño peppers), lemon juice, tomato paste, and seasonings (creole seasoning, black pepper). After being formed into bite-sized balls and deep-fried, the fritters are served with a dipping sauce. In the case of this restaurant, it's a tangy key lime aioli dipping sauce.
We ordered a 6-piece order "snack" to share ($10, Feb 2024) from the walk-up counter. Staff we're friendly, and the fritters were served hot from the oil and the accompanying beer was cold. The fritters and dipping sauce were both tasty. We ate this at the small outdoor long table, while listening to the sounds (no visuals) of live music from a neighboring establishment. The table is tucked into a side alley; it's not on the main road. A stray rooster wandered nearby. There are no restrooms; indoor seating is not available).
