Joanne Fluke’s Books Are the Pastry-Themed Murder Mysteries You Need | Eater

"A cozy small-town bakery and coffee shop run by Hannah Swensen that serves as the communal hub of the series, where locals gather and gossip while baked goods take center stage. Nearly every installment includes multiple recipes—from molasses crackles and cream puffs with vanilla custard to fruit pastries and even Ruby’s Deep-Fried Candy Bars—and character-specific recipe notes (for example, Lisa experimenting with pineapple jam because Herb favors pineapple) that deepen the fictional world. The food is the emotional core of the stories, presented with homespun, food-centric similes and lighthearted puns; the tone is non-gory and comforting, and the bakery’s quirks (including Hannah’s giant orange cat, Moishe) reinforce the series’ cozy, escapist appeal. Many recipes are drawn from the author’s own experiments, family cookbooks, and fans, and they have a strong digital presence on literary food blogs and Pinterest." - Brittany Ross

I’m from Newport and been going to the Cookie Jar for a bag of cookies for decades now so after a long absence of returning home I had to bring my wife and kids to the Cookie Jar because well it’s a Newport thing!! It didn’t disappoint and the oatmeal butterscotch are still my favorite but all are good and taste the same as they always have, I just can’t eat a whole bag like I used to. I was glad it was still there!! I didn’t take any pics of the cookies we ate them too fast!!

Google
A must-stop in Newport! The Cookie Jar is a charming little bakery nestled right on Bowen's Wharf. The aroma of freshly baked cookies draws you in, and the delightful selection keeps you coming back. I tried the chocolate chip and snickerdoodle—both were soft, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. The staff was friendly and welcoming, adding to the cozy atmosphere. The Cookie Jar is a sweet treat you don't want to miss! Want more Newport recommendations? Follow me on Instagram & TikTok @katieandrewstravel

All the cookies looked over cooked so we got a shortbread to try. Basically, no flavor at all.

Vivian Craft

Google
Not sure about the texture of the cookies....the cookies are very light weighted too. We got the peanut butter ones and can't really taste the peanut butter. Definitely not worth it for how much they charge for them for 😅

Rylee Morrison

Google
Definitely bait and switch. The quality and flavor of the cookies is somehow well below average despite the store being solely devoted to cookies. It felt like they were missing 5 key ingredients. Small and hard. Nothing wrong with the staff though. They were nice.

Google
Stale, day old cookies at 10:30 in the morning . 3 for $7.50. Really make the effort. Peanut Butter cookies have no taste!

Been going here since I was 6. Young girl working the countertop, I asked her to heat a few of my dozen cookies. She replied as if I was mentally ill with her tone saying “uhhh - no” and then laughed at me. Yikes. Don’t have a store if you can’t have a remote sense of kindness in customer service.

A Berge

Google
Bought a dozen yesterday for $25, which I thought was a little high to begin with. Cookies were hard as a rock and small, almost like they were stale? These are 100% not homemade either, definitely frozen and baked. Not worth it!

Yelp
I'm quite the cookie monster. I can't help it. Cookies are one of my weaknesses. I was craving something sweet and decided to check out this bakery in Bowen's Wharf. As soon as I walked in, I could smell the aroma of freshly baked goods. I thought this was a good sign that I was about to eat some damn good cookies. They only have classic flavors like chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, peanut butter, snickerdoodle, etc. I expected more variety, but oh well. I bought three for $7.50. They weren't bad, but they weren't anything special either. For the price, they were tiny and thin! They could have been a lot softer and chewier. I expected more from a place that advertises their main product in their business name. Look at Chip City, Insomnia Cookies, and Crumbl. Honestly? I've had better from the bakery sections at ShopRite and Costco. Other than cookies, they sell a few other pastries like brownies, muffins, and cinnamon buns. They also serve breakfast sandwiches until noon. There's a self-service coffee station to the side. I'm being a bit generous with 3 stars. I don't recommend this place unless you want to pay for overpriced, mediocre cookies.

Yelp
Nice little cookie place in town. Amd they have a few things other then cookies. But the cookies are really good. Butter scotch is my go to.

Yelp
My husband found this spot and said, "Let's check it out." We walked inside and smelled the aroma of the cookies. It smelt like heaven. We absolutely loved it. Prior to getting the cookies, we asked the women at the counter, which was her favorite she explained which ones were the top sellers and which one was her favorite. I liked how helpful she was. We decided to get 6 different cookies. We got the chocolate chip , oatmeal , snicker doodle, and a couple of others. As soon as we stepped outside, we decided to try one of each, and I absolutely loved the way they all tasted very soft , chewy, and delicious. The prices of the cookies were set at a great price. I would highly recommend giving this spot a chance. They cookies are all very delicious!

Yelp
Small small cookie and breakfast stop in Newport. The shop smells AMAZING. Breakfast sandwich was great and cookies were even BETTER. Super fast and staff was great! Nowhere to sit, but they do have tables right outside. Great stop when shopping around Newport.

Yelp
This place has been around for years. It's nice little place in the center of the town to get a cookie. The cookies are not fancy but very good. They're different choices and it smells like my grandmother cookies. The prices are are not terrible. It's what you would expect for downtown Newport on the wharf. The kids working are always cheerful and greet you with a smile.

Yelp
The Cookie Jar has been a huge staple in Newport for foreverrrrrr. It's a cute, small, cookie shop. I noticed the cookies have gotten a lot smaller over the years and price point is high. If you had the cookies before, it can be disappointing today. They do have a good variety of flavors to choose from: chocolate chip, ginger snap, snicker doodle, m&m, sugar cookie, peanut butter. They also have brownies and macaroons. The service is always quick. It is located in a busy location with lots of foot traffic and tourists. They have bottled beverages and self serve coffee. For a quick sit down, there are a few small tables and chairs right outside.

Yelp
I stopped In a childhood favorite spot growing up as a kid. It's very tiny inside, as soon as you walk in you can smell the fresh baked cookie smell in the shop. They have self serve coffee and bottled soda and juices for drinks. The cookie jar has been serving different variety of homemade cookies ranging from classic chocolate chip to brownies for many years in downtown Newport for many years. The service is friendly and happy to serve their customers but the cookies are not how I remember them from years ago. Flat, thin, and plan for being a fresh baked cookie. Not the worst but not the best. I really like their brownies and cinnamon buns over the cookies.

Melissa M.

Yelp
Don't waste your money & don't let the enticing smell fool you. The cookies were terrible, thin & hard. You're better off buying a big bag of tates for the price or baking your own store bought cookies. Or just walk across the street to Kilwins for yummy ice cream or fudge!
google avatar

Yelp
Just grabbed a croissant, but it was GOOD. They were so nice, and the cinnamon rolls smelled amaaazing, so I can't wait to come back. Cute spot in Newport!

Yelp
While walking, we decided to get 3 cookies for $7.50, so we ended up getting an oatmeal butterscotch, chocolate chip and a snickerdoodle. Cookies aren't anything special and are pretty much like you'd get from a supermarket bakery and those are probably better and a much better price. The oatmeal butterscotch cookie was hard, the chocolate chip didn't blow you away and the snickerdoodle was eh. The best thing we got there was a bottle of Del's tangerine orange. Spend less and get better cookies at a local supermarket. Another tourist trap in our eyes.
google avatar

Haley G.

Yelp
I saw some less than stellar reviews, but we were sort of in a hurry and wanted something sweet. I should have heeded the warning! I specifically asked if the cookies were soft and was told they were. That was not true! None of the three of us finished either of our cookie because it just wasn't worth it.
google avatar

Emily T.

Yelp
Cookies are good but not great. They are pretty tiny for the price too. The gingersnap was my personal favorite.
google avatar

Steve Y.

Yelp
Friendly greeting and nice smile. Three Cortes for $6.50. Got shortbread, peanut butter and oatmeal. Delish.
google avatar

Yelp
So many ice cream places in this area...but I felt like something baked. Then we walked by this little shop and were drawn to the name and the sweet buttery smell of fresh baked cookies. I got 3 cookies for $6 and change: snickerdoodle, chocolate chip, and ginger snap. They were not big, but they were packed with flavor and super soft and chewy. You could tell they were freshly made. The cookies remained fresh in the bag for 3 days. I ate one on the 3rd day and it was still soft and chewy. Something else that I noticed was that they were rich, but not overly buttery. The bag had no grease stains! The young lady that took my order was okay, but adding a smile or a pinch or friendliness would've earned the store 5 stars!
google avatar

Jennifer D.

Yelp
The service was friendly, but the food was lacking. Their signature items..cookies...were just okay. Not worth the price tag. Filled croissants were burned at the edges. Sandwiches a bit dry. There were better options in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Stephanie T.

Yelp
If you have a sweet tooth and are in search for somewhere totally dedicated to the cookie- look no further. I recently visited this delightful place and let me tell you, their cookies are nothing short of yum! During my last visit, I indulged in a selection of their delectable offerings, and I couldn't resist trying the Ginger Snap, Peanut Butter, Snickerdoodle, and classic Chocolate Chip cookies. My favorite had to be the Ginger Snap, so soft and chewy. While the prices might lean towards the higher side, don't let that deter you. The more cookies you buy, the cheaper they get.
google avatar

Cindy E.

Yelp
The peanut butter was pretty good. The two others were just average. Expected better cookies for $2.25 each

Jules W.

Yelp
Visited recently, very little to choose from. The cookie tasted like the ones from the grocery stores, hot chocolate was awful. The person working was rude, I wouldn't recommend this place.
google avatar

Holly K.

Yelp
Nothing special about these cookies. I stopped in on Sunday night to buy a chocolate chip cookie, and asked if they could please warm it up. The staff proceeded to tell me no, they aren't able to heat them up. I asked if they had a microwave or oven- they said they have both but could not (and would not) heat up my cookie. They stated 1. They had no way to do so, 2. It didn't need warmed as it was made that same day, and 3. If I wanted to order a cinnamon roll right next to it, they would heat that up in the microwave for me. Absolutely baffling (and quite illogical) responses. Cookie was hard as a rock, and had no flavor. Don't be fooled by the delicious smell of the store- save your money (and appetite) and skip over this place altogether.

Yelp
Just got back from out bus tour and needed some coffee. Found this quaint little place at Bowden's Wharf. Coffee was very good and hot plenty of extras to add to the coffee. Plenty of extras to have with it. Bagels, bagel sandwiches cookies and other treats. Nice little place to sit out side and enjoy your coffee and treats. Keep up the great work.
google avatar

Angela B.

Yelp
Plenty of assorted flavors to choose from. Cookies were soft and fresh. I usually do not like Gingerbread cookies and they were my favorite! Not too strong or gingery. The butterscotch were a close second. They also have Del's lemonade, which is a plus.

Maria F.

Yelp
Found a sharp plastic chard in my pistachio muffin. Told Maggie behind the counter and she said " Thanks, I'll let my manager know, have a nice day." Didn't ask if I was ok. It's a shame but won't eat here again.

Yelp
All hail the Cookie Jar, Newport's answer to the question "Where do I go when I'm on vacay and need to satisfy that baked good craving?" This lil' spot is tucked right off a bustling tourist drag, Bannister's Wharf, and home to a multitude of delish cookies, baked fresh every day! Take your pick from the impressive selection, which includes everything from a classic chocolate chip to an adventurous "Brookie" (the wondrous hybrid of brownie and cookie!), but no matter your selection, you'll be channeling your inner Cookie Monster - no one can stop at just one! At risk of sounding like a total grandma, my fave cookie is the Oatmeal Raisin, which is crisp yet chewy, and dotted with an ample amount of raisins. It's not for everyone, but don't turn your nose up at the usually less than remarkable reputation this flavor gets - it's really quite good. Wash your cookies down with your choice of tons of drinks! They have milk (duh), but also more creative offerings, like locally made Granny Squibb iced teas and Spindrift seltzers. I personally also highly recommend the bottled Del's Lemonade! It's a great companion to the Sugar Cookie! Yum! The young and energetic staff is usually on point, and it's fun to watch them scoop batches of fresh dough onto cookie sheets while you wait in line. Be forewarned - there is a $5 credit card minimum, so bring cash or prepare to buy multiple cookies. However, with treats this good, that should be easy!

Keith L.

Yelp
Historically for years I would have given the Cookie Jar 5 stars. However, a few things happened right before COVID... 1. They reduced the size of their cookies and macaroons, which 2. Makes them burnt and hard (no longer soft and chewy, and 3. They increased the price. Trifecta of negativity. So my family's favorite cookie/dessert place in Newport is now a place we go only because it's convenient. But sadly, I think our days going there are pretty much done. In the end. If they get back to their old ways, increase the size (and price frankly...better and more expensive is much more worth it, what the heck, it's a vacation dessert!), I would come back with open arms. Please go back to your olds ways of chewy big goodness. Until then, hard pass.

Yelp
Great little cookie spot and the owner was so nice! If your near stop by and get some Delicious Cookies!!!

Yelp
We stopped in here after going on the Rum Runner II cruise in Newport. It was very small and nothing fancy, however, the employees were really nice and the pastries we purchased were good. They have a couple of tables right outside were we sat to eat. I think this is a good little grab-and-go location. Perfect for a bottle of water or a quick snack with a convenient location near the other shops.

Yelp
We stumbled on this cookie shop on our way to Mooring's for dinner. It is located in the busy area of the marina near a bunch of different restaurants and shops. It is a small place with a few a different cookie flavors and some other options. They had oatmeal butterscotch, oatmeal, chocolate chip, m&m, and peanut butter to name a few. They also had coconut macaroons as well. We pretty much tried every one of them. One thing I noticed is these cookies aren't the cheapest. I believe it was $20 for 12 cookies. Not cheap but figured they may be worth the price. As for the taste, they weren't bad. These aren't cookies that you will run home and tell your family about but they are solid. My favorite was the peanut butter one. It was the softest and had good peanut butter flavor. The macaroons were also very good and tasted fresh. The other cookies were a mixed bag (no pun intended). Some tasted more fresh than others but nothing jumped out at me. The chocolate chip was just ok and that should be the gold standard. It is a cool shop but for the price I am not sure it is a must try in town. Nevertheless, it is good to support small businesses so give it a shot.

Yelp
Best damn cookies in Rhode Island. They are ALL good. We've been twice in 3 days...basically when our dozen runs out, we get more. Chewy, not overly sweet, so good!
google avatar

Linda C.

Yelp
Little cookie shop where we often stop on our walk for a few. Usually get chocolate chip, peanut butter and m and m. They are smaller than they used to be, but still very tasty. Chewy, just the way I like them!
google avatar

Alice K.

Yelp
Hidden gem. Walked in and bought macaroons, and peanut butter and snicker doodle cookies. So good! Whenever we pass by, we get a few cookies. From the outside can't tell it's an amazing cookie jar. Pleasant surprise that cookies are so good. Been back a few times already since discovering this place.

Yelp
Was walking downtown Newport during a rainy 4th of July weekend and stopped in for a quick snack since it smelled so great outside. We ordered a chocolate chip, oatmeal butterscotch, and sugar. Even though they were baking them fresh on site and they had constant traffic, the cookies we were served were dry and hard and room temperature - not fresh baked at all. They weren't necessarily bad, but really tasted like a home baked cookie and not special at all.
google avatar

Milo C.

Yelp
Although the cookies were pretty average, I have to give them 5 stars for having such a friendly staff working and a nice selection. They definitely reminded me of homemade cookies. I got three different ones, and they were all nice and crisp.
google avatar

Kristen S.

Yelp
I love the cookies here. My faves are the snickerdoodles and oatmeal butterscotch. The smell lured you in- you can't walk by with out getting at least one.
google avatar

R- D.

Yelp
The cookies were just Ok. I thought paying $17 for 9 small (1-1/2 to 2 inch diameter) cookies would some how make them incredible but they were just Ok. We we're drawn in by the smell of cinnamon. The girl at the counter said it was the snickerdoodle cookies and not the cinnamon buns. I'm not a huge fan of snickerdoodles but they were good - a little chewy when I prefer crisp. We purchased the chocolate chip, snickerdoodle, peanut butter and M&M. None of them were great but the snickerdoodle was good even for a cookie I wouldn't normally purchase. Overpriced for just an Ok cookie.
google avatar

Ed M.

Yelp
I would say cookie jar is one of Newport's best kept secrets but it's really not a secret at all! Right in the middle of banisters warf, this is the best dessert spot to go to in Newport if you're looking for something quick and easy. The place itself smells amazing, and the cookies taste even better than they smell!! It's very clean inside and the girls working behind the counter are very nice and accommodating. Check out the cookie jar when you're vacationing here!
google avatar

Jake K.

Yelp
No doubt it's highly trafficked given it's central location, but very very very mediocre cookies. DEFINITELY A TOURIST TRAP. With a name like "cookie jar" you'd think they would be baking some killer cookies. That, they are not. I'd compare them to store-bought pre-packaged cookies you'd find at a place like Stop & Shop...and the store bought ones are better. Cookies lacked flavor and didn't taste all that fresh. Certainly not worth the $2+ they charge per cookie.
google avatar

zay w.

Yelp
Trust me when I say you can get better cookies literally anywhere else, when you walk in everything seems j fine. The sights and smells make you think this place is gonna be heaven on earth, but that's not the case. The cookie was so bad I couldn't even finish it. No sugar, tasted like there was no butter in the batter either. Will never be back. It was actually so bad it hurt my feelings no joke.
google avatar

Joe C.

Yelp
3 cookies for $5. Is that price high? Beat's me. The cookies aren't particular large. I like cookie shops because they're less trendy than cupcake shops or fro-yo shops. (I hate trendy stuff). Just look at Mrs Fields shops. They've been around for many years. Out the three cookies I purchased, the gingerbread cookies were the bestest!
google avatar

Victoria T.

Yelp
Cute little cookie store on the wharf. Smelled great from far away! Got 3 cookies for $5.75 (I think, it was little over $5 for sure). Got chocolate chip, oatmeal butterscotch, and m&m. The oatmeal and chocolate chip ones were okay! M&m was not great. Pretty expensive for a not great cookie. It wasn't warm, and didn't melt in your mouth or anything, and it wasnt super big. I liked insomnia cookies better. But service was great, the young lady at the front was super super nice.

Lane C.

Yelp
It smelled wonderful from a short distance away but we were a little disappointed in their cookies. We had 3 different kinds but they were all mediocre at best, very small and a little pricey. They must only survive there because of all the tourists in that area who are drawn in by the wonderful aroma and the cute name.I think if they were a little larger "just a little" I wouldn't have been so inclined to right a negative review.
google avatar

Christina R.

Yelp
The smell of this place alone will have you inside. Ended up coming here every night we were on vacation always leaving with more cookies than planned. Snickerdoodle, M&M and Classic Chocolate Chip were heavenly. We timed it right multiple times and were able to score fresh out of the oven batches- the best way to do it!
google avatar

Rosine G.

Yelp
Don't be tricked by the delicious scent! If I was rating the cookie, I would give it a 1. But the staff and service was wonderful! So average, 3. Personal preference- I don't like well done cookies. Middle wasn't too bad, but the edges were not for me. The flavor was also a disappointment. Ugh I love cookies and was totally disappointed. I was here a few years back and remember it tasting different.
google avatar

Ashley G.

Yelp
When walking up you can smell this beautiful aroma. The weird thing for me is none of the cookies were warmed and they don't warm them up for you. it's just me to me to have brick hard snickerdoodles is all I'm saying
google avatar

Polly Y.

Yelp
Very very average. It was late at night and I was craving cookies, but it's pretty terrible. Got the peanut butter cookies and some other flavors, but they were all very average, dry, and kind of stale. Would not recommend. Might as well just go to the nearest supermarket.

Tabatha M.

Yelp
Really awful cookies. Rock hard, no flavor, they taste 3 days old. They were also out of nearly ever flavor including chocolate chip and said there wouldn't be more until the next day (when they didn't close for another 6+ hours??). Go somewhere else for better cookies !
google avatar

Cait M.

Yelp
Usually consistent spot for cookies. I was so excited to get a breakfast sandwich here and do some light shopping this am and asked the staff what time they opened yesterday when we bought some cookies. They said 9am. We showed up at 9:45am and the doors were locked with no note. We had to find somewhere else to eat on short notice. THEN I went back later on to get one of their croissants and I was 2nd in line and multiple guests walked in after me. The worker proceeded to take someone's order behind me (that they must know since they said hello and asked if he would have his usual). Okay, 1st snub... fine. He orders and moves to the side, I start to recite my order and this family next to me starts ordering and she glazes over me and takes their order. I walked out. 2 times passed over from the same place when there are basically hundreds to eat, I guess they don't need any business. Other options on Thames where you aren't treated poorly.
google avatar

Kristie L.

Yelp
Sorry but have to give this place 1 star. This is the epitome of a tourist trap. I am a cookie expert especially choc chip, ans unfortunately the figure to prove it LOL. Do not waste your money. 6 average sized cookies for $9.75 Let me tell you I don't mind paying that as long as it's a good cookie. It was average to below average. I've had frozen cookie dough that has made a better cookie. Not fresh tasting. Soft, but not fresh. I read the poor reviews but had to try for myself. The service sucked also. Just not friendly or helpful at all. I would not go back not would I waste calories on these cookies. Warning you, don't bother but if you insist to try for yourself go ahead, but don't say I didn't warn you. Waste of $$

Yelp
Came across this cookie store and the smell brought me right in. Smells like the perfect cookie. We got the oatmeal choc chip, choc chip and snickerdoodle. I also got a brownie, because you know, just to try. Oatmeal choc chip was my favorite. All of the cookies were very soft and chewy. The brownie was just ok.
