Google
Food truck hide away in a small parking lot. Love the energy and friendly service. Price seems reasonable. Wait was about 15 mins from ordering to receiving the food. We ordered beer battered halibut and southern style red snapper to go.The halibut was delicious, fries were spot on. Not sure if the tartar sauce was homemade or not, but it’s very good. The two stars off is cuz the red snapper was so stinky and didn’t seem fresh, which was a let down. It was disappointing from a food truck specializing in seafood. It definitely needs better quality control. I’d probably still go back at some point to try other options, but with current stats in hand, it’s a gamble.

This place is absolutely delicious! I cannot recommend it enough! Excellent cod, crispy and flavorful outside, moist and tender inside. And don't forget the hush puppies, the best I have had in many many years!

Google
The Cookout was at a walkathon in Los Altos. Have the spot a try and picked up their cod and fries... and DAYM! Hella good! The food was great! Big Cod chunks and steak style fries. Haven't tried the litter items on the menu but definitely get the cod and fish.

Google
This is an odd little place. It's a food truck that sits in a parking lot on Pear Ave all by itself three days a week from 4 pm til something. So you are outside, not outside, no tables or chairs but, man, this guy does some good fish and chips. One of the best we've had in this area.

David

Google
The catfish was Superb! Hot and crispy. The Fries were also absolutely The Best I've had, ever.

Yelp
I've definitely had better fish and chips. The Cookout Fish & Chips N More food truck was one of the food truck options at a recent festival in the Bay. I came by to browse the food fare variety in hopes of an early lunch to beat the crowds. This was one that didn't have much of a line. Ordered the beer battered halibut and fries at the main window. The gentleman pointed off to the side and said food would be out the other window in a few minutes. Well, it was a bit confusing since the other window was covered up by some dark fabric and we didn't see anyone else get their order for a while. I circled the truck just to make sure there wasn't some other magical window hidden on the other side. After a bit, they started handing out orders in one big batch. I guess they were trying to prepare multiple orders at once before handing them out. Beer Battered Halibut & Fries ($16) The box came with 3 small pieces of fried fish and a handful of thick cut fries. The food was all hot while I was grateful for. There were packets of ketchup and a little cup of mayo/tartar sauce as well. That said, the fish looked and tasted like what you can get in bulk frozen from Costco, which I understand some restaurants and food trucks do. For the steep $16 price though, I was expecting better quality and a greater quantity. This could easily pass as a kids meal rather than an adult meal. It'd be great if they could be more generous with the fries given starch is cheap or up the quality of the fish. Even just 2 pieces of hand battered, sizeable fish would be a huge improvement. If not, then I hope they consider reducing the price a bit to match what customers get. If you're craving good fish & chips, this may not be the place for you.

Yelp
Picked up lunch at this food truck during Palo Alto's 4th of July Summer Fest & Chili Cook-off. The place was busy! The worker taking my order was distracted and possibly stressed by the nonstop business, neither friendly nor rude, just inattentive. The total wait time for standing in line to order and waiting for the food to be ready was about one hour (that's not an exaggeration). I had a feeling it would take that long, so I didn't bother waiting at the truck. I left and came back. They were out of any and all fish (halibut, etc.) just two hours into the event I was attending, but that's fine cuz I've tried their fish a year ago at the Cupertino Night Market, and it wasn't that impressive. The remaining choices were prawns or chicken tenders, I went with the former and a side of garlic parmesan sauce. The prawns were surprisingly not good, I never knew you could go wrong with shrimp. They were certainly hot and just cooked, but the batter was dry, mealy, unexpectedly tasteless, and falling off the shrimp in clumps. There was just something wrong about it. The fries were mediocre but fine. The garlic parmesan sauce was a bit salty with a somewhat unappealing flavor, but still edible. Maybe I just caught them on a bad day (both times I've had food from The Cookout). Either way, I'm not a big fan.

Yelp
You don't mind many places specializing in catfish (or souther fried fish) so when I found this place I had to try it! I didn't realize going in that it was a good truck, but I was planning on taking the food to go anyway. It was parked behind another restaurant and in a parking lot that I honestly almost missed the first time trying to find it. The staff was all really nice and friendly, they gave me extra sauce and helped me decide what to get. I really wanted to try the bacon bourbon cheese fries and catfish.. didn't realize the fish came with fries so I pretty much had double. They had thicker ridge cut fries and they were good! The bacon fries were so tasty!!! Lots of flavor and the sauce on top was totally worth ordering. You know the food was fresh too because it took a little while (but not an obsessive amount) of time to cook, and it was still hot when I got back to my hotel. The fish batter was crispy on the outside and the fish inside was flaky and buttery. Really well-done! Definitely would come back here, there was no wait either when I went so I got exactly what I wanted in a quick manner!

Yelp
Enjoyed the delivered catfish and chips for lunch. The southern styled cornmeal crusted catfish (smallish) were crispy (perhaps a tad more robust than desired). Chips were perfectly fried and tasted great. Also sampled the cod which were not doughy, battered perfectly, again very crisp and above-average. The accompanied tartar sauce tasted fresh and well-made.

Yelp
Had this for the very first time at the Palo Alto community center during 4th of July. Unfortunately this missed the mark. For fish and chips and 2 sauces totalled up to $21 with tip included. It came with steak fries and 3 pieces of halibut. We waited for 10 mins to order but waited 20 mins to get our order. When we got our food, only the fries were hot and fish was barely warm then we only got 1 sauce when we paid for 2. The fish seemed like it was previously frozen like the Gorton's Beer Battered Fish and then it was airfried. I was hoping for the halibut to be hot and flaky. Maybe it was also the event and there were just too many orders to handle. Idk for $21 we were disappointed.

Yelp
I just happened to find them near a store to try them out. The people eating outside told me that I wouldn't regret buying fish and chips from them. And let me tell you, they weren't wrong. I believe this is the best fish and chips in the bay area. The fish is cooked to perfection. I love the coating they have on the fish. It's so so yummy. I generally get the catfish. Their shrimp and chips are really great as well. I've also bought their wings, which although taste pretty good, aren't as special as their fish and chips.

Yelp
Best fish N chips I have ever tried! Ribs were off the hook! Finally had a chance to stop by and try it out. Would recommend to friends. Thumbs up!

Yelp
It was a little hard to find but called and got the exactly location which is behind a bar called Fred's Place in MTN View. I got the 2 piece catfish w/fries and 6 pieces of shrimp. Both were delicious and seasoned just right! It really hit the spot. Also, while you wait, you can go into the bar and have a drink if you so choose. :) I will be back!

Yelp
Can't say no to fish... Was able to get 1 PC of snapper and 1 PC of cod for $10. Service was great already. Now let's try how delish these fish are.... Update Sauce or dips were pretty good.

Yelp
The Cookout Food Truck had been on my radar for a few months and when I saw that they would be in my complex where I work I was very excited to give them a try. There aren't many food trucks that are really doing fried shrimp and fried fish the way that I like it so given they're 4 star rating and yummy pictures I was sold. The menu isn't too big and overwhelming, they have shrimp, catfish, cod, red snapper, chicken strips and fries. I usually would go for fried catfish whenever I'm ordering fish somewhere but I went against my better judgement and ordered red snapper which was a big mistake. While I really want to like this place, the food was a huge let down and waste of my money. The red snapper was extremely dry and fishy tasting, like it was maybe old or something. It definitely was not fresh and it shouldn't have tasted or smelled the way it did. The fries were a bit soggy but that was my only saving grace as I had to throw the fish away and I was hungry. I'm highly disappointed with this place, three of us ordered the red snapper and all had the same complaint and ended up throwing our food away. If you're going to have a food truck serving seafood you need to make sure that it is fresh and prepared correctly. Huge disappointment!!

Yelp
Rod and Atira are fantastic. And their food? JUST AS FANTASTIC!!! I hired their food truck service for a community event that ended up rounding 650 people in the South Bay (Easter egg hunt). Rod was so easy to talk to. He was polite, professional, and just genuinely loves to cook for people. They came earlier to get stationed and set up. And when it was time for lunch, they were more than ready to get cookin and provide food for patrons. In my event coordinating career, I've dealt with all dynamics of caterers and food truckers. And some are just so big headed, you can tell they're only in it for the money. Rod and Atira are something else. They were all smiles the entire time as they were cooking and serving. My two kids loved their chicken tenders! And my husband and I loved their fish and chips!!! YUMMM!!!

Yelp
One of the very best fish n chip places I have ever been to. I had the cod both times I went and my wife got the halibut tonight and it was delicious. Not grease at all, the fish are fried to perfection!can't wait to try the snapper next time.Nice work Rod and crew I will definitely be back again very soon.

Yelp
One of the best Fish & Chips eatery in the Bay Area! We stopped by on Friday night, parked our car on the curbside. There were handful of people waiting for their order already. We ordered tenders, prawns, hush puppies, honey garlic sauce and chips. 50 mins later.... oh yeah, it's a long wait BUT let me tell ya, it's worth it! We ate inside our car, our first night out during SIP - gotta keep it somewhat low risk, right? The prawns is hella succulent and Crunchy, with capital C!! I love the chips too.... they are steak cut fries, nice and crunchy. I really wish I brought my malt vinegar. hehe The best hush puppies I ever tasted! So good.... I don't know what they did to it. That honey garlic sauce..... gosh, dip everything in it. Well done The Cookout food truck! Thank you for making out first night out a good one.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the cod fish and chips. It's definitely at high standard similar to what you'd enjoy in the UK. The serving sizes were good and you can tell everything is very fresh/made to order. Would recommend!!

Yelp
Wandered around a bit and noticed a couple of food trucks in a parking lot so wandered right in. the Cookout is like your home away from home when you are either a transplanted Southerner far far away from deep fried foods or someone who just has a hankering for deep fried foods. The menu here is short and sweet: fried fish, chicken wings, fried shrimp, and a few more items I glossed over, served over a bed of large steak cut french fries. Since they make it right on the spot, be prepared to wait a bit. I ordered the Garlic Spicy chicken wings and they were exactly that: spicy, garlicky, and with the perfect amount of stick sauce. Don't be afraid to use your fingers, no forks allowed. It also comes with a small side of coleslaw. A good balance of sweet and tart to offset the spicy fried entrees. Service was good and my friend enjoyed her fried fish. The batter looked like cornmeal, so not only did she have the major crunch but good texture to the breaded fish. Come back soon, we miss you!

Yelp
After spamming Off the Grid in Mountain View for a couple of months, I've grown tired of the regular trucks there, so it was great to see some new blood in the mix! This was pricey as you would expect from any food truck in mountain view, but had above average fish and chips given the location and was reasonable for the price. (Barbara's Fishtrap in half moon bay is a tough act to follow.) Halibut Fish n Chips - 4/5. The batter was a heavier layer than I would normally expect, but the batter/fish ratio was still good, and the halibut was surprisingly tender for fish and chips. Hush Puppies - 4/5. I love hush puppies, and this was faithful to the ones I had over in the south. I'm not sure if those puppies were necessarily the best puppies ever, but this was way better than other puppies in California. Puppies. Cole Slaw - 3/5. The creamier version, drenched in mayo. Standard all around. Price - 2/5. I'm a bit salty that I paid 19 for this since it wasn't a ton of food, but that was partially my fault for spending 4 extra on the slaw, and 3 extra to upgrade the fries to puppies. Probably should have just gotten an additional order of hush puppies along with the fish and chips, since 12 for the halibut is actually reasonable.

Yelp
I have been passing this truck for the past couple weeks, and have been wondering about it til now. It's parked at the Valero gas station, so luckily I had to get gas. I finally got to try it. It has a simple menu with a few different fish to fry and wings to fry with their sauces. Also a few simple sides which included Hush Puppies (Yes!). I've been craving catfish, so I ordered that and it comes with fries and coleslaw. Also, I ordered the Hush Puppies of course. The owner and Chef were very friendly. I had to still drive home, so I really hoped that my food didn't get too soggy when I got home, AND IT DIDN'T! I was so happy! The catfish, fries, and hush puppies were crispy and good! I liked the flavor on both the catfish and hush puppies! I will surely go back again and try the other part of the menu! Thanks again! Had my fix of Catfish and hush puppies!

Yelp
Wow... this food is amazing. So hot and fresh! My only complaint is that the fish and chips is so good that I don't want to try anything else! I love the snapper, cod, and catfish nuggets. The fries are seasoned really well and great portions for the price. I would have never tried a fried oreo but someone bought one for me and wow... delicious! Definitely stopping by the next time I'm in mtn view.

Yelp
Amazing Fish n Chips food truck that I've chased around the SF Bay Area. VERY limited hours but with the wait. The truck is parked behind Fred's Place on Old Middlefield Rd Mountain View
google avatar

Tiffany J.

Yelp
So glad I finally was able to catch them! I got catfish and prawns. No exaggeration when I say these tasted so nostalgic it reminded me of fish fry Fridays, Jodeci, and Spades.... Very well seasoned and fried to perfection! Cant wait to try halibut and wings next time!

Yelp
My car was in the shop and thought that I'd have to skip or DoorDash lunch. Then I remembered that the Cookout was parked outside work so I decided to try. I ordered the prawns. It said it came with 6 pieces but mine came with 5 and fries. Meaty and flavorful. Fries were fresh and crispy just how I like them! No one wants stale fries. I also got the hush puppies and those were good too. Probably one of my favorite food trucks yet! Would def come back.

Yelp
Terrible service with overpriced mediocre food. For verification purposes we had this encounter 7/13/18 in downtown SJ at a little music and beer event set up by the city in Plaza de Cesar Chavez. The portions are small with no example plate to show size, and the prices are high for the dry fish and half a baby handful of steak fries. However my bigger problem is their attitude. My partner and I ordered ~$30 worth of food and only found out afterward that they didn't have cocktail sauce. Okay, that's a bit odd for a fish and chips joint, but not a huge deal in itself. So my partner went back to ask if we could have two more sides of the marinara sauce that came with the fried ravioli we ordered. She returned a little flustered, and reported that the man at the window told her she could only have one side of sauce, and reluctantly at that. This upset me, as certainly ordering that much food should entitle us to a penny's worth of condiments to dip it in. I went back to the window myself and explained the situation sternly but politely, only to have the man argue with me for a couple minutes before eventually relenting and giving me another plastic ramekin of sauce. His attitude was poor and he seemed annoyed and offended that we didn't just accept his original judgement and eat our fish dry. Good service can go a long way, especially when you don't have great food. Unfortunately, this business has neither.

Yelp
The Cookout FT has an A1 team and the food is fire! I usually pick between the wings and fries or the smoked deep fried ribs. I'd have to say from the 2 the smoked deep fried ribs are my favorite but there's just something about the honey garlic from the wings dripping onto the fries that keeps me going back to the wings. Great Food and Great Service

Tracy S.

Yelp
We just had their catfish fish and chips at a Juneteenth festival. We loved the cornmeal crust: was super crispy and tasty, and not greasy at all. The tartar sauce was yum too. The garlic Parmesan fries were a treat. Good portion size. I hope we find the truck again!

Yelp
First of all, i just want to thank you Rod and Atira, The Cookout Food Truck for coming out to Varian Medical Systems and feeding all of us. Everyone was absolutely stuffed! The food was so good! Hot, crispy, juicy, full of flavor. The cod was moist and flaky, the jumbo prawns hella good, hush puppies flavor explosion, fried raviolis awesome, chicken wings crispy and delicious, Halibut, Salmon, Fried Oreo's ( i didn't get any) No complaints just happy employees with stuffed bellies. Please keep doing what you love, it shows in your cooking! Thank you again! Definitely will have you guys back.

Yelp
I had heard about this truck and found it in Mountain View one day and was soooo glad I did. Not too sure of any other trucks that offer 4 DIFFERENT kinds of fish, chicken AND prawns? Get it straight...you not at a restaurant y'all...it's a TRUCK! If you find another one that does, let me know, cuz I have no problem comparing. :-) So, even though I'm allergic to the fish itself (my husband had the catfish and LOVED IT!) I had the prawns and wish I could forget about how good they tasted. LOL. The right krispiness and flavor the poor things didn't even have a chance..and I can't think of anyone else to even compare them to. Taking our meals to go home, everything was so well packed, good and hot even the Hush Puppies stayed good and krispy after stopping on the way home and still getting home late. If you see this truck in your area...run after it, catch it, stop and get your grub owne!! I'm going back for the chicken next time...LOL :-)

Yelp
Saw this food truck at Valero while pumping gas and decided to check it out. In the end I'm glad I did. I got the snapper meal which came with fires and coleslaw. The portion sizes were great and the fish were deep fried to perfection. The fish tasted fresh, it had a nice golden crispy outside and very tender inside. It was seasoned, battered, and breaded well complimenting the fish flavor well. Fries are what you expect and the coleslaw was okay. Meal also came with packets of tartar sauce, hot sauce, ketchup with a garish of lemon. Menu is simple and straight forward with catfish, snapper, cod, and halibut as your fish options. They also have prawns and wings available. Sides include fries, hush puppies, and coleslaw. Service was great and everyone was extremely friendly and hospitable. I liked the whole experience so much I recommended it to my friend to meet me there on his way home from work for dinner. The truck is located in a shopping center to there is ample parking space.

Yelp
Stopped by the cookout today on my lunch, and placed an order for sum kickin bourbon wings and I must say AMAZING quick service very customer friendly.I can't wait to try the other items listed on the menu everything sounds so delicious great food.

Yelp
TL;DR -- Food wasn't enough to remove the bad taste from waiting over 90 minutes. Had a chance to try this one at the Moveable Feast in Willow Glen tonight...could definitely tell they weren't prepared for a large sales volume quite yet. Food, by the time I got home to eat it, was good! I imagine the hush puppies were better piping hot out of the fryer as was the cod (would have loved to get halibut but it was sold out). I liked the seasoning, breading on the fish was nice and crispy but not too thick, decent amount of fish, chips were also well fried and not burnt or too soggy. So why two stars? Time. We got there at 6, I probably ordered around 6:30. Took around an hour and a half to get my meal. By then, the temps had dropped into the low 60s with a decent wind. I had gotten over a cold the week before and was not stoked about standing around waiting for it, plus since they were jumping around ticket number-wise, there was no real telling about how fast they were moving through the line. Hopefully by the next time they do an event like this, they get the bugs worked out...my girlfriend and I went to meet up with friends. She got her order and everyone at the table had time to eat and go home by the time I got my food (which by then I had to take home vs eat at the venue). All I can say is if they do another venue like this where its a food-specific gathering, please bring an extra pair of hands to handle the kitchen or work on the processes to make it more efficient. Another suggestion would be to give a running ETA on when to expect food BEFORE someone places an order, ESPECIALLY when its going to take over 60 minutes to receive. This wasn't a sit-down sort of dinner thing, its a food truck where you tend to expect a little but reasonable wait.

Tatiana V.

Yelp
This is one of my favorites! Great food great service. They are very friendly. I always get the catfish. I am happy to see Mountain View finally have comfort food that I can buy on the go!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is unbelievable. Best fried fish I've had outside of the Southeast.
google avatar

Yelp
My son and I just had dinner here! Wow! Excellent halibut, fries, hush puppies, cole slaw and these magical potato puffs! Yum! Super friendly guys! Thanks Rod and fam!
google avatar

Abby B.

Yelp
WOW! Is the best way to describe their food. I had the catfish, but my coworkers tried different types of fish. We all agreed that their food is excellent! Hopefully they will come visit us in Campbell again!

Sabrina R.

Yelp
The fried Oreos was lit asf I recommend the fried Oreos‼ the best I ever had a plus is that there BIG

D B.

Yelp
First time trying The Cookout and wanted to order the cod and hush puppies, but both were sold out. So I ordered the snapper & chips for $10. After 15 minutes of waiting, my order was ready. The snapper was coated in a cornmeal batter. While the flavor was good the fish was a bit dry. I hope to try the cod or halibut next time.
google avatar

Kat C.

Yelp
Got the Fried cod and chips and it was great. All the right fixins were included. I would recommend they find an area with more corporate pedestrians as they were on a side street with not much visibility. I will be back to try everything else! Also they were very nice and quick service.
google avatar

Gina B.

Yelp
I have lived here a couple years and just realized this truck was next to me. My son loves the fried catfish, as do I, and the hush puppies... reminds me of Louisiana. The prawns are cooked perfect, too.
google avatar

Marylou G.

Yelp
Tried The Cookout for the first time and had the halibut fish and chips. WOW!! It was so delicious!! Fish wasn't dry and had great flavor. I will definitely go back for more!!! Steak fries were perfect match with the fish!!!
google avatar

Stephanie R.

Yelp
They were at the moveable feast in Willow Glen tonight. Ok food but REALLY slow. We waited over an hour and there weren't even a lot of customers! This must be their first food truck...won't waste my time with them again. There are way better options out there in a quarter of the time!

Indrani S.

Yelp
My fiancé and I tried the prawn, cod, honey garlic wings, fries, and hush puppies. Everything was delicious. Fiancé's favorite was the hush puppies (which, honestly, were the best hush puppies I've ever had), followed by the prawn. The prawn was a standout for me, too, but everything was top notch. Great crunch to sauce ratio on the wings. Solid fries (and I'm not usually a fan of steak cut fries). Fiancé doesn't even like fish, but stole a good helping of cod from my plate. He owes me a trip back here as recompense.
google avatar

Cato S.

Yelp
We found The Cookout on Montecito Ave, in Mountain View, off Shoreline Blvd, across from the Jack in the Box and Safeway on 7/12/18. They were great about answering all our questions about food allergies, which were many! I got the Catfish n chips, which comes in a cornmeal batter. It was better than any fish n chips I have ever had in my life!! It wasn't greasy the way a lot of fried fish is and the cornmeal was flavorful and delicious. It was $11 something on the menu, as were some of the other fish, including snapper. (The halibut and cod are more costly, if I remember correctly.) We took our food home and I had a salad, which allowed me to save half my fish and chips, effectively making $11 something into 2 delicious, satisfying meals. We did wait longer than most people expect to for Food Truck meals, but it was completely worth the wait and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Good food done right tends to take time. My only suggestion would be that adding sweet potato fries to the menu could be a healthier option for diabetics or people who try to eat high-fiber diets. The fries were yummy, but I like the taste of sweet potatoes better.
google avatar

Sofia M.

Yelp
I got the cod fish and chips and they're absolutely amazing so perfectly crisp and the fish is good quality

Allison S.

Yelp
I live nearby and have seen their "in the neighborhood" post on Nextdoor. Was out for a walk tonight and figured I'd grab some for dinner. I got the hush puppies, husband got the fish and chips. Both were excellent. Fried ravioli is on my list of things to try next time! So glad to have other options than the regular restaurants in the area.

N H.

Yelp
Suuuuper slow!! Waiting for 30 minutes at a food truck?? And the line wasn't even that large! Furthermore - I ordered a *Fanta* and got some fake soda. The food was dry, fatty. All three of us were just disappointed (Location: Stanford )

Bob M.

Yelp
I don't know why they list Rengstorff Ave. in Mountain View as their regular location, I haven't seen them in a long time. I've stopped by many times and they're nowhere to be found. Why can't they commit to a few specific days a week and actually be there, people would go out of their way to stop by because the food is real good.

Ellen C.

Yelp
Awesome fish and chicken!!! Fresh and piping hot when you get your order, the nicest people who know how to cook!!! Will be back for more for sure!!!

Nick V.

Yelp
I thought the guy at the window was nice and the pricing was good, but their service was incredibly slow and the food left a lot to be desired.

Saw the The Cookout Food Truck at the City Hall Square today in downtown mountain view during the Technology Showcase. Needless to say their food was barely fair. Waited over twenty five minutes for our order when there was no other order in front of us. Too long to have to wait for food from a truck. Prawns were not my idea of what prawn looks like, these were medium sized shrimp and were dry inside, coating was a tasteless cornmeal. Their were six small shrimp along with steak fries. The catfish was just o.k. Lots of it. At $12.00 an order I think it's price point is just too high. I think they should add a hush puppy and a spoonful of coleslaw to an order. That way maybe $12.00 wouldn't hurt so bad at lunch time. Can do better at The Fish Market in Palo Alto during lunch.
