The 17 Best Places to Eat in State College, Home of Penn State | Eater

"Serving Penn Staters since 1926, the Corner Room stands as a tribute to Dear Old State, and it’s an essential bucket-list destination for students, alumni, and visitors. Diners can expect a heaping serving of Penn State memorabilia, as well as both classic and reimagined American comfort food, like a 40-year-old chili recipe and a peppery skillet of Eggs in Purgatory. End your meal with a serving of warm grilled stickies — a cross between a sticky bun and a cinnamon roll that originated at the legendary but now-closed Ye Olde College Diner. Go the extra step and top your grilled stickies with a heaping scoop of vanilla ice cream." - Victoria Gough

Best smoked salmon sandwich I ate in State College. Breads were very loaded with lots of cream cheese, salmon, arugula, and pickled red onion. It was normally coming with chips but I upgraded it to with salad and salad was also very nice with tasty olive oil/balsamic dressing. My Mediterranean stomach had a real fest. Will come again soon. It was a very busy time with THON but my order still was not late.

Google
5⭐️ BREAKFAST in the heart of Penn State’s campus. Looks and tastes homemade. Local bakery-sourced croissants and breads😍via Cakeshop by Tati, perfectly cooked eggs, elite pancakes, solid cup of joe and outstanding service. Can’t miss morning spot.

Google
It was really good and convenient to walk to. It’s right outside of the Penn state campus. Highly recommend.

Zach Snyder

Google
The most iconic restaurant in State College. Food is always delicious and the staff is courteous and extremely professional. If you've never been, it's a must.

Google
By far the best eggs benedict I’ve ever had! Most places don’t do much with the standard English muffin, but here it was crispy and garlicky which enhanced the savoriness of the ham, egg yolk and amazing hollandaise sauce. It was a perfect and super satisfying breakfast.

9/21/24 - My son and I attended a Penn State game and a Steelers game this weekend. Our home is Birmingham, AL. We wanted to experience games at these two great stadiums and eat at establishments with a great tradition. We were very pleased with The Corner Room. Very pleasant staff from the hostess who recommended we eat at the bar since we were a party of two and the very friendly, attentive young man serving us at the bar. I had the double stack burger/fries and my son had the buffalo fried chicken sandwich/fries. The burger was very good and my son enjoyed his sandwich. Fun traditional place to eat with good food - highly recommend you eat at The Corner Room!

Google
I’ve been to the corner room for brunch and dinner. The steak and frites were good, cooked perfectly and the fries well seasoned. The brioche french toast was also a good choice for brunch. They were busy for brunch so the service wasn’t that good but I would still come back.

Google
The food is delicious, it’s classic American food, we went there at Memorial Day, it’s a Sunday and the parking is free.

Yelp
Had an enjoyable late lunch at Tge Corner Room, directly across College Ave from the Penn State campus. The decor is old school dark paneling with plenty of interesting booth and banquette spaces, and fun historic photos of State College. I enjoyed a quite tasty double stack cheeseburger. The Corner Room also serves breakfast all day, which was an unexpected pleasant twist I'll have to try on a future visit. Service was fast and attentive. A very nice experience overall.

Yelp
Went in to buy Grilled Stickies to take home (thought this was the only place you can buy them). The host said they were out of the plain ones and only had ones with nuts. A waitress she thought they had plain ones in the back so they went to look. In the meantime another gentleman came out and asked if he could help us, I explained to him we were wanting to purchase stickies so he proceeded to ring us up. Turns out all the ones up front were indeed plain ones! Think maybe the first guy was newer. You have to buy them in increments of 2 here. They are also sold at The Creamery and you can buy them individually there for slightly higher price. We didn't dine in so I can't speak to the restaurant experience however the menu looks good! *edited went to eat the Sticky buns today and then indeed HAVE NUTS! The gentleman who sold them to me said if they had nuts it would say it largely on the box but they don't! Thankfully we are not allergic and don't mind nuts(my daughter will be disappointed).

Yelp
When it's not overrun with people on the weekends, this place is really nice to set down and eat. The sandwiches are so good, along with desserts you'll enjoy The only negatives I can really say is the Lemonade's kinda expensive at $6 per, and the chicken Alfredo's just mac and cheese with some chicken on it. When you get the chance to eat here, go for it.
google avatar

Kat V.

Yelp
Sadly, I could only get a grilled cheese. On sour dough bread, which I don't like. Seems odd that you can't substitute, but the pulled pork was good and surprisingly spicy. The restaurant is loud, especially on weekends. Service was good and friendly and the food was decent.

Yelp
Went on a game day Saturday was expecting it to be a way worse wait but only about 10 to 15 mins! We had a super nice waitress my mom started with the grilled sticky latte for $7 it even comes with a little piece of sticky bun! It was pretty good! I then ordered the ham and cheese for $13 but put it on a wrap with goat cheese and apricot jam was so freaking good, when I actually got home, I got ingredients to make my own at home. My mom got the bruschetta grilled cheese for $12 which was great as well!!

Yelp
The Corner Room is a great place to eat at in downtown State College. Ample space and seating with attentive and caring service. There are many food options! Service was prompt and everyone enjoyed their meal. I personally had the Eggs in Purgatory dish and it was tasty and filling. A great place to dine at.

Yelp
Charming setting but food is dreadful. Ordered fried chicken sandwich--an easy enough preparation--and it tasted disgusting. Chicken was fried for far too long in old and stale tasting oil. Texture was very tough. No way to send it back because it was takeout. A big waste of 20.00.

Landen J.

Yelp
DO NOT get an omelette from here. Worst I have ever tasted. The Eggs were clearly fake, they were very slimely and disgusting, as I cut into it. Grease literally poured out like a river. Do not go here if you want an Omelette

Joey G.

Yelp
Enjoyed for a quick lunch bite on move in day. Wasn't too crowded, service was quick. Food was pretty good. Had BLTs which were tasty.

Yelp
The last time I ate at The Corner Room was a long, long time ago. I am glad to report I was not disappointed in my recent visit. A Penn Stare institution, you still enter the revolving door to an all wood interior with booths and other seating types. My really patient and sweet waitress gave an entree suggestion, and it was just right...double cheeseburger and fries. I also took her suggestion of stickies with ice cream over a milkshake, and spot on as well. Amazing how good things do not change even with new owners and I am very glad for it.

Yelp
The service is fantastic 99% of the time. The food is always great, though things such as the complete were overcooked. I would recommend the muffin of the day, buttered and grilled. Avocado toast is a must, and their waffles reign supreme. The atmosphere is welcoming, laid back, and very communal. The mimosa tower is a staple and tradition you must have at least once. Don't be fooled by the price tag--it is a lot and worth it!

Yelp
Daughter has dairy allergy. Normal menu can accommodate. Was invited for Easter and they had absolutely nothing on buffet she could eat. Charged full price for her plate when the only thing she could have was bacon and manager refused to make anything in the kitchen to accommodate allergy. Not impressed with customer service.

Yelp
Ordered steak and eggs for breakfast. Absolutely phenomenal, steak cooked to perfection and very tender. Awesome environment and will be back. Couldn't recommend enough

Ashley Y.

Yelp
They charge you for salad dressing with your salad. Talk about nickel and diming! I get it's just a dollar but come on, a salad is supposed to come with dressing! I tried to call but there is no phone number for them. Wish I looked at my bill before I paid it.
google avatar

Yelp
We shared the chili and really enjoyed all the flavors in it and would absolutely order it again. We both had the Caesar salad which we also enjoyed. The croutons tasted house made. We added chicken to the salad that tasted more grilled than roasted which it says on the menu. We were very happy because we prefer grilled and it was perfectly seasoned. We enjoyed the atmosphere food service and I really loved my blackberry Mock Tail as well as the music that they play. There are many restaurants in the area to try. We are very happy that we chose this one and will most definitely be back when we are in the area.

Yelp
Strawberry margarita was so fresh and summery. For my dinner I enjoyed the elevated grilled cheese which was a symphony of decadent cheeses, also had a side of Mac and cheese! So delicious! Cute little pub atmosphere and a State College staple !
google avatar

Dave F.

Yelp
So the menu options were average, drink choices were plentiful. The mimosa was average.. Wife had the caesar salad with chicken tenders, (no Ranch dressing) and she liked the meal and said chicken was real good. (She likes ranch vs caesar dressing) i had the reuben and it was real good, treat was having Martins kettle cooked chips, my favorite. We had mimosas and I didnt care for the mimosa..sorry. The service was real good, thank you. and the prices were average.

Yelp
They were very busy. Service was a little slow. But the server told us in advance. She was supper sweet the whole experience. The food was great. It is obviously an iconic place with the authentic feel of the place. But please read this, very important. If you get 1 thing to eat. Get the Grilled sticky's. They are too die for.
google avatar

Yelp
Iconic location - but even with the new menu it wasn't what it used to be food wise. Limited menu that was just mediocre- it could be fabulous. Bring back the open faced turkey sandwich and French onion soup. The calamari was chewy and over breaded. Add fresh cut fries. The waiter was great ! The atmosphere great! My husband said his Ruben was decent. Due to lack of menu options probably won't be back. I do love the location and atmosphere though -which will always bring people in - no matter what.

Yelp
The service was great. The waitress checked in on us throughout our dining experience. Our food came out so quickly that we initially thought the order was for a different table. The cocktails were just ok. Also, the sandwich was served without the pickle and chips, though that was quickly remedied after calling it out to our waitress. The side of roasted broccoli was exceptional. However, the sandwich had potential but the bread may be the downfall. The thick slices of bread made it difficult to eat and the bread fell apart. The bacon and turkey were tasty and the portions of protein and vegetables (lettuce and tomato) was balanced. The herb aioli was surprisingly fantastic.

Yelp
Looking for brunch before a Penn State Football game, we decided to go to The Corner Room on the corner of College Avenue and South Allen Street. The town restaurant were full of Penn State fans dressed in their white shirts for the game, so we had to put our name in. Our wait was less than 20 minutes before we were shown to our table. We loved all the old photos and Penn State decor. The atmosphere was festive with everyone looking forward to the game. We ordered the avocado toast which was delicious along with a "skillet" called Eggs in Purgatory. They were equally good with a hint of spice/chili flakes, feta, and tomato sauce. The fried chicken sandwich with hot honey was also tasty but could have used a side salad rather than a bag of chips. Overall, it was a fun game-day destination!

Yelp
A last minute decision to stop in was a good one. Quiet weekend in HV so we walked in and were seated right away. We weren't too hungry so had soup, chicken Caesar salad and the ham and cheese sandwich with chips. All were good, the sandwich was a surprise love for me. Trying to replicate it at home. The strawberry lemonade with vodka was so refreshing and tasty too! Service was top notch. Everyone was pleasant and accommodating. Love the historic and diner-esque feel. Will have to try other dishes next time.

Larry H.

Yelp
Always busy, but worth the wait. The double stacked hamburger was one of the best burgers I have had anywhere. Staff is always busy and serving customers but attentive pre order as well as during the meal for whatever you may need
google avatar

Lynn L.

Yelp
In town for work meetings and stopped in with 2 co-workers. We loved this place! It has a very historic, northeast feel to it. The service is great - very friendly and attentive. We asked our server what she would recommend and she didn't hesitate - Salmon Tostadas and Fried Chicken sandwich. I got the tostadas and I agree- Delicious! Co-workers both got the fried chicken sandwich. One liked it; the other didn't like the sweetness of the hot honey on it. Prices are very reasonable. Would recommend.

Samantha C.

Yelp
The absolute worst dining experience I have ever had. Food was cold, waitress was absolutely HORRIBLE. Waitress Spilt pizza sauce all over the table and floor, stated "that's unfortunate" and walked away. Left the spill there for 20+ minutes and never came back until we asked for a manager. Manager was absolutely useless in the situation. "Took care of it" by taking one drink of the $200 bill. REALLY? . Truly HORRIBLE service. Food was borderline inedible it was so cold.

Yelp
Went here a couple months back for dinner with some buddies. I got the burger and fries and it was pretty good. Service was fairly quick. The ambiance was decent. It's got a family style restaurant vibe to it. I've been here the corner room a few times before and would definitely come back again. I would recommend checking out the Corner Room for a meal if you're in the area.

Yelp
It's been over ten years since I've been to the corner room. I remember it being so yummy during my college days but found that expectations fell short during our last visit over the weekend. It was a football weekend and we were lucky in that we didn't have to wait for a table. We were seated right away and our waiter promptly came over and got our drinks. We had mozzarella sticks and onion rings for an app that were both delicious. We waited forever for our meals. It was almost an hour. Our meals were really yummy. I liked the flavor of my purgatory egg skillet but felt it was missing something. It was almost like a soup - just eggs, tomato sauce and fried onion crisps. I realized that it was supposed to come with bread which our waiter brought over shortly after I asked. It was much better with the bread to soak up but still it would have been better over potatoes or something. My husband enjoyed his wrap and my friends enjoyed their tuna salad sandwich and fried chicken sandwich!
google avatar

JJ G.

Yelp
Disgusting! Highly disappointing. Ordered breakfast eggs over medium. It came out burnt greasy overcooked and raw in spots. The sausage link wasn't even drained of grease. Took one bite of it didn't eat that the potatoes are just cube diced frozen potatoes. You get one slice of toast. Go somewhere else if you can spend some money unless you want nasty food.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
This was our second time to the Corner Room, and our first time for dinner. We love the environment, as the restaurant initially dates back to 1855. For this visit, we had an early dinner on a Sunday, so there was more than enough seating. Service was very friendly and responsive. Our meals were all great, and they are reasonably priced. The beer list is pretty limited, but no complaints! We'll be back again!
google avatar

Karla D.

Yelp
The watermelon salad is outstanding! Burgers are good. Service was absolutely terrible which sucks because I could have left a higher star rating. Oh well, maybe the third time will be the charm.
google avatar

Will M.

Yelp
Diner vibe's restaurant in downtown state college. Small menu but you can get breakfast for dinner. Old fashion was better than expected and came with a piece of bacon. Salad was good. Some good beers on tap.

Amy B.

Yelp
Went for breakfast on a Sunday after a football game. Wait was longer than they estimated, we could only have the buffet which would have been ok except there were many items that needed to be restocked. Scrambled eggs were super wet. Nice selection of everything had been replenished.

Autumn J.

Yelp
Good variety of entrees to choose from. The waiter suggested the prime rib sandwich and did not disappoint. The fried onions were fresh, the meat was flavorful. I'd love to go back. The environment was also pleasant.

Monica C.

Yelp
We loved our brunch and would definitely return. The staff were friendly even during the long wait. Love the text option when the table was available.

Joe Y.

Yelp
Limited menu but enough variety to find something you like. I had the salmon tostados which were very good. My friends liked the burgers. Nice atmosphere also. Street parking in the middle of town made it a little challenge to find a space

Jeffrey S.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick dinner before attending a Penn State basketball game. We were seated quickly and our server was very attentive. I had the shrimp and grits while my wife have the interesting combo of avocado toast and onion rings We were both super pleased with our choices I always thought of the Corner Room as a breakfast place but our dinner changed my mind
google avatar

Maryanne G.

Yelp
Nice staff, solid good quality food, prompt lunch service, great location. Menu has a good variety. The revamped menu is very much improved from the old days. Portobello mushroom ciabatta was very good. Ordered fries rather than chips, and they were nice and thin and crispy.
google avatar

Jennine T.

Yelp
This spot is a bit confusing. First, very cute place -- I love the revolving doors when you go in - I love the way the restaurant looks with the old timey booths and cute tabletops. Everyone was super-friendly. Our server was Jacob, and he deserves 10 stars. Very kind, friendly, quick, and attentive service. The crab dip was delicious and Jacob brought us more pitas for the crab dip before we could even ask. The kids enjoyed their mac and cheese. Just some little stuff, I guess. The "mule" didn't really have much gin or ginger beer. I think it was that homemade way some bartenders make ginger ale when they don't have ginger ale. The quinoa power bowl was advertised as having broccoli, but there wasn't any in there. And the peas in there were like frozen peas. And my husband ordered the side of seasonal vegetables with his sandwich, rather than fries or chips or something, and for $4 extra, he got a small dish of soggy corn (that was like frozen corn). So, that's why this place is confusing. But, it was a good spot for a picky eater we had in our group, and Jacob really took great care of us through this meal.

Simon T.

Yelp
The booths are wonderful and the look of the place will take you back to your time in college, but you can't go home again, alums. Maybe when I was in college I didn't know better, but in 2024 during arts fest we left disappointed in the food. Word to the wise: if you are actually hungry and a section of the menu says "large plates," do not be fooled. This just means it costs more. The "famous" chili came in a cast iron skillet, which I guess was indeed a large plate so they were not dishonest. But the thin surface of chili on said plate was comical. I literally ordered a large plate. With a tiny bit of chili. Ah well. My bad for being a tourist I guess.
google avatar

Yelp
This place was one of the few places I could sit down and bring my, then under 18, daughter with me. We were here to tour the Penn State Campus and needed a place to eat, since we travelled for four hours to get here by car. The service was very nice and friendly and thats what got them 2 stars. The food was not good quality at all and we ate it, out of hunger. Even the Mozzarella sticks were not good. They tasted like frozen off the shelf and baked. I am glad that my daughter chose a different University, so I dont have to come here again. I do feel bad for the wait staff as they were great though.

Yelp
When I come home to State College I think of several things: Beaver Stadium, The Lion Shrine, Old Main, and last but not least The Corner Room. A State College staple since 1927, the Corner Room may not be the fanciest restaurant on College Avenue, but it sure is the most iconic. Their menu is filled with simple fare that gets the job done, everything under $14.00 or so. My personal favorites are the Chicken & Broccoli Pasta, the Chipotle BBQ Burger, the Hot Turkey (roasted turkey on Italian bread covered in gravy, served with mash or fries) and the classic Chicken Basket. I'm sure the menu has changed over the years (RIP Monday night endless pasta ) but I'm pretty sure you can still get the things I mentioned above. As I said prior, the Corner Room is in no way the fanciest or best restaurant on College Ave-- but it takes the cake as many peoples favorite. It's affordable for college students to enjoy on their limited budget, and reminiscent of simpler times for alumni. Their "Meet Me at the Corner," slogan was something we actually said while enjoying our time at Penn State, and having heard recently of its impending sale, I hope that other college students are able to enjoy it for years to come. My brother worked at the Corner Room during his Freshman and Sophomore years of college and when it came time to graduate, instead of picking some fancy restaurant that he had only been able to afford dinner at once while in school, he picked the modest Corner Room which more accurately embodies his time at Penn State. I guess what I'm trying to describe here is this: The Corner Room is a 5 star restaurant in my book because of the tradition and memories it represents and the food is just okay. You're not going to have the best meal of your life here, but you may just make some of the best memories of your life here.

F L.

Yelp
No accessible rest room, should you need one. Must use a long flight of stairs. Good prices and fast service.
google avatar

Janet H.

Yelp
Lots of cute places to eat at PSU, choose a different restaurant! We came at 12:30 and asked for a lunch menu. We were told they used this menu until 3pm. All breakfast choices (omelettes, pancakes, oatmeal. but they did offer crab cakes, salads and a BLT sandwich. My daughter ordered the Turkey BLT and enjoyed it, (thus 3 stars), but sadly, my meal was not good. I ordered the classic Eggs Benedict anIt also came with a side of potatoes). The eggs were cooked so long, they were actually hard boiled. The yolk rolled right off the muffin. Same with the second one. I was so disappointed . The potatoes were seasoned so heavily, I couldn't eat them. So, not a great experience. Don't offer eggs Benedict if your chef doesn't know how to poach an egg.
google avatar

Joyce T.

Yelp
Had the breakfast BLT sandwich and my husband sausage and biscuit pie! Great coffee! Friendly staff!
google avatar

Marcie W.

Yelp
Guess we came in with different expectations than what The Corner Room offers. Very diner food that we normally prefer to do for breakfast. For dinner, we enjoy more "refined" food for lack of a better description. Had a burger and the chicken sandwich. Both were just okay flavor-wise and on the smallish size. Chips came in a bag. Fries were good classic fries. Service was solid. Might try for breakfast, but wouldn't do dinner again.

Michael L.

Yelp
Consistent, friendly, basic. Not to mention it's an institution in State College. Won't win any culinary awards but you will leave satisfied.
google avatar

Errol W.

Yelp
Went in with pretty low expectations based on reviews here. Seems like it is hit or miss for many folks. I'll say I got the watermelon caprese salad with salmon and it was damn good. Can't say much about anything else other than it's a cool place with a lot of history. It's kind of a step up from diner food. Could it be better? I'm sure it could be. But for State College it's decent.
google avatar

Kristine A.

Yelp
Pretty disappointing actually. Considering the reputation this place has, I don't know where they went wrong after so many decades. I decided to go there after not being back for like 20 yrs. Well, how unfortunate for me. I got a few different breakfast items. I started w/ a fruit salad & none of the fruit was ripe. Ugh. I got a pancake w/ blueberries & the consistency was so weird; every time I tried to take a piece w/ my fork it would fall apart. It didn't even taste that good either. The breakfast potatoes that I got were essentially tiny, frozen potatoes which were over cooked & pretty pathetic. I mean seriously? The only reason why they didn't get one star was the the fresh juice & the pumpkin muffin I got which were both damn good. Certainly don't not worth going back though.

Bill S.

Yelp
Meh. The Corner Room is now a pale shadow of its former glory. Stopped in last weekend after being away for a few years and was very disappointed. What used to be a multipage menu now fits on a placemat. Six of us all ordered different items. The Caesar Salad with salmon was the best choice of the bunch, however you could tell it was a very cheap cut of salmon. The chili was more like a meat sauce with gristly ground beef. The shrimp and grits tasted like they just added some shrimp to the chili (gristle and all) and the grits had the consistency of instant mashed potatoes, definitely not what i would call grits. Our server was great though. But sadly, we all decided that we would not return.
