How to Eat Your Way Around Rappahannock County in 24 Hours | Eater DC

"Sperryville’s beloved Corner Store is a must-stop, functioning both as a place to grab groceries, gifts, and essentials and as a source for truly spectacular breakfast biscuits. Even if you’re just dropping in for food, the biscuits stand out, and a rotating menu of quiches makes the counter worth checking every time." - Lulu Chang

The Corner Store is a beautiful surprise nestled in this small, historic town. From the outside, it has a charming, old-town façade—but step inside and you’re greeted by a thoughtfully curated mix of local goods, snacks, wines, and gourmet pantry items. It has great taste, literally and figuratively. We picked up a Nightingale chocolate ice cream sandwich, and it was phenomenal—rich, indulgent, and the perfect sweet treat after a day of exploring. The whole store is a delightful blend of rustic charm and upscale market. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to linger.

Bar Frances at the Corner Store is a must if you enjoy craft cocktails! The bartenders know what they are doing and they come up with amazing seasonal cocktails! Bar food is very tasty!

This little store has all the major grocery items that you might need when traveling to the Shenandoah valley. They have packed sandwiches, cheese, ham, fruits, packaged goods, and even alcohol. The price is reasonable, and the vibe is great.

Great people. Ranger cookies were delicious. Got some beers from the store and drank them upstairs post Old Rag.

Really nice and conveniant store on the way too Shenandoah National Park, with a lot of local product. Stopped here for a sandwich to go.

Google
Kind staff and delicious vegetarian sandwiches. Nice to have an upscale market in the area with gourmet goodies. Lovely parking area and tables outside, friendly locals. Hope to come back when the adjacent pizza place and little bar Francis are open. Cool spot!

Yelp
We stayed at a nearby cabin for a weekend. Stopped through as we were going to Shenandoah. Super cute little store - it had a very nice variety of staples that allowed us to get what we needed after forgetting a few items at home. Nice local wine selection, too!

Yelp
Very cute little general store that has a good mix of necessary provisions (like produce and eggs), local goods (candles, T-shirts, and other souvenirs), and some fun sweet treats (including incredible cookies). There's also a great range of wine and cocktail ingredients, like syrups and vermouths. There are some premade goodies like soups and pies in the freezer- we picked up some black forest ham and tomato fennel soup.

Yelp
Love love this market. They always have what you need and have high quality selections. Don't leave without John Kelly chocolates

Yelp
Hands down, the Park Ranger cookies are the best that I have had. The staff is always friendly & the ambiance is welcoming. This is a quaint country store offering a variety of items, including cookies, some basic groceries, deli counter, wine, candles, cool coffee cups, etc. I always stop in when I am in the area. This visit scored me a high quality reusable Corner Store grocery bag, delicious chicken salad &, of course, the cookies.

Yelp
This place is a surprisingly functional grocery store as well as having a fantastic wine and beer selection. We spent a bunch of time in Sperryville and are slowly (or maybe not so slowly) getting to know the various cool things. One thing it doesn't have is a real grocery store. This place isn't that, but is pretty nice. First, it is more expensive than it should be, but that's to be expected in a somewhat touristy town outside of DC. A bag of trail mix will cost you $10, cookies will be a few dollars, bread won't be cheap. Buying a few essentials to make a weekend trip easier is likely to wind up running you $50 without paying for any alcohol. That all said, this place is great. They have essential produce like apples, bananas, avocados and tomatoes. They even have some surprising local things like mushrooms. They also have local eggs, bacon and things and a very nice butcher section. They have a bunch of cookies and brownies that you can see them making and bagging in the store. Beyond that they have a killer wine and beer selection. I'm more of a beer snob than a wine snob, but the beer is on point. They have some local stuff, but also good beer from DC (Aslin) and surprising international finds (like 3 Fonteinen).

Yelp
I don't know what goes into the park ranger cookies but they are amazing. This store is such a life saver. They really have anything you could possibly need without having to make the trek to warrenton. Craig also keeps a great wine selection that is interesting while still being reasonable. Definitely a favorite of mine in the county!

Yelp
This is the only store for miles around and a nice one at that. Lots of gourmet items to include baked goods and specialty sandwiches. There's also a nice selection of scented soy candles and an excellent butcher shop with many of the beef, pork, chicken, and seafood items you'd want along with a small produce section for dinner essentials. As an added bonus, stroll or sit along the river walk across the street after your snack.

Yelp
Wish I could give this place 6 stars. Hidden gem with high quality, local produce, snacks, and other goods. I definitely recommend getting some groceries or snacks if you're staying nearby or heading to Shenandoah National Park. Friendly staff and welcoming vibes. I love it here.

Yelp
First of all, the town of Sperryville is tiny but charming, welcoming, and has a few extra-hip gems like the Sperryville Corner Store. I stopped in to use the bathroom and ended up walking out with soft butterscotch caramels, a glass bottled sparkling blood orange soda, a loaf of homemade multigrain bread, and plans to visit again for cheese/meat board supplies and who knows what else. I also observed candles, lotions, a good selection of local/unique beverages, and pre-made sandwiches that looked quite good. As far as Covid-19 measures, the door was plastered with safety reminders, and all staff were wearing masks.

Yelp
I noticed this store out of the corner of my eye a few times before I decided to stop there. The day came when I had just finished hiking Old Rag with a girlfriend and we hadn't packed lunch. We stopped at the corner store on our way back home. I grabbed their veggie burger. The sandwiches are pre-made and kept on a fridge. You just grab and go. It kind of reminds you of a convenient store. This weekend I repeated the offense of hiking Old Rag without a packed lunch so I stopped at the corner store again for my veggie burger. Humans are so predictable, aren't we? It's delightfully filling. I was so hungry that I took a few bites immediately. I also feasted on a brownie that was large, delicious and pricey. I asked the staff if they make sandwiches to order. They don't. That would've been nice, since I could have made my sandwich vegan by ordering without cheese. They sell some items here that make you think they are a micro grocer. I saw someone buying a gallon of milk. I didn't stop to verify if it was organic, unpasteurized milk from a local farmer. The prices are targeting tourists so nothing is particularly cheap.

Yelp
What a fun shop and space! It's a historic building and everyone is so nice. They have a good selection of fresh and prepared foods, plus plenty of dry goods to pick up if you're headed into Shenandoah. They also have a wood fired pizza shop and a little bar connected on either side - and both the pizza and cocktails were delicious!

Yelp
We were very impressed with the selection at this corner store. We are vegan and were very pleased and satisfied. Nice little gem in this cute little town.

Yelp
Splendid surprises abound within this throwback country store. Clean and well-lit with hardwood floors and cute rows of canned goods and sundries leads to fantastic finds Head towards the back if you're looking for fresh meats, produce, dairy or beer. There are DOZENS of different varieties of specialty beer. You can even buy them buy the single or mix and match your own six pack. There is also a wide variety of ORGANIC frozen foods, milks, cheeses and other items. Most impressive of all is the selection of LOCAL breads, cheeses, meats and produce. We bought a 16 oz. ball of smoked mozzarella for $6.99 and it was made right there in Sperryville. We paired that with a Sperryville grown Heirloom tomato, local organic basil and bread. Perfection. Bring your own cup and enjoy some fresh brewed coffee and combine that with some of the muffins or local pastries that are for sale. Eat like the locals do and eat local.

Yelp
Excellent. Great stop going from the Luray caverns back to DC. We ordered: Cookies(!) Philly sandwich (excellent, greaaaaat meat) House salad with chicken (crispy fresh chicken! Greeeeen green, my friend was very enthused about her salad) Tortilla soup (with chicken) amazing, with a lime on the side to squeeze into the broth- really good fresh soup!! Coffee- great end to a great meal Diet Coke (awesome, duh) Service: so. So. NICE. The lady and gentleman working (the owners??) are so kind, and checked in with us often enough (but not too much!) Will stop by here again when we're in the area...!!

Yelp
Friendly service and they take COVID-19 seriously. Employee was wearing a mask and there was a sign on the door directing all customers to do the same. Upscale market. We bought some fresh bread and cheese dips. Nice treat before or after a trip to Shenandoah.

Sunny B.

Yelp
Great little store to pick up premade sandwiches, charcuterie, snacks & picnic makings, wine, cup of coffee, chocolate chip cookies & brownies. Really nice, quality options.

Yelp
My very first time being in Sperryville and we stopped in this little corner store and got some fresh baked bread and some cheese. I enjoyed walking around and looking at everything. It's a beautiful store

Yelp
The Sperryville Corner Store is a great little place to stock up on grocery sundries if you're staying nearby. We were up on Skyline Drive and wanted to get some bread and cheese for our kitchenette, and were pleased at the artisanal selection as well as the whole deli counter inside. A small but decent selection of beer and wine as well, for those relaxing vacation nights.

Yelp
Coffee and breakfast sandwiches served up with farm talk and friendly peeps. Delightfully thick bacon and a front porch to sit and watch all the lost hikers drive in circles before getting up the nerve to ask directions. (Apparently a very popular ridge hike is nearby)

James N.

Yelp
Excellent Covid precautions. A little upscale, but stocked with everything you might need. Great for grabbing supplies before an Old Rag hike

Yelp
Good food. Weird layout. The men's room door is pretty ridiculous and really needs to be fixed. The note on it says to push hard and that could mean someone is inside.

Yelp
The Sperryville Corner Store is such a pleasant facility with many excellent offerings. Their meat and fish/shellfish selections are wonderful. My wife and I bought a rib eye steak this Monday and grilled it last night. It was sublime, perfect! In addition to the meat counter offerings they have a great wine/beer selection and many unusual and interesting food items. Highly recommended!

William A.

Yelp
Was out here passing through on our way to and fro Old Rag. We bought Chocolate Chip cookies peanut butter cookies, along with two very thick rib-eye steaks. The lady who helped me with the meat was kind enough to grab a bag of ice for us so that the steaks didn't get too warm on our long drive home. Very nice. The steaks were delicious, absolutely spectacular cuts and very high quality. The cookies are pretty good too. Overall I would say I wish there was some kind of Sperryville Corner Store on my corner. It's the bomb!! Only reason I give 4 instead of 5 is because I didn't try any of the produce so I can't say that it's "As good as it gets."

Yelp
I have been going here since I was old enough to walk. They got one of kind country store charm with all the trimmings. They butcher their own meat and grind their burger fresh everyday. Their seafood offerings come from the same purveyor that the Inn at Little Washington uses. They have local produce, artisan breads, gourmet items and a vast beer selection. If you can't find what you're looking for here, you don't need it.
google avatar

William B.

Yelp
Let me just say: Wow! Who would have thought you could find this place in a small town in the middle of nowhere? They have a large variety of gourmet foods and beers.

Caroline B.

Yelp
My family visited Sperryville today after several recommendations from friends. Our terrible experience began at the Sperryville Corner Store. After struggling to find parking in the lot where cars and motorcycles were parked ridiculously, we followed signs in through the back door to find the "hostess" to be seated for food. No one was there to greet us, nor was ANYONE welcoming or even remotely friendly. Upon asking a woman working in the store where to go to be seated for food, we were spoken to SO rudely, we could hardly believe it. We were spoken to as if we were stupid and unwelcome. Our bad experience continued in the restaurant and pizza place. Continue to those reviews if you would like to read more.

Yelp
Friendly people. A bit of everything. And an authentic, rustic feel. Love this place.

Yelp
If you want the best steaks, you go here. The classic butcher always has the best local meat and cuts. Then you get some Shiitake, or other mushrooms that are in season, and some local cheese.

WT C.

Yelp
The quintessential small town store- everything you need provided by people who take time to say hello. Excellent meats and homemade goods- sandwiches, hummus, salads and baked goods. Local eggs, fruits and vegetables. Unbelievable beer and wine selections too. Basic to the community and appreciated by so many passing through.

Caitlín K.

Yelp
Very cute, well-stocked little store. Lots of very high-end items for a small central VA town (even Talenti gelato, which is THE BEST!). But not a great place to stock up for a week of vacation, as a half-gallon of Florida's Natural orange juice was $6.99; a six pack of Devil's Backbone Vienna lager was $11; and a case of Miller Lite was $13. We did not even purchase any meats or other generally expensive items, and the total came out to $88 and some change.
