Like certain others of its kind, the Cornish Arms is an unpretentious little hotel that could almost go unnoticed, but is well worth a closer inspection. It's what you might call 'quirky' or 'homespun' - lots of wooden tables and brick - but the surprisingly off-beat menu transcends its appearance. The duck pate with hazelnuts, lamb raviolo and tomato and cucumber salad we had for lunch were delicious, as were the ox cheek, burrata, venison and ***** we had for dinner that night with friends. I would have preferred my venison to have been a little more cooked, and I should have asked for the gravy in a separate jug, but overall, the chef knows what he's doing and everything is as it should be. The sticky toffee pudding was different from others we've tried, but right up there with our top favourite. We like this chef's style.| The staff were friendly, helpful and efficient.| Our room (Partridge, at the back) was clean, with a spotless en suite, quiet and we weren't even troubled by the funfair across the way.| Our only quibble would be the stairs. They're a struggle for the less mobile, and we really hated the little trip-up steps that caught us unawares every time. The one to our ensuite was particularly horrible.| But that aside, we loved the Cornish Arms and intend to come again. Tavistock, too, is worth exploring.
