The Cottage - Review - Amsterdam-Oost - Amsterdam - The Infatuation

"If you’re nearing the end of your trip and want a hearty meal where you won't have to do much choosing, head to The Cottage and get the Sunday Roast. You’ll definitely need a reservation for this small slice of England on Oost where you’ll often find families splitting English breakfasts and young kids playing with the crates of toys. The roast will be heavy with meat, grilled vegetables, Yorkshire pudding, horseradish cream, and a gravy designed to shield you from the windy and rainy Amsterdam days. If however, you happen to actually be British and swear that you won’t touch any roast that’s not mum or dad’s, they also have excellent scones, pies, and homemade baked beans." - Paolo Española

Came here for the Sunday roast. It was fine but I really expected more (in both taste and quantity) given the 5 star reviews and price. All the staff were lovely though. Definitely worth reserving as it was very busy.

Wowowowowowowow I can’t believe I am saying this but this is better British food than I’ve ever had than all my time in Britain. Take that to your bank and smoke it. Jeez so the highlight: after acquiring our pints from a very jealous (but lovely!) waiter on a sunny afternoon I wanted to show off our lovely slice of Scottish culture with a cracker scotch egg. And guess what? It surprised me too. This was the best scotch egg I’ve ever had in my life, without a doubt. The breading on the egg was insanely crisp and herby, the meat on the inside was like the Scottish stuff but on steroids (it actually tasted differently to what I’m used to, but honestly it was better), and the egg in the middle was perfectly set and translucent. With the splash of piccalilli on top, which I’ve also never had before a scotch egg, this made for a genuinely mind blowing dish. I got the omelette on rye bread with some caramelised onions as well which was also absolutely cracked. The omelette was smooth and filled with mayo that made it taste all that bit smoother. I cannot recommend this place highly enough if you want to have a good impression of food that definitely does not get made this well on these isles. But come on, get haggis neeps and tatties on the menu!! Thanks for letting me charge my phone too and for the excellent service all round.

We absolutely loved it here! The pork belly sandwich was so good we had to come back again for the Sunday roast, which was delicious. It does get pretty busy, so I’d recommend booking ahead if you can!

I had the spring shepherd's pie and triple ginger cake, both were delicious! Nicely spiced and despite it being potato and a dense cake, neither were heavy on the stomach. Staff was also very friendly and the vibe was very cozy. They had newspapers available to read so I can imagine this is also a great place to have breakfast.

UNEXPECTEDLY great! Our family of four randomly stopped in and were lucky enough to get a table. The food was surprisingly delicious for what seemed to be just a neighborhood bar. Everything tasted homemade, and the menu selection was very good. We all loved the food, and the ginger cake was my favorite! (See last pic.) Chacuterie and pot pie were delicious too. Service was excellent. Everyone friendly. Woukd come back in a heartbeat. Highly recommend.

I liked that place so much. Delicious food and service was very nice. I don’t like that much small cups for coffee but it just my thing! All good! Recommended 100%

The Cottage has a great neighborhood feel. Coming in on a winter Friday night, it was cozy and busy but not too loud or packed and I was able to sit immediately. I choose a few menu items: the anchovy butter toast, the steak & ale pie, and the chocolate fudge slice for dessert. Everything was excellent but the steak & ale pie accompanied by a sharp mustard was the stand-out dish here. The service was friendly and attentive. As someone who loves foxes, the fox theme was charming - make sure to look at all the postcards behind the bar. The price is very reasonable overall. I was back on Wednesday the following week for brunch and they were almost full even in the middle of the week. This time I had the eggs of the day and the scone. The clotted cream and orange-pumpkin-cardamom jam with the scone stood out to me and my latte was excellent as well. This is worth heading to Oostport for a casual, delicious, and cozy meal any time.

Yelp
We came to The Cottage for dinner on the last night of our visit to Amsterdam, and it ended up being one of our favorite meals of the entire trip! It is so incredibly cozy inside, and you will want to stay and hang out for hours. The service was great, and they have a very well-curated menu including plenty of vegetarian options. We each went with one of their pot pies and they were amazing. I am still dreaming about the mushroom one! Don't miss out on the triple ginger cake for dessert - it is an absolute must. I wish we lived closer so that we could come all the time! Definitely be sure to make a reservation, as I can see how it could get busy inside, especially on a weekend.

Yelp
Wonderful food. The salad greens and dressing were so good! And the shepherds pie hit the spot for comfort food!

Yelp
Food was so delicious. There were so many elements in each of our dishes that just complimented each other so well. Very reasonably priced for the complexity of dishes and the portion sizes. We sat outside and it was lovely, and the interior looked very cool as well. The service was a bit slow, but counted where it mattered. One of the servers traded recommendations for other Amsterdam sites and restaurants with us which was very appreciated!

Yelp
Our first dinner in Amsterdam while on our honeymoon and it was amazing!!! My husband and I were walking down the street and lady passing by on a bicycle saw that we were trying to figure out where to go eat. She quickly told us to go try this place as. she works here and the food is great. So here we came! From the minute we walked we were greeted with the most exceptional service. Every employee in here was so helpful and kind. We were immediately seated with water, potato chips to snack on and the menus to browse. We settled on trying the Scotch Egg as an appetizer, as well as the shepherds pie and Duck Leg confit for our entrées. We also ordered two of their typical dark ales on tap which were delicious. The scotch egg was to die for. My husband and I fought over every last bite. Both of our entrées were amazing as well. My husband loved his shepherds pie, and my duck leg confit was delicious. Our entrées were so hearty that we were not able to finish them as we were stuffed. I highly recommend checking this place out if you are visiting this area. You will not be disappointed!

Yelp
So delicious and the most kind and friendly staff. We had a larger group and they were so accommodating. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting!

Yelp
Sunday's roast pork special was real comfort food, especially with potatoes, onion, snap peas, turnips with gravy. Delicious. Sales also were fresh, with array of veggies. Do not miss the ginger cake with warm toffee, perfect finish!

Yelp
Outstanding restaurant in Amsterdam Oust with better menu selections & lively neighborhood feel. You feel welcome and like you live in the neighborhood when you walk into The Cottage.

Yelp
For breakfast, the eggs and jams are great, as is the yoghurt. My kids managed to eat salmon and eggs with parsley and green onions mixed in, which would be near impossible at home for the kids who want Sprite and candy bars for breakfast. The coffees tasted fresh and light too, and the scones were perfect. We'll be back, and I'm looking forward to trying the Sunday roast when it's lamb, and also the beef, and the pork too. Later: We stop by here in the mornings for coffee and scones frequently. They're always warm from the oven. The coffee is good and the staff is friendly and warm, like the scones.

Yelp
This place is indescribable - everything about it is perfect. The atmosphere is cozy and relaxed. There's cute little spots in the Window, all seats are comfy and make you feel right at home. My server was incredibly friendly, you can tell she really loves doing what she does. The food, oh my the food. I've had the Cheddar onion chili Omelett, it was out of this world. Absolutely perfect. It was a great combination of flavors and it was perfectly executed, see pictures. The scone of the day was Cinnamon. It was served fresh, still warm and crunch. Alongside I got homemade jam, both flavors were ridiculously good! If I were a local, I'd be here every weekend. If you're in the area, you have to check this place out! PS I got an English menu on request, make sure you ask for one.

Yelp
This quaint little corner cafe made my heart happy. Cozy and charming inside, and nice outdoor seating area as well. The service was so warm and friendly it killed me, and the coffee and food were equally as good. I got the mushroom scrambled eggs with cheese added and a cinnamon scone. The mushrooms in my eggs were probably the best mushrooms I've ever had. Cooked and seasoned perfectly. The cinnamon scone was so good... not overly sweet, perfect scone texture with added crunch from nuts, and nice subtle cinnamon flavor. The server brought us a couple jars of homemade jams to try with the scones and they were both very good - my favorite was the yellow jam, which had zucchini and orange in it. So unique. Others at our table got the omelet with peppers, full cottage breakfast, sweet cottage breakfast, and steak sandwich. Everyone was happy with their food. They had a variety of homemade desserts at the counter that looked wonderful as well, although we were too stuffed to try any. Do not pass this place by if you are in the area. This is a neighborhood gem and probably my favorite place we dined in the city.

Amazing service. Terrific food. Will definitely come here any time we are in Amsterdam.

Yelp
Cozy homey spot. More locals less tourists. Neighborhood vibe and always busy so make a reservation. Bar seating, cozy small window seating and a few larger tables with board games to play while you wait. Very good veggie cottage pie.. with lentils and potatoes, cheese. The cod (was a special once) was super tasty even my toddler ate it! I want to go back and try more dishes!

Yelp
Lovely people and food. I was already convinced when the waitress brought us a waterbottle right after we sat down. 10/10 would recommend.

Yelp
Great place for lunch or dinner. I have heard their Sunday roasts are the bomb also. We had both sets of sausage rolls and they really hit the spot. Super friendly service, great drinks menu and hearty food menu. I can imagine this place will be just as good in winter as it is in summer

Yelp
During our week long trip to Amsterdam, The cottage was our favorite food find. We stumbled across this quaint restaurant on a Wednesday evening. It is set back a bit from the busy street and has an English influence. The staff is the friendliest we came accross in Amsterdam! Always with a smile they treat their customers more like friends. If you are still with me- let's talk food! From the bottle of wine to the cheese cake (steak and mussles for dinner) everything was excellent. We loved it so much we returned on Friday morning to try breakfast. The scone served with clotted cream and jam or preserves was perfection, the coffee hot and strong! My companion had the full cottage breakfast, which consisted of beautifully cooked eggs, sausage, bacon, mushrooms, baked beans and tomatoes. If you can believe it we were back again for dinner! Being a Friday night, we had to wait for a table, but well worth it! This time my companion had the steak and I enjoyed a nice chicken pie. Dessert consisted of an encore of cheese cake (orange zest flavor in the cake, and blackberry jam like topping- yummm) and a piece of triple ginger cake! Full tummy and very satisfied. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Great triple ginger toffee cake and English breakfasts. Friendly Dutch owners who care about quality. Open from early until late.

Yelp
Wow wow and wow again!! Thanks guys for wonderful service and a fantastic meal! The Sunday roast was just spot on. Perfect in fact! We will definitely be back to have a go at the al a carte menu which I was drooling over.. don't even start me on the desserts, the triple ginger, no words

Yelp
Great cafe/restaurant with very well done simple breakfasts and fantastic roasts. Always excellent service, best spot in the neighborhood.
