Fun to walk around and see the old architecture of the building. However the shops were nothing I was truly interested in purchasing from. Some where very overpriced. $400 sweatshirts & $600 overalls. No thanks. Lots of shops closed on a Tuesday mid-day. We found that a little odd. Might come back for the restaurants one day. Otherwise it was a spot I can say I went to & will probably not bother returning to.

I was traveling in Wilmington and had an opportunity to stop in for a haircut. I had a hard time getting there after work, but they happily agreed to stay late for me. Got a great haircut and will absolutely go back again.

The Cotton Exchange in Wilmington is a wonderful place to explore, shop, and soak in local charm. The historic buildings are beautifully preserved and full of character, making it a unique and enjoyable spot to walk around. There’s a great mix of local boutiques, specialty shops, and eateries, so there’s something for everyone. The atmosphere is lively yet relaxed, and it’s perfectly located near the riverwalk, making it an easy stop while sightseeing downtown. A must-visit destination that truly captures the spirit of Wilmington!

Great spot for checking out several fun shops. Quaint shopping experience, lots of variety, plus some dining options.

Love all the little shops within the Cotton Exchange! There is everything from hot sauces-my son purchased a few bottles and they are fabulous. The gentleman that helped my son(I think he was the owner)was super knowledgeable about the sauces in the shop. He asked my son what kind of flavors he liked and made suggestions for him. You can have samples of the different sauces which is very nice. They are super delicious! You can also find eclectic jewelry and clothing to flavored olive oil and vinegars. I have purchased different Balsamic vinegars at The Olive Shop and we love them so much! They also offer sample flavors which is so great to be able to decide based on the actual flavor profile and not just imagine what they will taste like😋 While we were there, I purchased a very pretty ring at Gems4U, a nice little shop of handmade one of a kind pieces. I have several necklace pieces like the gems in this shop and I love them all, so when I saw the ones here, I had to check them out. There are beautiful wire wrapped pendants with all kinds of gems, sea glass and fossils. There are gem beaded bracelets and cool rings. My son got a cool snake ring gift for his girlfriend and I purchased this purple heart 💜 ring for myself. Make sure to stop at this shop and see Mary who creates the most beautiful pieces, she is super sweet and very knowledgeable about her products. Very happy with our purchases! I just wanted to buy them all🥰😍Don't miss out on visiting The Cotton Exchange👍🏻

Google
Shops were okay. My favorite part was seeing the postings of their own walk of fame! Poets and politicians... sports starts and movie stars with back ground info on each!

Google
I've visited The Cotton Exchange off and on for most of my life. I've always enjoyed visiting the variety of shops and restaurants, locally owned. While I still enjoyed the atmosphere this last trip, some of the stores I used to really enjoy were no longer there. There are still good options, but as with time, all things change. Still a unique place to visit at least once with Paddy's Hollow always being my go-to dining option and Top Toad the shopping option (with Ladybug the "guard" dog!)

Jay H.

Google
Very nice shops in a fun atmosphere. We shipped for about 2 hours and then had lunch there (several good options available). The ships are specialty with jewelry and arts, while mostly affordable. Definitely worth your time when you you are out and about exploring Wilmington.

Yelp
The Cotton Exchange looks pretty unassuming from the outside, but it is enormous inside with a large variety of shops and restaurants inside. The building inside is beautiful with high arches and old brick. The signs inside the walkways are posted frequently so you can easily navigate. Cute little shops and food options are available, so you have many options once you enter. Entrances are located at both ends of the building so fairly quick to navigate through and see what catches your interest. Worth a stop to check this spot out if you're nearby.

Yelp
A quaint area to shop near the river. The cotton exchange history and old buildings are a favorite of mine to visit. The shops and restaurants frequently change and it's always nice to see the new shops. Shop owners are very friendly and hospitable. There are restaurants, cafes, clothing, jewelry, paper, furniture shops and more. We always find something new and intriguing. I have brought stroller through and it's not very easy to navigate on wheels. Expected tourist area prices.

Yelp
The Cotton Exchange is located in Downtown Wilmington near the Riverwalk and offers free parking in their lot with a validated ticket. The Cotton Exchange has a variety of small businesses, some are restaurants, others are services and boutique stores. I think there are 30 businesses on the three levels. I like that they have signs so you can easily find the places you want to stop at. I tend to stop at the historic property each time I am in Downtown Wilmington. I like that the 1884 flour mill was repurposed for cotton exports in the 1920s and in 1975 became home to the shops and restaurants.

Yelp
Very cool place! All the little shops and restaurants are very eclectic and adorable. The only bad thing was the parking. It's pay to park but there is no price posted anywhere. We parked for 3 hours and 10 minutes and were charged $28!! Ridiculous!! Save yourself some money and park in the parking garage across the street, 3 hours would have been $6 there.
google avatar

Yelp
This sweet collection of stores and restaurants is located downtown near the river walk but not on it. The building is clearly marked so easy to walk from the river. There are many different kinds of shops, everything from a nail salon to clothing. I enjoyed going from level to level in this old but interesting building full of history.
google avatar

Christine F.

Yelp
Such a neat collection of shops and restaurants. Parking is super convenient for shopping there. There is something for just about everyone. Loved just wandering through them , not looking for anything in particular. I've heard that the German Restaurant is good , can't wait to try that soon. Enclosed are some pictures on the walls of neat history of the Cotton Exchange.

Yelp
Came to visit mid-December 2023 on a Tuesday. I think I need to try this place again maybe during the peak season. The stores are quiet and there weren't many store options that I was particular interested in. The location is a neat historic site to visit though. I appreciated the markers that gave info about what existed there originally. They building itself is beautifully preserved. I appreciate Wilmington preserving a historical place for everyone to appreciate. I think I'll have to come by here another day and time. Try to get street parking if possible. The meter police is walking by. Download the app and pay for your parking on the app to keep track of your time.

Yelp
This was our first stop of vacation! My boyfriend really loved this place when he was in college and I can see why! Their salad was delicious and he really enjoyed his burger. Has an old Irish pub feel with your typical wooden bar. The service was just as great as the food!

Yelp
Wilmington Cotton Exchange- We visited Carolina Beach and my husband wanted me to experience the Cotton Exchange. We were nrvous too many things would be closed, but we drove up to Wilmington anyway and I'm so glad we did! Plenty of stores were open and it was really the best day. The cotton exchange is such a unique experience and a very cool, charming complex. No elevators, right? Make your way through the 8 buildings and different levels and enjoy a fun day of shopping at exclusive boutiques. I love that they don't have franchise stores or restaurants in the Cotton exchange. We picked up a beautiful photograph print, some gourmet olives and vinegars, a few other handmade artisan crafts for gifts, and a beach cover up. I love the history of the building and love that restoration attempts have kept that antiquity in tact. I wish the book store had been open, though! I don't think they have a page yet, so I'll review here... after shopping and dinner, we decided to book the Escape Room on the lower level. It was the most immersive, clever escape room experience we've ever done. I highly recommend the Forgotten room, it was a real treat!

Yelp
Old historic warehouse turned into shopping venue. Many different stores to wander around in and look at frivolous necessities. Shoes, vintage clothing, stationary, art, and so much more. They have a parking lot that you pay for minutes but can get up to 3 hours free by validating your ticket at one of the shops inside.
google avatar

Iwona A.

Yelp
The whole place felt kind of old and not the cleanest. The options of stores were also not my style. But good place to stop by because of the free parking if you eat or buy something here. The food options are better than the clothing options.
google avatar

Kenzie H.

Yelp
I absolutely love doing little photo shoots and am always looking for new places to go. This place has a bunch of little shops and even a nail salon but our purpose was pics! My sister insisted that I would love it and I did!

Yelp
This is one of my favorite tourist spots in Wilmington. They have fabulous shops and restaurants. It is so unique and unlike any other place I have ever been. We spent hours here today. I love how parking is free when you are shipping/eating here. They have a few restrooms open to the public if needed, too. I love the set up and the courtyard in the middle. Around every corner is a surprise! This is a great place to eat at if you are going to a show at Wilson Center.

Katie G.

Yelp
Lots of fun little shops and plaques that talk about historical events in and around Wilmington. It goes through a building with a little courtyard area. Super fun and will definitely visit again.

Yelp
Awesome place for shopping, eating, and hanging out. Located in downtown Historic Wilmington, the Cotton Exchange definitely has history and character. The small business shops that make up the Cotton Exchange are unique and add even more character to the shopping experience. I did the majority of my Christmas shopping the weekend I was in town for the inaugural Half Marathon race (early December), but I was glad this location was super walk-able from my hotel. It definitely made for an interesting check-out process since it felt like I left with 3 times as much mass and shopping bags when I was ready to head home. There's a little something for everyone here, coffee shop, artwork, NC local shop, t-shirts, memorabilia, toys, and even a shop for the four-legged family members. Multiple levels... it can be a little bit of a maze, but I really like how they kept the integrity of the building and the shop owners really settle into their own spaces to offer their products. I didn't really see any elevators, so watch your step on the stairs and narrow corridors. In the main staircase there was one of those electric chairs on the side for people that can't do stairs so I'm sure the exchange is in compliance for handicap standards.

Denise H.

Yelp
There were a lot of shops in the building. We strolled around here while it was raining.

Yelp
I love it when cities keep old buildings like this and repurpose it for shopping and dining. This is a must see when in downtown WIlmington. Lots of shops and some decent food places. Free parking as well, which is hard to come by in downtown.
google avatar

Jessica G.

Yelp
We visited downtown Wilmington for the day, and the Cotton Exchange was definitely on our agenda. This used to be an old cotton gin and is now a place full of excitement. They have made this multi-level historic building into a place filled with local vendors, shops, a coffee shop, and restaurant. I return to the Cotton Exchange every time I'm in the area. The prices are reasonable, and you're supporting local artists and farmers. Everything is hand-crafted and has a special "local" feel to it. This place is a must see!
google avatar

Casie Rachelle R.

Yelp
This is a great place and a must to visit while visiting Wilmington. There are multiple levels with plenty of stores and variety for all ages and types. I loved the vintage appeal with both new and old items. Lots of wind chimes and other decorations for your home. All the stores where open and clean. Only a few had bathrooms available, so just a heads up. There are a couple of restaurants in the building, but I did not try any since I had just eaten down the street. I was going to give 4 stars, but the available parking was such a bonus I went five! Seriously, a huge parking lot available. I am not sure how packed it gets on the weekends, but during the week days ample parking and access to stores is very easy!

Yelp
Cotton Exchange in Wilmington has a great selection of stores, restaurants and historic memorabilia near the Riverfront. There are about three levels and you end up on Front Street. I liked the Pure Nature shop for smoothies and enjoyed the spice shop and other little boutiques.
google avatar

Chris L.

Yelp
This is a great place to walk around and checkout wilmington. This particular shopping center is very interesting in that it's integrated into a historic building. It's a good place to stop to shop. They have a potpurri of different stores. If you're on vacation they have one of those tacky souvenir shops as well. It's located in a strange spot and below from the other stores. Also, you can park here for free as long as you bring your receipt to be validated.
google avatar

Mike W.

Yelp
Neat little historic tourist must see. Overpriced local stores of course, but some of it is unique handcrafted stuff. Lots if hippie things. The courtyard area outside by the restaurant is my favorite part.
google avatar

Bannon P.

Yelp
The Cotton Exchange shopping center was a great spot to walk around if you want some AC plus cool products. The vendors were super nice and had a huge assortment of items. The prices were a bit high though but overall a pretty good experience.

Megan M.

Yelp
Cute place but don't forget your parking pass... $25 no matter how long you've stayed. Oops!
google avatar

Raquel W.

Yelp
Cute cute cute. If you're into perusing some gift shops and local businesses, this is the place. Also, they have public bathrooms which are hard to find.
google avatar

Ashley U.

Yelp
I love the stores down here but unfortunately it isn't handicap or elderly friendly. I had such a hard time maneuvering around with my senior patient who needs a wheelchair. We enjoyed the stores but sadly had to fold up her chair and walk up the stairs, this was very inconvenient and hard on older people.
google avatar

Denise D.

Yelp
Something for everyone. Small merchants are all very warm and welcoming in the downtown historic district in Wilmington, NC. Plenty of walking to consider with the heat or if traveling with someone that might have mobility issues. The downtown shops have unique hours most are not open until 11am. Something to consider when looking for parking and to grab a cup of joe and relax. Luckily, there is a parking lot for the Cotton Exchange. The meter attendants monitor the street parking. Who carries quarters nowadays? The meters should be able to take $1 bills, luckily for tourists and merchants they can pay via smartphone.

Yelp
ATTENTION ALL PROFESSIONAL WINDOW SHOPPERS!!! Built within abandoned roaring 20's cotton warehouses and processing buildings, the Cotton Exchange is a mall of an eclectic assortment of medium to high end stores that offer restaurants, clothing, jewelry, books, kites, gourmet food stuffs, candy, art, shoes, etc. This is not a South Coast Plaza sized mall, but only about 32 stores nestled in downtown Historic Wilmington. Jaded mall goers will find this a refreshing break from the monotony of todays super this and that stores. Each store is unique and not one is a chain. Highly recommended if you are anywhere close to this area.......and if you like to shop.
google avatar

Tom D.

Yelp
This place is simply amazing AND there IS FREE parking in the back - so long as you are shopping at the Exchange and I actually think there are hundreds of stores there! Well to be honest - it only feels like that many because there were so many interesting little shops to find exactly what one needs or wants! Plan on spending some time browsing around - the people in every one of the stores are friendly - selections are great, pricing is good and again - free parking in the back (free parking at the lower/river front side)!
google avatar

Tom D.

Yelp
This is a really cool historic Wilmington place inside this big brick building as a whole lot of stores they're like holes in the wall ... There's everything you can imagine from novelty to clothes to jewelry and whatever you want. Great for gifts also just to walk around with all the brick wall is so cool
google avatar

Rebecca C.

Yelp
A wonderful, charming place to shop for those who love shopping as well as those who abhor it. Full of history in what looks like an old warehouse boasting lots of local shops with unique stuff one doesn't see anywhere else, at solid prices. Easily stayed here shopping for hours...and the restaurants in the Cotton Exchange are tempting as well. What's extra nice are the shops with food and food gifts, have lots of samples for the buyers as well as the lookie loos. They were advertising alot of events, such as Halloween, which seem interesting. I would love having a shopping area at home like the Cotton Exchange in WIlmington!!
google avatar

Rachel H.

Yelp
Lots of small shops, cute boutiques and cafes. Perfect for an afternoon with friends.
google avatar

Noelle H.

Yelp
I love this place. It's historic, rustic (like a hobbit town) with all kinds of stores, restaurants, and even a nice pub or two. I've been to the 'Cotton Exchange' a dozen times, and I find something new and interesting during each visit. Best of all, it's in Downtown Wilmington and right by the boardwalk. I love Downtown Wilmington!
google avatar

Sara R.

Yelp
This has always been a great place to accomplish a lot of shopping in one place (too hot to troll Front St? This place is for you). Stand-outs include TS Brown's Jewelry shop and Cape Fear Fine Craft cooperative, but there's also more than one spot to scoop up a not SO touristy momento if needed. There's also a reliably clean public restroom. And home-made ice cream. Yum.

Lisa Q.

Yelp
We had breakfast at The Basics .. it was good.. I liked that they took extra measures with hand sanitizer when we came in and had us wait outside to be greeted and they wore masks as well as reminded us customers to please do the same while moving about the restaurant. I ordered the 2 egg breakfast with the blueberry oatmeal pancakes and sausage patties for my sides! The pancakes were so good I wished it had more blueberries though.. they were so big I shared them with my sister and mom! I could only eat one .. the fried green tomatoes my sister ordered were good too! We only visited a few shops and we wanted to explore more but were short on time.. got some great little souvenirs to remember our trip I purchased some incense from India in one shop and sea glass beads and some cute charms in another! We loved the vibe of the place and the prices were not too bad either.. there's something for everyone! We plan to definitely go back and explore the rest of the shops and restaurants soon! It's definitely a great place to check out! Oh and the bathrooms were clean! For an older building I was impressed with the bathrooms in the shopping area.. not so much in the Basics Restaurant's! FYI
google avatar

Gregory H.

Yelp
While I agree with SOME of the sentiment about this being a tourist trap, that doesn't take away from the quality of some of the shops and restaurants here. While I wouldn't want to do the bulk of my shopping at the Cotton Exchange, it's a terrific place to browse, have a meal, have a cup of joe, maybe grab a t-shirt and get a few pictures. There are some articles and historical blurbs about he building and how it came to be what it is today.
google avatar

Nicole R.

Yelp
Nice place to shop. We came here on a rainy day. A cross between touristy and nice local artisans. Free parking for 2 hours if you purchase something here that it more than $7 (ask for validation) after that it is $3.50 per hour. You can also read up on the history of the building while you shop. Nice walking distance to the riverfront and the rest of downtown shops.
google avatar

Ashton M.

Yelp
The Cotton Exchange was a short walk away from our downtown Wilmington VRBO, although they have plenty of free parking in a lot on the river side. I enjoyed browsing in many of the shops inside.
google avatar

Matty B.

Yelp
The Cotton Exchange is a nice jumping off spot to any stroll through downtown Wilmington. It is easily accessible with plenty of parking out back, features over 20 stores, and is a stone's throw from the river. The best part of the Cotton Exchange, however, is clearly the history of the buildings that comprise this now mini shopping mecca. I believe the buildings were at one point a flour mill and then later served as the cotton production center of Wilmington. As such, all the buildings are connected by old school staircases and walkways with open courtyards abounding as well. This space just oozes a romantic type of history that is difficult not to get lost in as you stroll about. Nowadays you'll find jewelry stores, art houses, restaurants, a coffee spot, a bookstore, a Celtic shop, and a super touristy shop all housed within these rustic walls. The Cotton Exchange is always worth a visit, just be sure to move your car after hours or you will indeed be ticketed! (I learned that the hard way)
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
I really enjoyed visiting these shops. Some of them left a little to be desired, but others - namely Two Sisters Bookery - were the kind of local, downtown shops I like to support. The folks were friendly, the prices were reasonable, and the environment was truly unique. The free parking was a welcome bonus, as finding decent parking in downtown settings can be frustrating at the best of times.
google avatar

Matt M.

Yelp
Nice place to walk around. Has a lot of stores to check out with a lot of good things in them. A few tourist type stores if you're visiting and want stuff for home. Jewelry stores, places to eat, places to shop it has it all. My favorite store is Fire & Spice Gourmet Kitchen Shoppe. They have a TON of different hot sauce. I go every time I'm at cotton exchange and pick out 2-3 new bottles I've never tried before.

Sherry B.

Yelp
The shops and historical buildings are were wonderful. The maintenance of the outdoor walkways and parking lot landscape need much attention to enhance this beautiful spot on the map. The inner court yard had leaves, branches and litter in the plant beds. The parking lot islands are full of weeds and the shrubs and trees need pruning. A lamppost had been damaged in the parking lot with the glass broken into pots and on the lot.
google avatar

Andrew P.

Yelp
Definitely worth the visit if your a tourist in wilmington. Very historic and the shops are nice. Very nice people in all the individual shops as well. Best way I can describe the Cotton Exchange is a indoor marketplace with some outdoor accessibility to shops as well. Also, they are very pet-friendly, which is nice.
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
The Cotton Exchange is an interesting variety of local shops and restaurants accessible both inside and outside of an old building in downtown Wilmington. There is local art, crafts, books, cards, footwear, clothing, jewelry and more. It was enjoyable to browse through the shops, find unique gifts and enjoy a different type of mall.

Venus L.

Yelp
Very unique place! Love the history. Small shops with lots of variety.something for everyone.
google avatar

Laura F.

Yelp
The Cotton Exchange consists of several touristy stores (t-shirts, post cards, magnets, etc.), jewelry shops, and other random stores. I like to walk around here and mostly window shop or make small purchases. The stores weave around an old building through hallways and stairways and is both inside and outside. All the store owners/staff are always friendly, which is encouraging to come back. There are two main entrances, one from Front Street or one from the Cotton Exchange parking lot. The best place to stop for souvenirs when visiting downtown Wilmington.
google avatar

Mike D.

Yelp
Funky little eclectic retro shopping experience on Front Street in Wilmington. The dozen or so shops are certainly unique; ranging from a spice shop, vintage clothing and framing to Celtic arts. Unfortunately over priced but a good way to spend a couple of hours browsing
google avatar

Susan P.

Yelp
Free parking at the lower/river front side. great iced coffee at the Java Dog; made three Very one of a kind purchases at Elizabeths (womens); "the scoop" was so-so (expect a 'light fare serving size); & i'd recommend hitting up the cotton exchange on a friday prior to its 5 pm closing, then stretch out the hour at CHOPS (great deli within the block-we hit up yesterday), followed by the city's free summer band series starting at 6:00.
google avatar

Abby A.

Yelp
A really cute place for shopping, and a great way to keep an old building alive. Some of the shops are kinda random but a lot of them are really nice!
