The Eccentric Inns of England

"The Crown, in Amersham, is probably best known for its cameo in Four Weddings and a Funeral, but a combination of convenience, fine hospitality and thoughtful cuisine has kept it relevant." - Mark Fedeli

This is a great hotel and we loved our stay. Room 105 is excellent.|If you like chain hotels where everything is predictable, this is not the place for you. However, if you like a unique, old hotel in a beautiful English village you will love this. When I say old, I mean the age of the buildings. The place is modernised and is very comfortable. Breakfast is very good with lots of choices.|My only suggestion to the hotel is that they provide guests with a list of where they can eat on Sunday evenings when the hotel restaurant is close. (Zaza next door is very good, and 2-3 of the pubs serve food but they stop serving relatively early).

The Crown is a delightful hotel with the friendliest staff I have encountered in my travels. We were quite needy of help during our short stay, but front of house staff were unphased! Ready to help, and very obliging. The breakfasts were lovely, and the serving staff in the restaurant excellent. The star of the visit was the hotel itself and it's setting. Beautifully kept gardens and areas to sit out, in lovely Old Amersham. Highly recommended.

Very friendly staff who could not have been more helpful. Quirky old buildings that creak as you would expect them to, but gave the place charm that you don't get in chain hotels. Good location, and great breakfast - would recommend.

Very charming and cosy atmosphere at this hotel. It is very clean has friendly staff and offers an excellent breakfast. Some rooms are small and in Winter it might be cold due to gaps in the old windows.

Crown Hotel in old Amersham is a lovely old building, very nicely situated in the centre of the town, which is charming. The hotel staff are excellent, and the room bed linen and bathroom towels were clean and bright. However, we would certainly not recommend Room #1, as it is drab and gloomy in the extreme, painted in prison cell grey, with a complete absence of any pictures or colour changes on the walls. The stair carpet leading up to the bathroom was horribly stained with something unpleasant to look at, and in our opinion the room rate at over £230 did not represent good value for money at all. That cost did include breakfast and on site parking, which was good, but overall it was very overpriced for what it was. We were very disappointed with it.

Historical , pretty little town.||Stayed over after late flight, so late check in was ideal. Good breakfast and a lovely courtyard.Only downside we were right in front of hotel, quite noisy therefore recommend staying at back of hotel in more modern rooms.||

Prime location right in front of the Church and next to Old Market. With plenty of free parking onsite. Check in was fast and easy. Booked a standard main bedroom - room was nice and clean, but because of the wooden beams, you can hear every step and the floor creaking especially at night we wore noise cancelling earplugs and were still woken up with noise coming from the level above us. Breakfast was great portion and very nice. Highly recommend

Very enjoyable overnight stay. Our room was comfortable and fairly quiet, the staff are friendly and attentive, both the evening meal and breakfast well cooked and flavoursome. Old Amersham is set in lovely surrounds, with a few pubs, restaurants and artisan shops along the high street. The hotel is also dog friendly and the town and surrounding countryside a good place for walks.

Yelp
Loved my room with its superbly firm bed, massive walk-in shower and lots of creature comforts. Would have preferred a room not directly above the street but honestly it wasn't a big deal (Amersham's a pretty sleepy place on a Saturday morning - not a lot of traffic related bustle outside). Brekkie was good and ample. Maybe if I would have had to pay for it separately, I wouldn't have been as happy with it, but as it was part of my b-n-b package I was pleased. However, I would be remiss if I failed to mention the spaced out and incredibly nonchalant attitude of one of the breakfast servers. "Yeah man" probably isn't the best way to answer the question of "May I have some more coffee". For the most part this 'dude' was more amusing than anything but he didn't have any clue how to do his job and seemed to just stand around with a dazed look on his face (I kinda think he might have been stoned). Personally, I didn't care all that much but I could see how older clientele (whom I think make up the majority of guests here) might have been incredibly irked. Dopey waiter aside, I'd stay at the Crown again. I found Amersham a pleasant village within easy reach of London (it's even on the Metropolitan Line!). Staff were friendly, the inn had a quaint feel to it and as I mentioned at the start of this review, I really liked the room.

Yelp
We spent a weekend afternoon late lunch here after a long hike in the countryside. It was a very cold day and the Inn was welcoming. The decor was a combination of modern touches (minimalist furniture) mixed with the very old: wooden beams and floors, low ceilings, pewter bread plates. The food was very good, my only complaint is that portions were extremely small. After walking for nearly 3.5 hours, my friends and I were extremely hungry, and the portions just did not satisfy. Perhaps the portions are larger at dinner. Also, the staff seemed a bit uninterested and service was a bit slow. The menu wasn't large, but had enough choices. My pork loin was perfect, tender and moist. My friend had Venison three ways which was lovely as well. The appetizers of beetroot and blue cheese salad, while excellent, as I said, were on the small side. Everyone enjoyed their desserts of rhubarb crumble, sticky toffee pudding and lemon posset. The boys also enjoyed some rather nice real ale (can't recall the name, but then again the waiter didn't know it either) and I had some good Australian Shiraz. The place being very old, the dining room was rather drafty. They lit the fireplaces just as we were leaving. Although the food was good, I think it was a bit overpriced for the portion sizes. I would recommend going here for a few drinks in a beautiful setting. And possibly for a bite to eat, but don't expect a pub lunch, it's not very hearty.

Yelp
Wonderfully warm and welcoming bar with local ales a roaring fire and original beams.
