The Crumb - Review - Bernal Heights - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"The Crumb is a Bernal Heights newcomer doing seasonal small plates and other tapas-style dishes. The menu covers a lot of ground—you can get soba alongside fish tacos, or caviar-topped blini before rounding things out with beet borscht. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

We went to The Crumb for Mother’s Day brunch and the food and ambience was exactly what we hoped for — intimate, tasteful, special. They have outdoor seating in the sunny rear patio, or indoor seating street-side. The waiter was helpful and efficient. And they had a jazz duo playing on the patio. When our order arrived, the deviled eggs were delicious, blintzes with salmon and caviar were a royal treat, and the carrot cake (house specialty) was decadent. This was a San Francisco Mother’s Day brunch gem — but honestly we’d come back to enjoy a delightful morning or afternoon meal any day.

The Crumb is not a large restaurant, but the ambiance makes you feel like at home with tastefully decorated walls with personal photos and some pieces of art. We came here for my wife's birthday and it was the most amazing experience we ever had. The bartender mixed some tasty drinks with perfect decorations. We ordered Chimichurri Steak Crostini and Truffle Hamachii Crudo for appetizers. They just melted in the mouth. For the main course we got gold-plated steaks with mashed celery root. Steaks were cooked to perfection and I've never tried celery root before and it was excellent. And top it off, we got "Medovik" and carrot cakes for the grand finale, which were simply divine!

I recently had the pleasure of dining at The Crumb, a place I had been eagerly anticipating for quite some time, and it did not disappoint! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was warm and inviting. Our server, Sarah, was exceptionally attentive and made sure we felt right at home. The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the Truffle Hamachi Crudo—absolutely the best I've ever tasted! It was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. We also ordered the beet arugula salad, which was nothing short of a masterpiece; the combination of textures and flavors was simply top-notch. Overall, my experience at The Crumb was fantastic. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a memorable meal, and I can't wait to return for another delightful visit!

So we went to dinner at the crumb on Saturday night around 7:00 p.m. . The restaurant was busy but not overcrowded and because the space was a little more intimate the ambiance of the restaurant was very cozy. I also enjoy the fact that there was art on the walls from local artists that you could purchase if you found something quite appealing. I want to give a huge huge huge shout out to our server Sarah who took care of us splendidly the entire night. Her and my friend bonded over them both being midwesterners and we all had a hoot together laughing and just chatting about different things. Sarah was very kind in giving a suggestions regarding what we potentially could eat and knew the menu quite well whenever we had a question about one of the items. For drinks we ended up getting the Pink Pony Club, the Bailando, and the Halo. All three of these drinks were made with either wine or beer and not going to lie I was a little hesitant as to what the taste would be and we were all floored. Every single drink had its own burst of flavor, it was very complex, but also light on the palate where it was extremely refreshing. Greatly recommend all of them. For dinner we started off with the Deviled eggs, a kale Caesar salad followed by the soba noodles, Peruvian chicken wings, and lastly the portabella sliders. The deviled eggs had a beautiful hint of truffle which really made the filling quite delicate but both at the same time. The Kale Caesar salad was very fresh, the dressing it had was not overly done, and the fresh parmesan was tasted throughout every bite. I really enjoyed the soba noodles because the sauce it had had the perfect balance of sweet and spicy. I call this out because both my husband and my best friend are not fans of spicy and they really enjoyed this dish. It was actually finished by all of us. The other dish we had were the Peruvian chicken wings that had an amazing taste on their own and did not require the dipping sauce that came with it. The sauce did enhance the flavor. The one call out for this dish, as it is more of a personal preference, is I would have liked the chicken wings just a little more crispy. We ended the night with these brownies that were a amazing blend of a chocolate torte and brownie combined. We got two orders the first one had the brownie melting in your mouth the second order was a little bit more decadent but still not overpowering with the chocolate. We gave a big thank you to the chef before she left and we are so looking forward to coming back and trying out the other dishes on the menu.

The Crumb is a charming new spot in the city, offering a cozy atmosphere and attentive service. The menu features seasonal dishes with a modern twist, including standout items like Chimichurri Steak Crostini appetizer! Reasonable prices and good cocktails make it perfect for dining. Definitely worth a visit!

Had an incredible dinner here for my mom’s birthday - the food was so good it was gone before I could take any pictures! The four of us shared two orders of black cod tacos, khachipuri (solo), and beef short ribs (so tender!) and everything was incredible! The Teenage Dream cocktail was also amazing 😋 Wonderful service as well, it really made my mom’s night special, thank you!

Really nice brunch spot with dishes from Georgia (the country, not the state :) ). It has a charming back yard (with a separate entrance on the side). The khachipuri is really good and the coffee martini (called Sabrina's Espresso) is amazing!

Yelp
The Crumb might better be called The Loaf - neither plates nor portions could reasonably be described as small. The space is open, casual, and inviting. Naturally, we over ordered. The short rib over mashed celery root was tasty - rib tender and root buttery - definitely a crowd pleaser. The soba noodles were plentiful although a little more veggies and a little less noodle would have been welcome. The solo Khachapuri should be called a duo at a minimum - very plentiful and I am both fearful and impressed at the idea of a much larger shared version. The crab cakes were more of a tapas size and best described as extremely crab heavy hush puppies, phenomenal. If I could give a note, it's a little strange to have the same 2 sides for 4 dishes - feels like an invitation for innovation. The honey cake, unfortunately, was a little goopy, not the kind of crisp contrast I'd hoped for, and the micro green garnish was...strange for a dessert. The beverage offerings include solid wine and beer options. The mocktails are unfortunately more fancy juice than complex cocktailesque beverage. Which is too bad since they do seem to have some interesting syrups ready to go to fancy things up. The staff was very nice but the service was a little unusual at times. Our check was also dropped with our dessert which felt a little rushed. All in all, there's more to try before I'd be back. But if you are in the mood for a hearty meal at a friendly neighborhood spot, give The Crumb a go - just remember portions are more loaf than crumb.

Yelp
Our family of 3 was excited to try this new neighborhood spot out for lunch! The food is decent (some items are better than others), the service is warm and friendly, and the space is cozy and inviting. We shared the following: 1) Crab cakes - pretty good 2) Steak crostini - all right 3) Fish tacos - flavorful 3) Chicken schnitzel - the chicken was moist and we liked the light breading level; however, I found it a bit bland/potentially under salted 5) Churro puffs - okay The staff was warm, friendly, welcoming, and attentive, which was appreciated. We also loved the fact they brought crayons and a coloring sheet for our young daughter. We sat indoors, and enjoyed the cozy decor, including the throw pillows, holiday lights, and oil paintings on the walls. We are excited to have this new business on Cortland, and hopeful they'll work out the kinks in their menu soon so everything is equally delicious!

Yelp
We visited on the opening night and had such a great time. The ambience was soo cozy and inviting perfect for a date night. Our favorites were the - hamachi crudo, Peruvian wings, and the crab cakes. For dessert we got the churro puffs which was filled with chocolate and the perfect ending! The cocktails were great too. Their service was great and we loved talking to the staff. Can't wait to try more things as they expand their menu and waiting to come here for brunch as well. We heard that they will be having movie nights in the patio too eventually and really looking forward to that!

Yelp
We are so happy to have experienced The Crumb on its opening weekend here in Bernal Heights. The food was delicious and the service from our server Paul was outstanding. We tried a bunch of different things and they all were great. A few standouts that I will be dreaming about until our next visit were the butternut squash soup, the fish tacos, the beet and arugula salad, and the soba noodles. The fish tacos were battered and served with the most delicious cabbage and onions and white sauce (which we asked for on the side). Others in our party also tried the deviled eggs and sweet potato bites, which I didn't personally try, but which they said were also delicious. Something we particularly appreciated was Paul's patience with us in answering a million questions, as one person in our party had severe food allergies. Paul patiently went through all of the menu items and we found many things that she could eat, either with a few modifications or as is. We ordered "Milk In Cookies" for desert and though it was a little challenging to share, it was also delicious. For beverages, we had wine, beer, and a low-alcohol cocktail that was surprisingly awesome. All of this, and the prices were totally reasonable! We highly recommend checking out The Crumb in Bernal Heights, and we can't wait until our next visit.

Yelp
Within the first few moments of entering this restaurant I was blown away. I had a this is brunching in San Francisco moment. Not only was a lucky to experience the beautiful weather in their patio but also great music. On Sundays, they have live music and is paired with excellent food. This restaurants menu has food from all over the map. Make sure you try their strawberry Bellini, best Bellini I've ever had!

Yelp
**UPDATE** They are moving locations so they are temporarily closed - Apple Maps & Yelp still says the restaurant is open. Bummer since I really wanted to try this spot, especially the back patio. But happy to know they are not closing permanently!

Yelp
Yes! Finally a place serving small plates on Cortland. This is what our neighborhood was missing and I'll continue patronizing them. Service was clear, folks there were lovely, and most importantly the food was good and well portioned! The one piece of critique I have is that the front dining room could use some acoustic dampening - we could hear the folks in the window booth from across the room. Overall a welcome addition to Cortland!

Yelp
bad bad bad this place replaced Bernal Star which Was a wonderful breakfast , brunch, early dinner restaurant with great pricing . Crumb is crumby!

Yelp
I was visiting SF from Toronto and was disappointed that Bernal Star closed, but I was excited to try The Crumb. I hoped the new restaurant would be fantastic, but unfortunately, it fell short of my expectations. The staff seemed poorly trained and stressed. Although they appeared to be kind people, it was clear they lacked proper training. Ultimately, the owner is responsible for training The menu was simple yet confusing, with a collection of "a little bit of this" and "a little bit of that." It did not meet the quality I expect from San Francisco restaurants. The restaurant's decor felt very generic, and there was also a strange official notice on the door I hope these issues are just growing pains, but I cannot recommend this restaurant.

Helen A.

Yelp
We've walked by this spot countless times, always passing it up because the menu seemed simple and unremarkable. We finally decided to give it a try for brunch, and we were so pleasantly surprised! We had to ask the server a ton of questions to try to get a better sense of the food since the menu offers no helpful descriptions. Every dish we tried was thoughtfully prepared, full of flavor, and far more creative than we had expected. Honestly, the food here is wonderful but the menu doesn't reflect that. This is definitely a new favorite of ours, and we're already looking forward to coming back for dinner.

Yelp
Delicious food. We had the salmon, scallops and beet salad. Everything was cooked perfectly. Amazing service. So happy that this restaurant is in Bernal.

Yelp
Great new addition to the neighborhood. Went a few weeks back with the family, we had a lovely time, enjoyed the simple menu, the food hit the spot, the staff was very friendly, there was a relaxing live jazz duo, about all I could ask for Sunday brunch :)

Yelp
This place reminds me of being invited to a high schoolers' dinner party! Very nice people, alas, unremarkable unskilled cooking. Bizarre, non coherent menu, Awkward on multiple levels. And, surprisingly overpriced for what they serve. Really strange they thought this could count as a restaurant in San Francisco. They are getting 2 instead of 1 star because they are very nice people. Hopefully they will figure out a way to serve nice food too...

Yelp
I've been there for the croque madam 3 times. consistently good and pleasant staff. prices are reasonable and the place has a good menu. can't wait to try the other dishes. the only drawback is the choice of music they play which was techno beat. my own personal preference is for a more relaxing style

Yelp
The food was amazing and the servers were very enthusiastic. The cocktails were yummy and very creative. The crab cakes were delicious. We ordered too much but it was all delicious.

Yelp
My family and I went to dinner here on opening night and wow! What an amazing spot! The staff were absolutely amazing. So sweet to our 6 year old twins. Food was also fantastic. The standout dish for us was the Moroccan salmon. The amount of flavor they were able to put into the couscous was incredible. Salmon was also cooked perfectly. Ambiance is so warm and welcoming. Love the outdoor seating in back and I heard they will be showing movies on the back wall someday which is so cool. Fantastic little neighborhood spot! Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Excellent service and delectable items. Ordered the salmon and cream cheese filled blinis (think crepes) and lovely salad on the side. Also, enjoyed a mango mimosa and some desserts to share with our group. Worth checking out ;)!

Yelp
We went to the opening night and had an amazing experience! We enjoyed plates of steak and wild mushroom crostinis, fish carpaccio, and our 8-year-old loved the Peruvian chicken wings. The cocktail menu, featuring a selection of wines and sparkling cocktails, is both original and delicious. I absolutely love this place!

Yelp
Our experience was underwhelming. We ordered a salad to start. The waitress brought the salad to our table, but we had no silverware. So we sat there for a few minutes, looking at the salad hoping that she will return promptly with the silverware. When she finally returned, she took our salad away and put it on another table. After I complained about that, she brought the salad back to our table. At that point I thought we entered some sort of a comedy club. Upon request, we were finally given silverware. This was the cheapest silverware I've ever seen in a restaurant. After I complained about the silverware, we were given proper silverware, which was apparently available. I was served my entree 15 min before my wife's entree. The good news was that my beef borscht soup had so little beef in it that I could share it with my vegetarian wife. The borscht reminded me more of a vegetable beet soup. There was no bread. Only very small croutons. My wife had fish tacos. The portions are on the smaller side. The ambience was OK. It is not loud and comfortable. Pretty much the same setting as the previous restaurant. Given the competition in the area, I'm surprised that a new restaurant is not making a bigger effort to get things right.

Yelp
Missing The Bernal Star, dropped by and noticed the gate open and alleyway free of barriers to walk into the new restaurant The CRUMB my friend asked if they were open and although it was 4pm and didn't open til 5pm we were welcomed to be a guest Little did we know the server was actually the chef, chef Chris welcoming us with a delightful smile and gracious attitude. We were treated like royalty The food was fabulous, scallops lying on a fabulous bed of velvety pea puree and a lamb slider. We were also treated with their black cod tacos which were luscious and gluten free shell obvi homemade and tasty The dessert to die for a honey cake that melts in your mouth I am definitely returning especially to try their khachapuri, which sounded scrumptious serving two to three Thank you Chef Chris and the General Manager who went out of her way to care for us and I apologize I for your name Service was above & beyond 5 stars
google avatar

Raquel M.

Yelp
The food was good, but very simple. The service was fast didn't have much on the menu not my cuppa tea.

Paul M.

Yelp
Great new brunch spot in Bernal. The Khachapuri was incredible! Also way above average egg scramble with mushrooms and spinach, so flavorful. And delicious cocktails. Give it a try!

Kim H.

Yelp
Great food and service but opening hours unreliable. Even if you have a reservation they may be closed.

Yelp
I and family went to The Crumbs. We had such delicious evening experience! The food was amazing. We ordered eggs which were stuffed with truffles and arugula salad which was so fresh and tasty with beets, it's healthy choice that The Crumbs offered. We also ordered vermicelli with really juicy mushrooms added to that and crustinies. We had tasty drinks of lemonade with oranges inside. It looked pretty and tasted just right. The service was superb! We had several waiters coming to our group table always asking if we needed anything or accommodating us to a relaxing family dinner with patience and good manners. We really appreciated their hospitality and wonderful service. The ambiance of this place is awesome! It's with new modern pictures on their walls and cozy atmosphere, warm hospitable place that these hardworking people created, I and my family appreciated all of that! I will go there many times now as I loved this place and delishesnes of plates and prices are in every person budget! I definitely told all my friends and colleagues about The Crumbs and they already visited with the place and liked it very much!

Yelp
Had a very enjoyable experience on Saturday night. Our party of four arrived before 6 for a quick bite before we went to a house party in the neighborhood. Drinks were inventive and delicious, food was fabulous and service was friendly and fun. Some of the items took a bit longer to come out than I expected, but when I told our server of our other engagement they took care of us very quickly. Great neighborhood spot! I wish I lived closer.

Alexander G.

Yelp
Stopped by for some small plates and wine and was impressed by the place. The service was fast and efficient, waitstaff knowledgeable. Quirky art on the walls. Overall the experience was enjoyable and I will come back to explore other items on the menu.

Diana T.

Yelp
Amazing restaurant and owner! The food is divine and will epically blow your pallet! The ambiance is very romantic. A must go to in SF! Highly recommend!

Clarissa N.

Yelp
Finally got a chance to check out the new restaurant in the neighborhood. We went for brunch this past weekend and had the salmon blinis, mushroom & herb scramble, and the latkes. All came with a nice serving of green salad, which I loved because I'm always looking to have a healthy plate - bonus, the dressing was fresh and yummy. Everything was delicious and service was friendly. Will definitely be back for brunch and looking forward to trying out their dinner menu. So happy to have another solid restaurant option on Cortland.

Kate E.

Yelp
Finally, a great tapas spot in Bernal! The food was great. You can really taste the high-quality ingredients, and the presentation was nice. Honey cake was to die for! Service was warm and attentive, which made the experience even better. I honestly don't understand why some people are comparing this place to Bernal Star that closed and they are not related. No offense, but the quality here is miles ahead! So, I'm really happy to see a new upgraded place with much better quality and selection.

Terese L.

Yelp
our group of six had a lovely time on Friday evening. We shared several small plates, which were all quite good (the standouts for me were the mushroom empanadillas, mushroom crostini, and Hamachi crudo, and the honey cake for dessert). The service was excellent - friendly and knowledgeable waitstaff. It's a bit of a jumble of food types but that just means there should be something for everyone. Also, great art on the walls. We'll be back
