The Best Restaurants Near Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and Black Hills | Eater

"A contemporary restaurant that reimagines regional flavors with inventive dishes such as smoked trout BLTs, walleye chermoula with coconut rice, and a cowboy caviar of pinto and black beans with corn in a sweet, vinegary dressing — a modern take on local ingredients and cowboy-era traditions." - Matt Kirouac

Google
The food was great overall! The salad dressing stood out—very good and clearly homemade. The dessert with caramelized bacon wasn’t quite to my taste, but my son really enjoyed it. My husband absolutely loved the fish and chips, especially the tartar sauce. What truly made the experience special was the service. The staff were outstanding—friendly, attentive, and welcoming. They really make this place a wonderful one!

Cynthia Amoruso

Google
Husband came for the fish and chips and he was very happy with the meal. I had the beet salad and asked for no cheese to make it vegan, it was excellent. We also enjoyed the on tap brew, hubby had the Jeremiah Johnson Scotch Ale and I had Grain Belt Lager, also excellent. Service was outstanding, thank you Jason for your attentive and friendly manner.

Google
Very comfortable place to take a break from the heat and the tourist mobs and to enjoy some tasty pub grub and outstanding craft beer. The prices are reasonable, the service is friendly and fast, and there is ample seating outside on a shaded patio and inside at the dining room or at the bar. The craft beers are on tap from Black Tooth Brewing. The parking on the street in front of the restaurant is usually full, but it is easy to find a spot elsewhere within less than a block’s walk to the place.

Google
Nice place! Offers inside and outside seating. Food was extremely fresh and hot. We got the Fish & Chips (comes with an amazing tartar sauce) and the Chicken Tenders with Potato Smashers. Very hefty serving sizes and well worth the money. Menu was not as big as I had hoped for, but it definitely made the decisions easier. Service was very attentive.

Google
Everything about The Custer Wolf was amazing. We had the fried green beans as a starter and they were light and crisp with a very good dipping sauces. For the main courses, I had the salmon and my wife had the flatbread taco, which was the special of the day. Finally, we split a chocolate mousse and it was fantastic. We’re from Ohio and we really wish someday to return. It was a great stop!

Google
A tasty surprise in Custer—don’t skip the smashed potatoes 🐺 What a great lunch stop! I had the smoked trout BLT, and wow—if cold-smoked salmon and magic had a baby, this would be it. Seriously, try it. My fiancée had the burger, which hit all the right notes, but the real MVP? The smashed potatoes. Golden, crispy perfection. If you skip them, you’ve made a terrible life choice. Service was on the slower side, but they seemed slammed, and let’s be real—this place probably deals with a rotating cast of hangry tourists all day. Props to the staff for holding it together. Bottom line: amazing food, a little patience required, but totally worth the stop.

Google
Amazing place! Fantastic food, awesome service!! The pasta al limone with shrimp is fabulous! Best breading pudding ever!! You will feel like a friend the minute you walk in the door. A must go to spot!

Google
Friendly. Delicious smoked trout BLT. Went extremely well with the Josh Chardonnay (Napa). The Moose Drool brown ale was new to me, but tasted good and cold

Yelp
We were on a road trip to Sioux Falls SD, and we stayed in Custer, SD for 3 days. On our first day that we arrived friends recommended The Custer Wolf for dinner. We arrived around 5:45 and the restaurant was busy. We had a choice of sitting inside or sitting in the patio outside. We love patio dining so we chose to sit outside. My husband wanted to try a local draft beer, Jason our waiter suggested he try Lost Cabin Beer in a can. It is a local beer that tastes like a good draft beer. He ordered it and liked it! Almost Every time we went out he would order the Lost Cabin Beer. For dinner we ordered the Walleye, it came with a green garlic sauce on top of the walleye with jasmine rice and broccoli. This was one of my favorite meals, the fish was cooked perfectly. We enjoyed our meal, and the patio is not fancy but we enjoyed sitting outside. We highly recommend The Custer Wolf! When you visit this restaurant and you sit in the patio, ask for Jason is a wonderful waiter! He is friendly, has a great sense of humor and is attentive. It was a joy having him as our waiter.

Yelp
I tried the Wolf Burger and it was actually super delicious. The fries were just "okay". The staff was nice but we did notice a theme throughout our meal. The service was very, very slow. It took quite a while to get our food and just as long to get refills on our drinks. We actually had to flag them down and beg for refills. Also, we were there with kids and the place is basically a bar that happens to serve food. So honestly not the best environment.

Yelp
A bar with not your typical bar food. Located in the heart of downtown custard, this eatery offers indoor, outdoor and bar seating. Exceptionally laid-back, and clearly a favorite of many locals, we were very happy to be seated at the bar and get to know the bartender who made us feel very welcome. The decor is very simple and the focus is on the people and the food. Full bar with many NA options. We were so pleased to find a fish dish that was not breaded, the walleye was exceptional. Wonderful side salads and I was able to enjoy a mixed vegetables with shrimp that allowed me to stick to my diet. The bread pudding was very tempting, but we stuck to our guns! Good value, good food, good people. Check out the customer wolf next time you're in the area.

Yelp
This is going to be a split review. First the good...service gets a 5. These folks HUSTLE! They were so pleasant and even though they were busy kept smiling. Nice job. The food was also a 5. It was terrific. The walleye was flaky and rhe sauce, superb. The green bean appetizer was scrumptious with a sauce that had a nice kick. Now for the less tgan stellar part. The restaurant itself is cute, it has indoor and outdoor seating. We chose indoor but had to contend with such fly distractions that it took away from the experience. Otherwise it would gave been a 5 all around.

Yelp
Enjoyed dinner at The Custer Wolf. We sat outside because it was busy at the time and that's all they had available, which was fine. It is a covered area that kept us dry despite the rain. I was excited to see Moose Drool on the beer menu, but to my disappointment, it was not available. I had a similar style beer from Wyoming and it was good. I had fish for dinner and it was great, along with the coconut rice. A chill place to relax and have a great meal.

Yelp
A hodge podge of seating arrangements. A bar type area, a middle regular cafe feel and a patio with a variety of furniture seating. Jason was helpful and very friendly, the service here is top notch. My husband had an issue with a salad where he couldn't substitute a dressing they took his salad back no questions asked. I had a walleye po boy not too greasy and flavorful. Recommend it for sure .

Denise F.

Yelp
Service was good but food was just ok. If you are going to serve Korean food. Actually learn how to make it with the proper ingredients or call it something else!!
google avatar

Jennifer O.

Yelp
Had the trout BLT with smashed red potatoes and pink lemonade. It was FANTASTIC, I will be back!

Yelp
If I could add a sixth star I would. The service was exceptional. Attentive, kind, wonderful people attended to myself and my family. The food was remarkably better than other food that we ate in this town. We tried the state fish upon recommendation and I am so glad we did. This is the highest rated restaurant when we came through, and I can see why. Great food, and great service. A must do.
google avatar

Jesena M.

Yelp
This place has a great funky outdoor patio and the girls running the service were doing a great job. We were not as convinced of the food, the burgers were dry and burnt and no sauce at all (usually hip places come up with their own signature sauce). The salad with the berry dressing was probably the highlight of the dinner.

Meghan B.

Yelp
We were stopped in Custer for the night and many places were already closing at 7-7:30, so we hopped in to Custer Wolf around 7:30 and were out at 8:25, shortly after their 8pm closing time. We sat out on the covered patio, which was blocked well by the horizontal wood slates. It gave us enough privacy from the main road but still allowed us to look around. The food was great! On the burger, wish there had been a little more jalapeño cream cheese sauce but it still was a great burger. The smash potatoes were AMAZING and perfect in every way. The pasta a limone with chicken was delicious and creamy. I'd recommend either of those, and the other options on the menu sounded just as good!

Yelp
Quick service and tasty food. My dad and I got the walleye po'boys and he got the potato smashers, while I got the coconut rice. The rice did have a strong flavor of coconut, but could've been a little moister. Similarly, the walleye po'boy could've used a little more tartar sauce, but did come with several pieces of walleye and was a very good portion. Prices were reasonable too. 2024 #46

Yelp
Delicious lightly battered walleye poboy, delicious food for all and every table was greeted, offered friendly explanations and delivered quick attentive service the entire meal. Quaint downtown spot worthy of visit two when visiting this charming town. GOOD FOOD!!

Hank M.

Yelp
While passing through Custer, South Dakota after a visit to Mount Rushmore, we made a stop at The Custer Wolf for a quick bite--and it ended up being a memorable part of the day. The weather was perfect, so we opted for a seat outside, which gave us a pleasant view of the downtown area and added a relaxed, small-town charm to the experience. We started off with the cowboy caviar and fried green beans--both appetizers were flavorful and fresh, a great way to ease into the meal. For my main course, I went with the walleye po' boy, served with smashed potatoes. The fish was perfectly cooked, the sandwich well-balanced, and the potatoes were a hearty, comforting side. To drink, I enjoyed two Ninja Juice IPAs from nearby Sawyer Brewing Company, which paired nicely with the meal and added a refreshing local touch to the overall experience. All in all, the food was delicious, the beer cold, and the atmosphere--especially from the outdoor seating--made for a great stop. Whether you're passing through or spending more time in the Black Hills, The Custer Wolf is a solid pick for casual, quality eats.

Yelp
Plenty of seating. The server was very knowledgeable on the menu items but I didn't catch his name. The green beans are great! The chicken strips were wonderful also. They were juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside. The sauces for dipping were all good. Only wish is they fried in tallow instead of canola oil.

Yelp
Best place to eat in Custer, SD!! Vibe: Visiting Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse & Custer State Park Order: Beet salad with Berry Dressing, beef bulgogi with rice & broccoli, bread pudding (2) Price: $50 + tip Leftovers: for days Taste: Delicious !!! Parking: Difficult to find spots around Service: Excellent!! A definite must try if anywhere in the area! Menu changes at owners whim so I like the variety!
google avatar

Yelp
Such a cute place and the burger was amazing. I wasn't a huge fan of the smashed red potatoes (they were dry) but overall I loved the experience. Our server was exceptionally kind, loved his vibe. The live music made the experience top notch.
google avatar

Gwo-Long H.

Yelp
The staff was friendly. profesional, and helpful. The service was great and the food was wonderful. We had beet salad, fish and chip, bcj burger, and bread pudding. All were great. I had potato smashers with my fish and hubby had broccoli with his bcj. The bread pudding portion was good enough for two to share and it was delicious.
google avatar

Chris Z.

Yelp
As odd as they sound the friend green beans are amazing! I recommend them! The chicken tenders are like what grandma used to make. Very relaxing atmosphere.
google avatar

Ellie T.

Yelp
Service and ambience were very good. Pastas and fish were delicious. Prices seem a bit high compared to other restaurants. Somehow there were a lot of flies but we would come back again!
google avatar

Melody K.

Yelp
Great food and wonderful customer service!! I had the hamburger and fries and asked for extra pickles and they were very accommodating. My husband had the bulgogi with rice and broccoli and really enjoyed it. We even bought shirts so we could remember this fun place!!

Teresa W.

Yelp
Waitress was nice and helpful, but young lady that delivered our appetizer of smashed potatoes practically threw them on our table as she passed by. Overpriced for what you get. Nothing special about the food.

Chris D.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic! I have multiple food allergies and our server, Hannah, the kitchen staff, and the manager went above and beyond to not only make me a meal I could eat, but also an extra delicious one! My husbands BCJ (bacon cheese and jalapeño) burger with a side salad was equally perfect. Everyone was so nice! We had a wonderful dining experience!!

Larry H.

Yelp
Do not eat here, some of the worst service we have experienced in South Dakota. Empty glasses for 15 minutes, no food for 45 minutes. Owner indifferent about the situation. Questioned our complaint, as we pointed to our empty glasses and lack of food on the table.
google avatar

Teresa R.

Yelp
The best dining experience we had in the area. There were seven of us and we were greeted warmly and our waiter, I believe he said his name was Jason or something similar was fantastic and the food was delicious! My husband and I shared the chicken tenders with red potatoes and they were the best tenders I've ever had. All others seemed to like what they got too. If you're there, don't hesitate to try the Custer Wolf.
google avatar

Kaycee M.

Yelp
The service was exceptional! Our server Jen was very attentive and nice! We had the cowboy caviar to start. It was a nice balance of sweet and tangy and the portion was large. I had the Walleye Po Boy. It was delicious and the huge! My husband had the Bcj burger and said it was good!

Tim J.

Yelp
A tad late on review (June 2024). Food was good, service was good. The interior has a great ambiance. I felt it was just an average dining experience. Not fantastic, but not awful either. I think it is one of those places you try and make your own assessment.

Yelp
A really pretty restaurant in downtown Custer. They have an adorable patio but it was too cold the day we visited. I had the fish and chips and they were good but there was an unusual spice in the batter that I didn't like. My husband had the smoked trout BLT and really liked it. Everything seemed very fresh. Our server was great
google avatar

Joanne H.

Yelp
This was a quick stop after seeing the Crazy Horse monument. Very quick and friendly service. Dog friendly too. We sat on a covered patio, which was covered from the sun and wind. Split a steak with veggies, it was AWESOME. The waiter said it was sourced from a rancher in Nebraska so I liked that. Also got talked into a homemade cheesecake- so yummy- with an almond based crust. Sorry no photos, we ate it all and quickly. I'd highly recommend. Reasonably priced too.

Yelp
Saw this place from the road and thought we'd give it a try. The wait staff was friendly from the hostess to the bussers. The food tasted fresh, homemade, and filling. The ambiance was warm and cozy and very inviting. We got our check in an old book and even got to sign it. Super fun and would love to come back some day! YUM

Yelp
Stopped by based on someone's recommendation and so glad I took the suggestion! We were greeted by a lovely lady outdoors who sat us at a booth and then taken care of by another friendly young lady. I had the Italian turkey sandwich which was out of this world. For my side I had a salad that came with 2 slices of watermelon radish which I never heard of but I am a HUGE fan of radishes and loved the look and taste of it. My husband had the smoked trout BLT and raved about it. Seemed to be pretty popular for a Wednesday afternoon and I can see why. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
Really, really liked this place! Such a pleasant surprise. Our server, Terra, was an absolute delight and the food was on point. We had a Reuben and a Walleye sandwich, both of which were outstanding. Great flavors! And speaking of which, do not leave here without having the bread pudding. Terra enthusiastically recommended it, we trusted her, and she was not wrong. Holy cow. Amazing. It's a friendly vibe - like an old saloon that put on some lipstick for a night out - with unexpectedly tasty food on offer. Try it!

Whit S.

Yelp
The food was yummy. Service was great- the waiter was really nice and helped make selections. The place was cozy and unique.
google avatar

Debi W.

Yelp
The place just opened and it was already getting crowded. So glad we got a table within 10 min. The place feels like an old western saloon with lots of beer and wine selections. We ordered the BBQ chicken flatbread made with Sweet Potato crust GF. So delicious and crispy. The BBQ sauce was just enough sweet to compliment the crust. The bacon and cheese were the right amount to balance the flavors. My husband ordered the smoked Trout BLT with smashed crispy potatoes. He said it was very good. The fried cod came with two pieces and cooked crispy the way it should be. Such a nice lunch for our first visit to Custer.

John D.

Yelp
Fantastic place. Now here is a bit of a caveat, I am not white and very obviously Native American. And these people in South Dakota have to be some of the most racist people I have ever encountered, even compared to Texas. Which is ironic because sure these racist hillbillies are inbred back 5 generations at least and so I don't understand why they are so obsessed with hating people. They should gaze inwards. Anyways, The Custer Wolf was a really nice change of pace and definitely hit the spot. Recommended if you ever find yourself in the armpit of America
google avatar

Kathleen H.

Yelp
The fish and chips were very good, as was the chili. My server Aaron did a great job. He also gave me a great suggestion to watch sunset at the stockade lake beach.

Yelp
An 11/10 experience! Our hilarious waiter made our already great time here even better. All of the staff, in fact, were all extremely kind, having friendly banter with groups of customers as they served us. The crowd here also was welcoming and queer-friendly. The ambiance was cozy with a true local feel. The bathrooms are so nice here that it's almost comical - there are bidets on the toilet and a great changing table in the women's. The food was delicious. I got the falafel burger with a gluten free bun. The toppings were fresh and the tzatziki sauce it came with fit perfect. Dietary restrictions here are clearly labeled, even for the side dishes. They have a great gluten free selection, even offering a gluten free IPA. Thanks for making our post hike meal memorable!

Amy H.

Yelp
Our server was very friendly, and the food was great overall. Husband thought the fries were only adequate. Nice enough atmosphere though traffic on Main Street got noisy at times.

John C.

Yelp
We went to this restaurant twice during our stay. The sautéed mushrooms were the killer good. On her first lunch we also had the smoked trout BLT. We thought this was quite good (not as amazing as the mushrooms though). On her second time through we had the salmon again this was quite good. Highly recommend coming to this restaurant, particularly if you're looking for healthier choices. Overall, we were extremely pleased.

Yelp
We had a delicious lunch here on our way to Custer State Park. It was considered the off season, but this place was very busy! And we soon found out why, great service and great food! The atmosphere was warm and inviting with friendly staff and quick service. We started with a bowl of chili, it was very good, a nice warm flavor, not too spicy. Next, fish & chips and a BCJ burger. Everything was delicious, and the fries had just the right crispness. We were very happy with our decision to stop here.

Yelp
It's a good thing that they are a good restaurant, because in spite of other businesses saying they were open on Yelp and website until 10/15, they were closed on 10/11. Your choices on this night were Custer Wolf, Pizza Hut until 8, and maybe Dairy Queen. Even the YesWay was remodeling and had no food. But Custer Wolf did not disappoint. Friendly service, varied enough menu to appeal to everyone, good beer selection. The special was a 16 oz angus strip with salad and side for $25. Salads have homemade dressings, and the smashed potatoes were soooo good. Steak was well prepared and seasoned. The bison sandwich is apparently a roasted cut shaved - it had amazing flavor and still moist which is not an easy task with buffalo. We left happy and too full for dessert.

Yelp
I went here ina Monday afternoon around 2:30 so I was seated right away. The food was delicious but I have to say that the bread pudding dessert was superb!! Do not go here and not get dessert!!

Yelp
Wow! I'm honestly not sure how to review this place. We went here about 5 days ago and it was fantastic. Great service at the bar, ordered beet salad with chicken and the BLT with a couple of local beers, fantastic. So we decided to return today in anticipation of another great experience. Unfortunately, it wasn't in the cards. We sat in a booth and the server took our drink order. She returned with our drinks and promptly spilled a 20oz glass of ice water in my lap. It happens so we sort of laughed it off. Then it took a while for someone to come back and wipe off the table and the booth as I sat there in a pool of water. The server then told the person who wiped the water to just leave it on the floor. So I sat there for the entire lunch with ice and water under my feet. Once our food came the beet salad was nothing close to what we had on our previous visit and the burger was uneatable. We asked if it was grass fed or if it was bison, she said that it wasn't. It smelled really off and tasted really gamey. We couldn't eat it. The server gave us a discount. I don't know if we'll go back or not. I hope that today was just a bad day for them and not a normal occurrence.
google avatar

J J.

Yelp
Our server was incredible.. could not have been nicer. The host was a little interesting. A group of 8 was in front of us. She had to ask the server if he wanted more people? That was the first time I heard that. We got seated immediately. it was the short female. I had the walleye. It's the state fish, It was cooked properly. It was great. The coconut rice was great. I liked the suttle
google avatar

Tammy W.

Yelp
Yelp did not lie with this spot! Came here after going to Wind Cave and before exploring Custer State Park. I got right in, but I came at a non peak time and not in the middle of summer. I got the fish and chips - I got fries as my side (you don't have to get fries, there are other sides to choose from) and a side salad as well. The food came out quickly and was really good. Big portions of the fish and fries were crispy and hot. The cilantro lime dressing for the side salad was so delish! Service was really friendly and fast. I'd definitely come back!
google avatar

Rick H.

Yelp
Friendly and helpful host, friendly server. Food was good and prices were decent. Two table that ordered after we did got our food before we did. The server recognized that and took a drink off of the bill, which was nice. Only complaint was the amount of flies, but in their defense that seems to be ever single establishment in Custer, so I don't hold that against them. If I ever make it out this way again, I would consider stopping by again.

Mimi M.

Yelp
Great food, prompt service, warm and lively atmosphere. Mushroom appetizer is worth getting! Burger and sides are ample and well done Will be back!!
google avatar

Susan J.

Yelp
Great local place! Fast friendly service! And the food! He had the NY Strip special with a fresh salad (the creamy garlic Parmesan dressing was delicious), and the smashers (baked red potatoes, popped on the grill for a quick roast, then smashed flat and sprinkled with cheese). All wonderful! I had the Walleye PoBoy with the smashers and was happy with the big chunks of fish and 'taters! We finished with the wonderful bread pudding served with warm caramel sauce and fresh whipped cream.....to die for!!! We would certainly eat here again!
google avatar

Kaylie W.

Yelp
Tasty food, reasonable prices, great service, and beer selection had a lot of local breweries on tap
