SO. MUCH. FUN.
I won two VIP tickets through a holiday party raffle at work, so if you also have a VIP ticket and are wondering what it includes, this is it:
- Separate VIP line to get in than the ticket line
- Seated first inside the studio (front row)
As far as general admission, tickets are free and access is given on a first-come, first-served basis. I'm not sure how early you have to wait to get in, but I believe it varies based on a number of factors.
The VIP tickets said to arrive by 5pm, but our contact at Viacom said 4:30, which ended up being good, because even though they let VIP in first, they give you a number when you check in and you are seated in the order in which you arrived.
Once the person at the door checks your ID, you are given the option to go to the bathroom through a side staircase before you go through security and check your bag. There is a one-stall bathroom inside the waiting area after security as well. The bag check is for large backpacks, which they don't allow and should be noted on your ticket. I came straight from work, so I had a backpack with everything - laptop, wallet, and other valuables, so I was concerned about my belongings, but a security officer guards them the whole time.
They start bringing folks into the studio around 6pm, so the wait wasn't too bad. Again, VIP goes in first, then the first 50 people waiting, then the next and so on. The waiting area isn't big enough to hold much more than 50 people at a time.
After you are seated, you are allowed to use your phones and take photos and videos inside the studio until the comedian comes on to fire up the crowd. The free wifi credentials are posted on a large screen inside. The seating is great and there are no bad seats. They also play fun music while you wait. The comedian was great, too. The one we had was more of an insult comic native New Yorker, which is always hilarious to me, and he picked people out of the audience to rag on. It was fun. At that point, they asked everyone to turn off their phones completely and not just put them on silent mode, because there could be an amber/emergency alert and as we all know, those bypass any silent mode on your phone. They had one go off during an interview on a previous taping and they had to do the whole thing over, so you don't want to be that guy/girl.
Trevor snuck into the studio to say hi to the audience before starting the show. It was funny, because he said there was a time during the holiday break that he thought there may be nothing to talk about when he gets back... and then Iran happened. (We were the first show of the new year.)
The show itself runs pretty smoothly. They don't take time to do multiple takes unless something goes wrong. And you get to see the full interview, so it's great. Trevor will also talk to the audience in between takes as well. I believe we were out by about 7:45.
All in all, definitely a bucket list item that I am excited to have checked off to kick off the new year!
