Minnesota Distilleries Making the Best in Local Liquor | Eater Twin Cities

"Breaking from the usual vodka/gin backbone, Dampfwerk makes all kinds of intriguing brandies. The head distiller at this family brewery is from Germany, and they lean into regional drinks that use fruits, like pear and apple. There are also mixes ready to be poured straight into the glass like the Hegolander, Rabbit in the Rye, and Pfeffersack. Dampfwerk is also working on a new cocktail room in St. Louis Park. Keep an eye on that opening before the holiday season gets into swing." - Joy Summers

Dampfwerk Distilling is adding a new cocktail room in St. Louis Park - Eater Twin Cities

"St. Louis Park-based The Dampfwerk Distillery will open a new cocktail room just in time for brandy sipping season later this fall. The distillery isn’t new, but up until now, fans have had to seek out the distinctive square bottles with the etched artwork at liquor stores. Before the end of 2019, a new space will be constructed that will embody the convivial drinking culture of German in the Minneapolis suburb. Dampfwerk is the family-run distillery at 6311 Cambridge Street that’s built a reputation on fruit brandies, bucking the usual distillery trend of vodka/gin/whiskey/repeat. Co-founder Ralf Loeffelholz is German and is capable of espousing stories of region-specific brandies and their family legacies like sharing bedtime fairytales. His passion for coaxing flavors and sharing the subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) seasonal flavors and spirits is evident in any conversation with him. What our area has lacked, until now, is a proper brandy-sipping culture. The new cocktail room will pour Dampfwerk’s products from the autumnal pear and apple brandies, to the bitter-laced rye, to bracing gin, and the Pfeffersack, which sips like Fernet. In addition to sipping the spirits on site, there will be bartenders with an array of proper cocktails. On the menu will be classic cocktails along with a serious focus on drinks made with the brandies. The cocktail room will be open Wednesdays through Sundays. On Sunday it will host a kaffeeklatch with German coffee, cakes, and brandy. Dampfwerk has been working with Honey & Rye Bakehouse on some German cakes, tortes, and pies. Look for a late fall opening." - Joy Summers

What an incredible distillery!! I absolutely LOVED the Negroni flight. The Matcha Negroni was hands down my favorite, but the persimmon and black truffle were also pretty good. They do a great job on their cocktails. The atmosphere is romantic. Our server Felix was friendly, knowledgeable, and a great conversationalist! The Charcuterie board paired perfectly with the cocktails. And the olives had fun flavoring. Highly recommend this distillery!

The cocktails were fantastic. There's one on the menu that's basically a sidecar, and it was wonderfully balanced. That is one of my long time favorite drinks and my typical litmus for a bar. The charcuterie plate was tasty and had a nice variety of bites. The servers were really friendly and welcoming, too. Overall great experience, would recommend this cocktail lounge.

Finally got around to making my inaugural stop in! I entered to a sign at the host stand reading: Please Wait To Be Seated. I could see the bar from where I waited and a few minutes I heard someone say "someone is at the door"... I continued to wait.... a few minutes later I heard it again.....and waited....but shortly after I was greeted. Didn't let it dampen my experience....it's business. I took a seat at the bar and was given a short glass of lemon cucumber water (I apologize if this is incorrect) it was delicious. There are these skinny pencil looking things on a stand, its a wonderful little lamp to assist looking over the menu! As I perused the menu another guest told bartender Wyatt to "give her that thing....the heathers" Wyatt gave me a small pour of a delicious but STRONG liqueur... They said it was 48 proof, that was all I needed to know that I wouldn't be finishing my pour. Ha. As I perused the menu and told Wyatt I tend to lean right in to an Old Fashioned, they gave me their recommendations and we discussed proofs. I opted Wyatt's original suggestion of the 45 proof The Rope....as they discussed it was made w white asparagus. We laughed as I said: I never knew white asparagus was a thing until last week I ordered asparagus at a distillery and my server didn't even give me a heads up before bringing out... white asparagus. ha. But it complimented this sipping cocktail wonderfully! It really eased the 45 proof alcohol. Just after Wyatt gave me my drink Kyleeia came behind the bar so I asked her her cocktail go-to's. She had me intrigued w the Mrs White. That one will be on-deck my next visit due to her flavor description and the fact that another guest was drinking one. I like the cocktail room..... just dark enough, comfortable padded bar stools and comfortable standard height tables. Easy parking out front and overflow parking on the street. Thanks Dampfwerk for a friendly informative and delicious inaugural visit, chees!

Five stars isn’t enough for The Dampfwerk Distillery Cocktail Lounge! Every time we visit, we're blown away by the experience. The staff here are absolutely top-notch—friendly, welcoming, and incredibly knowledgeable. Whether we walk in knowing exactly what we want or feeling adventurous, they always come through with amazing recommendations. What really sets them apart is how willing they are to work with us to find the perfect drink. They take the time to ask thoughtful questions, and their enthusiasm for craft cocktails is contagious. The food is consistently excellent—creative, flavorful, and a perfect complement to the drinks. You can tell they put just as much care into the food menu as the cocktail program. And the drinks? Flawless. Every single time. Whether it’s something off the seasonal menu or a custom creation, the quality and balance are always impressive. Most importantly, I always feel truly welcomed at Dampfwerk. It’s the kind of place where you’re not just another customer—you’re a guest they’re genuinely happy to see. This is easily one of our favorite spots in town, and I recommend it to anyone looking for an exceptional cocktail experience in a cozy, elevated setting. Can’t wait to go back!

We arrived on a Friday night with a group of 7 to have a cocktail prior to dinner reservations. The cocktails were all so unique, but delicious. I had the Gen X “Take a chill pill” which I really enjoyed! Fun atmosphere too.

We stopped for happy hour and sat outside on their patio. The staff was friendly, drink were memorable and the nibbles were yummy. We did need the waiter to explain some of the cocktails which he happily did (a couple times since we had people arriving in waves). There was a 15% discount on drink during happy hour. We had the charcuterie board and one brave soul tried the sardines and said they were delicious. The inside is sleek and dark modern decor. Free parking. This is located in a warehouse area with another distillery, a wine place, a brewery all very close.

This lounge is an amazing space to bring friends and loved ones for a nice evening cocktail. The bartenders truly have a PASSION for the chemistry that goes into making drinks. If you ask any one of them about how a drink was designed/created, every single one of them lights up talking about it. The family who also runs the establishment is nothing short of amazing and kind. They are always a friendly face when you come in along with their amazing crew. The events that this place puts on are also so unique and fun. Every event we have gone to has left us leaving with many new memories and a happy attitude. My fiancé and I have done their sauna pop up and their family style 5 course dinner with an amazing chef that they flew in for the event. It was so cool!

A gem of a distillery, very nice to see a spot like this producing fantastic niche spirits (specializing in apple/pear brandy and German style herbal liqueurs). Almost even more impressive, they have one of the best cocktail programs I've had the pleasure of enjoying at a distillery. The bartenders were wonderful and we were lucky to get some time to chat, very much looking forward to our next opportunity to get back here.
